ArbCom 2017 election voter message =

edit

Hello, Boleyn. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Boleyn. I have removed the template you added on 2017-18 Aizawl F.C. season page as I think I added the appropriate references. Re "Beauty & the Bull": I understand IMBd isn't dead reliable, but I've seen the film on TCM... The existence of the film isn't, AFAIK, in doubt; Ford's own page mentions it, with a cite to IMDb for it. And my understanding of IMDb is, the cast & crew isn't open for editing; even if it is, I took the credits right off the film as broadcast. Any suggestions how to resolve this? (If it turns out the page needs deleting, it's not so much work in that I'm really going to care...) TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 23:08, 7 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Trekphiler. I don't think deletion is being considered by anybody, it just needs a reliable source or two added. WP:IMDBREF represents the consensus on imdb, and although I'm sure you were careful to get the information right from the credits, that's still unverifiable/WP:OR and we need evidence for an encyclopaedia. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 09:05, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
I managed to find it listed at TCM.com, so I just swapped websites, with IMDb as an external link, instead. As for deletion, I've had one new page deleted with scarcely a word of discussion, so something badly sourced getting the axe looked possible. (And TBH, I'm not seeing the beef about IMDb, but...) Anyhow, it looks like it'll stay up; if anybody else wants to add, now they can. ;p TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 09:11, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
And "not seriously considering deletion"? Really? TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 23:28, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hiiumaa Parish

edit

Hi! Thanks for mention about article Hiiumaa Parish. But the problem is now that the municipal elections of Estonia were held 15 October and the creating of this municipal parish is ongoing. Now there is this parish officially without structure, official webpage and official links. Maybe you insert a category about ongoing process or something? :) Kalev Kask 14:10, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, ask, thanks for looking into this. I wouldn't worry about the creation being ongoing, that's true for a lot of topics. Where did you get the information contained in the article? Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 15:37, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

I don't have source of Akeem Scott so you can help me to find source article. Thank you so much!.Lon123 (talk) 01:40, 10 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Lon123, please see WP:BURDEN - it is your responsibility to add sources to any information you add on Wikipedia, particularly on living people. You musty have got the information in the article from somewhere - where did you get the information from? Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 10:04, 10 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

I've edited the article and added a source - both external links you had given had no information on him, but I found some elsewhere on those sites. It's still in danger of being tagged for deletion, but less so. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 10:13, 10 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

edit
Hello Boleyn, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, go here. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:27, 12 December 2017 (UTC) Reply

The music video has reached #1 trending on youtube I am just finding references. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smartalek33 (talkcontribs) 17:13, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Smartalek33, thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately, Youtube streams aren't counted towards notability, but hopefully there are other sources out there if it has been popular. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 19:26, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

It did get number 9 single on the itunes pop music video charts. I have references. smartalek22 (talk) 19:37, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

That is good, Smartalek33, although that would not count towards WP:NSONG or WP:GNG either. Hopefully there will be something though, or the song could be mentioned at the album or artist's article. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 21:07, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Here's possibly its main claim to notability, and I added it to the lead. The video was crowd-funded in a Kickstarter campaign. I think there should be a lot more information about this added to the page, it seems quite notable, and even more notable that what will certainly become a hit video for a hit song is a Kickstarter funded song. Does that happen often? How many times a year? I have no idea if it does or not, or how often. Maybe that's an avenue for sourcing. Randy Kryn (talk) 22:55, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

I guess we just have to wait for next week when the single reaches billboard charts. Smh smartalek22 (talk) 08:29, 15 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Smartalek33, I understand your frustration, but the reality is this may not chart in the most recognised charts and not every song will be notable. With this it's perhaps WP:TOOSOON rather than non-notable; hte good thing about the redirect is that it can be undone at a click when/if there is evidence of its notability. Thanks for working on it, Boleyn (talk) 10:21, 15 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of article

edit

Hi Boleyn, I just logged in to Wikipedia and found a message pointing to a deletion of an article I initiated: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Danny_Wan. I get that the decision was to delete it, and I am sorry I did not have the opportunity to register why I thought the article merited inclusion. It is true that not every councilor should be included in Wikipedia, and I understand that not every "first" should be included either, but I disagree with the assertion that the person in question is not notable. 1) Oakland is a major city. It is underrated, but it is. 2) The councilor in question brought the first gay pride celebration in the city in the late 1990's, as noted by a primary source. That's not notable these days, people take that for granted, but back then, for a city in the San Francisco Bay Area, I think that it is. 3) I felt the article was well-written enough and sourced enough to ensure the other biographical references are substantiated (e.g., year of graduation, etc). So I am disappointed that it was deleted, rather than say re-written; but I will defer to the decision; though I would appeal to re-instating it if granted the chance. Given the list of Oakland councilors currently extant, and the standard by which "notability" is granted for "non-notable" offices, and that I wrote the article based on these, I would not count most of these folks to have biographical articles in Wikipedia (except say, the current and past mayors of Oakland). But they are still there. So I'm perplexed by the standard Omandra (talk) 03:28, 15 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Omandra, thanks for messaging me. It's frustrating when you take a wikibreak and miss a discussion like this. I think the discussion reflected your point 1), a city the size of Oakland might have notable councillors whereas smaller places almost definitely wouldn't, but it is not an automatic pass by any means and 2) would only be notable if it met WP:GNG, and the coverage was found to be quite far off meeting that. There are many other articles you'll come across that should probably be substantially improved or deleted too, unfortunately there's a huge backlog to be looked at. You have options: you could contact the closing admin and ask if they can re-create the old article at Draft:Danny Wan, where you could work on it and then submit it via WP:AFC, making clear that it was previously deleted. You would need to find a lot more coverage than there was originally though. Good luck! Boleyn (talk) 10:26, 15 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • Thank you, Boleyn, for the options presented. I did quite a bit of digging for that article, as I do try to research and write comprehensively for any topic, especially bios, and whatever has been cited is coverage for that individual and his narrative (which frankly, as you alluded to, is more than I could say for other articles). I'll keep those options in mind in the future. All the best, Omandra (talk) 23:06, 19 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Hhhhhkohhhhh, thanks for working on this article. It's a good start, although it definitely needs more sources to make its notability clear. YOu could submit to WP:AFC now or after some more work to make it more likely to go through AFC and then WP:NPP. Thanks again, Boleyn (talk) 18:38, 16 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
But, how to submit through WP:AFC now? Can you help me? Hhhhhkohhhhh (talk) 01:10, 17 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

edit

Hello. Two treaties were signed with the name, this is why I thought it's necessary to create a page with "treaties of Brest-Litovsk". When referred to "treaty of Brest-Litovsk" as a singular, there is no need for any disambiguation, we all know what we are talking about. --Io Herodotus (talk) 07:58, 17 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Io Herodotus, thanks for sending me a message. I think it is best deal with as a redirect to the primary page (Treaty of Brest-Litovsk) which has a hatnote to the other. 'Treaties' wouldn't be a dab (because neither is commonly referred to as 'Treaties'). If there were more, it might be worth having as a list of treaties, but for two I think it would be unnecessary. A list or an article on the two together are the best possibilities (and I think probably not needed) but it wouldn't make sense as a disambiguation. Thanks for trying to reolve ambiguity. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 08:03, 17 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Orangedepok1. It is always frustrating when you create an article and it's deleted. I would recommend using WP:AFC, it's a good way to get advice. I can't ensure any article isn't deleted, any Wikipedia editor can initiate a deletion discussion at any time, which may come out as keep or delete. However, it's far more likely to be deleted if it has no sources - and you have a responsibility to add sources to any information you add to Wikipedia, please see WP:BURDEN and WP:V. If you think an article was unfairly deleted, you can contact the admin who deleted it and ask them to move it to your sandbox where you can work on it and re-submit it via WP:AFC. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 07:29, 24 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

I think it won't qualify for G5, as "a page created by a banned or blocked user (Bryan4562013) in violation of the user's ban or block" because he wasn't blocked or banned when he created it, so he wasn't violating a block/ban at the time (unless you think he was a different, already blocked/banned user, socking as Bryan...). The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Bargain Hunt (disambiguation)

edit

Hi Boleyn, I noticed that you have proposed deletion of page Bargain Hunt (disambiguation). The reason, I created this page is because there are 2 pages on Wikipedia now - one for the TV series and another for the retail chain. I think this can be included on the disambiguation page of Bargain - which actually redirects to wikipedia page Bargain - rather than having a separate disambiguation page. What do you think about this? I understand that there are only 2 pages with this name and is not very confusing and hence can be deleted. Pratty (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 14:48, 31 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Pratty. There is room for confusion, it's just best dealt with via a hatnote per WP:2DABS. It would be a WP:PTM at the Bargain dab and so shouldn't be included there. Thanks, Boleyn (talk) 15:05, 31 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Updated the page you marked for speedy deletion to appear more encyclopedic like it was originally intended

edit

Please see Chameleon_mini_(hardware) and the attached reasonable contest to its speedy deletion. I would like for you to remove the banner, not for me to have to do it and then have an editor flag it again because the edit is found disagreeable to their tastes and/or knowledge of the underlying topic matter. It's a serious NFC security tool (that hackers, feds, terrorists et. al. all know about and use) that has many uses. The Wikipedia page was missing, so I added it. The underlying "OS" (if you will) driving this piece of hardware, that *yes* like most things, is sold commercially is a well-respected suite of open-source software with many followers. Additionally, the schematics for reproducing the device are freely available to the public under an OSS licence and consequently multiple manufacturers have produced versions of the device for commercial retail applications (the Rev. E and G boards have different manufacturers -- no touting of a single product here). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxieds (talkcontribs) 23:25, 4 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Much arises from what I am doing elsewhere in the wikiverse - and I start articles off here in the hope that others will take them on. Jackiespeel (talk) 19:27, 5 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Jackiespeel, thanks for getting back to me. The WP:BURDEN is on the person creating the article to reference it, and whatever your source is, it should be added. However, if it is from a Wikipedia article (English or another language), it still needs a source - see WP:UGC, Wikipedia is not itself a reliable source and I've gone astray myself using it to create articles elsewhere on the project, and only realising the information was faulty when it required a lot of work to put it right. If you don't have a reliable source for your information, please don't add the information to Wikipedia. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 19:38, 5 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hiya!

I read Wikipedia:Village_pump_(idea_lab)#Changes_to_article_creation but my response seems slightly offtopic so I figured I best post it here. You wrote: "...spend a lot of my time contacting editors asking them to add their source(s). This takes up a huge amount of my time".

It doesn't have to. You can add extra buttons to the Wikipedia interface. I have added some buttons to my interface that allow me to quickly post certain templates. You can do the same (I can help you if you want, and so can many of the people who hang out over at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)).

My interface currently looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/lhA7Y9Z.png

You'll notice that there are some extra buttons. In the screenshot you see what happens when I click all additional buttons in a row, from the smiley to the number 4. The template gets added to the textbox I am writing in. You could of course make your own custom standardized messages, and re-use them with the click of a button. Typing the same stuff over and over again gets boring fast. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 04:38, 6 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, The Quixotic Potato, I appreciate the advice. Boleyn (talk) 19:35, 9 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi. if you see an article like this and you think it's worth the effort, don't hesitate to let me know - I'm bilingual German-English (and French). The best thing to do first however, is move it to draft. Such translations are often gobbeldygook. I've cleaned it up considerably (the machine translation left a lot of nonsense), but if you have a moment, please give it a proof read. Thanks. Hello there. I was just importing sources when your message came through. Would you like to review and remove tag? Thanks.--Po Mieczu (talk) 14:35, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I've changed {unref} to {inline}. If you move the sources inline, then feel free to just remove the tag. Thanks for creating this article, Boleyn (talk) 14:46, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

OK, thank you, I'll do that.--Po Mieczu (talk) 15:38, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Unanswered question

Please you're yet to answer my question while it is clear you saw it. –Ammarpad (talk) 18:02, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Ammarpad. I'm not sure why you are saying 'it is clear you saw it' - you didn't WP:PING me so I'm afriad I did not see it. I have added the citation needed tags as you requested, but WP:UNSOURCED will give you more details: The burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds or restores material, and is satisfied by providing a citation to a reliable source that directly supports the contribution. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 18:29, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

I did not ping you becasue it is your esponsibility to watch people's talkpage when you post there, especially when you ask question and expecting reply. You still didn't answer my question on what actually needs to be sourced but I see you oddly tagged President of Ghana, Vice and CJ for sources. Fine. You should've have told me that straight when I asked you exactly what needs sourcing. Now you're fundamentally wrong. 2018 in Ghana is not article but you wrongly thought it is. We don't cite the sky is blue. That's why 2018 in the United States, 2018 in the United Kingdom, 2018 in France, 2018 in Iran, 2018 in Canada, 2017 in Thailand and all pages in Category: 2018 by country, None of them have given citation for the standard incumbents, because of common sense. But all these pages you didn't tag them with {{citation needed}} and you didn't send their creators your accusatory semi templated message titled "source". I only created 2018 in Ghana; some people created them (2018 in x) in bulk because they're pseudo-categories to maintain standard information about countries and they use standard templates, they are not articles as you wrongly assumed. That's why when I plainly asked you what "exactly" needs sources you you can't give me "plain" answer except to return sophistic response. Now if you are still going to add additional {{cn}} to 2018 in Ghana, then you should use Category: 2018 by country for easier work, because all the 200+ pages need that also. And also track all there creators from there and send them your semi-templated, incriminating message. Then please do not send me that kind of semi-templated message which you sent in bulk to multiple people again. I opted out completely. Either fix it yourself or post at the talkpage of the affected article, (i.e post at Talk:2018 in Ghana) or tag it for necessary cleanup or proceed with any deletion process if necessary. –Ammarpad (talk) 13:17, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to say this, but I can't put the sources on those adult contemporary top 10 articles by myself. It's way too much work for me. I would like to kindly ask you to ask another user to put the sources on those articles for me. It would be the nicest thing for me. Thank you!

Lawshall (disambiguation)

edit

The Lawshall (disambiguation) has provided an index for the last six years. It is this sort of pettiness that forced my decision to withdraw from Wikipedia. Up to 10 hours a day I used to spend on articles like these. My withdrawal is yours and the Wikipedia community's loss. If you really care you would of course provide a substitute index. League Octopus 19:15, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@League Octopus: Thank you for creating the articles for Lawshall, however this is not the purpose of DAB pages, why don't you create a category or template for Lawshall instead. We had Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2011 January 5#Category:Cliburn but 17 articles should be enough. Please don't go away, we are just saying that the DAB is not appropriate, that's all. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:56, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I agree wholly with Crouch, Swale. Boleyn (talk) 20:02, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
This has now been suggested at the AFD, indeed I have made this mistake with Ingatestone (disambiguation) but I have never seen a DAB page based on topics that a part of a larger topic. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:29, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I've now cobbled together {{Lawshall}} - further refinement by template experts, or local experts, would be very welcome. I've added it to Lawshall, and (as long as folk think it's a Good Idea) it now needs to be added to all the other articles involved. PamD 21:18, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks PamD I have now added it to all the pages. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:22, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
And thanks, @Crouch, Swale: for spotting the necessary disambiguation - because it was a hatnote it didn't show up in orange as a "link to dab page"! PamD 21:26, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Boleyn, thanks for your message. Yes the sources are from those websites so should they be put under 'references'? Thanks, Matthew.

Suggestion

How about actually improving articles instead of wasting time, templating users who know how to improve articles? Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 22:06, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

It's a shame you've responded in this way. I alerted you to the fact you had created an article with no sources at all, nicely worded. That is all. Boleyn (talk) 22:09, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

I actually redirected the article in question to the 2018 Winter Olympics, something you failed to notice. Fact is templating users who have created over 800+ articles is a complete waste of time. I encourage yourself to use your time more constructively. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 22:13, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Again, it's a shame you have taken so personally someone contacting you nicely to encourage you to add your references to a unreferenced article you had created. Boleyn (talk) 22:14, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Because its a complete waste of time to message someone who has just redirected the article. How is a redirect an unreferenced article?? Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 22:19, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Jamaica at the 2018 Winter Olympics seems to still be in existence, as it certainly was when I messaged you, as the message was actually me reviewing the article for New Page Patrol. Boleyn (talk) 22:23, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
But you can easily open the page up and see I only redirected the page. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 22:55, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • (talk page watcher) The problem is that although NPP listing is clever enough to spot a new article being created over what was previously a redirect, it doesn't then recognise that the appropriate person to whom to send reviewing messages is the one who added the major content, not the one who made the redirect. In this case they were only created 6 hours apart, but the same thing seems to happen even if the redirect was years old. So Sportsfan created a perfectly legitimate redirect, but Boleyn's NPP review messages got sent to them instead of to the appropriate editor NiklasBillinger1. That's just an unfortunate effect of how the NPP software seems to work, and experienced editors should just shrug off the occasional misdirected message. When reviewing at NPP it's often useful to have a look at the article's history, which can sometimes be quite revealing. PamD 23:54, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • @Sportsfan 1234: has made a valid point here. @PamD, you've to remember the person behind a semi-automated tool is responsible for all its action. So I don't see the point of blaming NPP tool. –Ammarpad (talk) 09:34, 16 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Deletion discussion about Kem Cetinay

edit

Hello, Boleyn,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Kem Cetinay should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kem Cetinay .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

Atsme📞📧 03:55, 15 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Atsme, thanks for looking at this. I only created it as a redirect, 178.96.28.132 made it an article, but I have commented at the deletion discussion. Thanks for keeping me in the loop, Boleyn (talk) 06:56, 15 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
