Change in your user rights
editYour Wikipedia account was previously granted a user right called "course instructor" by the Wiki Education Foundation. That right enabled you to create a course page through the EducationProgram MediaWiki extension. Starting in fall 2015, the Wiki Education Foundation has discontinued its use of this extension. Going forward, users should create course pages through the Wiki Education Foundation website. That application is more user-friendly, and any content is automatically mirrored to Wikipedia. To prevent confusion, we'll be removing your "course instructor" user right, as it is not needed with the new system. This is simply a notification of the technical change to your account. No action is needed from you at this time.
If you plan on teaching with Wikipedia for the fall 2015 term, please email me (helaine wikiedu.org) for instructions how to create your next course page using our new system. --Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk), sent by MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:34, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

Yay for using Wikipedia in class
edit- @Benjamin Mako Hill: Hello, this is Julia from your class. I am glad we are using Wikipedia, so I can get some training myself and an insider perspective showing me what it means to be part of the wiki community. Looking forward to it! :)

editHi professor Hill! my name is Po-Yen Chueh (Allen) from Taiwan. I am a transfer student from Seattle Central College so this is my first quarter at UW. I applied into communication department last week and hopefully become a good PR in the future. As for my hobbies, I love to go to gym and play badminton. Frankly, I still don't know any of the classmate well enough to introduce them because I was very intimidating by the class material that was given to us. However, I am sure I will be able to introduce some of the classmates in a few weeks.
I chose "Legacy House" as my Wikipedia project topic. It is a non profit senior services under SCIDpda company located at international district in Seattle.__Allenl5566 (talk) 05:17, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings Allen! I've looked around and I think you'll be able to pull this off. If you have trouble finding enough sources to establish notability, you might be able to write about SCIDpda instead. Neither have articles. My quick search suggests that there are is some good coverage in local newspapers. —mako๛ 06:17, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi professor, I do not know why I still have not receive any feedback from you for my wikipedia article. I just want to make sure that I did submit the article at the right place that you will be able to see the first draft. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Allenl5566 (talk • contribs) 04:07, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Allenl5566: It's just taken me a little longer to get this back than I was hoping. Thanks for hanging on! It's totally my fault! —mako๛ 19:11, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
Introducing Myself & Topic
editMy name is Jessica Johnson, and I am a senior at UW, majoring in communications with a minor in Spanish.
I enjoy hanging out with friends, eating, and exploring Seattle.
I look forward to learning more about what Wikipedia has to offer.
As for the topic of my article, I have 2 ideas:
1. TRX, the suspension training system
2. The Nautilus Group, a service of New York Life Insurance
Let me know your thoughts,
Thank you,
Johnjes6 (talk) 20:20, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings JJ! If you go with TRX or Nautilus, you want to make sure that you can satisfy WP:ORG. There's already an article on suspension training so you'd want to make sure that TRX is about the company or their specific product and that it wouldn't just be something you'd find in the article on the subject. —mako๛ 06:20, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

editHi professor Hill, My name is Amy YI and I am a senior at UW. I transferred from Whatcom Community College in Bellingham and my major is Communications and minor is Korean. I hope to get into the interpreting field after grad school. My hobbies are watching movies, driving at night, and hiking. I am looking forward to learning about Wikipedia!!
Topic: unsure yet, but the reason behind why Kpop is spreading so much around the world Thank you, Amy Yi Ayi1016 (talk) 23:33, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Great to meet you Amy! Johnjes6 (talk) 01:38, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- Johnjes6 If you want to leave a message for Ayi1016, you should probably leave the message on User talk:Ayi1016 (her talk page) so that she's likely to see it! —mako๛ 06:23, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings Amy! Keep thinking about the topic and leave a message here on my talk page when you think you've got something. Your suggestion sounds like more an essay or even original research which, unfortunately, is not really allowed on Wikipedia. You should think of something that would be appropriate for an encyclopedia article. —mako๛ 06:25, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
Hello Professor Hill! I am changing my topic. I discovered that Dramabeans(recap site of Korean dramas/shows) is a stub and I would like to expand on it or I would to create a page on Korean beauty standards. There isn't anything on Wikipedia and there were plenty of sources regarding the topic. Let me know what you think! AmyAyi1016 (talk) 09:31, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Ayi1016: Really? Dramabeans seems like it's a pretty long, well referenced, and relatively high quality article and it doesn't seem to be marked as a stub at all. A page on Korean beauty standards might be tricky but I'm OK with you trying. The closest thing is a page on physical attractiveness but I think creating a well referenced article has a chance of sticking. The tricky part is that it's not a typical concrete "thing" in the world and it might be hard to write an article that achieves a neutral point of view and that is an objective description. Beauty standards themselves (in Korea or elsewhere) are subjective things and can vary from person-to-person. If you want to try, I'm OK with it, but I'll warn you that I think it might be very tricky. —mako๛ 04:09, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

editHi professor Hill, My name is Min Ji Woo and I’m a senior at University of Washington. I transferred from Bellevue College last year. I’m majoring in Communication and minoring in Diversity. I’m interested in marketing and advertising field and I would like to pursue my career to be an event planner after I graduate University. I love watching movies, listening to music and snowboarding. It’s my first time learning how to use Wikipedia and I feel excited to be a participant of this.
Thanks, Min Ji W. Minjiwoo (talk) 23:27, 7 October 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Minjiwoo (talk • contribs) 23:21, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings Minjiwoo! Let me know when you've got an idea for a topic for your article. —mako๛ 06:30, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
Two ideas that I'm interested in 1. Comfort women 2. Coconut water which is famous these days which is from Thailand (Monkey trained as harvesters). Minjiwoo (talk) 03:36, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Minjiwoo: Both of those topics are extremely developed already. Can you think about a topic that is either does not exist at all on Wikipedia or that only exists as a very short underdeveloped stub? If you're having trouble coming up with ideas, you can look through the lists of requested articles and stubs that I linked to from the syllabus. —mako๛ 21:19, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Hello, ! I searched from list of stubs and I would like to write about list of kimchi varieties It shows incomplete, so that I would like to get final approval from you. Thanks! Minjiwoo (talk) 03:30, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Minjiwoo: I think it would better if you picked an article and not an list. Maybe there is a type of kimchi that is not written about yet or that is still a very underdeveloped stub? Maybe there is something else? —mako๛ 03:53, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
SInce there are a lot of varieties of kimchi style, that's why I think there is list of kimchi varieties that exist on Wikipedia, but it shows incomplete. Is it okay if I choose just one type of kimchi? Minjiwoo (talk) 04:32, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Minjiwoo:The list is incomplete but my concern is that writing the list would be too easy and wouldn't require that you know as much about writing Wikipedia articles because lists don't really require that you understand (or demonstrate an understanding in) things like NPOV, notability, sourcing, etc. I think it's better if you write an article and not a list. It would be fine if you wrote about a single type of Kimchi as long as that type does not have an article in Wikipedia yet. —mako๛ 05:58, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your suggestion ! I finally decide to do about pa kimchi (green onion kimchi) which does not have an article about it yet. Thank you your help!Minjiwoo (talk) 01:07, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Minjiwoo: Pa kimchi sounds like a good topic. It might end up getting merged back into the main Kimchi article so it will be helpful for you to find detailed references online — as well as lots of factual and historical detail — to help support the need for a separate article. Good luck! (PS, remember to sign your messages with ~~~~. 20:06, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Introducing myself & Article topic
editHi,
This is Seo Bin Yoon and I am from Korea. My intended major is communication and I am applying this quarter. I like reading books and watching movies. I am excited to know how to use Wikipedia. I also want to know about online communities and how it affects people.
My article topic is KO-AM TV which is Korean-American TV.
Thank you,Seobinyoon (talk) 23:50, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings Seobinyoon! As I mentioned in class, I think that the stub is small enough that you can do a fantastic job expanding this into an article. Probably the relevant notability policy is WP:BROADCAST. That said, since the article already exists in stub form, you will probably have to worry less about the article being deleted but you should still pay close attention to the policy to make sure that you've established notability. —mako๛ 06:28, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
Intro/Topic Ideas
editMy name is Amy Absalonson and I am a Senior Communications major also pursuing a certificate in sales through the Foster Business School. I enjoy hiking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. I look forward to this class and to advance my Wikipedia skills for the future. The topic I am considering for my Wikipedia article is to expand on the stub for the nonprofit organization Donate Life America. Please let me know your thoughts!
Thank you, Amy Absalonson Amyabsa (talk) 03:08, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings Amyabsa! The stub on Donate Life America seems like it could really use some help being expanded and improved. You'll want to pay close attention to WP:ORG (the notability policy for organizations). You want to check around before you get too attached and make sure that there are multiple sources. The current draft seems to reply entirely on just the one CNN article. If you can find some other material talking about, I think this would be a great article to work on expanding! —mako๛ 06:34, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
Intro/ Article Topic
editHi Professor Mako,
My name is Megan Wotherspoon, I am a Senior majoring in Communications and hope to receive the Sales Certificate through the Foster School of Business. I will be graduating from UW this spring and am excited to see where the future takes me! Outside of UW, I enjoy running, walking around Greenlake, spending time will friends and traveling to as many countries as possible.
The article I'm hoping to create is the Joshua P. Williams Foundation, it is a nonprofit organization that was founded in Sammamish, WA.
Thank you and I'm looking forward to this quarter!
Megan Mspoon1994 (talk) 03:08, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings Megan! Joshua P. Williams Foundation sounds like a wonderful organization. The only thing I'd be a little worried about is satisfying the Wikipedia notability policies for organizations. Before you move forward this, take a close read of the policy and then go and look and make sure that you can find enough news sources or whatever else you need to in order to make the case. It looks like JPW Foundation is a small organization with no staff. That makes me worried that — despite the wonderful work its doing — it might fall on the wrong side of the policy. Why don't you take a look at the policy and do a little research and see what you think. —mako๛ 06:40, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
After looking into it a little more, I was wondering if I would be able to write about Athletes for Kids. Athletes for Kids is an organization that pairs an high school athlete with a child struggling with a disability to be their mentor.
Megan Mspoon1994 (talk) 02:52, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Mspoon1994: All the same policies apply. If you think you can find enough sources to establish notability under WP:ORG, I'd say go for it. I did a quick search and it does look like there's more coverage. The AfK press page looks like it will be particularly helpful. Good luck! —mako๛ 03:51, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

editHi Professor Mako! My name is Cattleya Phou and I intend to major in Communications. I am a transfer from a California Community College who misses the sun, but has enjoyed the gloomy weather so far. As to my article, I am interested in writing about Cool-A-Coo, which is an ice cream sandwich I've had before many years ago at Dodger stadium.
Cat Phou (talk) 21:01, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings Cat Phou! A quick web search seems to suggest some solid news coverage about the product. One possible outcome is that it could be merged into another article (maybe Dodgers Stadium? But I think there's probably enough to establish notability on its own. Basically, this sounds good and I'm looking forward to reading the article! —mako๛ 19:14, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

editHello Professor Mako,
My name is Lauren Belfor, I am a Senior studying Communications and pursing the Foster Sales Certificate Program. I will be graduating this spring and hope to launch a career in fashion Marketing, that will hopefully take me to New York City. In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors and exploring Seattle and beyond with friends. I love traveling and am always looking for a chance to go abroad!
For my article I would like to write on the recent rebranding of luxury fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent to Saint Laurent Paris.
Thank you, Lbelfor (talk) 21:49, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- Great to meet you Lauren! I spent a quarter abroad in France last year. I'm excited to hear more about your proposed topic. My host mother worked for Christian Dior for over a decade and was quite knowledgeable about the history of French fashion and designers. There's definitely a lot of subject matter for you there! Bon courage! --Cherysei (talk) 04:22, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Cherysei: If you want to send a message to Lbelfor, she'll be more likely to see if if you leave it on her talk page. —mako๛ 19:17, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Lbelfor: I think that the rebranding itself is probably not something that would typically get it's own article but really just a be paragraph or a few sentences in the Yves Saint Laurent (brand) article which already states that the organization is known as Saint Laurent Paris. So while I think that expanding or adding a small section to that article might work, I think it would be better if you pick either an existing stub (Yves Saint Laurent (brand) is much more developed than a stub) or an article that does not exist. Any ideas about that? If you're really stumped, we could think about how to do something within the Saint Laurent Paris article. —mako๛ 19:21, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Benjamin Mako Hill: No problem, that makes sense. Is it ok if I write on a company, Krochet Kids Intl.? They have been mentioned in two wikipedia articles, but don't have their own page. Lbelfor (talk) 16:14, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Lbelfor: Writing about a company is totally fine. Check out WP:ORG for a sense of the how the criteria for notability. If looking around you think you'll be able to satisfy those criteria effectively, I say go ahead. —mako๛ 19:46, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Benjamin Mako Hill: Hi Professor Mako- Is it possible to do my article on a different company, Everlane? There are more references available to make it a notable article. Lbelfor (talk) 04:00, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Lbelfor: Absolutely Lauren! If you think this is going to make it possible to make a higher quality article, that sounds great. (I noticed that you've already put together a pretty great start to an article in [User:Lbelfor/sandbox your sandbox].) —mako๛ 22:57, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Introducing Myself/Article Topic
editHi Professor Mako,
I'm Lauren Brown, I am a senior in Communications and Global Health. I am exploring career options and hoping to find one that will utilize my "Lauren the Loud" skills in some sort of interactive field. Like most people my age my career ambitions change daily but lately its been rotating around a divergent list consisting of Sales, Career Advising, Recruitment and On-boarding, Hospital Administration, HR, Non-Profit Administration, that type of thing. I hope to continue volunteering with organizations focused on advocacy for disenfranchised populations either way. For fun I enjoy art and adventure.
After surfing the requested articles page I am considering an article on "healing ministry" under the Christianity topic area, it is still subject to change however. Thanks, LaurenMichelleBrown (talk) 22:28, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings LaurenMichelleBrown! I'm not really very familiar with the concept of healing ministries. If you think you can find good coverage of this in secondary sources that are separate from ministries themselves (e.g., newspaper profiles, books, journal articles, etc) that establish both (a) what a healing ministries is and (b) how the concept of a healing ministry is notable according to Wikipedia policies, I can see this working. You'll want to be careful to not just rely on material from ministries or people or organizations closely connected to them.
- Take a look around and look for sources and see if this is going to be possible. If you feel like you can establish notability and write a solid article with a neutral point of view, I'd say you're fine going for it. A good article title would probably be Healing ministry. —mako๛ 19:26, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi again! I looked at my options and I think this subject matter is going to be too difficult to find good sources for so I was considering writing an article on the village where my dad grew up and I spent my sophomore summer. Here's a stub in French. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanga_(Bandundu) I've found minimal descriptive information, however there are good sources related to the organizations that work there. Any thoughts? Thanks -- LaurenMichelleBrown (talk) 22:08, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- @LaurenMichelleBrown: Huh. That French article describes it as a medical center not a village. I guess it's a village that is also a medical center? In any case, establishing notability for villages in my experience is much easier than a concept or an organization. There does seem to be quite a lot of information about Vanga online although the most obvious stuff I found seems to be published by organizations tht are active there. The same deal applies here: if you are confident that you can find enough in the way of coverage in third-party sources to support a solid neutral article according, I say run with it. :) —mako๛ 22:27, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Introducing Myself/Article Topic
editHi Professor Mako!
I'm Stan Hu, and I am a junior looking to specialize in Informatics with a possible minor in business. This class greatly interested me because I am involved heavily in many online communities, specifically a game server that I am developing. The topics we have covered so far on the class have been very interesting to me so far and I'm looking forward to learning more!
For my article, I am interested in writing about the new Guild Wars 2 expansion, Heart of Thorns. Though there is an article detailing the specifics of the new in-game content added in with Heart of Thorns on the Guild Wars 2 Wiki, it does not detail a lot of the background and activity behind the expansion, namely the many controversies and complaints about the nature of the release (specifically, the base game, which formerly cost upwards of $60, comes for free with purchase of the expansion, despite the website mentioning you needed to purchase the base game beforehand. The website's text was changed later on, leading to a bunch of discontent users who felt like they got ripped off for buying the game early). I understand writing about such topics might be subject to personal bias, but I believe it is possible to write an encyclopedic article about it!
Side note: Where can I find the list of students that I am to sign up for?
Thanks, --Kyubei (talk) 01:25, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Kyubei: Greetings! You've probably already seen that there are a few paragraphs of discussion over at Guild Wars 2 in a subsection. If you think there was enough coverage in third-party press (e.g., the game press) that the expansion and the controversy around it deserves it's own article, I'd encourage you to go for. Keep in mind that one outcome is that folks suggest that material be merged back into the main Guild Wars 2 article. Good luck! —mako๛ 19:31, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Kyubei: Oh! You can find a list of other students in the class here: https://dashboard.wikiedu.org/courses/University_of_Washington/Interpersonal_Media_%28%29/students —mako๛ 19:32, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

editHello. I am Yea Ji Claire Cho. I am a senior majoring Communication and Psychology. I have couple ideas about the article. 1) Korean American Coalition 2) Park Hang-Ryul, Korean Artist Please let me know what you think.
Thank you! Yeji0210 (talk) 03:20, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Yeji0210: Greetings Claire! If you go with Park Hang-Ryul make sure that your comfortable that you are going to be able to satisfy the criteria over at WP:BIO which is the notability criteria for artists. If you are going to go with Korean American Coalition, you want to make sure that you can satisfy the criteria over at WP:ORG. Either seem like they might be doable but you're going to verify that by making sure you can document and clearly show in the article how the topics will satisfy skeptical Wikipedians about the notability of the notability of the subjects. Good luck! —mako๛ 19:37, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Hello! I have thought about it and researched little on both subjects. I was able to find many articles about the painter, Park Hang-Ryul. But most of the articles were in Korean. Is is possible for me to write using the Korean articles? Thank you! Yeji0210 (talk) 22:59, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Yeji0210: It's fine to back up sources with links to Korean material and, for a Korean person, this is not unusual. I think it will be good if you have at least some references to non-trivial discussion of the subject in reliable sources in English though since the article will be in English Wikipedia. If you think you have that, it sounds good to me. —mako๛ 23:07, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

editHello Professor Mako! My name is Eunice Lee. I am a senior majoring in Communication. I am from South Korea and I visited this summer for two months. I like trying new foods, painting, and listening to music. I would like to write an article about Suncheon Bay Garden. This garden is located in the city that I used to live in Korea. Please let me know how you think about my topic. Thank you!
--Eunicejl319 (talk) 03:33, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Eunicejl319: Greetings Eunice! I think Suncheon Bay Garden sounds like a great topic for an article. I found this article in the Korea Times which looks solid. I think that finding other newspaper articles, descriptions in travel guides, and any other books or articles about its history will be useful. Documenting and supporting facts with sources in Korean will be totally fine although it's good to have at least a few English sources as well since you'll be writing the article in English Wikipedia. Is there an article in Korean? If so, that will likely help and you can probably begin by translating or building from that article. —mako๛ 19:40, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Introduction/Article Topic
editHi Professor Mako,
My name is Siobhan Dowling and I am a junior at the University of Washington. I am currently a Communications major and plan on double majoring in Law, Societies, and Justice. Currently I am interning at the City Attorney's Office in Seattle which combines both communications and law, and I am excited to see how I can apply this course to my own work in the office! Outside of school and work, I love to travel, horseback ride, and go hiking with friends around the Pacific Northwest.
The article topic that I want to write about is the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club(USA). This is the national club for the sporting dog breed and I am particularly interested in it because I used to show dogs!
--Siobhanmdowling (talk) 03:50, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Siobhanmdowling: Greetings Siobhan! If you want to write an an organization, you're going to want to make sure that you can establish notability by looking carefully at the policy at WP:ORG. Take a look through there there, look around for reliable sources and see if you can establish that. If you're feeling comfortable doing that, it sounds great to me. It looks like there's already a pretty great article over at Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever although this doesn't seem to mention the club. —mako๛ 19:44, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Benjamin Mako Hill: Hi again Professor Mako! After looking around a little more, I think that it might be a bit of a challenge to establish notability for this organization because it is a lot smaller than most other dog breed associations. Instead I think that it would be best to change my article topic if that's still okay. I think that a great article topic would be about Food Lifeline, which is a non-profit organization that makes thousands of meals for people in need all across Western Washington. Let me know your thoughts on this new topic idea! Thank you. --Siobhanmdowling (talk) 21:21, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Siobhanmdowling: Greetings Siobhan! The same basic policies (i.e., WP:ORG apply). That said, I think Food Lifeline is likely on the right side of the policy. This page I just dug up will likely help! Good luck! —mako๛ 04:16, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Introduction & Article Topic
editProfessor Mako and Class,
Hello! My name is Cheryse (ENFJ). Born and raised in Hawaii, which is where I started my degree before transferring to the University of Washington. I'm now a senior and a mere two quarters away from completing a double-major in Communication and French. Aside from being a huge sports enthusiast, I have an insatiable appetite for new media, more specifically as it relates to community-building, cultural fluency, and civic engagement.
My proposed topic for this assignment is inverted winger. It is a fairly recent tactical development of the conventional winger position used in soccer. Some examples of traditional wingers who have completely elevated the game in this position include Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Memphis Depay.
Thanks and looking forward to working with all of you!
--Cherysei (talk) 04:01, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Cherysei: An article on inverted winger seems great. I can't exactly tell, looking around, if this should be a new article or if this belongs as a subsection within an existing article and, if so, where. There do seem to be articles in Wikipedia about positions (e.g., Forward (association football)) but it all seems to be a bit of a mess. Anyway, if it's a subsection of an existing article instead of a new article, that's fine since it does seems like you'll be writing this up from scratch in either case. Part of your challenge will be figuring out the correct place for this to land. (PS: I can't remember if I am an ENTJ or an ENFJ but I feel like it's one of the two). —mako๛ 19:52, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Introduction & Article Topic
editGreetings Professor Mako,
My name is Yobel Mengistu and I am currently a Junior at the University of Washington. I plan on majoring in Communications, I've always been interested in media particularly in sports media. My hope is to get my graduate degree after I finish undergrad and work in a sports media related field. I love sports specifically Track and Field and Football. I love to go on hikes and watch movies in my free time.
My topic that I hope to do for this Wikipedia assignment is to do an article on offensive personnel groupings in football. Things such as what personnel is out there on the field when it comes to Running Backs, Wide Receivers and Tight Ends. I think it would be an interesting topic to discuss in detail, and would hopefully inform others on that category.
--Yobelm (talk) 04:47, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Yobelm: Greetings Yobel! This sounds like a it will be a good article but I'm not sure I quite get it. What would the title of the article be? —mako๛ 19:54, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Introducing myself and saying HI!
editHello Prof Benjamin Mako!
My name is Natasha Halim, a UW senior studying communications! My username here on Wikipedia is Halimnat. I love your teachings and lectures, and I find the topics to be really engaging and entertaining! I must say, it is slowly becoming my favorite com class I have taken. I took this class because I believe that it can help me in my future career in advertising, especially in the field of digital media advertising. The topics we discuss in class is really eye opening and helps me to understand the world of media better. After graduation, I plan to pursue and dominate the world of advertising just because it is my passion. I am currently interning at a local advertising agency this quarter. So I am excited to see if I can put the skills I learn in this class towards my internship. In my spare time, I love to draw, watch youtube videos, find new restaurants to try, and zumba.
As for my article, I would love to write an article on either Batik Day, which is a National Day to wear Batik (Indonesian Traditional Clothing) or Meghan Channing Camarena aka Strawburry17 (well known Youtuber).
Looking forward to a great quarter! Halimnat (talk) 05:20, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Halimnat: Greetings Natasha! Batik day sounds like it could be a good article and it looks like it is covered in the press (e.g., [1]). You'll want to look for more coverage in reliable sources to establish notability but if you're feeling comfortable, I'd go for it. Generally speaking, it's a little trickier to write biographies of living people but take a look at WP:BIO to read the guidelines and then look around for sources to see if you feel comfortable going forward with an article on Meghan Channing Camarena. If you feel like you can do, I'd be happy to see you move forward with an article on her as well. —mako๛ 20:03, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Introducing myself and Article Choices
editHi Professor Hill,
My name is Xi Chen. I am a UW senior, majoring in communications and economics. I am Chinese by blood, but was born and raised in Japan. During my free time, I like watching soccer games and clips of the latest fashion shows. I am interested in the advertising/marketing field and would like to find out techniques corporations use in online communities. For the article topics, I chose a few stubs and was wondering if you can give me feedback on them please? Both of them are Japanese cuisine related. 1. Akadama (wine) 2. Tonkotsu (food) Thank you. Xi Chen Xchen0417 (talk) 09:07, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Xchen0417: Greetings Xi! I looks like there are already articles on Akadama (wine) and on Tonkotsu but that both are really short and quite bad! I think expanding either of these would be great! It looks like there are much larger/better versions of both articles in Japanese and a larger version of the article on akadama in Chinese as well. If you read either Chinese or Japanese (it sounds like you might), you might find that translating or finding sources from those articles will be a useful step. In either case, these both looks like really solid contributions and I think you're very unlikely to run into problems with notability for either. —mako๛ 19:58, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Introduction and Topic
editHello Professor Mako! My name is Brandie Canales. I am a transfer student from Cascadia Community College. I have my Associate in Integrated studies. I love football, the Seahawks in particular, high heels, Christmas, the color green, traveling, Voodoo Doughnuts, cats, and musicals. I looked at Benjamin Mako Hill page you were discussing in class. After checking the resources the most interesting thing I found was your wedding vows! I felt that was so original and brilliant. Congrats by the way.
After searching many different things I was interested in, I remembered my love for blown glass. I was hoping to do an article about Chihuly glass, more particularly in Italy. I have seen exhibits of Chihuly glass in both Seattle and Italy. I personally have blown glass at the Seattle glass blowing studio, which is what sparked my interest in the first place.
Great to meet you, BrandieBreezy (talk) 16:13, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @BrandieBreezy: I wish I could take credit for the vows. The idea was 100% from my partner Mika. :) What would the title of your article be. There's already a very extensive article on Dale Chihuly and even a relatively large list of works by Dale Chihuly. What article are you suggesting writing or what stub are you suggesting to expand? —mako๛ 20:07, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- I saw the article on Dale Chihuly, but that is more about him and his life verses Italian blown glass which is more of my focus. I was originally interested in the island of Murano, however I did find the stub Chihuly Garden and Glass which is about Seattle. Maybe I could work on that? I am not sure, what are your thoughts? BrandieBreezy (talk) 01:26, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- @BrandieBreezy: The article on Murano is already quite good. I think expanding Chihuly Garden and Glass sounds promising and totally doable. —mako๛ 01:46, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
Victor Hernandez, greetings!!!
editHello professor Hill,
My name is Victor Hernandez I am a junior at the University of Washington. I am majoring in communications and comparative literature (specifically cinema studies). I am very excited to be apart of this course and learn about how to be a wiki artist. But of course my heart will always belong to instagram.
One idea I had was writing an article about my elementary school, it does not have an article yet and I have a good relationship with the faculty there and I'm sure I could find a couple books or old newspapers to cite. Let me know what you think. Also I was wondering if I got into the coding class for tomorrow morning? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.18.224.112 (talk) 17:09, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings Victor! A few things: (1) It looks like you didn't log in to leave this message so I'm not sure exactly where/how to respond to you. (2) Unless there's something special or notable about your elementary school, I suspect it might be a little hard to make this stick. You can see over at Wikipedia:Notability (high schools) that there's a sense that almost all high schools can be notable according to Wikipedia's policies. I'm not at all sure that this extends to all elementary schools and I suspect it might be tricky to make this stick. If you think you can satisfy WP:NOTE, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, I'd encourage you to think about something else. (3) You did get into the coding class! Were you there? I don't remember seeing you. If so, you might be able to catch up. Let's talk in class tomorrow. Sorry about the mix-up! —mako๛ 20:12, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Intro & Topic
editHi Professor Mako,
My name is Andy Luc and I am a junior at the University of Washington. i was born and raised in South Seattle and intend to major in communications. I really enjoy traveling, food, and photography. i've combined these three enjoyments of mine and created an instagram dedicated to my food adventures ( sweetbombfood) which i started about a month in a half ago.
I have one article idea which I am excited to create and it is going to be about "paper sons" which was a term coined for young Chinese males back in the early 20th century attempting to enter the United States illegally.
andyavocado (talk) 012:13, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Andyavocado: Greetings Andy! If you think you can establish notability — essentially, if you can find the term discussed and explained in multiple reliable sources — I've got no real concerns. This sounds fantastic. If there's an article in Chinese Wikipedia (and if you read Chinese) you might be able to start with or build off that version. —mako๛ 20:15, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Intro and topic
editHi, Professor Mako
I'm Seungyeon Lee or you can call me Ellie, too. I'm a senior majoring in Communications. I'm very glad that I got into your class. Something about me... I love to travel around, take pictures and eat. I went to Japan and Philippines this summer. I do and love instagram very much.
For the topic, I have two in mind but they are pretty similar. They are the Rare market and Beaker. Both of them are boutiques (fashion shops in Korea) Attaching a short article just to give you some ideas. (http://butterboom.com/travel/travelguides/quintessentiallys-top-10-boutiques-seoul/) Lsy2624 (talk) 22:04, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Lsy2624: Greetings Ellie! I'm a little worried about a boutique satisfying Wikipedia's notability criteria. Why don't you take a look at WP:ORG and WP:NOTE and see is you feel that you will be able to establish notability. There's only about a paragraph on each on that link you used and I'm not sure that ButterBoom is going to be very convincing as a reliable source (although perhaps this isn't a problem and I'm just not familiar). Take a look and try to decide if a skeptical Wikipedian would be convinced about notability based on an article you could put together. If you're not 100% convinced, I'd suggest that you try to suggest something else. —mako๛ 20:21, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- I figured that would be hard for me to find many sources, so I came up with another article. It is a location in South Korea, called Haebangchon. Wikipedia has a page for this but it is a stub. So I want to expand it. It is a new hot place nowadays in Korea. More and more young people come and many cafes and restaurants are significantly increasing and many people are starting their business. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haebangchon>
Lsy2624 (talk) 06:25, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Lsy2624: Greetings Ellie! I think that Haebangchon sounds like a great topic. The article has no sources/references at all so there are lots of ways in which it can be improved and expanded. Good luck!
- P.S.: You can link with [[Haebangchon]] and indent by starting with :: (for example —mako๛ 04:01, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

editMy name is Briana Caffee and I'm from Mill Creek, WA. I am a junior at the University of Washington majoring in Communications with a Sales Certificate. In my free time I love running, watching football, listening to music, and spending time with friends and family.
For the topic of my Wikipedia page, I am interested in writing about volleyball practice drills because I did not see any Wikipedia pages devoted to this topic.

Introducing Myself & Topic
editMy name is Rachel Braaten and I am entering my fourth year at the UW. I originally planned on doing mechanical engineering, and did so for two years, but switched into communications as engineering was not for me. I worked at the Lamborghini Lab at the UW for a few years, and hope to work there again after college. My main passion in life is cars, and hope to work with them in the future.
As for my article, I would like to discuss women's role in engineering, as I do not believe it is discussed much in Wikipedia. Rachbr95 (talk) 02:17, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Rachbr95: Greetings Rachel!
I think that an article on Women in engineering would, in some sense, be a little broad for an encyclopedia article. I think that concern is that trying to summarize such a broad topic would almost inevitably lead to original research which is Wikipedia not supposed to host.Writing/expanding an article on a particular event, organization, or female engineer seems like it's probably a safer path. Would that sounds OK? Do you have any ideas of how you might pursue something like this (i.e., an idea for a particular topic)? —mako๛ 20:27, 12 October 2015 (UTC)- I totally take back the whole first part of what I said! There already is a pretty big article on women in engineering! For that reason, and not the other ones I left, I still think you should think about a more specific topic. :) —mako๛ 20:36, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Mako! Just letting you know I have replied to the "Feedback" message you left me in my talk page! --Rachbr95 (talk) 03:19, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Benjamin Mako Hill: I've changed my article around to talk about a specific event, Race Wars. Let me know what you think; my only concern is I may not be able to find enough sources to write about for this, so something I could do is put it into the Fast and the Furious wiki page instead of making it an individual one. What do you think? --Rachbr95 (talk) 03:40, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Rachbr95: Either way sounds good. Thanks for keeping me in the loop. —mako๛ 16:14, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

editHi Professor Mako! My name is Sydney Falk and I am a senior double majoring in Communications and Spanish. During my free time I like to run, hike and play violin. For my topic I would like to do a film maker/photographer named Marcus Haney, who recently became famous from the documentary No Cameras Allowed, which follows Haney’s stories of breaking into music festivals. SydneyElise (talk) 02:57, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
- @SydneyElise: Greetings Sydney! Biographies of living people are a tricky kind of article to write but I think you can do it. Have a close read of WP:BIO and look around at sources and such to make sure you're going to be able to pull it off. If you feel confident, I'd say go ahead with an article about Marcus Haney. —mako๛ 20:30, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Introduction and Topic
editHi Professor Mako! My name is Austin Thomson and I'm currently a junior majoring in Communication. In addition to my schoolwork I am also this years ASUW Arts and Entertainment Program Coordinator. I help put on a ton of the concerts, events, and speaker series here at UW and noticed there is not a wikipedia page for the ASUW. It is a sub-section on the University of Washington page but is highly underdeveloped and doesn't even mention my entity (Arts and Entertainment). I would love to either create an ASUW or being more specific, an ASUW A&E wikipedia page. I'm looking forward to the rest of this quarter and am excited to create a new wikipedia page!
Thanks, AustinThomson (talk) 03:09, 10 October 2015 (UTC)Austin Thomson
- @AustinThomson: So, I think I'd encourage you to look for something else. I'm a little concerned about establishing notability but you could look into that. The bigger concern I have is with Wikipedia's WP:COI policy. Basically, since you are this years A&E Program Coordinator, I think you're just a little too close to the subject. As a result, writing about ASUW A&E would just be a little too close to writing about you and your own ideas. I've found, in this past, that this can really lead to problem and difficulties with keeping the articles long term. Sorry to be discouraging. Do you have any other ideas? —mako๛ 20:39, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Benjamin Mako Hill: Hi again Professor Mako! Just wanted to give you a heads up as I have done some major work on the ASUW article. I am having trouble making a small-ish article out of a pretty large organization with many entities. My work is in my sandbox if you could check it out and provide some feedback! Introducing Myself & My Topic
editHello! My name is Kila Stangeland and I am a Senior majoring in Communications, minoring in Political Science, and currently applying to the Foster's Professional Sales Certificate Program. I love to hang out with friends and family, watch Netflix, and travel. This summer I studied abroad in London, England and had to opportunity to also travel to France, Norway, and Germany during my stay. When I was trying to think of topics, I wanted to write about something I was really excited about and it struck me that I should write about somewhere I visited while on my trip so that I can learn more about the places I loved.
For my Suggested TopicI have two ideas and would love to hear your feedback on which would work best. First is Flor Og Fjaere, a tropical island located off the coast of Norway that I visited with family. I did not see anything about it on Wikipedia and I think it could be a fun topic for me! Second is Paesan London, a restaurant located in Exmouth Market in the same neighborhood in London that I was living. I also did not see anything about Paesan on Wikipedia.
I would love to hear your feedback on these and I am looking forward to a wonderful quarter! Thank you!
(Kilabs (talk) 04:06, 10 October 2015 (UTC))
- @Kilabs: Greetings Kila! I think that Flor Og Fjaere sounds great as long as you can find coverage in reliable sources. I didn't even see an article in Norwegian Wikipedia which made me a little worried. If you can find good secondary sources, I'd go ahead. Generally, islands and such don't have big trouble with establishing notability. Writing about Paesan London is probably a little trickier in terms of establishing notability but take a look at WP:ORG and at sources online and see how you feel about it. You'll probably want several profiles in major newspapers and such. If you've got that in hand, I think it could be great. —mako๛ 21:06, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

I am really looking forward to learning more about wikipedia and other online communities. For my article, I am thinking about writing about Disegno Daily, the London based website, magazine and salon. Let me know what you think. Patmarr (talk) 05:09, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Patmarr: Greetings Patty! Disegno Daily looks legit. The trick and concern is going to be with establishing notability which is often a concern with articles about organizations. Check out WP:ORG and look around for profiles or coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. If you feel comfortable with this, I have no problem moving forward with it! —mako๛ 21:13, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

editHello, professor, my name is Liang Shuang and I come from China. I transferred from Cascadia College in Bothell and I am a junior now, but this is my first quarter in UW, so everything is new for me and I am excited for the new environment. My intended major is communication, and my concentration will be technology and global media, therefore, I am sure I could learn a lot from this class. I love reading and watching Japanese anime. I enjoy staying alone at home, but I also enjoy meeting new friends. I am glad to be in this class. For my topic, I am thinking about to create an article about Shinkankakuha, which is a new perception used in Japanese literature during 19th century. Thank you. LiangShuang97 (talk) 06:07, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
- @LiangShuang97: Shinkankakuha sounds like a good topic for an article. I'm not too familiar with it so you'll want to make sure you can establish notability but I think that as long as you can find multiple reliable sources you should be in good shape. I can see that the topic is mentioned already several times in English Wikipedia. If it is covered in other language Wikipedias, you might be able to work from those texts. —mako๛ 21:23, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

Ricki Moses Introducing myself and topic
editHi professor! So as a way to welcome myself into a new community I embarrassed myself by writing on your actual biography page and not this user page, my bad. I also have not found out how to delete that comment so please by all means delete it for me if you feel like it. But before you delete it please note that I sent it before midnight so even though it was in the wrong spot it was on time. For my article I was thinking of doing either a branch of an organization I worked for over the summer called YWAM San Diego/Baja. Or if I am allowed to I would love to write one about a list of events in a tv series. There are plenty of similar articles on wikipedia so I know the site allows them but I am not sure if the project for class allows them. I wanted to do a list of pranks Jim and Dwight pull on each other in The Office, or something similar. Let me know what you think! & sorry again for writing on the serious page. Rickijonna — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rickijonna (talk • contribs) 07:30, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Rickijonna: No worries! I went ahead and removed it. In the future, you can go ahead and delete/undo anything you want right away. For one, all of your contributions are recorded in Special:Contributions/Rickijonna (your user contribution log) so nothing will be hidden by deletion. More importantly though, keeping Wikipedia happy, healthy, and clean is more important than our class and I will always keep this in mind. The point of these assignments is to engage productively within the community.
- So, in terms of the topics. If you want to go forward with YMAM San Diego/Baja, you should first read WP:ORG and do some looking around to ensure that you're going to be able to demonstrate notability. Also, you will want to read WP:COI to make sure you don't think you have a conflict of interest and, in particular, to ensure that you don't think it would affect your ability to write a neutral article on the subject. Working for the organization in the past doesn't disqualify you but it might raise some red flags so it's probably better to avoid.
- A list of pranks shown on the office might be OK but notability is also a concern here. Why don't you check out the WP:LISTN policy. If you feel like you're on the right side of this and make this argument other Wikipedians, I'm OK trying. It seems like the key point here will be finding places that pranks on the offices are discussed as a group in reliable sources. Let me know what you decide!
- PS, remember to sign you messages with ~~~~. I know it's pretty annoying.) —mako๛ 21:38, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your input! I agree that the YWAM might be a conflict of interests and The Office might be a stretch, so I was thinking that I would like to write an article on Disney's cultural range, including a map of where their main stories have taken place, a timeline of how they have been branching out (or trying to) recently, and although I haven't researched yet I would be interested to look into the effects of the heavy amount of European culture in the successful children's movies and how it has changed over time. Tell me your thoughts! Rickijonna (talk) 03:43, 14 October 2015 (UTC)rickijonna
- @Rickijonna: Greetings! I think that Disney's cultural range is a little tricky for a couple reasons. (1) It seems like it might fall on the wrong side of Wikipedia's prohibition on original research. (2) It's not really a thing in the sense that it might be covered on an article about Disney but might be more challenging to think about as a standalone article? Any other ideas? Sorry this is so tricky! —mako๛ 03:56, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Andrea "Andie" Miller, Introducing myself
editHello Professor Mako. Hope you had a great weekend. So to be honest. I am just now figuring out how to submit my topic. Im not sure where I was even talking before so I apologize for the delay. Still very new to this! But the topic Im thinking of doing is either of the two, but i need advice on deciding: 1) BlackJaguarWhiteTiger Foundation or 2) Curly Hair Patterns. Looking forward to finding out what article I can expand on.MariaMamba11 (talk) 19:48, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- @MariaMamba11: Greetings Andie! Discussing the topic here is exactly what I had in mind and don't worry. Everybody in the class is new to this! I'm not sure what curly hair patterns are so I'm not sure how to reply to this. Can you provide me more information? In terms of BlackJaguarWhiteTiger Foundation, it seems to be a relatively small non-profit which makes me a little worried that it might be tricky to establish notability to other skeptical Wikipedians. If you want to go that route, take a look at WP:ORG and then take a look around for sources to make sure you'll be able to satisfy the rules. Let me know here either way or let me know if you have other ideas. —mako๛ 21:44, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

editHello Professor Mako, So I just wanted to follow up and suggest another topic. I would like to expand on the stub for Surface magazine, which is similar to Disegno Daily but based in the US. Let me know what you think Patmarr (talk) 19:24, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Patmarr: The current Surface (magazine) article certainly has a bunch of problems. I think expanding the article, clearly establishing notability and adding a bunch of references for the claims in the article would be a great contribution. Good luck! —mako๛ 20:03, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Follow Up on Topic
editHi Professor,
My name is Haley Lerner and I am a freshman at UW who currently does not know what she wants to do with her life, but luckily I have got some time. First of all, I feel incredibly stupid because back on the 12th of October, I had posted a message requesting to write an article on the B+ (Be Positive) foundation, only to realize that when I received no response from you, the message never actually posted. I know I most certainly wont be majoring in computer science.
And to add on to my embarrassment, I missed Thursday's lecture due to my battle with Bronchitis which seriously won't go away. I have, however, gotten the notes from a friend and have caught up with the slides online. I hope this message really does go through. I took an extra tutorial and Wikipedia to make sure I got the logistics of it down (even though it's really not that hard!)
Clearly, I have made an awesome first impression! But to tell you a few fun facts about myself, I love to go on hikes, I facetime my dog every weekend, and I have written a novel!
I realize your announcement states that you plan to be offline this weekend so if you could just get back to me about writing my article on the B+ foundation, that would be great! In case you are unaware, the B+ foundation helps support and raise money to fight childhood cancer. My mom is a two time cancer survivor and both working with Make A Wish and the B+ Foundation has helped my heart grow immensely. I am very excited because it has not been exposed in Wikipedia and I would be honored to write about it first.
Once again, my apologies for the technical difficulties with this and my last message. Have a good weekend and I hope to hear back from you soon! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Haleyjlerner (talk • contribs) 19:57, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Haleyjlerner: Greetings Haley! Sorry for the slow reply. I hope you got the message I sent in Canvas (since you missed it in class) that I was offline the whole weekend. Writing about an organization means you that you need to establish notability under the WP:ORG policy. Doing so usually require significant coverage of the organization is multiple third-party reliable sources. I just did a quick search on LexisNexis (one good search engines newspapers" and it didn't seem obvious to me that this was going to be possible. Read and the policy and look around and let me know if you think you can establish notability under WP:NOTE and WP:ORG. If not, it probably makes sense to think about something else. —mako๛ 23:11, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
A Head's Up
editWHen I sat down to do my article on Black Jaguar White Tiger foundation I was a bit beyond my reach only because I kept asking myself if It was notable enough and for th time being it wasn't. I also, didn't want to make it more any more difficult on myself for the later assignments. So I chose from the list of stubs late friday evening and chose a famous jeweler by the name of Munnu Kasliwal. MariaMamba11 (talk) 03:13, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
- @MariaMamba11:Alright. It's totally up to you. Choosing from the list of stubs is probably a safer bet but keep it mind that this doesn't give you a pass on notability either. You'll still need to establish notability through references and everything for Munnu Kasliwal. Good luck and thanks for letting me know! —mako๛ 23:03, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Introducing Myself and Article Topic
editHello Professor!
My name is Ayla Kadah, and I am a junior at UW majoring in Psychology. I am pretty close to finishing the requirements for my major, so I've been thinking about double-majoring the past summer and ultimately decided to try out Communications; I love people and would like to keep my options open in the future. This is actually my very first Comm class, so I'm very excited to be here!
Although I was born in California, I am from Damascus, Syria, and that is where I was pretty much raised. I have always been a huge sports enthusiast and did swimming and basketball growing up. I also love the outdoors, photography, pizza, and people. As a psychology major, I am very fascinated by the way people think, behave, and communicate with one another. For that reason, I feel like this class is super interesting, and I look forward to learning more about online communities!
For my article topic, I will be discussing a very nerdy Game of Thrones fan theory that has gained significant recognition by many credible sites. It is called the R + L = J theory, and has not been covered on Wikipedia before. I was a little hesitant to write about it since I'm not sure whether or not I should treat it like a spoiler or not-- it is only a theory, but you might as well call it a spoiler since it is so well-grounded and pretty much all but proven. I ultimately decided to take it on since I am pretty nerdy when it comes to Game of Thrones and think it would be fun to write about a theory that blew my mind personally when I first found it.
Thanks!
Aylakad (talk) 09:18, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Aylakad: We talked about this in person so I'm not going to say too much more here. I think there's a decent chance that this will end up as part of an existing page (maybe the Game of Thrones page but if, as you suggest, there's been lots of coverage of this in reliable sources, it may qualify as notable itself. I'm looking forward to reading it! —mako๛ 19:10, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for October 25
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Amebocyte, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Tunica. Moving my Article
editIve tried moving my article 3 times and I have no idea where they moved too and now it doesnt show on my sandboxMariaMamba11 (talk) 16:46, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
- @MariaMamba11: Sorry it's confusing. I'm not sure about the exactly path but it looks like you moved it from User:MariaMamba11/sandbox, to User:MariaMamba11/userpage, MariaMamba11, and MariaMamba11/sandbox. The last two are supposed to be for the articles about "MariaMamba11", and "MariaMamba11/sandbox" which are pretty obviously not what you meant to do.
- Obviously, the correct location is Munnu Kasliwal so I moved the page there. Part of the reason this became very confusing I think is that every time you move it page it leaves a redirect in its place so when you go to that page/URL, you are automatically taken to the new location.
- Anyway, the page is in the right place now and I've gone through and posted messages on the pages MariaMamba11 and MariaMamba11/sandbox to request that they be deleted since they're just redirects you never meant to create anyway. You can see the policies on how to do this over at WP:CSD. I used the policy "G6" for uncontroversial maintenance although it could easily also be WP:CSD#R3 (i.e., "Recently created, implausible redirect").
- The way I figured this all out was to look at Special:Contributions/MariaMamba11 which is the contribution history of all of your actions. By looking at what you've done, you can try to figure out where the material has gone. :) Sorry this difficult! I think, at this point, you can focus on just improving the article over at Munnu Kasliwal! Good luck! —mako๛ 18:35, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
Wikipedia Article Feedback?
editHi Professor Mako,
I was not able to find your feedback for my Volleyball Drills Wikipedia article. I tried looking in my Sandbox, on my Talk page, and your Talk page, and the Wiki Ed Dashboard, and I was not able to find anything. Where would the feedback be located?
Best regards,
Briana Caffee (talk) 21:51, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Briana Caffee: I left the feedback on the discussion page associated with the sandbox: User talk:Briana Caffee/sandbox. Strange that you didn't see it. You should have gotten a notification, at least. —mako๛ 00:40, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Benjamin Mako Hill: Thank you, I was able to find where you left feedback. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Briana Caffee (talk • contribs) 01:32, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Article Feedback
editHi Professor,
I hope your visit to Chicago so far is going well. I know I haven't gotten any of your feedback so far because I chose to edit my stub right away instead of start in the sandbox. The link to my article is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beauty_Without_Cruelty incase you couldn't find it. I am still adding more as I research, but I am having major trouble adding a picture. If you could somehow let me know how to do that, that would be great! Anyway thank you for your help and enjoy your trip.

- @Haleyjlerner: Thanks for letting me know. I can see that you've started working over at Beauty Without Cruelty early today. It sounds like a good article. I've left you detailed feedback over at Talk:Beauty Without Cruelty and added the article to the WikiEdu Dashboard. Check out my feedback there! I look forward to seeing you progress on the article! —mako๛ 23:46, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

Reflection Essay
editHello Mako, While polishing up my essay, I really seemed to like it. I feel like I had a lot to discuss, especially with the photograph fiasco! My essay is over the word count. Would you be willing to accept it anyway, or should I cut it down? Thanks! BrandieBreezy (talk) 20:53, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
- For the final paper, please try to stay below the word count. It's obviously easier to say more with more words and a maximum word count manages expectations for everybody. In general, it's harder to do a good job writing less and that's a skill I think everybody should have. —mako๛ 19:41, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
