Serial commas

edit

Hello, your edit regarding serial commas at About the sandbox was OK, but normally it's best to just leave them as they are; they're neither required nor prohibited here. Graham87 (talk) 14:31, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Please refrain from making test edits in Wikipedia pages, such as those you made to User:Abdirahmanabdilahi/sandbox, even if you intend to fix them later. Your edits have been reverted. If you would like to experiment again, please use your sandbox. Fun fact: edit summaries are important, and they're not really for joking around, despite what you said here. Thanks. Drmies (talk) 21:57, 21 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Ok. But how is nominating a page for G11 a test edit? BombCraft8 (talk) 21:58, 21 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Please stop making test edits to Wikipedia, as you did to Homo hop. It is considered vandalism, which, under Wikipedia policy, can lead to being blocked from editing. If you would like to experiment again, please use your sandbox. As mentioned before, please do not joke around in edit summaries. LR.127 (talk) 06:57, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, BombCraft8,

Why did you get into a dumb edit war with a troll? You could have received a block for all of these talk page reverts. Additionally, editors are free to remove messages from their talk pages, even vandals and trolls, so you were incorret to insist on replacing a warning again and again. If you do this in the future, you can expect to receive a block for edit warring. Please don't make this mistake again. Liz Read! Talk! 05:21, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

If the page itself was vandalism, it's better to tag if for speedy deletion than get in an edit war. Liz Read! Talk! 05:25, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reporting sockpuppets

edit

To report accounts for suspected sockpuppetry, you should go to WP:SPI. Alternatively, it's easier to use Twinkle to make a report. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 01:44, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I know, the main reason why I just put a notice on the talk page was cuz I didn't know the sockmaster's username BombCraft8 (talk) (contributions) 03:22, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Moving pages

edit

Hello, BombCraft8,

Please do not even think of moving a category. That is a task for page movers, bots and administrators. For example, in you wanted to move Category:Wikipedians who are indefinitely blocked for promotional user names to a category with a different name, you'd have to manually move all of the category contents (which is 325,870 pages) to the new category. Pages aren't automatically recategorized when you move a category to a different page title, you, or a bot, has to manually recategorize each one of those pages. Are you ready to spend the next few years taking care of that chore? Of course not, that's why we have bots to handle this task.

If you really believe a page move is important, it's best to make a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves and your request can be considered. For category renames, post a request under "Speedy renames" at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion#Speedy renaming and merging, using the appropriate criteria in your request. If you have other questions about page moves or categorization, please bring them to the Teahouse. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 23:49, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, despite you've said in your edit summary the serial comma is not clearly superior as a matter of course. It is perfectly optional in many cases, and unilaterally enforcing its use across a large number of articles articles is considered disruptive. Remsense ‥  13:37, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

But what about removing the dash in "coordinates"? MOS:COORD spells coordinates with no - BombCraft8 (talk) (contributions) 13:38, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, give me a reason why these articles are better without oxford commas BombCraft8 (talk) (contributions) 13:38, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't have to. They're not better with them, and MOS:SERIAL specifically allows both. As I said, the main point is enforcing one's personal preferences not backed up by site policy or community consensus is disruptive. It would be just as easy for someone to go across 100 articles you care about and only remove the serial commas—wouldn't that annoy you deeply? So we opt for consistency within articles within reason and that's all.
Since you're still unsure generally, Serial comma actually has a nice section detailing various positions for, against, and agnostic. To clarify, though it's unimportant I generally prefer using it myself where it doesn't make the prose more ambiguous (which it can do!)—I used to have a very strong preference for it before I started editing and realized it's not material most of the time and there are other details more worth arguing about.   Enough of the meme crap and misuse of edit summaries; edit summaries are for describing your edit, not your personal musings. OhNoitsJamie Talk 11:26, 6 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I wouldn't consider that "misuse of edit summaries" since I had a legit reason for mentioning the meme. My guess is that you did not read the full edit summary. BombCraft8 (talk) (contributions) 11:27, 7 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

National varieties of English

edit

Hello. In a recent edit to the page 1st meridian east, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, or Pakistan, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the first author of the article used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. And on all of the other articles. "Co-ordinate" is not a typo, it's British spelling. Stop changing the spelling. Meters (talk) 21:39, 9 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I've almost never heard it spelled with the hyphen, but now I know lol BombCraft8 (talk) (contributions) 23:52, 9 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
