Article topic

Hi professor Hill! my name is Po-Yen Chueh (Allen) from Taiwan. I am a transfer student from Seattle Central College so this is my first quarter at UW. I applied into communication department last week and hopefully become a good PR in the future. As for my hobbies, I love to go to gym and play badminton. Frankly, I still don't know any of the classmate well enough to introduce them because I was very intimidating by the class material that was given to us. However, I am sure I will be able to introduce some of the classmates in a few weeks.

Greetings JJ! If you go with TRX or Nautilus, you want to make sure that you can satisfy WP:ORG. There's already an article on suspension training so you'd want to make sure that TRX is about the company or their specific product and that it wouldn't just be something you'd find in the article on the subject. —mako๛ 06:20, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

@Ayi1016: Really? Dramabeans seems like it's a pretty long, well referenced, and relatively high quality article and it doesn't seem to be marked as a stub at all. A page on Korean beauty standards might be tricky but I'm OK with you trying. The closest thing is a page on physical attractiveness but I think creating a well referenced article has a chance of sticking. The tricky part is that it's not a typical concrete "thing" in the world and it might be hard to write an article that achieves a neutral point of view and that is an objective description. Beauty standards themselves (in Korea or elsewhere) are subjective things and can vary from person-to-person. If you want to try, I'm OK with it, but I'll warn you that I think it might be very tricky. —mako๛ 04:09, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

@Minjiwoo: Both of those topics are extremely developed already. Can you think about a topic that is either does not exist at all on Wikipedia or that only exists as a very short underdeveloped stub? @Minjiwoo:The list is incomplete but my concern is that writing the list would be too easy and wouldn't require that you know as much about writing Wikipedia articles because lists don't really require that you understand (or demonstrate an understanding in) things like NPOV, notability, sourcing, etc. I think it's better if you write an article and not a list. It would be fine if you wrote about a single type of Kimchi as long as that type does not have an article in Wikipedia yet. —mako๛ 05:58, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Greetings Seobinyoon! As I mentioned in class, I think that the stub is small enough that you can do a fantastic job expanding this into an article. Probably the relevant notability policy is WP:BROADCAST. You'll want to pay close attention to WP:ORG (the notability policy for organizations). You want to check around before you get too attached and make sure that there are multiple sources. Greetings Megan! Joshua P. Williams Foundation sounds like a wonderful organization. The only thing I'd be a little worried about is satisfying the Wikipedia notability policies for organizations. Before you move forward this, take a close read of the policy and then go and look and make sure that you can find enough news sources or whatever else you need to in order to make the case. It looks like JPW Foundation is a small organization with no staff. That makes me worried that — despite the wonderful work its doing — it might fall on the wrong side of the policy. @Lbelfor: I think that the rebranding itself is probably not something that would typically get it's own article but really just a be paragraph or a few sentences in the Yves Saint Laurent (brand) article which already states that the organization is known as Saint Laurent Paris. So while I think that expanding or adding a small section to that article might work, I think it would be better if you pick either an existing stub (Yves Saint Laurent (brand) is much more developed than a stub) or an article that does not exist. I'm Lauren Brown, I am a senior in Communications and Global Health. I am exploring career options and hoping to find one that will utilize my "Lauren the Loud" skills in some sort of interactive field. Like most people my age my career ambitions change daily but lately its been rotating around a divergent list consisting of Sales, Career Advising, Recruitment and On-boarding, Hospital Administration, HR, Non-Profit Administration, that type of thing. I hope to continue volunteering with organizations focused on advocacy for disenfranchised populations either way. For fun I enjoy art and adventure.

Greetings LaurenMichelleBrown! I'm not really very familiar with the concept of healing ministries. If you think you can find good coverage of this in secondary sources that are separate from ministries themselves (e.g., newspaper profiles, books, journal articles, etc) that establish both (a) what a healing ministries is and (b) how the concept of a healing ministry is notable according to Wikipedia policies, I can see this working. You'll want to be careful to not just rely on material from ministries or people or organizations closely connected to them.

Take a look around and look for sources and see if this is going to be possible. If you feel like you can establish notability and write a solid article with a neutral point of view, I'd say you're fine going for it. I looked at my options and I think this subject matter is going to be too difficult to find good sources for so I was considering writing an article on the village where my dad grew up and I spent my sophomore summer. Here's a stub in French. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanga_(Bandundu) I've found minimal descriptive information, however there are good sources related to the organizations that work there. @LaurenMichelleBrown: Huh. That French article describes it as a medical center not a village. I guess it's a village that is also a medical center? In any case, establishing notability for villages in my experience is much easier than a concept or an organization. There does seem to be quite a lot of information about Vanga online although the most obvious stuff I found seems to be published by organizations tht are active there. The same deal applies here: if you are confident that you can find enough in the way of coverage in third-party sources to support a solid neutral article according, I say run with it. :) —mako๛ 22:27, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Professor Mako!

I'm Stan Hu, and I am a junior looking to specialize in Informatics with a possible minor in business. This class greatly interested me because I am involved heavily in many online communities, specifically a game server that I am developing. The topics we have covered so far on the class have been very interesting to me so far and I'm looking forward to learning more!

For my article, I am interested in writing about the new Guild Wars 2 expansion, Heart of Thorns. Though there is an article detailing the specifics of the new in-game content added in with Heart of Thorns on the Guild Wars 2 Wiki, it does not detail a lot of the background and activity behind the expansion, namely the many controversies and complaints about the nature of the release (specifically, the base game, which formerly cost upwards of $60, comes for free with purchase of the expansion, despite the website mentioning you needed to purchase the base game beforehand. The website's text was changed later on, leading to a bunch of discontent users who felt like they got ripped off for buying the game early). I understand writing about such topics might be subject to personal bias, but I believe it is possible to write an encyclopedic article about it!

Side note: Where can I find the list of students that I am to sign up for?

If you think there was enough coverage in third-party press (e.g., the game press) that the expansion and the controversy around it deserves it's own article, I'd encourage you to go for. If you go with Park Hang-Ryul make sure that your comfortable that you are going to be able to satisfy the criteria over at WP:BIO which is the notability criteria for artists. If you are going to go with Korean American Coalition, you want to make sure that you can satisfy the criteria over at WP:ORG. Either seem like they might be doable but you're going to verify that by making sure you can document and clearly show in the article how the topics will satisfy skeptical Wikipedians about the notability of the notability of the subjects. @Yeji0210: It's fine to back up sources with links to Korean material and, for a Korean person, this is not unusual. I think it will be good if you have at least some references to non-trivial discussion of the subject in reliable sources in English though since the article will be in English Wikipedia. @Eunicejl319: Greetings Eunice! I think Suncheon Bay Garden sounds like a great topic for an article. I found this article in the Korea Times which looks solid. I think that finding other newspaper articles, descriptions in travel guides, and any other books or articles about its history will be useful. Documenting and supporting facts with sources in Korean will be totally fine although it's good to have at least a few English sources as well since you'll be writing the article in English Wikipedia. @Siobhanmdowling: Greetings Siobhan! If you want to write an an organization, you're going to want to make sure that you can establish notability by looking carefully at the policy at WP:ORG. Take a look through there there, look around for reliable sources and see if you can establish that. If you're feeling comfortable doing that, it sounds great to me. After looking around a little more, I think that it might be a bit of a challenge to establish notability for this organization because it is a lot smaller than most other dog breed associations. Hello! My name is Cheryse (ENFJ). Born and raised in Hawaii, which is where I started my degree before transferring to the University of Washington. I'm now a senior and a mere two quarters away from completing a double-major in Communication and French. Aside from being a huge sports enthusiast, I have an insatiable appetite for new media, more specifically as it relates to community-building, cultural fluency, and civic engagement.

My proposed topic for this assignment is inverted winger. It is a fairly recent tactical development of the conventional winger position used in soccer. Some examples of traditional wingers who have completely elevated the game in this position include Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Memphis Depay.

@Cherysei: An article on inverted winger seems great. I can't exactly tell, looking around, if this should be a new article or if this belongs as a subsection within an existing article and, if so, where. There do seem to be articles in Wikipedia about positions (e.g., Forward (association football)) but it all seems to be a bit of a mess. Anyway, if it's a subsection of an existing article instead of a new article, that's fine since it does seems like you'll be writing this up from scratch in either case. Part of your challenge will be figuring out the correct place for this to land. My name is Natasha Halim, a UW senior studying communications! My username here on Wikipedia is Halimnat. I love your teachings and lectures, and I find the topics to be really engaging and entertaining! I must say, it is slowly becoming my favorite com class I have taken. I took this class because I believe that it can help me in my future career in advertising, especially in the field of digital media advertising. The topics we discuss in class is really eye opening and helps me to understand the world of media better. After graduation, I plan to pursue and dominate the world of advertising just because it is my passion. I am currently interning at a local advertising agency this quarter. So I am excited to see if I can put the skills I learn in this class towards my internship. In my spare time, I love to draw, watch youtube videos, find new restaurants to try, and zumba.

@Halimnat: Greetings Natasha! Batik day sounds like it could be a good article and it looks like it is covered in the press (e.g., [1]). You'll want to look for more coverage in reliable sources to establish notability but if you're feeling comfortable, I'd go for it. Generally speaking, it's a little trickier to write biographies of living people but take a look at WP:BIO to read the guidelines and then look around for sources to see if you feel comfortable going forward with an article on Meghan Channing Camarena. @Xchen0417: Greetings Xi! I looks like there are already articles on Akadama (wine) and on Tonkotsu but that both are really short and quite bad! I think expanding either of these would be great! It looks like there are much larger/better versions of both articles in Japanese and a larger version of the article on akadama in Chinese as well. If you read either Chinese or Japanese (it sounds like you might), you might find that translating or finding sources from those articles will be a useful step. Hello Professor Mako! My name is Brandie Canales. I am a transfer student from Cascadia Community College. I have my Associate in Integrated studies. I love football, the Seahawks in particular, high heels, Christmas, the color green, traveling, Voodoo Doughnuts, cats, and musicals. I looked at Benjamin Mako Hill page you were discussing in class. After checking the resources the most interesting thing I found was your wedding vows! I felt that was so original and brilliant. Congrats by the way.

After searching many different things I was interested in, I remembered my love for blown glass. I was hoping to do an article about Chihuly glass, more particularly in Italy. I have seen exhibits of Chihuly glass in both Seattle and Italy. I personally have blown glass at the Seattle glass blowing studio, which is what sparked my interest in the first place.

Greetings Victor! A few things: (1) It looks like you didn't log in to leave this message so I'm not sure exactly where/how to respond to you. (2) Unless there's something special or notable about your elementary school, I suspect it might be a little hard to make this stick. You can see over at Wikipedia:Notability (high schools) that there's a sense that almost all high schools can be notable according to Wikipedia's policies. I'm not at all sure that this extends to all elementary schools and I suspect it might be tricky to make this stick. If you think you can satisfy WP:NOTE, I'd say go for it. @Lsy2624: Greetings Ellie! I'm a little worried about a boutique satisfying Wikipedia's notability criteria. Why don't you take a look at WP:ORG and WP:NOTE and see is you feel that you will be able to establish notability. There's only about a paragraph on each on that link you used and I'm not sure that ButterBoom is going to be very convincing as a reliable source (although perhaps this isn't a problem and I'm just not familiar). Take a look and try to decide if a skeptical Wikipedian would be convinced about notability based on an article you could put together. I figured that would be hard for me to find many sources, so I came up with another article. It is a location in South Korea, called Haebangchon. Wikipedia has a page for this but it is a stub. So I want to expand it. It is a new hot place nowadays in Korea. @Rachbr95: Greetings Rachel! I think that an article on Women in engineering would, in some sense, be a little broad for an encyclopedia article. I think that concern is that trying to summarize such a broad topic would almost inevitably lead to original research which is Wikipedia not supposed to host. Writing/expanding an article on a particular event, organization, or female engineer seems like it's probably a safer path. Would that sounds OK? It is a sub-section on the University of Washington page but is highly underdeveloped and doesn't even mention my entity (Arts and Entertainment). @AustinThomson: So, I think I'd encourage you to look for something else. I'm a little concerned about establishing notability but you could look into that. The bigger concern I have is with Wikipedia's WP:COI policy. Basically, since you are this years A&E Program Coordinator, I think you're just a little too close to the subject. As a result, writing about ASUW A&E would just be a little too close to writing about you and your own ideas. I've found, in this past, that this can really lead to problem and difficulties with keeping the articles long term. Sorry to be discouraging. Introducing Myself & My Topic

Hello! My name is Kila Stangeland and I am a Senior majoring in Communications, minoring in Political Science, and currently applying to the Foster's Professional Sales Certificate Program. I love to hang out with friends and family, watch Netflix, and travel. This summer I studied abroad in London, England and had to opportunity to also travel to France, Norway, and Germany during my stay. When I was trying to think of topics, I wanted to write about something I was really excited about and it struck me that I should write about somewhere I visited while on my trip so that I can learn more about the places I loved.

For my Suggested TopicI have two ideas and would love to hear your feedback on which would work best. First is Flor Og Fjaere, a tropical island located off the coast of Norway that I visited with family. I did not see anything about it on Wikipedia and I think it could be a fun topic for me! Second is Paesan London, a restaurant located in Exmouth Market in the same neighborhood in London that I was living. I also did not see anything about Paesan on Wikipedia.

@Kilabs: Greetings Kila! I think that Flor Og Fjaere sounds great as long as you can find coverage in reliable sources. I didn't even see an article in Norwegian Wikipedia which made me a little worried. If you can find good secondary sources, I'd go ahead. Generally, islands and such don't have big trouble with establishing notability. Writing about Paesan London is probably a little trickier in terms of establishing notability but take a look at WP:ORG and at sources online and see how you feel about it. For my article I was thinking of doing either a branch of an organization I worked for over the summer called YWAM San Diego/Baja. @Rickijonna: No worries! I went ahead and removed it. In the future, you can go ahead and delete/undo anything you want right away. For one, all of your contributions are recorded in Special:Contributions/Rickijonna (your user contribution log) so nothing will be hidden by deletion. More importantly though, keeping Wikipedia happy, healthy, and clean is more important than our class and I will always keep this in mind. The point of these assignments is to engage productively within the community.

So, in terms of the topics. If you want to go forward with YMAM San Diego/Baja, you should first read WP:ORG and do some looking around to ensure that you're going to be able to demonstrate notability. Also, you will want to read WP:COI to make sure you don't think you have a conflict of interest and, in particular, to ensure that you don't think it would affect your ability to write a neutral article on the subject. Working for the organization in the past doesn't disqualify you but it might raise some red flags so it's probably better to avoid.

A list of pranks shown on the office might be OK but notability is also a concern here. Why don't you check out the WP:LISTN policy. If you feel like you're on the right side of this and make this argument other Wikipedians, I'm OK trying. Thanks for your input! I agree that the YWAM might be a conflict of interests and The Office might be a stretch, so I was thinking that I would like to write an article on Disney's cultural range, including a map of where their main stories have taken place, a timeline of how they have been branching out (or trying to) recently, and although I haven't researched yet I would be interested to look into the effects of the heavy amount of European culture in the successful children's movies and how it has changed over time. @Rickijonna: Greetings! I think that Disney's cultural range is a little tricky for a couple reasons. (1) It seems like it might fall on the wrong side of Wikipedia's prohibition on original research. (2) It's not really a thing in the sense that it might be covered on an article about Disney but might be more challenging to think about as a standalone article? Any other ideas? I'm not sure what curly hair patterns are so I'm not sure how to reply to this. Can you provide me more information? In terms of BlackJaguarWhiteTiger Foundation, it seems to be a relatively small non-profit which makes me a little worried that it might be tricky to establish notability to other skeptical Wikipedians. If you want to go that route, take a look at WP:ORG and then take a look around for sources to make sure you'll be able to satisfy the rules. Follow Up on Topic

Hi Professor,

My name is Haley Lerner and I am a freshman at UW who currently does not know what she wants to do with her life, but luckily I have got some time. First of all, I feel incredibly stupid because back on the 12th of October, I had posted a message requesting to write an article on the B+ (Be Positive) foundation, only to realize that when I received no response from you, the message never actually posted. I know I most certainly wont be majoring in computer science.

And to add on to my embarrassment, I missed Thursday's lecture due to my battle with Bronchitis which seriously won't go away. I have, however, gotten the notes from a friend and have caught up with the slides online. I hope this message really does go through. I took an extra tutorial and Wikipedia to make sure I got the logistics of it down (even though it's really not that hard!)

Clearly, I have made an awesome first impression! But to tell you a few fun facts about myself, I love to go on hikes, I facetime my dog every weekend, and I have written a novel!

I realize your announcement states that you plan to be offline this weekend so if you could just get back to me about writing my article on the B+ foundation, that would be great! In case you are unaware, the B+ foundation helps support and raise money to fight childhood cancer. My mom is a two time cancer survivor and both working with Make A Wish and the B+ Foundation has helped my heart grow immensely. I am very excited because it has not been exposed in Wikipedia and I would be honored to write about it first.

@Haleyjlerner: Greetings Haley! Sorry for the slow reply. I hope you got the message I sent in Canvas (since you missed it in class) that I was offline the whole weekend. Writing about an organization means you that you need to establish notability under the WP:ORG policy. Doing so usually require significant coverage of the organization is multiple third-party reliable sources. I just did a quick search on LexisNexis (one good search engines newspapers" and it didn't seem obvious to me that this was going to be possible. Read and the policy and look around and let me know if you think you can establish notability under WP:NOTE and WP:ORG. Introducing Myself and Article Topic

Hello Professor!

My name is Ayla Kadah, and I am a junior at UW majoring in Psychology. I am pretty close to finishing the requirements for my major, so I've been thinking about double-majoring the past summer and ultimately decided to try out Communications; I love people and would like to keep my options open in the future. This is actually my very first Comm class, so I'm very excited to be here!

Although I was born in California, I am from Damascus, Syria, and that is where I was pretty much raised. I have always been a huge sports enthusiast and did swimming and basketball growing up. I also love the outdoors, photography, pizza, and people. As a psychology major, I am very fascinated by the way people think, behave, and communicate with one another. For that reason, I feel like this class is super interesting, and I look forward to learning more about online communities!

For my article topic, I will be discussing a very nerdy Game of Thrones fan theory that has gained significant recognition by many credible sites. It is called the R + L = J theory, and has not been covered on Wikipedia before. I was a little hesitant to write about it since I'm not sure whether or not I should treat it like a spoiler or not-- it is only a theory, but you might as well call it a spoiler since it is so well-grounded and pretty much all but proven. I ultimately decided to take it on since I am pretty nerdy when it comes to Game of Thrones and think it would be fun to write about a theory that blew my mind personally when I first found it.

Moving my Article

@MariaMamba11: Sorry it's confusing. I'm not sure about the exactly path but it looks like you moved it from User:MariaMamba11/sandbox, to User:MariaMamba11/userpage, MariaMamba11, and MariaMamba11/sandbox. The last two are supposed to be for the articles about "MariaMamba11", and "MariaMamba11/sandbox" which are pretty obviously not what you meant to do.

Obviously, the correct location is Munnu Kasliwal‎ so I moved the page there. Part of the reason this became very confusing I think is that every time you move it page it leaves a redirect in its place so when you go to that page/URL, you are automatically taken to the new location.

Anyway, the page is in the right place now and I've gone through and posted messages on the pages MariaMamba11 and MariaMamba11/sandbox to request that they be deleted since they're just redirects you never meant to create anyway. You can see the policies on how to do this over at WP:CSD. I used the policy "G6" for uncontroversial maintenance although it could easily also be WP:CSD#R3 (i.e., "Recently created, implausible redirect").

The way I figured this all out was to look at Special:Contributions/MariaMamba11 which is the contribution history of all of your actions. By looking at what you've done, you can try to figure out where the material has gone. :) Sorry this difficult! I think, at this point, you can focus on just improving the article over at Munnu Kasliwal‎! Good luck! —mako๛ 18:35, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

For the final paper, please try to stay below the word count. It's obviously easier to say more with more words and a maximum word count manages expectations for everybody.
