This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Maryn mckenna, and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://marynmckenna.com/bio/.
It is possible that the bot was mistaken and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.
If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. You may use such publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.) CorenSearchBot (talk) 16:36, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Maryn mckenna
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Maryn mckenna requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://marynmckenna.com/bio/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Revising Maryn McKenna article
editThanks for your note today. I'm glad that I could help with the Maryn McKenna article.
I have looked at the Maryn McKenna Draft. You are on the right track with the additional information included in it. With regard to your comment, "Perhaps you can use some of the info from the draft to put on the page," those additions to the existing article would be better done by you than by me. I say that for two reasons:
- 1) You know which information came from which source; I don't.
- 2) If you want to continue to write and edit on Wikipedia, you need to get used to doing so in Wikipedia style. That will result in more satisfaction and less frustration. (I say that from first-hand knowledge. I struggled with conforming to what was expected on WP and at one point quit writing and editing for awhile. Then I settled in, and now I enjoy it.)
I see that you have four references for the draft. They appear to be reliable, according to WP guidelines. Blogs are normally not considered appropriate, but I think that one with the National Geographic name probably would be an exception.
Having said that, I will point out two changes that you need to make with your use of references:
- 1) References should be in-line, rather than at the end of the text. For example, the University of Florida reference should appear in the text at the end of the material that came from it. If you do that in the Edit window, then the page will display the number 1 at that spot. Do the same for all references. Wikipedia's software will automatically supply numbers starting at the top of the page -- 1 for the first reference, 2 for the second, etc.
- 2) References should be formatted according to WP style. The best way to do that is to use templates for citations. When you are in the Edit window, do you see at the upper left a box with "Templates" in it? If not, click on "Cite" at the top; then "Templates" should appear at the upper left. When you click on "Templates," you'll see four options: Cite Web, Cite News, Cite Book, Cite Journal. All of the references you have in the draft would use Cite Web. You should at least fill the URL, Title, and Website Name boxes and click the Access Date icon to show the current date. That will format your references appropriately. The other templates are used similarly, but I won't go into them now, since your current references in the draft are all from websites.
Take a look at the material I added to the published McKenna article. You'll see how references look when the templates are used.
I realize that I have gone over a lot of material here. I hope it will be useful to you. Some things I learned via tips from others on WP; other things I have learned from trial and error. If you have questions, please let me know. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:21, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:MarynMcKennaDraft
editHello, BookPortal. It has been over six months since you last edited your Articles for Creation draft article submission, "MarynMcKennaDraft".

Taking it to the next level...
editAre you really smart?
Are you bored?
Would you like to learn a programming language?
Wikipedia is a great place to learn JavaScript.
How?
You can practice writing user scripts and/or gadgets for Wikipedia.
JavaScript is used to enhance Wikipedia in many ways.
You don't have to download the language, because it is already built-in to your browser and into Wikipedia.
All .js pages in your user space are treated as JavaScript programs. Your common.js page, and your skin-named pages (vector.js, monobook.js, etc.) are live JavaScript programs executed for every page you visit while you are logged on (in the skin you have activated on your account). Those pages could include JavaScript programs, but it is more efficient to import other programs from within those pages.
(Vector is the default skin of Wikipedia).
You can look at other users' common.js and vector.js pages to see how to import programs.
And there are plenty of JavaScript programs listed at Wikipedia:User scripts/List. Those are source code, that you can install. But you can also copy and modify them to do something else.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Some pages to take a look at to get started, are:
Judging from your user page, I think you would make some very interesting and creative user scripts.
But I wasn't sure you knew about JavaScript (the next level up in user know-how), and so...
Now you do.
Have fun. The Transhumanist (talk) 22:48, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
Managing a conflict of interest
editHello, BookPortal. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Maryn McKenna, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Chris Troutman (talk) 14:41, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
- I wrote the article first and then got in contact with Maryn McKenna to ask for permission to use a photo. She agreed but I now no longer use X formerly known as twitter. So I have no affiliation outside of that. Book Portal & Talk 16:52, 17 March 2016 (UTC) 09:05, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Custom signature fix needed
editHi there! You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. Changes to Wikipedia's software have made your current custom signature invalid.
The problem: Your signature contains a syntax error or obsolete HTML tags.
The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, you can fix your signature, or you can do nothing.
Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
- Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
- Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
- Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
- Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (Do not click the red "Restore all default settings" button, which will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
- Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
- Click the button next to the error to learn how to fix the error.
- Update your signature to fix the error.
- Click Save to update to your newly fixed signature.
Solution 3: Do nothing:
- In accordance with a recent request for comment, all invalid signatures will be changed to the default, which looks like "Example (talk)", one month from now.
If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures. Thank you! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 06:05, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
