Template:Help desk templates navbox
Hi, just saw your edit to the template. I don't know much about coding so wondered what the "state" parameter does. Thanks! – ukexpat (talk) 16:33, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hi! The 'state' parameter makes it possible to show the template in an expanded or collapsed state. You can include something like {{Help desk templates navbox|state=expanded}} to use it. I think it's collapsed by default. Once again, nice work creating it :) Chamal talk 02:12, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Clarification
I wanted to clear up any confusion. My statement on translations is simply in regards to the idea that PD information can simply be copied and pasted and deemed as new, without any attempt to actually make something new. A real translation with real research and actual English sources is new, and not the PD dump that Gato seemed to support. Also, a real translation using real sources would be verifiable, where a simple copy and paste and keeping the same sources would not be. I hope that clears it up. Ottava Rima (talk) 03:04, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- I was talking about this comment. Sorry for the confusion. Chamal talk 04:34, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, that was more of a neutral note to make sure that we can easily see what pages were pulling material from what (if people actually followed the policy). I would note that Mattisse's problem with translations seems to heavily deal with pages like this that were authored by those who seem to encourage the laxity of standards that MoS et al seem to have ensured before. Ottava Rima (talk) 05:10, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your message
Thanks for your message, Chamal; I always appreciate having someone to help me put things in perspective, and you are a great contributor at DYK so your opinion is valued. But I have to say, I'm just sick and tired of this particular editor (I don't know if you were around a few weeks ago to see the last time he decided to single me out, badger me, and start threads about things such as "Politizer's deception") and I'm very tempted to just stop editing at DYK until he is topic-banned. I have been avoiding doing something that drastic because I don't want to punish DYK for someone else's behavior, but I'm starting to be unable to see any other solution. Politizer talk/contribs 04:08, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I have been following the discussions, and they do seem to go off topic and eventually end up as accusations. Let's just try to keep a calm head. Hope you won't let this interfere with your contributions. You're an invaluable contributor to DYK, and it would a big loss indeed if you left. I just sent you an email about this, too. Hey, thanks for signing up! If you need help with things give me a poke on my talkpage, or leave it on the project talk if you feel it is a query that needs wider attention. Suggested things we need doing at the moment:
- Tagging entries on List of prizes, medals, and awards with the project tag on their talkpage, which takes the form of {{WikiProject Awards|importance=High|class=B}}, substituting "high" and "B" for the appropriate classification (the way we work such things out is on the project page). All of the science-related ones have been done by yours truly; I'm not sure how far through the humanities ones we've got, though. Keep out of the way of military and national orders; those are covered elsewhere.
- Looking at one of our current collaborations. At the moment we're working on two featured topics; if they interest you, sign up, if you have something you think would work well, feel free to propose it!

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! | ||
Hey there, Chamal N! Happy new Gregorian year. All the best for the new year, both towards you and your family and friends too. I know that I am the only person lonely enough to be running this thing as the new year is ushered in, but meh, what are you going to do. I like to keep my templated messages in a satisfactorily melancholy tone. ;)
Congratulations to Coren, Wizardman, Vassyana, Carcharoth, Jayvdb, Casliber, Risker, Roger Davies, Cool Hand Luke and Rlevse, who were all appointed to the Arbitration Committee after the ArbCom elections. I am sure I am but a voice of many when I say I trust the aforementioned users to improve the committee, each in their own way, as listed within their respective election statements. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to update the 2009 article, heh. Best wishes, neuro(talk) 00:43, 1 January 2009 (UTC) |

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
If possible, I would like to see what changes i made to the page Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Obviously on this page there is issues with neutrality, and some information has been manipulated inorder to portray certain identities in a different light, varying from the reference provided.
I do apologise for the previous change on Rachel Mcadam's page, which was not carried out by me —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.107.100.206 (talk) 07:49, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
- It looks like this was your edit to that page. Cheers! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 07:58, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
- That's it. The source given (http://www.janes.com/security/international_security/news/usscole/jir001020_1_n.shtml) does not say that all attacks were against military targets and it clearly implies on suicide attacks against both civilian and military targets, so there's no need to remove civilians from that sentence. In fact, most of the suicide bombings have been against civilian targets. Since the topic is a sensitive one, we need to keep the facts as neutral as possible and give all viewpoints clearly.
- As for the Rachel McAdam's page, this seems to be the edit. I had nothing to do with that, nor do I like the tone or language of that warning. It doesn't seem to me like anything to be so harsh about. Chamal talk 09:16, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Hiya.. not sure if you've noticed, but there's a new link on the tool called 'handle'. If you want to create a request, mark it as handled so nobody else takes it. Stwalkerster implemented this to get rid of collisions, and make sure people had time to look carefully at each request if they feel something is hinky without someone else creating it and causing issues. Point being.. I was handling that one :P // roux 10:20, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Re:Nobel Laureates
Yeah, that topic is pretty much finished for the moment. Expanding the scope to include List of Nobel Laureates by country would mean including stuff like List of female Nobel Laureates and List of Nobel Laureates by university affiliation, both of which aren't really necessary. Thanks for the offer though. And btw, if you have a topic you want to propose, no matter how outlandishly difficult you think it is, please propose it. It's what the section is for. Sri Lanka
Thank you for helping watch the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam article - we're indeed overwhelmed there and are currently discussing at WT:SLR how to keep the flurry of unhelpful edits there under control. That said, the edits were not vandalism, they were just edits by a newbie who didn't know where to put the links to information they felt was pertinent. As Wikipedia, we want to draw such people into our project, so I wrote a clarification on User talk:Japanboy1232000. Hope to see you around! — Sebastian 20:52, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the message, Sebastian. But I believe you're mistaken here. Did you check the link http://www.tamilnet.tv/index.php/ltte-tactical-withdrwal-from-kokavil?blog=1 ? Note that it is not tamilnet.com, the pro-LTTE website. It is a link to tamilnet.tv, which is, if you look at it, clearly a mock website that publishes joke items. The items published there are completely anti-LTTE, somewhat racist too in my opinion, and I don't see how that link is pertinent to the subject in any way. Chamal talk 11:12, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- Adding a bit more to that, I find it hard to believe that this editor has made this edit in good faith. Their feelings are clearly against the LTTE judging by their edits, and this edit has been made to show the LTTE in a bad light (to show they are stupid, more like). Please note that I'm in no way a supporter of the LTTE, but quite the opposite. However, adding stuff like this is clearly a violation of NPOV and there is no useful info in that article to anyone who wants to know about the LTTE or anything else. I believe reverting was the correct thing to do here. Chamal talk 11:23, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- As with so many of our policies, the definition of vandalism has, thanks to the constant pounding of wikilawyers, become so ambiguous that it serves everybody's and nobody's purpose. (We call that a "rubber clause" in German.) I adhere to the definition of 2004, according to which his edits were no vandalism. If they were good faith is harder to say. Good and bad faith are two end points of a continuum. Having been a mediator for over two years, I probably tend to see more good faith than most Wikipedians. I'm not betting on Japanboy becoming a Featured Article writer. But behind that account is still a human being, full of outrage over an unbearable situation over which he has no control. (A bit more about my view on this in my Powerpoint presentation, which I presented to Nonviolent Peaceforce here.) By being open to such editors I want to show them that their voices will be heard here, if they just calm down a bit and adhere to our policies. This is in our own best interest: If we just put them in the "bad faith" corner right away, then many of them will feel that all they can do is come here with IP or throwaway accounts and vandalize articles they don't like. — Sebastian 17:58, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that he necessarily did it in bad faith. As I said, it may have been something to do with his personal feelings, but not made in the good faith of improving Wikipedia. I'm not saying that he will not become a valuable editor after he has had some experience and a good knowledge of policy. After all, there was a time when we all didn't know that something called NPOV existed ;) In that situation, I did what I felt was right - revert and issue him a warning (not really a warning - level 1 general notice). I still feel it was right, since the quality of Wikipedia articles should be there before we can think about the individual user. Would you suggest that I should have done otherwise? I'd appreciate your views and advice. Chamal talk 00:17, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
- Of the many templates available at WP:UWT, I would have picked {{subst:uw-npov1}}. But I'm happy that someone else is warning users at all; I don't want to be the only one. So, don't take this as a personal criticism, I guess I'm just oversensitive to the inflation of the term "vandalism" - See also here. — Sebastian 18:03, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

I am going to create a DYK quality article on the above Sinhala Budhist deity as part of a series on improving Aiyanar and Shasta. There are number of prominent shrines even within Buddhist Viharas of this deity North of Colombo all the way to Puttalam. Isit possible to get a picture of one of them ? Thanks Taprobanus (talk) 20:43, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Monarchs of Sri Lanka
Hello Chamal N, I am a member of WikiProject Sri Lanka and I edit articles on the History of Sri Lanka. Currently I have been working on the article List of monarchs of Sri Lanka and have been creating and editing articles of kings and queens of Sri Lanka. I came across the articles you have created on Sri Lankan kings Dhatusena of Sri Lanka, Kashyapa I of Sri Lanka and Mahasena of Sri Lanka which are all articles of great quality. Because of your experience and quality of editing I want you to help me complete the the section of monarchs of Sri Lanka, in the topic of the history of Sri Lanka, by creating more articles of monarchs of Sri Lanka on the listed article of List of monarchs of Sri Lanka and further improving the articles that have been already created. With your help we can educate Sri Lankans and others of the completed history of the monarchs of Sri Lanka. I would very much like you to do this when you have time so please reply soon. Oh and if you wouldn't mind can you also contribute to 2009 in Sri Lanka, thanks Blackknight12 (talk) and have a Happy new year. 08:14, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'm a bit busy right now, but I'll do what I can. I can definitely make a few more articles about monarchs. Chamal talk 02:16, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Me!
I'm not worrying about being a sockpuppet. I saw snowfire post on the talk page and misread. I then saw on Snowfire's talkpage '...I'm Ivy...' which I saw as could be a mistype. v and c are next to each other. I then went to Icy because of that. I only mentioned sockpuppet because Snowfire came back so harshly and I thought that she was friends with Pagan GRL. Thank you for clearing this up. Chubbennaitor 13:06, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Created new userbox
Hello Chamal, I created a userbox Template:User Sinhalese. Because Sinhalese hadn't one. Hope you add it and also give me a thought on where to put it to draw the attention of other users. I got the feeling WikiProject Sri Lanka ain't a good place. Regards! --Chanaka L (talk) 12:38, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, nice to hear from you again :) I guess the place to add it would be Wikipedia:Userboxes/Ethnic groups, but you have already added it there. I don't know about any other place (other than your own userpage, of course). Chamal talk 12:46, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hello again, I was suggesting a place like Wikipedia:WikiProject Tamil civilization/User Box. I think it's where the most novice users look. Only seasoned users know where to find them. so if there is no suitable place, let's hope they'll find it anyhow. Keep up the good work!

Chamal, thanks for suggesting. Now that the war is coming to an end we can go back to writing an encyclopedia for what ever it is worth but like I told a recent SLR member two years ago, this is an addiction (not that I am immune to it) and it can consume u if you don’t take breaks like you are doing now although I have managed to keep my day job, my wife not divorcing me and my kids still call me pappa while whiling away in Wikipedia I sometimes do think about all the potential that I may have not fulfilled because of all this. Just keep the focus on real life. Taprobanus (talk) 18:10, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

DYK question
Hey, Chamal. After you've gotten over the shock of finding a friend betray you and feed you to da monstahs (;D) I've got a question to ask. Would it be considered cheating to write an article in your sandbox, polish it over the course of several months, then debut it in the mainspace and get a DYK for it? —La Pianista (T•C) 05:26, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

New DYK template for nominations
Hi,
I've been working, somewhat at Gatoclass's behest, to develop a new version of {{DYKsug}} that doesn't leave so much junk on the nominations page (partly just to be tidier, partly to reduce the page's byte count and, hopefully, its load time). The new template is complete and located at {{NewDYKnomination}} ({{NewDYKnom}} also works). It is used in almost the exact same way as the current template (the only difference being that |creator=
and |expander=
have been merged into a single |writer=
parameter, since there seems to have been confusion in the past about the difference between these two); there is more discussion of the new template at Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Archive 39#New template for nominations--please provide feedback if you have a moment and Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Archive 39#Working on a better nomination template.
Since you do a lot of work vetting nominations, you are one of the people who will be most affected by the template change (although the effect shouldn't be very big...the main difference is just that this template is less complicated and the format will look a bit different), so I am hoping to hear your thoughts before I go ahead with making the switch from the current system to this one. Here is an example of what the template generates (and here is what it looks like in the edit window).

- @ Pianista: So you're saying I have underestimated myself? - Thanks guys! Ed, I was surprised at this, and well... it's nice to know that others feel the same way about it, I guess :)
- @BE: That is depressing all right. I mean, even our school first XI can hold on to our wickets and put up a fight, but here everybody goes down like it's a waterfall or something. About your idea of the LTTE, personally I believe that being Tamil has nothing to do with it. Maybe they really had the belief that they were fighting for the Tamil's "liberation" in the beginning, but now the leaders are fighting for their own survival IMO. Why else would they use child soldiers, and use the same people they claim to represent as a shield? And why follow terrorism at all if your demands are fair and legitimate? Anyway, that's my opinion and I guess that's not relevant here :) Chamal talk 12:01, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- Did you like my edit summary for the second edit? I was tired, so I missed the buttons I wanted...and then I accidentally hit 'enter'. :/
- No, I saw that and literally immediately copied + pasted it to my user page. Child soldiers and terrorism is not something good in this world, and who knows...maybe it made a difference in someone LTTE's mind and caused them to switch sides or something. Maybe not, but maybe yes...but those were nice words Chamal - poetic, but haunting. Hope you had a great day, —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 16:37, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- Lol yeah, I can see you've copy-pasted, but that counts as sharing the thoughts :)
- What does this mean though: "maybe it made a difference in someone LTTE's mind and caused them to switch sides or something"?
- Maybe I should have explained that more....what I meant was, maybe a Tamil Tiger saw it, and even if it didn't cause them to switch sides, maybe the wishful words for peace made them think about what harm they are doing...eh, who knows. It was me rambling. :) Sorry! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 18:27, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
