Canis Pugnax
Hello Canis Pugnax. Unfortunately I had to delete the article. And I'd like to explain. We take copyright violations very seriously on Wikipedia so we can't allow clear cpopyvios to remain. The reason it is a clear copyright violation is that on the external website it says "Copyright (c) 2007 Cole Maxwell, All Rights Reserved..."
If you are Cole Maxwell, and you want the material to be useable here, you need to release it into the public domain or under a free license. I saw that in the article you had written a form of GFDL release statement. That's great but it isn't sufficient. What you would need to do is remove the copyright statement from the external site, and replace it with: "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later." Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:02, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again. Got got your email. First, the way to post to this page is simply to click "edit this page" at the top, or click the edit button next to the section header above and type away. Alternatively, you can reach my talk page by clicking on my name at the end of this post, which takes you to my user page, and then clicking on the "discussion" tab at the top. That is a very good way to contact another user because just as you received an orange bar saying "you have new messages" from this post, when you post to my talk page, I am alerted to your post in the same fashion. Okay, back to the article issue. This is what you need to do:
- GO TO YOUR WEBSITE (not here), and remove the copyright notice which says "Copyright (c) 2007 Cole Maxwell, All Rights Reserved..." Replace that with "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later." Once you do that, posting the material here is no longer a copyright violation.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:20, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- (Replying from my talk):
- Hi again Canis. When you last posted the article, it quite clearly had sentences lifted directly from the website. That is a copyright violation and the reason for its deletion. However, subjects on Wikipedia must be on notable subjects and they must be verified. Both of these polices require citation to sources; the first shows that the world has taken note of the subject by publishing information about it in reliable sources, and the second makes sure that not just the subject, but the information about the subject, already exists in published form. This is a requirement of an encyclopedia because it is by definition a tertiary source, synthesizing already published information. So while you must cite to sources, what you CANNOT DO is copy and paste copyrighted text from anywhere, be it an online cite, a book, or what have you. To make this as clear as possible: You can use already published sources as a source of information—in fact we require it—but you must say it in your own words. I don't want to lead you down the garden path. if you post a new article which does not infringe on the websites copyright, you still must show notability and verifiability, or the article may be deleted on those separate bases. Unfortunately, having done some cursory research, I haven't found any other sources but the website itself. Of course, as someone familiar with the topic, you are much better situated to find those required sources. I just don't want to set you up for disappointment thinking that so long as you don't violate copyright, your work is done. Best of luck.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:18, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Speedy deletion of Image:Antebellumblueeyes.JPG
editA tag has been placed on Image:Antebellumblueeyes.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Antebellumblueeyes.JPG|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
