Anarchy and Anonymous

edit

If you don't mind, what's the difference between Anarchy and 'a lack of authority'? My understanding was that Anarchy didn't imply disorder, only non-centralized, emergent order. In which case how are the terms necessarily different? Not to mention the general anti-authority bent of both Anonymous and Anarchists. Ocaasi (talk) 16:31, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Clifton,

I've recently become aware of your work on YouTube, and enjoying your body of work, I've subscribed to your channel. Viewing your various Q&A series, I belatedly realized your notability as an actor. Specifically, I noticed a viewer question and your response regarding Wikipedia here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tc78TzLfdng

Searching out your Wikipedia article, I've begun a slow process of editing it over the past few weeks. (This can be investigated by clicking on the "History" tab above the article body. This will present a "Revision history" list. I've been editing under the screen name Cast.) As an editor for five years, I have far more experience on that website than this one. I can provide you with instruction on how to upload an images, if you would still be interested in doing so.

I've noted an account which has edited the page previously under the user name "Clifton's Notes". This is the exact title of your Twitter account. Would I be far off base to presuppose this is an account you created? The editor altered the article body with very specific details that I imagine only you would know. If so, we could use that account as a point of further contact. Again, I'm very unfamiliar with using YouTube, and I find Wikipedia to be my stronger field.

To simplify this for you, I'll provide instruction. I'm assuming you are ignorant of Wikipedia mechanics, so please pardon me if I've presumed too much.

You may leave a message at this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Cast

Please activate the "new section" tab at the top of the main body, and activate the signature by typing "Cast (talk) 03:35, 30 May 2011 (UTC)". This automatically stamps your message with your user name and a time stamp.Reply

Hi Cast!

Wow! I haven't seen my Wiki article in quite a while. I'm very honored and flattered that you've put so much work into updating it and making it more accurate. A while back I do remember trying my best to edit some details about me that Wikipedia had wrong, but I was under the impression that my edits were rejected, or that they were invalid, or something. But I really had no idea what I was doing, and gave up.

Thank you so much for everything, and let me know if there's anything I can do to help you.

Copy of original private message on YouTube. Summary:I highly recommend we use Wikipedia in our future communication. That platform can be hassle for you to learn, but it'll be for the best in the long run. Also, are you User:Cliftonsnotes or not? Just trying to clear that up. Message originally sent on 5/26/2011. Copied here to centralize discussion. --Cast (talk) 03:35, 30 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Scott,

I appreciate the prompt response. There are several points of your response I'd like to touch on, but I feel it's more important that we quickly establish an easy way for us to confer with each other.

Without bias for my experience on Wikipedia, I think we should settle on using it. Just to be clear, are you, or are you not the user "Cliftonsnotes" ? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Cliftonsnotes) My recommendation is that if you don't have an account, you should create one. This will come with several benefits.

The first benefit is that it creates a point of contact for the future. You're desire to set facts straight regarding your biography is owed to you. It is Wikipedia's policy to immediately remove any information that could be potentially libelous, or at the least, inaccurate. If you ever see any disinformation on your biography, or poorly worded statements that could be misinterpreted, I encourage you to bring this up on the article's discussion page. Other editors may help you if you don't know how to alter information within Wikipedia's guidelines. Special groups of editors have banded together to form "WikiProjects" -- collectives who coordinate based on their affinity for a subject. A list of these can be viewed on the Scott Clifton discussion page. I think the projects on Biographies, Soap Operas, and Atheism would be most interested in the subject of your biography. I'm not the only editor you can count on in this regard.

Creating your own account would also allow you to set account preferences that will send email alerts to you when users leave notes on your personal talk page (as you did on mine, and as I in turn received an email notice). That will allow you to follow editor comments, even when you don't make checking into Wikipedia a regular habit.

An account will allow you to upload media, such as images, videos, and sound files. An up-to-date image of yourself would be an obvious start, but you may also provide images of you at work, behind the scenes, as a child, or among family. Examples of your work, or your internet hobby can also be shown.

You'll also be able to create a "watchlist", sending you notifications when articles of interest to you are edited. This may be your own biography, among other articles you care about.

And as a final benefit (though there may be others not occurring to me now,) when you leave messages for others, the signature stamp ("~~~~") will place your account name. When you are not sign in, the signature stamp leaves your ISP number, which identifies you only if you continue using the same computer. An account name is more reliable in authenticating who you are.

I understand if this seems a bit daunting, and I want to make this as easy for you as possible. Your offer of help is very appreciated, as the vast -- vast -- majority of subjects will never be able to apply their own perspectives to their Wikipedia biography. However, I also expect that you are a busy man with a busy job and a busy agenda. I don't expect you to have time to learn the ins and outs of this platform. I would only ask that you to upload an image of yourself. There is far more you could hypothetically do, from donating media, to providing input on your take on the article's progress -- but let's not push too hard, too soon. For now, understand that you simply have a point of contact if you want any help on the subject. In a YouTube video comment, you stated that you don't know how to upload images. Again, creating an account will allow you to do that. We can start there for now.

Right, a few days have passed and I'm gathering my energy reserves for the task at hand.
I did say in my last message that I would touch on your comments. I looked over the edit history of User:Cliftonsnotes (again, here I go assuming that's you) and noticed the edits made by this user were largely removed by time, though several were reverted immediately. These were minor issues, and though the novice may be concerned that the platform is too intimidating to master, I'm sure you would reassure me that YouTube is something I could get a handle of, if only I were try make a real effort. Don't be intimidated by Wikipedia. It's like a wild... well, wolf. It's more afraid of you than you are of it.
I'm treading water right now because I'm very unfamiliar with the Soap Opera subculture in the US. I've been trying to expand my knowledge on what sources of information I can count on for your biography. There has been no published work of biography on anyone's part to document the whole of your life, so it looks like I'll have to look at pop culture gossip magazines and television that caters to Soap fans. There seems to be little attention paid to your hobby in the field, though I'm sure you're already aware. That means the sections I'm most familiar with are going to eventually be the most bare. For now though, they receive the best coverage. That may satisfy your YouTube fans, but it doesn't do your career justice. I'll see what I can do about that down the line.
For now, I do have some minor tasks I'd like your help on. These are perfectly suited for you. Not overly taxing, but still essential. I'd be much appreciative if you could upload an image of yourself and of your signature. To provide an example, I would point to you to Taylor Lautner as an example of a young male actor who's article is far more expansive than yours (and where, I demand to know, is the justice in that? We'll take care of that in no time.) The signature located on that page was digitally lifted from an autograph found online. I could do the same with your own autograph, and have found a few online. However you may prefer to submit an updated signature. One you typically use. As for an image -- I'd ideally like one that could become a featured image. These are images that are considered the cream of the crop. To achieve that, we'd need to meet certain criteria.
You wouldn't be the only celebrity who has donated an image for Wikipedia which achieved that standard. Observe Michele Merkin's donation.
Now that aside, I promised to make this easier for you, so if you'd like to forgo presenting the super-duper best image you can, just get a nice portrait of yourself from a friend. Sign in with an account, and upload them. Wikimedia Commons is a sister project to Wikipedia, and functions as a free resource for media that is free for the public to use. If you would be so willing, upload your images there. At the left menu bar, you'll see a section marked "Participate" and a link, "Upload file". This is the painful part: you'll need an account. There's go going any further without this. Once you've signed up, the "Upload file" link creates a wizard, a series of preset instructions in a simple question and answer format. Answer the questions about the images and it should handle the rest. If you have any questions, just upload them as best you can and shoot me a message. Leaving the technical challenges to me, I can fill out the details and connect your Wikipedia article with them.
I hope this isn't too much information at once. Take this project at your leisure and don't hold back any questions you have. I'm here to help. --Cast (talk) 03:35, 30 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Non-free rationale for File:Marie-Louise Berneri.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Marie-Louise Berneri.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Occupy Wall Street

Would you mind restoring Leaderless and the relevant reference in the Infobox? Unless you have a reason for not doing so. Thanks. --Fayerman (talk) 19:21, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pardon, but I did try to keep that in there for as long as possible, while I also tried to expand on the list of participants. However, that list was becoming too long, and filling in the list of participants and "leaders" automatically set up an opposite field for the opposition, which doesn't have a list of participants or leaders at this point. It was best to just remove these fields. In their place, I created the "Participants" section which I moved the note on the leaderless aspect of the participants, and also included the citation originally used in the infobox. Nothing has been lost, and the infobox is now streamlined. If you want to make the leaderless aspect of this group more apparent, which I support, I suggest you expand on this in the participant section. --Cast (talk) 19:27, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
That aspect was already "apparent". See the Background and Participants sections (search for "leaderless"). Please restore that field in the Infobox. Thank you. --Fayerman (talk) 20:49, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
While I have no interest in provoking an edit war, I hope you'll understand that this request won't get you very far. I invite you to experiment with the infobox entries yourself. Attempting to enter "Leaderless" into the first two "leading figures" entries will create the "opposing parties" tables I deleted, which won't aid reader understanding given that neither side has apparent leader figures, making the entry redundant. Attempting to place "Leaderless" in the third party entry to create a singular, centered entry, leaves the field blank. It won't accept an entry unless the first two fields are filled. This is not getting us anywhere. If you feel the leaderless element of the protest is not apparent enough, you can use a quote template to create a large pull quote; perhaps place it in a whole section devoted to the horizontalist, non-hierarchical element of this "leaderless resistance" using the numerous articles and media commentary on the subject. --Cast (talk) 21:03, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Exactly what am I being warned about? I was in the process of reverting an editor who has been blanking sections from various park articles on the Occupy protests. I am not responsible for any text that I was restoring, as that was previously written by other editors. I have no interest in whatever soapy agenda previous editors had. I just want to create a sub-section on the Occupy protests and see this expanded upon. If you have time, I invite you to join me in doing so. --Cast (talk) 22:46, 27 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I assumed you shared some responsibility for restoring soapy crap. If I am wrong I apologize. Jesanj (talk) 22:59, 27 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
No, no, there is responsibility for restoring it. I was undoing a section blank by an editor who's on a serial purge through several articles. I was in a rush and serial restoring, and didn't see that this was soapy material. I just don't take responsibility for writing it or having an biased agenda. I've created the sub-section and have tagged it for expansion, but I won't be restoring the text previously there. That text may be notable, but it will need citation. Happy editing. --Cast (talk) 23:02, 27 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Cast,

Just want to give you a heads up that some Chumbawamba articles may be at risk because they are old and the editor(s) used the Wikipedia citation standards of the time. Frankly, nearly all my Wikipedia editing skills need relearning anyway as I've gotten very discouraged by what's been going on with the Adjustment Team article and inability to even be sure if this is due to genuine failures to communicate, generational cultural differences, "the Mississippi Chinese newspaper literacy test", something else or some unclear combination of factors. Would you mind if I suggested it at WP:TFAR for Today's Featured Article sometime this month? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:34, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I wouldn't mind at all. It's not something that might disrupt any work on the article, though I do think it is in need of a split in it's "Publication History" section. It is now, in terms of readable text, a little over 60kB. I was told that it should be split at that point. I actually would like to suggest Anarky could be held off until 2013 (which is not as far off as it once seemed) so that it can be featured when Beware The Batman premiers. Thank you for your interest, and for seeking my input.--Cast (talk) 22:45, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
That sounds like an idea; (early?) 2013 should be really good. I agree that a split may be called for. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:57, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
My understanding is that Beware is to premier in the Spring television season, so any sprucing the article needs to undergo should be taken on ASAP. I already have a sandbox set up for the publication history, but I haven't been working on it terribly. I'll get back on it. Ideally, the article can be featured as advertising for the series begins to hit the airwaves, as that will draw more people into internet searches for the character, which will lead them to Wikipedia article.--Cast (talk) 23:09, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
I really don't know when the Spring schedule will begin, but within that time frame, I don't know exactly when Cartoon Network will begin airing the show. We would really need to wait for official announcements to be made. I would expect initial announcements for the show's schedule three months prior to an air date, with follow-up advertisements declaring a specific date within two months. We could know an approximate date by January, with a specific date being known by February. Most shows starting in spring begin airing (to the best of my knowledge) between mid March and mid April. --Cast (talk) 00:20, 29 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

edit

Do you know if there's a reason why the article on Anonymous isn't listed under the ATF with relevant categories and a link to the portal?   czar · · 23:45, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Anarchist Task Force? Well, Anonymous has an interesting and indirect history with anarchist philosophy. In fact, I happen to know that one of the early moderators, Shii, was influential in encouraging Moot to make 4chan an anonymous board was himself an individualist anarchist, and based his promotion of an anonymous board on Hakim Bey's TAZ concept. However, beyond this, Anonymous has never been an anarchist organization, nor been influenced by anarchist philosophy. --Cast (talk) 01:42, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I reached out to you since I saw you were involved in this intersection in the past. Regardless of whether they read bearded men, it's a completely decentralized organization that fights for individual liberties and has been classified as anarchic. Thought it'd be a shoo-in by way of classification, but okay. How do you know that, about Shii? czar · · 03:00, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
If we are to begin categorizing organizations as being anarchist-related simply by being decentralized, and fighting for "individual liberties" such as the first amendment (which is not anarchist), then a host of non-anarchist organizations, or perhaps even anti-anarchist organizations, would be categorized as being related to the ATF. This is a misleading way of judging organizations. As for Shii-- Shii.org is a site where he once documented his history on the web in the late '00, and much of what he wrote was backed by other writings across different website archives revolving around 4chan at the time. Many of those documents are gone, and Shii has deleted much of his own information, closing his own website and citing that other sources are available now that document the history of 4chan. Since I have no reliable source, I won't bother attempting to include this information on the Anonymous article. --Cast (talk) 20:44, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

File permission problem with File:Kate Sharpley.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Kate Sharpley.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 12:12, 1 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. I'm not sure if you created the page, but I know that you have contributed more to the article than anyone else. I am of course referring to Anarky, perhaps the best comic book character article I've seen on this entire site. Bravo. DarkKnight2149 03:50, 21 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for the recognition. Your help in maintaining the article and contributing fresh updates as new information becomes available has made a tremendous difference. To satisfy any curiosity you might have, I didn't create the article, and by checking the entries on record, it was created in November of 2004. I didn't begin to contribute to it until November of 2006. Checking the last entry made before I began my contributions and other editors subsequently built upon my work, I am reminded of how far the article has come. But as I've written on the talk page, editors like yourself have kept this project going, and I'm very grateful for the help you and others have provided. --Cast (talk) 02:02, 22 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of End Time (novel)

edit

The article End Time (novel) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This topic lacks significant coverage from reliable, independent sources. (?) Only hit in Book Review Index is from Small Press Book Review (Nov 1994). There are no worthwhile redirect targets, as it isn't listed in another article and the author has no article.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. czar 12:40, 21 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Cyberpunk- Shock to the System.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Cyberpunk- Shock to the System.jpg.
