Green papaya salad

edit

I undid your edit to Green papaya salad as your source: ["อาหารลาว – ประวัติ ส้มตำหมากหุ่ง". foodlaos.wordpress.com (in Thai). 9 September 2017. Retrieved 23 February 2024.] appears to be wp:self-published blog which is unlikely to be under editorial review. Anybody can write a blog and claim to be an expert. If the writer is a recognized expert in this field, there might be an exception. This does take discussion. See wp:RSN. An example of a blog being accepted as RS (to some degree which I am familiar with) see the discussions linked on the third column in the Quackwatch entry. Cheers Adakiko (talk) 20:03, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I replace the reference you previously deleted ("อาหารลาว – ประวัติ ส้มตำหมากหุ่ง") with reference 32 ("สืบที่มา "ส้มตำ" เข้ากรุงเทพฯ เมื่อไหร่-คนกรุงสมัยก่อนกินส้มตำที่ไหน) that had been also twice in the paragraph that follows. Hope this is suitable. Cheers Bounthy (talk) 15:46, 24 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello

edit

Hello Bounthy,

Thank you for your sources and contribution to Wikipedia. Just a tittle tip: when writing/editing articles please write it out in a MS Word doc first before posting to Wikipedia. MS Word can help eliminate a lot of your spelling/typos. I struggle a lot too because of ESL, but yours is really bad (no offense). I do find your sources interesting, and not written about before, which is why I try to help (as best as I can) to capture what you're trying to convey, and I sometime will even expand on your sources. But I am a newbie here and most of the time I don't even know what I am doing.

Thank you, Isan1985 (talk) 12:35, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Isan 1985 for your excellent advice. Bounthy (talk) 17:40, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Bounthy, do you know anything about Katay D. Sasorith? I've been looking for his books. He wrote two memoirs called "Souvenirs d'un ancien écolier de Paksé" and "Elle est formidable, la belle-mère", in 1958, both recounting his childhood while attending French elementary school in Pakse...
"Il raffolait du tam mak sôm ( salade de fruits et de légumes pilés et fortement pimentés ) , malgré que cela provoquât assez souvent chez lui de graves diarrhées . Son père s'en prit toujours à nous . Des fois , sur les conseils de ma"
Anyway, hoping you can assist. Thanks Isan1985 (talk) 02:04, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
A colleague that I have contacted told me that he had heard of Katay's books (including Souvenirs d'un ancient ecolier de Pakse). I found the references for both books that are on sell in the web. Do you know which one mentioned tam mak som? Bounthy (talk) 22:47, 7 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi, both books mentioned tam mak sôm. The quote I showed previously was from Souvenirs d'un ancien écolier de Paksé. And in Elle est formidable, la belle-mère you have: "Pardon , Monsieur , lui dit - elle avec toute sa naïveté d'enfant , Chanh - la - vérolée m'envoie vous demander l'argent que vous lui devez pour un plat de tam mak sôm ( 1 ) qu'elle vous a servi la nuit dernière". Katay wrote about his childhood, as a student, while attending french elementary school in Pakse, in these two books. Unfortunately, I cant view more of these two books on google nor find more information but I think these books has the date as to when he attended the french school possibly around 1910-1920s. If you can look into it that would be great. Isan1985 (talk) 01:55, 11 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
I got the two books both with a publication date of 1958 from a library.
In “Souvenir d’un ancient ecolier de Pakse”:
Title: Souvenirs dun ancien ecolien de Pakse
Creator/Contributor: Sasorith, Katay D.
Publisher: [Saigon]: Editions Lao Sedone, 1958.
First French primary (elementary) school was opended in March 1909 in Pakse (page 11).
Katay and his brothers were enrolled in this school when he was not yet 5 years old (page 11).
He and his family knew several French people during the colonization period (his father had a bis-tro with French customers), including a French couple who had a son named Louis of about Katay’s own age (8-9 years old at the time) who became a close friend with the Sasorith family.
Louis adored tam mak som (page 31).
A papaya tree was also mentioned (page 34).
He obtained a certificate of primary education at a 13 and a half-years old boy (1917?) (page 78)
Overall, in my opinion, the mention of Tam mak som would occur around the time Louis befriend-ed and occasionally ate with the Katay family, i.e during the mid-1910s (1910-1920)
In the book “Elle est formidable la belle-mere”,
Title: Elle est formidable, la belle-niere!
Creator/Contributor: Sasorith, Katay D.
Publisher: [Saigon]: Editions Lao Sedone, 1958.
Tam mak som was mentioned on page 103.
I cannot tell which year, but more likely when he was already an adult. Bounthy (talk) 17:02, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Bounthy,
Can you find this book? Isan1985 (talk) 18:41, 27 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Self-published sources are not considered reliable

edit

Please see wp:reliable sources (RS) and wp:verifiability (WP:V). wp:self-published sources (such as blogs, personal websites, etc.) and wp:user-generated content (such as twitter, chat rooms, forums) are not considered RS. Google drive content is generally a self-published source. I recommend you find sources that fit RS & WP:V Cheers Adakiko (talk) 22:58, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the delay. I heard about a former Lao nationalist Katay. Was his family name Sasorith or Dosasorith? It was such a long time ago. As for his book, I will try to look into it because I have never heard about him writing a book.
By the way, have you had any chance to look through the Tasteatlas.com world food web? I looked at what they summarized about Larb and Som Tam. For Larb, it says "Considered the unofficial dish of Laos, larb was first invented in the Chinese province of Yunnan, but became deeply rooted in Lao cuisine, consumed both in Laos and the bordering Isan, a region in Thailand”. I politely wrote back to them asking for any verifiable source they might have because it kind of discredits the Lao people. I showed them what the Europeans Aymonier and Estrade about Larb in late 1800s. They told me they indeed did not have any verifiable data and promised me they will correct their summary. Last time I checked they have not yet corrected it. Bounthy (talk) 16:51, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
