Wikipedia and copyright
editHello CMBGAMER 2018! Your additions to Slender Man stabbing have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, it's important to understand and adhere to guidelines about using information from sources to prevent copyright and plagiarism issues. Here are the key points:
- Limited quotation: You may only copy or translate a small portion of a source. Any direct quotations must be enclosed in double quotation marks (") and properly cited using an inline citation. More information is available on the non-free content page. To learn how to cite a source, see Help:Referencing for beginners.
- Paraphrasing: Beyond limited quotations, you are required to put all information in your own words. Following the source's wording too closely can lead to copyright issues and is not permitted; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when paraphrasing, you must still cite your sources as appropriate.
- Image use guidelines: In most scenarios, only freely licensed or public domain images may be used and these should be uploaded to our sister project, Wikimedia Commons. In some scenarios, non-freely copyrighted content can be used if they meet all ten of our non-free content criteria; Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide may help with determining a file's eligibility.
- Copyrighted material donation: If you hold the copyright to the content you want to copy, or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license the text for publication here. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Copying and translation within Wikipedia: Wikipedia articles can be copied or translated, however they must have proper attribution in accordance with Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. For translation, see Help:Translation § License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Persistent failure to comply may result in being blocked from editing. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. asilvering (talk) 23:10, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
The file File:Ryan Wesley Routh's mugshot in February 2010.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Non-free mugshot being used in Ryan Wesley Routh#Life, career, and legal issues which fails WP:NFCC#3a and WP:NFCC#8. There is already one mugshot of Routh being used for primary identification purposes in the main infobox. A second one from a earlier arrest isn't needed simply to show how he looked 14 years earlier. There's also no real contextual reason for a second mugshot per WP:NFC#CS since there's no need for readers to see a mugshot to understand the reliably sourced statement, " On February 10, 2010, he was convicted of possessing stolen goods. For each of these charges he was given probation." and there's no sourced critical commentary specifically about this mugshot (not the arrest but the mugshot itself) anywhere in the article.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:32, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oh alright. I understand. CMBGAMER 2018 (talk) 06:36, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- There are basically three options here and they are as follows.
- If you do nothing or don't care, the file will end up being deleted seven days or so after it was proposed for deletion.
- If you disagree with the assessment given above, you can WP:DEPROD the file; it will then be brought up for discussion at WP:FFD, where you'll have the chance to establish a consensus in favor of keeping it.
- If you understand, accept and aren't disputing why the file was proposed for deletion, you can speed things up a bit by adding the syntax
{{db-author}}
to the file's page and requesting that it be deleted per speedy deletion criterion G7.
- If you have any questions about the above, feel free to ask. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:47, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- how do I delete the file exactly? I'm fine with deleting it CMBGAMER 2018 (talk) 01:48, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- Only Wikipedia administrators can delete pages (e.g. articles, files, talk pages); you can nominate the file for deletion if you want by following Option #3 above, and it will be deleted as soon as an administrator notices your request. You could also do nothing as explained in Option #1 above, and the file will most likely end up deleted in about a week if nobody argues that it shouldn't. Whichever of those two options you choose it up to you and the result it likely going to be the same; Option #3 just pretty much guarantees the file will be deleted most likely later today or sometime tomorrow at the latest. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:11, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- alright. Hopefully I did it correctly CMBGAMER 2018 (talk) 02:21, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
- You added the wrong template, but that's OK since it's easy to fix. I can do it for you, but you'll probably learn more if you do it yourself. Here's what to do. Go to the file's page and click on the "View history" tab at the top. In the history page that opens up, you'll see a record of all the edits made to the page, and the edit you made should be at the very top. Click on "undo" and a new page will appear. Leave a edit summary, click on "Show preview" to check your work, and then click on "Publish changes". That's what known as a WP:SELFREVERT and will remove the template you added. In order to add the correct template, click on "Edit" at the top of the file's page and add the syntax
{{db-author}}
to the very top of the page that opens up. Once you've done that, add an edit summary, click on "Show preview" and then click on "Publish changes". If after reading the above, you're still not sure what to do, then I can do it for you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:37, 6 November 2024 (UTC)- The file's been deleted so everything worked out in the end. If you're planning on uploading files and aren't sure whether it would be OK to do so, you can always ask for feedback at WP:MCQ, WP:HD or WP:THQ. Someone should be able to help you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:54, 6 November 2024 (UTC)

editWelcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions, but in one of your recent edits to Talk:Historical rankings of presidents of the United States, it appears that you have added original research, which is against Wikipedia's policies. Original research refers to material—such as facts, allegations, ideas, and personal experiences—for which no reliable, published sources exist; it also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. Please also see our neutrality policy.
