My Policy

Now that I'm here, feel free to put any questions/concerns/comments below (preferably in their own section) if you want me to respond. Please specify where you want any responses (if they're necessary). Unless otherwise specified - or unless there's a good reason to do so - I'll reply here. Further, I can and will reply to deliberately inflammatory remarks in order to provide context, should the situation escalate or be at risk of doing so. BigHaz 07:28, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Carroll

I made the page The Queen v Carroll. It needs some expanding, some of which I will do as I get the chance. Specifically the High Court's decision needs some elaboration and the response section could use some more info. Psychobabble

Alleged Vandalism by user:ExitControl in cult suicide

This was no vandalism. He is an ex-member of Aum Shinrikyo and wanted to show (in an awkward way) that the word cult suicide was closely related to persecution of minority religions and minorities. He thinks that cults are a stigmatized, persecuted minorities like dirty jews. I understand were he is coming from and I think he is right to some extent but I do not agree with his edits. Andries 19:35, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I didn't necessarily mean "vandalism" in the sense that we use it here, but more "something that probably shouldn't have been in the article". Like you, I can sort of see where he's coming from as well, while disagreeing with the substance of his edits (hence the discussion that was going on on his user page). Now that I understand his background (ex-Aum), it becomes slightly clearer. Thanks for the info. BigHaz 22:44, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Thanks for that edit. I didn't see the anon's edit this time, though I have been watching the page - one of the funnier ones, perhaps. Still, this is becoming a little repetative. It's not even as if the page is particularly wonderful... Smoddy | Talk 23:56, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I agree, it is an appalling article in its current form. I am afraid I don't know enough about Australian cricket, bar the sides of the last ten year and the 1948 side, to write it myself. I'm summoning up the courage to write the English one... Smoddy | Talk 12:27, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Eurovision

Hello, mate, I see that you are interested in Eurovision. Would you like to be involved in connecting with more eurovision wikipedians to do up the eurovision pages in a more coherent manner? I have come across the Eurovision wikiproject page, which seems to have been dormant for over two years. It may be an idea to have a look there and see how we could improve the eurovision coverage. I have done up the Congratulations (Eurovision) page so far and put notes about it on the pages of those who performed there. Best regards from Australia, Blnguyen 23:54, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

It's certainly a good idea. I've been doing some rather desultory edits of my own in the general area (as you've probably noticed), so a coherent plan would come in handy. BigHaz 07:21, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

I'd say that Du Bist is very likely to be kept, according the song proposed policy/guideline. Thanks for the notice, I hardly go to AfD these days. Since becoming an admin, I've mostly been deleting things rather than debating them.Blnguyen | rant-line 08:30, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

OK, I have watchlisted. Did you add Category:Eurovision songs to the ones you had created? Because I noticed that Du Bist didn't. Also, I don't know if you keep an eye out for the artists - I don't know much personally, but I had to remove an unsourced gay claim about Brian Kennedy this morning, and also, I was surprised that some person replaced Portal:Eurovision and Elena Paparizou with spam overnight and it was still there 12 hours later. Blnguyen | rant-line 08:36, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
Hi there. I've asked another admin who seems around atm to have a look. I would be a bit compromised as I revived the Eurovision project, I think.Blnguyen | rant-line 03:47, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Haya Rashed Al-Khalifa

Please do not revert other users' edits. If you have a complaint with the verifiability of content, mark it as lacking a citation or contact an administrator. Thank you. Clever curmudgeon 23:18, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

It should be clarified here that the "edit" to which the user is referring was an unverified, poorly written attempt to link the Bahraini diplomat in question to the September 11 attacks. A previous edit had been made reverting it for the exact same reasons as I had done. BigHaz 23:49, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

edit

The edit is not trolling is it a legitimate edit so please do not revert it or I will stalk your contributions and revert all of your edits if you do not provide citations.

This particular comment was made by Clever curmudgeon. While I don't view what he says as being overly serious, since almost all of my edits consist of clearing up grammar/spelling issues on articles, I'm going to leave it here for the sake of completeness. BigHaz 23:57, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
If you have a problem with my edits mark a citation instead of reverting it.Clever curmudgeon 00:00, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm reverting it based on the appalling grammar, not the lack of citation. If you're going to make the claim with a citation added, I'll fix up the grammar accordingly. If you're going to make the claim citation-less and with bad grammar, it'll go. I still say, however, that the burden of proof is on your side, since you're the one claiming that she was involved. BigHaz 00:04, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
 • I have followed up your message with messages on User:Clever curmudgeon's talk page and on the article's talk page. I will further follow up the threats made here. Regards--A Y Arktos\talk 00:25, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Cheers, mate. BigHaz 00:28, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
The grammar was actually flawless, but okay. Clever curmudgeon 01:29, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
"she was well known for having been in collaborating" isn't accurate grammar at all. "She was well known for having collaborated" makes the best sense, although "she was well known for having been in collaboration" would work in context. BigHaz 01:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Boys And Girls (song)

Hi. I'm not sure that a song that wasn't actually part of the contest deserves its own article. Do you think it fulfils the notability criteria? Would an elegant solution be to merge the content into the page for the performers, as per less notable songs by any notable musician? --Dweller 08:43, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

I've prodded it now. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 09:03, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Which picture are you talking about exactly. If it is the promotional picture for the worldwide release of Mambo, it is indeed a screen shot. You can view the video at www.HelenaPaparizou.EU under videos and mambo (eu) Greekboy 04:37, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

That's the one I'm talking about, and like I said you don't need to convince me about it. It was a heads-up to you to make sure that the pic's clearly able to be used. BigHaz 05:51, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

From User:Grace Note

Hi, thanks for your message. I don't think I know you. If I did, you'd probably know that you're wasting your time leaving messages like that on my talkpage. Next time, try hello before throwing the warnings around. It's a lot nicer. Grace Note 07:27, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

For the record, I wasn't warning anyone about anything. I was just pointing out that the best way to respond to trolls is to avoid personal attacks or anything which can be described as such, since that's what they're here for. Not being an admin, I'm hardly the person to warn anyone over personal attacks. BigHaz 07:30, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi BigHaz

I'm probably not the best admin to close the AfD, as I recently accused the nom of trolling on his talk page. I'm sure someone will make the AfD rounds soon and close this. Cheers -- Samir धर्म 08:20, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Ruffus

Hi there BigHaz. I just put Ruffus as the ESC Estonians, and redirected Ruffus (Estonian band) there. The other Irish group looks like it could be deleted to be perfectly honest. Thanks.Blnguyen | rant-line 01:26, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Removing POV statement in Carola

Hi, thanks for removing the non-neutral statement on singer Carola's article. Thanks for taking the time and effort. I cannot easily spot statements like that in articles that I am not familliar with. Cheers. --Starionwolf 04:56, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Not a problem at all. It mightn't be the world's best fix to the problem, but at least as a short-term thing we should have something more functional as an article now. BigHaz 04:59, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Stadia vs stadiums

I notice you reverted this change another user made. Can you provide a reference for this preferred usage, as, to me, "stadia" sounds rather old-fashioned, even mock-learned. Apologies if Wiki policy supports your change; I'm leaving it in for now. You might not have noticed but it was also discussed at the article's talk page. --Guinnog 13:38, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

I'll admit I jumped in before reading the talk page, but when even our own article (Stadium) gives me that as one of the plurals allowed, it seemed justified at the time. BigHaz 22:35, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

When I start a project, I need something major to happen to stop me. Feel free to contribute more info on any of the songs - I'm on the wrong side of the world and of comparatively recent vintage to know all the ins and outs of the entries, so if there was an appearance on this film or in that jeans ad or whatever, stick it on in. Ireland Eurovision

Hi there BiHaz. almost up to Ireland. Would you mind if I did some of those songs. I wish they would bring back the jury so that the Irish ballad records more deserved vicotries. Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 08:01, 12 July 2006 (UTC).

I'd prefer it if you left the initial creation for me (if nothing else, it'll be faster since I've already got the key "templates" saved as Notepad documents on my computer), but feel free to chime in as I go with extra info. If you want, I could skip from Estonia to Ireland. BigHaz 08:03, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Yeah thanks, I'll just use the your stuff as a model to get the basic info and style. Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 08:09, 12 July 2006 (UTC).

That was quite mean

I attempted to scare him off....it was sarcastic. Anyways he hardly gets a slap for saying he is raping children, please. Is there anybody with out a bias here? W/e, it is all subjective. You personally attacked me by hurting my feelings, but meh. I apologize for breaking wikipolicy.

I do take your point, but under the circumstances you could've chosen a better way of scaring him off. Given that the article he was vandalising was dealing with Israeli military action, throwing the word "Nazi" around the place strikes me as probably not the best way of seeming unbiased. A warning may have been slightly too hair-triggered on my part, but given the way that the editing of that article was starting to go it seemed to require speedy action. For the record, the comment above was added by User:Flyintothesky in relation to a post I had made on his talk page. BigHaz 01:28, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Like I said I apologize and you are still critizing me. But, if the guy wants to make those types of comments on the internet and leaves his IP address up, I'm going to be rude to the vandal. Yes, I went over the top. And I apologized....Next time I'll post the exact coordinates of his location...but I'm sorry I'm not perfect like you.--Jerluvsthecubs 23:53, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm not in fact criticising anyone, merely explaining my reasoning for doing what I did. I'm certainly not claiming to be perfect, since I in fact said that I may have been slightly hair-triggered, but we won't let the facts get in the way of a good argument. For the record, the fact that the anonymous vandal "left his IP address up" is a function of the internet itself, rather than the vandal. BigHaz 00:22, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Eurovision songs

I must say you have embarked on a really tiresome mission - there are a few hundreds of ESC entries to date! Unfortunately, for most of them it is really hard to tell anything more than what you can find out at the Diggiloo Trush, or what goes into the artist/country article anyway. So, I am afraid these will remain "permastubs". Also, as concerns the interpretation of the lyrics, please be aware that there sometimes is more than one possible interpretation, so you might have quite a lot controversies within this area.

With regard to such less "notable" ESC entries, as well as one-hit-wonder participants, how about having them all described in "country in the ESC in a given year" article, where the selection process and all other related trivia and stuff would go? This would make for a more substantial article in terms of size, as well as spare the readers some clicking. I was also wondering whether you might find the Template:Infobox ESC entry useful. Changing userboxes on your page

I'm sure there's a good technical reason both for doing this (particularly without telling me) and the fact that the userboxes you've changed don't all actually come out as userboxes, but if you get the chance would you mind fixing the mess so that my userboxes in fact are userboxes and not ugly-looking code? BigHaz 07:03, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Further, I'd suggest that marking edits which could (and in this case did) result in major changes to how the page looked is hardly a "minor edit". BigHaz 07:15, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
BigHaz, I apologize for the inconvenience. In the cases of the "ugly-looking code" on your page, it was a matter of separating many "is" from "is interested in" redirects for religion userboxes as part of WP:GUS. I see you already removed the redirects. You might be interested in looking at other userboxes in the directory at User:Rfrisbie/Userboxes/Religion. If you don't see what you are looking for, I am willing to help you design one or more boxes and place them as your own subpages, which could be added to the directory, if you choose. Again, my apologies, but some more inconveniences are inevitable from this controversy. Regards, Rfrisbietalk 12:41, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Apology accepted, however I would ask two things in future: Firstly, that you take the time to Preview the edits to make certain that the box (as against the code) is there. Secondly, that you not mark an edit which alters the appearance of a page as Minor. BigHaz 22:28, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Thank you. I was aware of the code rather than the box being there. That was a result of unmerging the "is a..." redirects from the "is interested in..." redirects caused by admins against the "is a..." boxes. I deliberately didn't move the "is a.." boxes so they could be pointed elsewhere if users so chose. The "m" flag was at the request of "Recent changes" patrollers. I know this is not an ideal state of affairs, but I take responsibility for pissing off some people in the hopes of untangling a mess and offering people some real choices in userspace that no longer are available in templatespace. Again, thanks for accepting my apology. Also, If you still are interested in displaying any userboxes more like your links originally produced, I'm willing to help you create them in your userpages and list them on userspace directories. Regards, Rfrisbietalk 23:00, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

CongratulationsEurovision

Hello BigHaz. Can you look at this template that User:Alexandru Busa created please? I think that Alexandru is a big Ruslana fan judging by his contribs and the POV is shown in this template. AFAIK, the 14 most popular songs were selected irrespective of whether the artist was dead (Domenico Modugno), in seclusion/refused (ABBA and France Gall), so I feel that Alexandru gives us the impression that Ruslana snubbed the show when she was in fact not selected for the show. I feel she should not be there as she was not even selected and I think the template gives us the false impression that she was...unless I'm wrong and she was selected and refused them permission to use her song...Blnguyen | rant-line 02:55, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Reply on Blnguyen's talk page under the same title. The gist being that yes, I do think it's misleading and possibly POV. I also suggest other corrections which should be made to the template, due to variances between it and the facts of the show. BigHaz 03:46, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Minor Edits and AfD

I don't have the slightest idea of what you're trying to tell me. User:Ejrrjs says What? 23:28, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Comments responded to on the user's talk page under the same heading. For completeness purposes, the comments deal with a superfluous subheading the user had re-added to an AfD discussion. As a result of this subheading being there, the entire AfD page for July 23 was thrown out of whack. It was also rather pointless to have a "Comments" subheading, since that's what AfD is about anyway. BigHaz 23:33, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Now I see. I didn't insert it, to start with. See diff. Then you fixed it and appeared again. You know, it takes time to find references. It might be that I have opened a window before your intervention, got a edit conflict, cut and paste and then decided to add something else and get the subheading mixed. I didn't even noticed that it was there. It shouldn't be there and it shouldn't affect the rest. Tell the developers, not me. User:Ejrrjs says What? 04:20, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
At least we agree that it shouldn't be there, but any subheading like that successfully alters the rest of the AfD listing. Further, it still looks as though this user added it to me - but in a case like this we can play "he said" until the cows come home without an answer. BigHaz 07:51, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Diva (song) DYK

Hi there BigHaz, I recently expanded this stub creation of yours, so I decided to nominate for inclusion on the Template:Did you know on the Main Page. I did put your name on the nomination as the orginal creator also at Template talk:Did you know, but it appears the updating admin forgot to send you this postcard. If you create an article with something interesting, please nominate yourself - it doesn't even have to be very weird. Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 01:01, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

On 22 July, 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Diva (song), which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

-- Grue  19:19, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Does this mean that the article has already appeared on DYK or will appear later? DYK's the next part of this site I'm trying to get the hang of. As far as nominating it goes, I'll have to remember that for future reference. I've been a little reserved about the idea, since I always take the view that whatever I write might be interesting to me but is deadly boring to everyone else. BigHaz 01:10, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
It doesn't have to be that interesting, I originally only looked for counterinutitve or bizarre facts, but I saw that most of the suggestion were not of the unusual category. Blnguyen | rant-line 01:58, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
Fair enough point. The other aspect of DYK that would probably trip me up is that I have a tendency to label new articles I create as stubs (which they don't like). They mightn't be stubs in reality, but I take the view that I know a little bit about a rash of subjects, rather than enough to create a full article on anything in particular. Still, we'll see how we go. BigHaz 07:52, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I still will have to talk to Alexandru because I feel that the template is POV, as I don't think his posts addressed my point. Sertab and Helena performed their song in truncated form because they were selected as the 14 finalists and I didn't think that it was up to this Svalte chap to select the 14 finalists. As for the montage, I wrote the description in the Congratulations (Eurovision) article from my watching of my recording of the show. There was a winners' montage but there were only about 15 or so, for about 10 seconds each, it had Marie N, Charlotte Nilsson, Secret Garden, Niamh Kavanagh, Herreys, Bucks Fizz, Marie Myriam... and more but those were the most recent ones which were shown and Ruslana was not in it and I feel that they (EBU) would have just chosen whichever songs they liked as they owned the footage irrespective of what the artists thought (dead or alive). Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 01:01, 24 July 2006 (UTC).

Hi there. An anon prodded this. Seems from his edits he doesn't like Shiri Maimon. I have depordded. Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 03:18, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Ironically, that's one of the very few existing ESC entries that I've not yet touched. If it'd been deleted (i.e. if responsible admins like yourself hadn't seen it), I would simply have given it the standard notability treatment per the other ESC entries - assuming that's the way to go about these things. BigHaz 06:47, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi Big Haz

May I bring to your attention the Turkification article. There seems to be an edit war involving a couple of Greek users who seem all the too-eager to insert some highly POVish statements. It seems that there are unable to comprehend the scope of the article and Im unable to revert for fear of breaking the 3RR. Would you take a look over there? Thanks in advance:)--Kilhan 12:27, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
