Francoist Spain and the Holocaust

Inspired by your excellent article on Turkey, I've destubbed the article Francoist Spain and the Holocaust. If you get the chance to give it a look over at some point, I'd be grateful! I am certainly not an expert on the subject. —Brigade Piron (talk) 22:00, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks! If you have a minute, could you also add a brief summary to International response to the Holocaust#Turkey? —Brigade Piron (talk) 11:31, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
Brigade Piron Sure, I'll do that. Your input may be helpful on Talk:Turkey and the Holocaust where another editor is arguing for the inclusion of Stanford Shaw (basically a work of fiction) and arguing that Varlık Vergisi is not an anti-Jewish law. (t · c) buidhe 12:13, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm tempted to have a go at an article on Sweden and the Holocaust too. Ideally it'd be great to have a series of similar articles dealing with Switzerland, Portugal, and Japan which I know have been covered at some length in the scholarly literature. We are still missing an article on The Holocaust in the Netherlands (currently a redirect) but that's a rather more demanding subject than I can manage. —Brigade Piron (talk) 16:40, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
Apparently there is an entire book called "Early Holocaust Memory in Sweden"[1]... Good luck! (t · c) buidhe 16:42, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Jens-Christian Wagner

On 16 January 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Jens-Christian Wagner, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that memorial director Jens-Christian Wagner blames Alternative for Germany for the increase in heckling at former Nazi concentration camps in recent years? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Jens-Christian Wagner. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Jens-Christian Wagner), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Editing hooks

I thought it was proper to edit hooks. And the one in question did call out for those inlines.

User:Casliber - since I see you above - am I wrong? Ty.

--2603:7000:2143:8500:8C2A:84CA:D15B:3FEC (talk) 09:11, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

  • I believe the featured article is bolded. Beyond that, I believe it is our goal to aid the reader. With normal wp inlining. That trumps trying to drive up the click number, to hit some magic number.
Your second link btw was better than mine, of course.
And I am still asking if there is a rule against editing hooks. I thought not. And that there was not "ownership". But perhaps Casliber knows. Ty. 2603:7000:2143:8500:8C2A:84CA:D15B:3FEC (talk) 09:17, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
There has been discussion on this in the past. Years ago I'd have had the three links in the hook, but more recently people have felt more srtongly about fewer links. I never had a strong enough opinion to push the point. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 11:45, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Microsoft Store (disambiguation)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Microsoft Store (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Minnesota History

Want to say: your welcome. I think I have very nearly completed the damage I going to inflict on Wikipedia. Along the way most all the comments I have run into have been either smart, snide, or both, so yours was a surprise. I happen to know a little Minnesota military history so it was easy. Fort Snelling, Fort Ridgely, Fort Ripley, and St. Paul were the other Minnesota efforts. Thank you again.Mcb133aco (talk) 03:28, 23 January 2021 (UTC)mcb133acoMcb133aco (talk) 03:28, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

I would guess that you are a member of the Minnesota project while I am not. I will give this to you to share as you see fit. In editing Fort Snelling I came across the word Bdote. It is being used in place of Mendota. I used the word M'dota and that did not go well. After a great deal of reading I can not find that word or spelling in the historical record until after 2005. I have gone to the Native American Dept. @ U of M, reached out to the Shakopee Mdewakanton, Mendota Mdewakanton, Lower Sioux @ Morton and the MHS about the use on Bdote in place of Mendota and none have replied. The online Dakota Dictionary lists Mendota as a "secondary" spelling of B'dote. John March the first school teacher at the Fort in 1820s made a Dakota Dictionary as did the Pond brothers in the 1830s. No one is citing their work for the word. The MHS started adding the word to their signage at the Fort Snelling Park in 2017 I believe and now do not use the word Mendota. I specifically asked the MHS when the word Bdote is first found in the historical record. No reply. The use of the word Bdote should have at least a qualifier explaining its use in the Fort Snelling article. MHS has now published several works with the word in the title. Without previous publication I think the MHS fits the description of a self publisher by Wikipedia standards. The MHS has a mandate to preserve history not be an revisionist or activist repository. Another editor informed me that Dakota is a "living" Language. That may be true, history is history and Mendota is in the record Bdote is not until the MHS added it.Mcb133aco (talk) 22:31, 23 January 2021 (UTC)mcb133acoMcb133aco (talk) 22:31, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

  • Mcb133aco, I'm actually from Seattle and have only been to Minnesota once, and I'm not involved in the wikiproject. I noticed your work because I keep an eye on featured article reviews.
  • As for names, there are alternate dialects, spellings, and orthographies for many Native American languages, and it's quite possible that the same Dakota word could be spelled B'dote or M'dota depending on the dialect or orthography used. I checked MHS (I assume you mean Minnesota Historical Society?) and it's definitely a legitimate institution, not a self-published source like a personal blog. I would say they are reliable for this type of information. (t · c) buidhe 22:52, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:League of Legends lore

Hello, Buidhe. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "League of Legends lore".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! UnitedStatesian (talk) 23:40, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Why are you deleting images in commons???

I'm talking about the Holocaust in Libya. You already caused one image to be removed and nominated another one for deletion. At least are you planning to replace them or what? It's not an improvement of the article, you know.--Watchlonly (talk) 23:51, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Watchlonly, Avoiding copyvio is important. In order to use an image we have to show that it is available under a free license. If that cannot be shown, images should be removed. (t · c) buidhe 23:58, 23 January 2021 (UTC)
Those images are from Yad Vashem for the public. Also they were taken in the 40s! (which means they are under free licence anyway, since more than 70 years have passed since the pictures were taken).--Watchlonly (talk) 00:12, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
Watchlonly, That's not how it works. In most European countries it is 70 years since the photographer died, or if the photographer is unknown 70 years since *publication* (rather than creation). The origin country for these photographs is certainly not Israel so Israeli copyright law is irrelevant. (t · c) buidhe 00:18, 24 January 2021 (UTC)

Please open the discussion back up. You made a page move and another edit at 02:47, then closed the Cary Grant infobox discussion without an explanation, which editors have discussed at length in this discussion and for years beforehand, at 02:49. I take your work as good faith but the two-minute close and write-up seems enough reason to reopen and let a long-time admin take adequate time to analyze the discussion and the issue. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 04:45, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Randy Kryn, The consensus is pretty clear, so I don't see the value in typing out an elaborate rationale. Most editors in the discussion see value in an infobox. The discussion was allowed to run more than the minimum seven days, and the opposers were unable to convince enough other editors of their point. (t · c) buidhe 05:26, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Sources on ASALA topic

I urge you to review my sources below before making assumptions:

United States Department of State. Patterns of Global Terrorism Report: 1989, p 57

EU and Member States' policies and laws on persons suspected of terrorism-related crimes" (PDF). EU Parliament Directorate General for Internal Policies of the Union. December 2017.

The Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia: A Continuing International Threat" (PDF). CIA Archives.

CIA Terrorism Review 1983" (PDF).

Australia: New progress in Turkish officials' martyrdom". Retrieved 6 January 2021.

The militant organization is referred to as a "terrorist organization" in some instances. United States Department of State classified ASALA militant group as a terrorist organization in their 1989 report archived by National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism. ASALA militant group is described as a "Marxist-Leninist Armenian terrorist group formed in 1975."

European Union Parliament referred to ASALA militant organization as a secular terrorist group active in Belgium during 70s and 80s.

CIA referred to ASALA militant members as terrorists and ASALA militant organization as a continuing International Threat in January of 1984. Terrorism Analysis Branch of CIA wrote the following sentences in their report on January 1984: "ASALA poses a growing threat to a number of US policy interests.", "... several West European nations have apparently reached accommodations with ASALA, allowing the terrorists freedom to pursue Turkish targets in exchange for promises not to attack indigenous citizens.", "The Turks have responded angrily against what they see as European indifference to or connivance with ASALA terrorism" quoted from the unclassified CIA documents.

ASALA militants are also mentioned in CIA's Terrorism Review report. The following quote is mentioned in Armenian Terrorism section of 29 September 1983 dated Terrorism Review of CIA: "Armenian terrorists pose a growing international threat."

ASALA's last attack, on 19 December 1991, targeted the bullet-proof limousine carrying the Turkish Ambassador to Budapest. The ambassador was not injured in the attack, which was claimed by ASALA in Paris. Since this attack, the militant organization is considered not active thus USA or UK do not include ASALA in their list of foreign terrorist organizations anymore.

The majority of the investigations in the Western countries where the attacks took place were inconclusive and the cases remained unresolved. Australian government told the media that they reopened their investigation into the 1980 assassination of two Turkish diplomats made by ASALA. 1 million Australian Dollar reward is offered by the Australian government for the capture of the perpetrators of the assassination on the occasion of 39th anniversary of the 1980 assassinations.

Therefore it can be seen that there are reliable and enough sources regarding western countries opposing militant group ASALA. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yukon198 (talkcontribs) 13:48, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Yukon198, None of these sources say that ASALA considered EU, US etc. an enemy, or was waging a campaign against them. It is WP:OR to conflate terrorist listing with being an enemy. The infobox for Provisional Irish Republican Army only includes the organizations that the IRA fought against, not all the various countries that declared it a terrorist group. Threshold for killing all Tigrayans: above 4 yrs, 7 yrs or 14 yrs? males only or all genders?

I think that the clearest evidence for intent in the War crimes in the Tigray War may come from testimony regarding the age limit above which to kill all male or all any-gender Tigrayans, but this is just my personal guess. The age limit may be ambiguous, but it sounds very much like an order from above.

You may wish to keep an eye on the article. It seems to me impossible for these to be only classed as war crimes in the long run, but whether they are legally classified as crimes against humanity or genocide will clearly be a long-term question that will depend on how lawyers, evidence and judges in courts handle the issue. Right now there's the "final phase" of the "military" battles going on, per EEPA, and there don't seem to be reports about whether Eritrean extermination of Tigrayan civilians is continuing. Congratulations

Your DYK hook about human rights lawyer Susan Thomson and her five weeks of "re-education" received 8,014 page views (668 per hour) while on the Main Page. It is the one of most viewed hooks during the month of February and has thus earned a place on the February stats list. Keep up the great work! Cbl62 (talk) 17:25, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Removal of Gabrielle Ormand

I have no problem with removing Gabrielle Ormond from the list of French supercentenarians for lack of proper references. What I have a problem with is how the table was left: a gap between entry 70 & 72; not renumbered for her deletion, and without providing a new “100th” entry to make the list complete. Would you please go back and make these fixes. Thank you.TFBCT1 (talk) 20:19, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Sentinel-class cutters

Thank you for your removal of the hull number from the name of the article USCGC Robert Yered. I am working on a proposed list class article about the Sentinel-class cutters and this will make the creation of the list article much easier. I contemplated doing much the same actions that you have completed but was unsure of how to proceed. I hope that you will continue with the rest of the class! Thank you so much! I could use your elegant assistance on USCGC Joseph Napier (WPC-1115), if you wouldn't mind. Somehow it was missed in the edit of redirects. All of the rest of the existing articles have been redirected. Thank you again!!! Cuprum17 (talk) 16:38, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Armenian Genocide denial

Hello:

The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Armenian Genocide denial has been completed.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

There are a couple of issues I found that I'll draw to your attention that I feel need to be fixed:

Germany: Stories about Armenians were censored, although penalties were light. I assume newspapers censored the stories because of some action on the part of the German government?}} Needs clarification.

United States: In 2019, Congress formally recognized the genocide. How? With a resolution? Clarify.

United Kingdom: In 2001, the United Kingdom initially refused to invite Armenian Genocide survivors to an official commemorative event of the first Holocaust Memorial Day, which included survivors of several genocides, but later relented. Why? Elaborate.

In 2005, the Turkish National Assembly demanded an apology for the 1916 publication… From whom?

Best of luck with the FA when you get to it.

Regards,

Unbalanced div's in RM closure

Hi, Buidhe, this edit, which closed the RM discussion at Talk:Feminizing hormone therapy, added a <div> tag at the top, without a closing end-div tag somewhere. The edit summary mentions DiscussionCloser v.1.7.3, and I'm not sure if the problem lies with that script, or how you used it. Can you look into this, and if there's a problem script-side, can you either ping DannyS712 or call their attention to this problem on their Talk page? If it's in usage, can you provide the bottom-template, or whatever it is the script calls for, so there isn't a missing </div>? This may cause unpredictable behavior in subsequent discussions, if left as is. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 20:23, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Peer review peer review

I noticed your edits to Donough MacCarty, 1st Earl of Clancarty so you probably noticed that I did the GA review and award (see Talk:Donough MacCarty, 1st Earl of Clancarty/GA2). That was the first time I have ever done a GAR, so if you have time I would appreciate any advice you may have to offer should I be tempted to do another? Thank you if you do, no worries if you don't. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 16:13, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

  • John Maynard Friedman Thanks for reviewing at GAN! I think your review does a good job at sticking to the criteria while providing helpful feedback for the nominator. For example, articles should not have collapsed tables according to MOS:DONTHIDE, but this is not part of the MOS standard required for GAN (although you could have challenged them based on relevance). Here are the issues that I noticed that ideally would be caught by a GA review:
    • I think you should have checked the notes for original research and verifiability; I found some potential issues there. For example, one of the notes states without a citation: "The source does not name the son, but it can be inferred that it was Callaghan, his second son, as his eldest, Cormac, was away in France and Justin was only about nine years old and probably with his mother in France." I realize you flagged this in the review and had it improved, but it is still WP:OR, as in inference not directly stated in the source. There are other issues such as "His first name is usually spelled Donough", which is not cited and does not seem to be verifiable to a direct statement in a reliable source.
    • The lead refers to "Charles I's authoritarian governor", but the word "authoritarian" is not used in the body and does not seem to be cited anywhere. (Words like "authoritarian" are often not suitable for wikivoice either).
    • Some info in the body lacks citations, such as "Despite this family background, Donough and his siblings grew up to be Catholics. It is not known how this came about." "who could, however, not seize them as its power was limited to Dublin and a few other towns and their immediately surroundings, whereas Muskerry's estates lay entirely within the territories held by the rebels." In an article like this it means that there is no obvious source where the reader can verify the info, which is an issue for GA criteria. (t · c) buidhe 17:03, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
      • Thank you, this is helpful. At least I didn't miss anything gross. I pressed the nominator on the first and (especially) the last point, which has become particularly relevant since it is fundamental to his DYK nomination. Nevertheless I think that, given some 'vigorous' editing, the article has the potential to be a Featured Article. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 17:20, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Drive coordination

Hi buidhe and thanks for volunteering to serve as a coordinator. There's no formal guide as to how to co-ordinate, so I thought I'd drop some notes (that you may already know) about drive coordination:

  1. Before the drive: banners should be dropped at participants in the last drive and prolific reviewers talk pages--here's a link to the banner from last drive. I'd like to include a line asking people to add themselves to this list for future updates so we can send it as a mass message in the future rather than manually going through. If people are already signed up or unable to participate (retired/blocked/etc), use your best judgement and probably don't leave a message.
  2. During the drive: check in on the talk page to answer questions, keep an eye on WT:GAN as well, and (something I didn't do super well last month) if you see new users wanting to get involved maybe drop them a talk page message with advice on how to do a proper review— a drive done right has potential to help people get more involved!
  3. After the drive: check reviews to ensure they are decent reviews (if somebody has done 40+ and is an established user, its acceptable to check every few). here's a table we used to help keep track of it last year

I think that's about it. Hope this is helpful, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out. Cheers, Eddie891 Talk Work 20:14, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

collective guilt

hi buidhe,

firstly, thank you for improving wiki pages about sensitive topics like genocides, massacres, and racism. i do surf on wiki frequently and i'd like to say that reading your contents is always a good experience. nevertheless, i strongly disagree with this addition (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Seyfo&diff=1009744952&oldid=1009675918). it is problematic in many aspects: representing a certain ethnicity as "genocider" as a whole is insensitive and to be honest, it is disturbing. i have never seen such a thing in other pages about genocides. e.g. despite vast majority of the germans voted for the nazis, we do not and should not represent "germans" as the perpetrator of holocoust or genocider, but instead we say "nazis". same goes for nakba (do we call jewish people as the perpetrator?) or we do not represent ethnic turkish people as a whole as the perpetrator of the greek or armenian genocide, but instead we say "ottoman/young turk government". it's because an ethnicity as a whole cannot be "genocidal". collective guilt justifies collective punishment and that's exactly the same mentality causing genocides which is also a form of collective punishment. besides, it is incorrect in many ways because even if we accept that "whole" sunni muslim kurds are genociders (which is not true), there are millions of alevi kurds, yarsani kurds, kurds from kermanshah, sanandaj, kurds from khorasan who had nothing to do with those massacres against christians. on the top of it, most of the allied tribes were not even independent, they were usually (if not always), under the command of others. there's nothing wrong with pointing the massacres of mainly kurdish hamidiye (cavalry) and its role in the genocides during and just before the ww1 (some scholars associate the mostly kurdish and tribal hamidiye cavalry with mostly kurdish and tribal village guard system), but the current wording has serious problems. in my humble opinion, changing it from "kurds" to "allied local muslim tribes" (mainly kurdish but also circassian, yörük turkmen, and arab) will be good. it is just wrong to call an ethnic group "genocider" as a whole.176.54.241.197 (talk) 07:51, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

okay, since i have received no response from you so far and only a few people join the discussions on the article's talk page, i will raise this on dispute resolution boards of wiki in the next couple of weeks.176.54.241.197 (talk) 14:38, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
