Odd backlog additions...

Hi Brian, just looking at and hoping to help out with the PR backlog, but noticed a couple of odd things. Firstly I see the PRbot closing stuff without reviews, which I've undone when I see it, but secondly and more bizarrely, I've found a couple of PRs from way back that are listed, e.g. Wikipedia:Peer review/Dylan and Cole Sprouse/archive1 which was listed on 13 May 2006 (apparently!) and Wikipedia:Peer review/Lewisville, Texas/archive1 which was closed in November last year... Do you know what's happening here?! I just don't want to spend time on dead PRs when plenty of live ones need attention! Cheers, The Rambling Man (talk) 18:13, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

My mistake in both cases - I had entered the wrong archive numbers, so the links went to earlier reviews . I have corrected the Lewisville link. The Dylan & Cole Sprouse article has just been reviewed, so I have removed that from the backlog. My apologies for the confusion. And many thanks to you for taking up the backlog challenge again. I am trying to do 3 or 4 every week bur there are so many distarctions...! Brianboulton (talk) 18:34, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
No problem at all. By all means (and I've mentioned this to Ruhrfisch in the past) ping me if the backlog gets too high (e.g. above 20 or so), I'm happy to help when I can. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:21, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Sheriff Hill Peer Review

Hi Brian

Thanks for PR-ing the Sheriff Hill article which I have worked heavily on over a number of years(!). The PR was a while ago but I only really get the holidays off work to make WP contributions, so my response has taken a while. I'd like to get this at least looked at for FA this summer, so if you could spare some time to look at this again, I'd be grateful. Thanks! Meetthefeebles (talk) 10:25, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

The Rite of Spring

Delighted to join you in working on this. I have harvested a few articles which I shall shortly be sending you by email for your delectation when you're ready. I am pleased to see that Carmen has been promoted. Drinks all round at Lily's Pasties Bar. Tim riley (talk) 10:41, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Good! I will shortly open a workpage for the collection of Rite sources, links, images etc. As to Carmen, I think some sort of FAC record was established when it went through in a total of just 68 hours and 14 minutes between nomination and promotion. That's uncommonly fast for these days; I hope nothing important got missed. Brianboulton (talk) 17:40, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
Manzanilla to you, let's dance seguidilla!! As for record: do you know a faster GA than five hours from nom to passing? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:47, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

The Archangel Gabriel

Having put Fauré up for a second peer review I am promptly legging it to the rural fastness of the Lake District until 12 April, with little access to the internet. If, despite this dereliction, you could find time and disposition to look at the much-expanded article and add such comments as occur to you, it would be esteemed a favour. – Tim riley (talk) 15:19, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Enjoy your break. I'll try to have my comments awaiting you on your return. Brianboulton (talk) 17:50, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for Peer Review tip

Thanks for reminding me about the 14-day rule for Peer Reviews at Wikipedia:Peer review/Smith Act trials of Communist Party leaders/archive2. I'd like to take you up on your offer to do a review at the article's Talk page. The topic of the article seems to provoke strong responses in editors, so I'd like to make sure it is well vetted before going to FAC. I know you are a very thorough and detail-oriented editor, so any input from you would be very much appreciated. --Noleander (talk) 00:14, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I'll do it, but it will be a few days. Brianboulton (talk) 10:26, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Rosenberg

Hello, we've done some work on Elias Abraham Rosenberg‎ over the last few days, and I think we have resolved the issues that you pointed out at the FAC. If you have time, it would be great if you could revisit it. Thanks, Mark Arsten (talk) 01:01, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick reply there, you certainly got my attention with that oppose! Mark Arsten (talk) 14:05, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Chrisye

Hi Brian, just a friendly note that I've replied at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Chrisye/archive1. I posted this above as well, but it seems to have been buried by other threads. Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:31, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I missed your earlier prompt (when this page is busy it's maybe best to open a new thread to get my attention). I will check out the article shortly (can't remember offhand what my concerns were). Brianboulton (talk) 10:40, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Carmen discography, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Max Rudolf (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I think you mean FAC; FAR is where the bad boys go. I'll bear it in mind, but can't promise to get there quickly. Brianboulton (talk) 09:08, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Oops, pardon the mistake :) Changed the section header accordingly. Oh well, thanks anyways. Would you mind giving your general notion of the article, at a single glance? Any obvious places of improvement can be cleaned-up in the meanwhile. ~*~AnkitBhatt~*~ 10:44, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Chrisye

I was interested in your comment at Chrisye's FAC. I've been through that article so many times it's untrue, but it still doesn't read idiomatically to me. Hopefully Ruhrfisch's comments (and your copyedits) will be enough to tip it over the line. Malleus Fatuorum 23:15, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm going to read through on Friday for the final time. I looks as if Ruhrfisch wants to do the same. I think we can see it through; after all the efforts of main editors, reviewers and copyeditors, and six weeks on the page, it will be a crying shame if it still falls short. (God, I see you are now the principal editor!!!) Time for bed now... Brianboulton (talk) 23:39, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
That often seems to happen, but it's only because I keep going back and reworking what I've already reworked until I feel more comfortable with it. For me it's about how I feel about something: no logic just raw instinct. :-) Malleus Fatuorum 00:18, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Dead link in article 'Clements Markham'

Hi. I tried to fix the dead links in 'Clements Markham', but there was one that I couldn't fix. I marked it with {{Dead link}}. Can you help fix the last dead link?

  • You added this in April 2009.

Another Yorkshire cricketer

I'm afraid I'm here to bother you again. I'm hoping to put Hedley Verity at FAC soon and I was wondering if you could take a look? No problem if you are too busy, or the thought of another cricket article makes you want to attack me with a cricket bat! Either way, there will be a delay before I nominate it as I've just discovered a new book which may (or may not) have some good information about him. --Sarastro1 (talk) 17:01, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Well, if England hadn't just beaten Sri Lanka I might have grumped about this, but as it is, well, I'll take a look (though maybe not immediately). Not only was Verity a fine bowler, but he gets a special mention in the King James bible: see Psalms 11, v. 7 (what became of Judgement?) Brianboulton (talk) 17:49, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
    • I'm afraid the book was not much use, and so I've decided to stick it up at FAC a little early as it seems fairly quiet there at the moment. I still hope you can take a look and if I've obviously made a mess of it, please let me know. And as for judgement, he made his mark on English cricket as well, although I suspect it was a different sort of judgement to that intended in psalms! --Sarastro1 (talk) 20:29, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

I have a real CORKER coming up (see Ruhrfisch post below), which you will absolutely LOVE!! No horsey deaths, no opera singers... you can read it in absolute safety. It should be at PR by tomorrow - I'll keep you posted. And of course I'll give Neville the going over. Brianboulton (talk) 08:55, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Sounds good. And go ahead and point me at something in the backlog too. I've got to go run out and deal with some stuff this afternoon, but I'm game for a non-Brian PR from the backlog later tonight or tomorrow morning. (And if any TPSs want to start going over Billy Boy I with a very very very fine-toothed comb before it hits PR after Neville, I'd be eternally greatful... ) Ealdgyth - Talk 20:19, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Tichborne images

Thanks for a fascinating article! I found the photographer for File:RogerTichborne.jpg and assuming he was 20 years old in 1854 and lived to be 100 (died 1934), he has still been dead over 70 years, so the image should be free. Since the website giving the photographer here says that images of those involved in the case were published and sold widely and this seems to be one of the very few photos of Roger Tichborne, I think it is safe to assume it was published before 1923 too.

As for File:Thomas Castro's butcher shop sketch.jpg it appears to me to be either an engraving or a woodcut and so is a work of art and was certainly published. it even has a signature of some sort in the lower left corner, perhaps "W H J Boot"? More information on the Tichborne memento industry is given at this website, including plaster figurines!

So yes, I think both are free. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:18, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks very much. I'll be sending it to PR shortly, but I hope to chip at the backlog a bit before I do. Brianboulton (talk) 08:57, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
I found an earlier publication of the first image here and added that information to the file here. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 11:51, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
PS You may want to include this image in the article [1] - comparing the two men photgraphically. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 12:47, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks again. This is very interesting, but slightly troubling (there was something similar in the article before I expanded). The problem is that (as is clear from the caption to the tryptich) these blended photographs were prepared with an agenda in mind; the issue is far from being as clear-cut as the caption makes out. Also, the set-up is not entirely clear; the left side is Roger and the right side is the Claimant. Presumably the centre is a blend of the two? Some textual commentary might be helpful. Anyway, I'll upload the image and see how it looks. Brianboulton (talk) 15:48, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
I've positioned it, and kept Roger lower down. Can you tell me if you think this will work? Brianboulton (talk) 16:26, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
I think it works - I tried adding the dates of the photos of Roger and the Claimant in the caption for clarity. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:27, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Brian, thanks for the review at the recent FA nomination for Chrisye. Your prose edits helped tremendously, and the peer review you gave led me to further research this article. William Jennings Bryan presidential campaign, 1896

Is there some chance you could do the GA review on this, but to FA standards with your usual keen eye? As feel I should patronise TTT's Four Award setup, it would save some bother of running it through GA and PR successively. As we've all heard the story of the '96 campaign enough, I intend to lay McKinley aside for a time (not permanently) and deal with other matters. Hoping that the Wagga Wagga man article is going well!--Wehwalt (talk) 09:48, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

  • I've not done a GA review for years, and don't know what the expected standard is (fairly low, considering some of the rubbish that arrives at PR proudly bearing its rosette). But I appreciate that it's the review not the trinket you are after, so I'll do it like a PR with FAC in mind. You may have to remind me of some of the GA mechanics. As to the Claimant, he should be at PR by the end of the day; I'll drop you a note when it's ready. Brianboulton (talk) 10:07, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
Alright. I'll try to get it done quickly due to travel. I also owe Tim one. Thanks. I added some material this morning but it should be fairly stable now. I'd appreciate comments on structure and emphasis if you see problems. Trying to do justice to the Cross of Gold speech without stealing the fire from its own article was a difficult proposition.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:43, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

I think your online ref for the end of the title may be challenged as to its being a reliable source. I offer you this from The Times to keep up your sleeve: "Sir Anthony Doughty–Tichborne, the fourteenth baronet and last died on Thursday. He was the only son of the thirteenth baronet whom he succeeded in 1930 and there is no heir to the title": Ref: "Sir A. Doughty-Tichborne", The Times, 20 July 1968, p. 10. Tim riley (talk) 19:15, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
I agree about the dodgy website; it was there as a holding operation pending further investigation, there being nothing in Debrett. I would not have taken that to FAC. You have again turned up trumps with a useable ref and I am again most grateful. Brianboulton (talk) 20:29, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Ferrier disco

I changed bits and links on the discography, for her day! I didn't want to go further but have some more questions.

  • Bach cantatas: the details of her recordings are on bach-cantatas, 11, 67, in case it's useful. 22 is not yet mentioned. BWV 11 is not a cantata but the Ascension Oratorio. The titles were probably given in English then, whereas they are now in German worldwide. The translation of BWV 67 is strange, affection instead of remembrance (Gedächtnis). It might be added that performance and recording of Bach cantatas in the 1940s was rare.
  • The linking of the same personnel is not consistent, some are linked only first appearance, some each time.
  • Famous symphonies (Beethoven, Mahler) usually come without key, but if with, it should be consistent.
  • Four Serious Songs (cap!), Vier ernste Gesänge, those I would link each time, to show it's the same music, once in English, once in German. Sometime it's with Op, sometimes without.
  • Alto Rhapsody: I linked one, in brackets, but there are more.
  • Bist du bei mir is not by Bach - but it was not known then.
  • Frauenliebe und - leben: the following entries are simply its parts, that doesn't show.

Find some late Easter eggs on my user, and peace (in BWV 67 which she recorded) ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:57, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Main page appearance: Kathleen Ferrier

This is a note to let the main editors of Kathleen Ferrier know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on April 22, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 22, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Kathleen Ferrier (1912–1953) was an English contralto who achieved an international reputation as a stage, concert and recording artist. Her early death from cancer, at the height of her fame, was a considerable shock to the music world. Ferrier began singing professionally in 1937, after winning a singing competition. During the Second World War she performed regularly with the Council for the Encouragement of the Arts (CEMA); her career developed considerably after the conductor Malcolm Sargent recommended her to the influential Ibbs and Tillett concert management agency. In 1946 she made her stage debut as Lucretia in the Glyndebourne Festival premiere of Benjamin Britten's opera The Rape of Lucretia. A year later she sang Orfeo in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice; these were her only two operatic roles. As a recitalist she became known internationally through her three tours of the United States and her many visits to continental Europe. She continued to perform and record after being diagnosed with breast cancer in March 1951. Her final public appearance was as Orfeo, at the Royal Opera House in February 1953; she died in October that year. Among her many memorials, the Kathleen Ferrier Cancer Research Fund was launched in May 1954; the Kathleen Ferrier Scholarship Fund, administered by the Royal Philharmonic Society, makes annual awards to aspiring young professional singers. Seconded. I'll be sending positive thoughts your way. --Laser brain (talk) 17:54, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Sorry to hear this, best wishes and hopefully a quick recovery. Mark Arsten (talk) 03:17, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Best wishes from me, too, Brian, and wishing you a speedy recovery. SlimVirgin (talk) 03:22, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Yes, positive thoughts (and prayers, can I say that on Wikipedia?) coming your way from me too. Ling.Nut3 (talk) 04:22, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Yes, prayers also, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:13, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

The same here. Come back refreshed and recharged, and with that experience completely behind you..--Wehwalt (talk) 04:41, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
Wishing you well. Finetooth (talk) 17:57, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
  • To all the above: many thanks for your kindness and good wishes. I am a little sore, but otherwise in good spirits. There will be further treatment ... but never mind that, I'm raring to go and will get in some serious online work this evening. It's good to be back. Brianboulton (talk) 12:59, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Updates

I have taken over updating the peer review backlog and will do so until you let me know you want to take it back (no hurry). I also asked that the lead Tichborne case image be cleaned up at Wikipedia:Graphic_Lab/Photography_workshop#Tichborne_case. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:06, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for picking up the backlog chore. I'll be happy to resume this from tomorrow (Sunday). No sign of the Tichborne image cleanup yet. Brianboulton (talk) 12:59, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Later: I've just seen the final comments on the review page. I think the commenters are right - it's not moire, it's the grids created to compare facial features among the images. This can I think be left. Brianboulton (talk) 13:29, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Agreed on the images. I have linked the peer review properly and supported at the FAC - great to have you back and please let me know if I can be of assistance. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:55, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Ezra Pound

Hi Brian, I'm sorry to see the message at the top of your page and hope that all is as well as can be expected. Actually I was stopping by to tell you that I'll be out for an unspecified period, so the Ezra Pound review doesn't have to be done. We can let the PR archive; I'll resubmit it in a few months. Thanks and best to you. Truthkeeper (talk) 14:47, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind message. I'm OK: just let me know when you bring Pound back. Brianboulton (talk) 12:59, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Glad to hear you're okay. I'll be almost completely gone during most of May, with the exception of perhaps some light editing, but won't have any time for a big project. At the moment, I'm hoping to make a push on this on June. I can either reopen the PR, or the comments can be added to the user page - whichever is easiest for you. Truthkeeper (talk) 02:37, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Locum and Tichborne

No, there were no well-meant horrors in the Ferrier article to deal with te absente, and, as you say, the ill-meant ones were seen off good and proper by vigilant Wiki-colleagues. I have just had great pleasure in adding my two penn'orth to the FAC page for the Tichborne claimant. It is so good to have you back in circulation! Best imaginable wishes. Tim riley (talk) 21:56, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Lukather

Nice to see you back in the saddle. In case you're interested, Steve Lukather is at FAC. --Laser brain (talk) 18:32, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Initials

Hmm. Shall rummage and report back, but I don't find the initials immediately familiar. Tim riley (talk) 18:48, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Edwin Evans is not a familiar name, but I ought to have thought of Eric Blom. I wholly agree with your reasoning and reckon it's perfectly legit to reach the conclusions you have reached. Tim riley (talk) 09:19, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
I now see that Evans and Blom are both confirmed as the writers in question, in the depths of Gloag's unspeakable book, so it's 100% sure. Brianboulton (talk) 15:06, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
