- @ Pianista: You'll have plenty of time to catch up. I'm planning to minimize editing (well, almost) sometime next month... now haven't we heard that before? I won't be focusing much on DYK anyway, there are some battle articles that need to be improved :) Chamal talk 04:34, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

HELP!
Alright, I give up. I can't fix my sig. I know you're offline at the moment (or so says your status), but whenever you're available, please help me customize my signature. I'd like it to go along the lines of something like this: Whip it! Now whip it good! with these colors and some fancy fonts, like
this
. I'm not terribly good with HTML, by the way, but I really want to know how to do this myself so I won't have to ask for help each time I want to change my sig. --Crackthewhip775 (talk) 07:17, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hello. I'm not Chamal - a friend of his though, and I'm willing to help. :) Here's your sig - Whip it! Now whip it good!
- Here is the code:
<font face="comic sans ms"><span style="color:#F08080;">W</span><span style="color:#E9967A;">h</span><span style="color:salmon;">i</span><span style="color:#DC143C;">p</span> <span style="color:#B22222;">i</span><span style="color:#8B0000;">t!</span> Now whip it good!</font>
- Font color specifies the color you choose, and font face specifies the face. Sup is for superscript. All it takes is a very close look - you can learn it yourself, as I did.
- Hope this helps,
- —La Pianista (T•C) 07:34, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- Ah... the Wikijaguar saves the day again. Well, nothing left for me to do I guess. If there's anything else, please ask :) Chamal talk 12:38, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- Jaguar? Kinky. :P
- Actually, I've flopped with that, and I'm trying to fix it right now. But the jaguar will take care of that, too. —La Pianista (T•C) 00:46, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Ah... the Wikijaguar saves the day again. Well, nothing left for me to do I guess. If there's anything else, please ask :) Chamal talk 12:38, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- How's this one:
- Whip it! Now whip it good!
- <font face="comic sans"><span style="color:#C66">Wh</span><span style="color:#600">ip</span> <span style="color:#C33">it</span><span style="color:#900">!</span> Now whip it good!</font>
- I've used "comic sans" and not "comic sans ms", which gives it the formatting you showed. The colour combination is not very pretty, sorry about that :) Change the colours using the codes in this table (since it's shorter than the hex codes, it takes up less space). The "#" symbol should be in front or it won't work. Are there any changes to be made? Chamal talk 04:07, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Again, I apologize for the long wait for my reply, but thank you, it works! --Whip it! Now whip it good! 04:36, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- How's this one:
- Great! Glad to help :) Chamal talk 04:40, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Your wording is quite neutral and acceptable. Please feel free to make the change. Best Wishes Kerr avon (talk) 14:04, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Hey
Hey man, I haven't seen you around in awhile. I took a bit of a break from RE patrolling. I got bored and fired up Huggle for the first time in a lonnnngggg time. I'm back and ready to rock, though. Knippschild (talk) 06:42, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hi there! Nice to hear from you again. I haven't been huggling too much either. With the bugs and slowness in the new versions, I had to switch to 0.7.12 again. Anyway I'm a bit busy in real life now so most of the time I can spend here, I'm trying to focus on improving some articles. Chamal talk 11:23, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! I had to get it renamed as an effort to vanish use of my real name. Last night I had an issue with some wikitrolls stalking me, calling my personal cell number, IMing me, et cetera. While I know that the damage is already done, I am trying to exercise damage control and reduce issues in the future. I'm currently seeking petition to be nominated as a Sysop to help my role in being vigilant (in the good way) against vandalism. Any ideas *wink*? Alpha 4615 (talk) 21:58, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
- Frankly, I think it's too early for you to think of becoming an admin. You have less than 2000 edits, and very little experience in article writing. Being a vandal fighter, you'd have a lot of experience in dealing with difficult situations and editors, but that alone will not gain you a lot of support at WP:RFA. Most people like to see admin candidates participating in areas like WP:XFD, WP:AN etc in addition to article writing. Participating in these areas will show that you have a good knowledge on Wikipedia policies and guidelines, something that will impress a lot of people and also help to gain their trust. I think the best thing for you would be to wait a little longer, get some more experience and then go for it. Chamal talk 12:14, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for contributions to the project, Great work, especially on List of Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka - great job on the sourcing. May you wear the crowns well. Cirt (talk) 10:52, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Viewpoint & Advice Needed
Hey Chamal. I'm going through some stuff right now that requires attention from administrators/arbcom. I've made a post in AN/I - can you please advise? Alpha 4615 (talk) 18:30, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
- Maybe you should read Wikipedia:HARASS#Dealing_with_harassment. I think you're doing fine right now. The deletion of the article is not an issue; that seems to be perfectly ok, but the problem here is the offwiki harassment. However, I'm not in any position to take any action against this, and the best place is AN/I (which you have done). You can get some help from very experienced editors there. Let's see how things turn out. Chamal talk 12:00, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

LRRP
Ayubowan! it just doesn't feel right to have that section there in the intro. i hope understand y. "launching attacks on...civilians"! i dont know if putting a reference would help. And also can u help me with creating an article 4 king parakramabahu VI? i wrote it many times and got deleted. once sm1 said he's not a noteworthy personality or smthing as da reason 4 deleting! im going 2 find sm info on him and try writing again. TIA--Sandeepani 11:23, 13 February 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Svm1 63 (talk • contribs)
- Ayubowan! (feels nice to use that here :)) We have to include that info in the lead, since that is something important about the unit. We must record their achievements, but we also have to record their faults/accusations against them. That's how neutrality of an article can be maintained. When we give information about something, we have to include both sides of the story, even if one is completely false.
- As for the Parakramabahu VI article, I can help you with it. He was quite a notable king and there's no reason Wikipedia can't have an article on him. What we have to do is make the article verifiable, and say why he is notable. Tell me when you are going to make it and I'll definitely help. Chamal talk 11:47, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

- Nice :) But you really should stop leaving friendly messages on people's talk pages without making any mainspace contributions (your last was on Feb. 6, followed by a load of user talk edits). As I (and others) have told you before, a lot of people will not take kindly to this kind of behaviour. Chamal talk 02:06, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

RFA
Dear Chamal, slightly belated post holiday thanks for your support in my RFA which this time was successful, I was very flattered by your comment "a good editor who acts sensibly and with a lot of clue" and will try to live up to it. The full Oscar acceptance speech version of my Thankspam is here :-) WereSpielChequers 00:39, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
Your comment about the edit fights
Well said! Your message is to the point and determined while still being respectful. Engaging both sides in a constructive discussion is the best solution. Unfortunately, it may require the mediator to put in lots of time, especially when non-members are involved. As for me, I currently don't have that time, which is why I proposed WP:SLR#Simple version: Don't re-revert!, as a rule that doesn't take much time to enforce. I would be happy if you could comment on it and/or improve it; it would always be useful as a fallback mechanism. — Sebastian 08:00, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
- Your idea seems excellent to me. This might just be the solution to stop edit warring. I'll look into it more thoroughly and comment at there. Chamal talk 11:40, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Battle of Gannoruwa
I'm reviewing Battle of Gannoruwa and would ask you to improve the article in order to make it pass GAC. Wandalstouring (talk) 09:27, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. It's been so long I had forgotten, and I don't check my watchlist very often now. I'll make a reply (when I have time) to some of your comments where clarification is needed, but apart from that, I'm currently not in a position to improve the article. Particularly the RS problem is there; if you think the newspapers are not reliable enough, then there are no better sources to be found except the few books I have already included. We don't have that many good books etc giving detailed info on our history. The occasional article appearing in a newspaper is the best we can actually hope for. Anyway, I suggest you fail the article straight away, since I can't improve it now. Maybe I'll get round to it some time later :) Chamal talk 11:30, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
- Your newspapers need sources to write articles. It's best you find out who wrote the newspaper articles and ask her/him if he can help you finding some sources. Sorry, but you're argumentation that there aren't more sources isn't acceptable, there are. There are certainly Portuguese sources about the events. Try the Portuguese embassy in your country, they are usually well aware of one countries history and are likely able to help you. When asking them, write that you want to publish an article about these events in an online media(if you mention wikipedia they may be inclined to fail you). Next step can be a university's history departement where you blatantly ask an academic on that field if he can point you to some sources about the topic. Wandalstouring (talk) 10:47, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I should have made it clear; these are the best that I can find at the moment. Of course, if I really get down to it I would be able to find something. A lot of Sinhalese language books can be found on the subject (and I can't write an English article with only Sinhalese sources), but not many others can be found easily. Anyway, this is just an article I wrote, not a research thesis ;) I can't put such a lot of effort into uncovering sources right now since I am busy in real life. I won't be improving the article to meet the requirements in the near future. When I get the chance some time later, I will work on it again. Therefore, I suggest you fail the GAN now. Or should I withdraw it? Thanks for the detailed review, it will certainly be helpful to me or anyone else who'd be trying to improve the article later on :) Chamal talk 11:34, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- I don't want to put any pressure on you, take your time because it's quality that matters, not speed. There's no problem using lots of foreign language sources for an article. Most likely the subject will be covered in Sinhalese and Portuguese and in the age of web 2.0 it's easy to get a rough translation of these. If you come across Portuguese sources you can't decipher post it in MILHIST Linguistics. They'll find someone to help you. I'll fail the article as you wish. Wandalstouring (talk) 13:59, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- I waited some time for you to change your mind. Still, I'll try to help you bringing this article to GA and will write about the rivalry between the Dutch and the Portuguese. If you have brought the rest to an acceptable standard using reliable Sinhalese or other sources(read WP:reliable sources on that). I can help you find a good copyeditor to make the article not only informative, but a pleasure to read. Greetings Wandalstouring (talk) 19:02, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the encouragement. But as I said before, I'm busy in real life right now and I will try to improve the article when things are back to normal. But that's not going to be any time soon. Chamal talk 00:59, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Motto of the Day Free Ice Cream Day!
By Imperial Decree of His Divine Majesty, our Most Sublime Padishah God-Emperor, Car'a'carn, Editor-in-Chief, etc. (may he live for ever) of the Dominion of the Motto of the Day, every Thursday is Free Ice Cream Day throughout the the Realm. Therefore, our glorious ruler (may he live for ever) has caused to be delivered to you by the Ministry of Frozen or Otherwise Cold Desert Treats this ice cream treat (which may include gelato, depending on one's interpretation of the picture). Let it be eaten without delay, lest the heat of the servers melt it. Let it not drip onto the Article Namespace, lest you suffer the Death of a Thousand Edits for allowing unencyclopedic melted desert treat to get into the wiki. Hi- can you help please?
Hi there! I am looking for a help of an experienced wikipedian, any chance you have some time to spare? --WDIAROM (talk) 08:47, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- Sure, what do you want help with? But I'm not around most of the time now, so I might not be here when you need me for something. If that is the case, you can always try at the help desk or find someone from highly active users. Or you can ask my friends, The ed17 or User:La Pianista, who are both experienced and know their way around here well. Chamal talk 12:24, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Help Desk
Thanks for the help; since you say that it's a valid newspaper link, I'll support keeping it there, as with smalltown articles it's generally seen as a good thing to have the local newspaper. Nyttend (talk) 05:17, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey dude
What's up? Long time no chat. :) I know that you like battle articles, so would you like to take a little time and help me with Dutch East Indies campaign? I'm nomming it for DYK because of the 5x expansion, but it would be nice to get, say, what the Japanese did when attacking into the article. I can add some, but my schedule is getting tighter. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 06:10, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'll try to do something. Thanks btw, I didn't have anything to do :) Chamal talk 06:20, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Lol no problem. :) I've got Morison's The Rising Sun in the Pacific next to me, so I can add a lot more...but I've got nothing on the land battles and only a mediocre amount on the Japanese...although the latter might be enough, the former is not. Buuut having said all of that...if you are too busy or something, don't feel bad. If you do help though, you will be sharing in the DYK for sure. ;) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 06:24, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- OK :) Added a tiny bit. Sorry for the not so perfect wording... it's been a long time since I added anything to an article ;) I was going to add some more in the evening, but couldn't find enough time to look for sources. Maybe you can add from the one source I found. I'm not taking credit for the DYK, because I haven't done & can't do enough for that article to take it. I'll try to help more if I log in tomorrow. Chamal talk 11:41, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! If/whenever you can, please add more, though a fair warning: one more para, and you're going to be taking credit for the DYK with me. ;) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 16:13, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

ANI posting
... I personally would have had no issue with your comment on the Axemann issue being included, even though it had been closed/enacted/archived. (talk→ Bwilkins / BMW ←track) 11:30, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- I guess it's not a problem, but I should have been more careful. The archiving was apparently already done when I started editing, but I didn't notice that on the edit box :) Chamal talk 11:34, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Concerning casualties in Afghanistan
You've deleted al the extra links to articles, you've only kept the official notes of the pentagon. I'm not pleased with that ! You could 've asked ... (frederik.poelmans@gmail.com) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Perelada (talk • contribs) 08:03, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- I have no idea what you are talking about. Can you please provide links to my edits? I don't remember editing such an article and I have looked over my last 1000 edits and found nothing related to Afghanistan. Chamal talk 11:48, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

My Minion-
I require your support in my current bid for absolute power over the Wiki. As your Glorious God-Emperor and Editor-in-Chief, I expect a favorable vote from you during this vital process. Thank you. Nutiketaiel (talk) 13:07, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- Wha...? Minion??? I'm the minister for some important thingy that I can't exactly remember! Chamal : Chat 13:11, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- You are still my Minister of Film and Grand Duke of Film Quotes (and, by the way, that means you'll be in charge of Wikiproject:Films after my glorious takeover). That makes you an Executive Minion. :-) But still my minion, though. Nutiketaiel (talk) 13:14, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
The Military history WikiProject Newsletter : Issue XXXVII (March 2009)
| |||
The big news of course was the seventh project coordinator election covering the period ending 30 September. The quality of the candidates was extremely high, with some of the project's top content builders running alongside highly experienced backroom people. Of the eighteen candidates, sixteen were finally appointed, giving us probably the most rounded coordination team so far. Those elected were: Abraham, B.S., Bellhalla, Cam, Eurocopter, EyeSerene, Ian Rose, Jackyd101, Joe N, Lordoliver, Maralia, MBK004, Nick-D, Roger Davies (lead), Skinny87, The ed17 and TomStar81. Kirill Lokshin continues in his role as coordinator emeritus. Thanks must go to the departing coordinators – Bedford, JonCatalán and Woody – for helping make the project what it is today The C-class referendum, held at the same time, produced a slight majority of votes for introduction, but was insufficient to demonstrate a clear consensus. So, for the time being at least, therefore, the project will continue without C-class. Otherwise, focus is likely be on the Academy and the development of courses to develop reviewing, copy-editing and article-building skills. Some review of our task forces is also probable, perhaps consolidating some of the smaller, quieter, ones. As ever, input from everyone is not only welcomed but positively encouraged. The coordinators' gratitude goes not only to those who participated in the election and referenda but also to everyone who works quietly and conscientiously away to make participation in this project rewarding, successful and productive. Milhist is very fortunate in its membership! Thank you all, Roger Davies talk 16:15, 2 April 2009 (UTC) |
