Zoie Palmer article

Hello. You protected the Zoie Palmer article on 21 May 2016. I think a particular kind problem is happening: substitution of infobox image (by a registered editor) without explanation, and re-adding it after another editor (me) reversed the edit with a summary that the new image be discussed in the talk page. There may be more to the intent behind the addition of what is, in my estimation, an unflattering photo of a living person: 1, 2, 3 Pyxis Solitary talk 12:29, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

@Pyxis Solitary: I actually didn't protect the article originally. That was Bearcat. My edit last May was to add the lock at the top of the page to let editors know it was protected.
As to the new image, it would appear that the user who added that image took the photo themselves. Their contributions list shows similar changes to other biographical articles. That would also explain why they're keen to keep that image on Zoie Palmer, as opposed to it being deliberately unflattering (though it may be unintentionally so). I will note that the photo is five years more recent than the previous one. That said, I agree that there should be a discussion and consensus regarding which image should be in the infobox since the inclusion of the current image has been challenged. Since you've already started a discussion on the article talk page, I'll notify Sleyatx that they should join the discussion instead of reverting. clpo13(talk) 23:20, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for explaining the protection. The article endured persistent trolling and vandalism, which led to the need for the lock. I appreciate your opinion regarding reaching consensus about the image. Pyxis Solitary talk 08:34, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

ANI Experiences survey

The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (led by the Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) is conducting a survey for en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Clpo13. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

  Miscellaneous

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Clpo13, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, go here. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:27, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

Guild of Copy Editors December 2017 News

Guild of Copy Editors December 2017 News

Hello copy editors! Welcome to the December 2017 GOCE newsletter, which contains nine months(!) of updates. The Guild has been busy and successful; your diligent efforts in 2017 has brought the backlog of articles requiring copy edit to below 1,000 articles for the first time. Thanks to all editors who have contributed their time and energy to help make this happen.

Our copy-editing drives (month-long backlog-reduction drives held in odd-numbered months) and blitzes (week-long themed editing in even-numbered months) have been very successful this year.

March drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2016 from our backlog and all February 2017 Requests (a total of 304 articles). By the end of the month, all but 22 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 28 who signed up, 22 editors recorded 257 copy edits (439,952 words). (These numbers do not always make sense when you compare them to the overall reduction in the backlog, because not all editors record every copy edit on the drive page.)

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 April; the theme was Requests. Of the 15 who signed up, 9 editors completed 43 articles (81,822 words).

May drive: The goals were to remove July, August, and September 2016 from the backlog and to complete all March 2017 Requests (a total of 300 articles). By the end of the month, we had reduced our overall backlog to an all-time low of 1,388 articles. Of the 28 who signed up, 17 editors completed 187 articles (321,810 words).

June blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 18 through 24 June; the theme was Requests. Of the 16 who signed up, 9 editors completed 28 copy edits (117,089 words).

2017 Coordinator elections: In June, coordinators for the second half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 moved back into the lead coordinator position, with Miniapolis stepping down to remain as coordinator; Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators, and Keira1996 rejoined after an extended absence. Thanks to all who participated!

July drive: We set out to remove August, September, October, and November 2016 from the backlog and to complete all May and June 2017 Requests (a total of 242 articles). The drive was an enormous success, and the target was nearly achieved within three weeks, so that December 2016 was added to the "old articles" list used as a goal for the drive. By the end of the month, only three articles from 2016 remained, and for the second drive in a row, the backlog was reduced to a new all-time low, this time to 1,363 articles. Of the 33 who signed up, 21 editors completed 337 articles (556,482 words).

August blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 20 through 26 August; the theme was biographical articles tagged for copy editing for more than six months (47 articles). Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors completed 38 copy edits (42,589 words).

September drive: The goals were to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all August 2017 Requests (a total of 338 articles). Of the 19 who signed up, 14 editors completed 121 copy edits (267,227 words).

October blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 22 through 28 October; the theme was Requests. Of the 14 who signed up, 8 editors completed 20 articles (55,642 words).

November drive: We set out again to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all October 2017 Requests (a total of 207 articles). By the end of the month, these goals were reached and the backlog shrank to its lowest total ever, 997 articles, the first time it had fallen under one thousand (click on the graph above to see this amazing feat in graphical form). It was also the first time that the oldest copy-edit tag was less than eight months old. Of the 25 who signed up, 16 editors completed 159 articles (285,929 words).

2018 Coordinator elections: Voting is open for the election of coordinators for the first half of 2018. Please visit the election page to vote between now and December 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Thanks for participating!

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before (or after) every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Corinne, Tdslk, and Keira1996.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Clpo13, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Fake News Awards

Could you clarify what source you intended to add here. It's causing a cite error as there isn't a ref name called "wpfact" on the page, and I can't find what it might have referred to looking back through the page history. –72 (talk) 20:49, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

When I copied parts of that passage from the page history, I assumed the ref name hadn't changed, but it looks like it has. I got the information from the Washington Post fact check article used for the other table entries, so that should be used for the source. It looks like it was fixed by StrayBolt already, though. clpo13(talk) 21:58, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Bongomedia

When you soft blocked BongoMedia you may not have realised that as well as the user name violation, this was an undeclared paid editor editing on behalf of a company, which is not permitted. All their articles were directed to promoting the same event. In the circumstances, I've removed the right to article creation so that they don't just create a new account and continue paid spamming without giving undertaking not to make COI edits. See my comment here. I appreciate that I've done this without consulting you, so if you think that my change to the block is inappropriate, feel free to change it back. And thanks to you for handling this. I should have investigated the account's edits more thoroughly when making my initial block. clpo13(talk) 16:54, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Note on recent block

Don't inherently disagree with the block, but fwiw I was writing up a denial for the AIV report on Special:Contributions/73.254.76.249. The IP was progressively warned four times in just 17 seconds by a non-reverting editor, even though it only made a single edit after the initial note. ~ Amory (utc) 19:27, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

I didn't notice how quickly those warnings were posted. I'll give the Huggle reports a little more attention. Thanks for letting me know. clpo13(talk) 19:32, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
No worries — I left a note on the reporting user's page fwiw. ~ Amory (utc) 19:50, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Editor Svcc

You blocked him for 31 hours and his sock (Sv2018) indefinitely but are you aware the other issues with this editor and the article Dave Aronberg? Check out his edits and my talk page here[59]. This editor did one edit to that article while signed out. He is from Palm Beach County Florida where Aronberg is a politician. There are COI issues with this editor too IMHO....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 19:05, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Yes, I'm looking over the situation now. I'm going to let the user know that, once his block expires, he should engage in discussion on the talk page instead of continuing to revert if he has a problem with the article as it currently is. As upsetting as it might be to some people to trim down a politician's biography, we need to be careful to not let such articles turn promotional. clpo13(talk) 19:17, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
He's come back again and reverted[60] the last edit to the page. He didn't take your suggestion to go to the talk page....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 20:44, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
That's disappointing. He hasn't edited since that revert, but I'll try to keep an eye on the article (no guarantees as I'm pretty busy IRL). If he becomes disruptive again, report it at WP:ANI. It'll get handled more quickly there. clpo13(talk) 17:33, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Question about verification

Hi- thanks for your note- I went back in to edit my contribution (adding footnotes) and saw it had been removed. I am citing to original sources rather than to someone talking about the he original sources- but it is not resarch (opinion) but rather observations (direct quote from source and citation to google analytics showing contemporaneous use of a term). The issue is use of the term “throwing shade” which is used in an austen novel well before the uses noted in the current Wikipedia page. The current discussion only shows the more modern usage whereas analtics show it was a phrase used in Austen and contemporaneously. The citations in the current article are essentially traced back to equivalent sources (movie using the phrase and RuPaul using the phrase). Any thoughts on this? New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Clpo13, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!

The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

serial vandal

You recently blocked 96.19.148.120. Coming off the block this user is right back to his vandalism/insertion of unreferenced content. This is tiresome to have to keep reverting all this. And before this IP address, this user was doing the same thing from a different IP address. Help please. Hmains (talk) 03:01, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

@Hmains: since the vandal is using multiple IPs and is active on multiple pages, there's little we can do except impose blocks of escalating length if they continue their behavior. It looks like they've stopped for now, but if they start up again, don't hesitate to report to WP:AIV. They've been warned enough that I don't see any need to keep adding warning templates. clpo13(talk) 20:57, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

Grammy Award winner lists

List of Uruguayan Grammy Award winners and nominees

Is the any reason why this list is being kept - it is a list containing only one artist (the title List of Uruguayan Grammy Award winners and nominees implies that there are multiple winners), as per the general consensus at the AfD lists which have only one artist listed should be deleted. In this case the information clearly already exists at List of awards and nominations received by Jorge Drexler and there is no need for this article to be kept. GOCE February 2018 news

Guild of Copy Editors February 2018 News

Welcome to the February 2018 GOCE newsletter in which you will find Guild updates since the December edition. We got to a great start for the year, holding the backlog at nine months. 100 requests were submitted in the first 6 weeks of the year and were swiftly handled with an average completion time of 9 days.

Coordinator elections: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2018 were elected. Jonesey95 remained as lead coordinator and Corrine, Miniapolis and Tdslk as assistant coordinators. Keira1996 stepped down as assistant coordinator and was replaced by Reidgreg. Thanks to all who participated!

End of year reports were prepared for 2016 and 2017, providing a detailed look at the Guild's long-term progress.

January drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2017 from our backlog and all December 2017 Requests (a total of 275 articles). As with previous years, the January drive was an outstanding success and by the end of the month all but 57 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 38 who signed up, 21 editors recorded 259 copy edits (490,256 words).

February blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 February, focusing on Requests and the last articles tagged in May 2017. At the end of the week there were only 14 pending requests, with none older than 20 days. Of the 11 who signed up, 10 editors completed 35 copy edits (98,538 words).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Corinne, Tdslk, and Reidgreg.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2018).

  Administrator changes

  Lourdes
  AngelOfSadnessBhadaniChris 73CorenFridayMidomMike V
† Lourdes has requested that her admin rights be temporarily removed, pending her return from travel.

  Guideline and policy news

  • The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
  • A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
  • A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

  Technical news

  • CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
  • The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.

  Miscellaneous

  Obituaries

  • Bhadani (Gangadhar Bhadani) passed away on 8 February 2018. Bhadani joined Wikipedia in March 2005 and became an administrator in September 2005. While he was active, Bhadani was regarded as one of the most prolific Wikipedians from India.

Why I reverted someone else's edit to your talk page.

Hello. I reverted an edit that a now-blocked Wikipedia user made to your user talk page, as it looked suspicious. Hope I wasn't overstepping or anything. Cheers. Beauty School Dropout (talk) 00:12, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

@Beauty School Dropout: of course not! Thanks for keeping an eye out. clpo13(talk) 20:57, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Weird

Hi C, I just noticed that you'd recently (Jan 2018) blocked ByronMolina as a suspected sock of Byronmolina87. I too naturally thought they were the same guy after the ByronMolina account was created in March 2017. They had the same name and same interest of Doki (TV series). So at that same time I asked DeltaQuad (who CU blocked the Byronmolina87 account) about it and she said they were unrelated. I'm not suggesting any action be taken on this, because the whole thing is so confusing, but I thought I'd bring this to your attention, whatever it turns out to be.   Regards, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 05:02, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Just noticed the confession. I'm sure the Chilean IPs at Doki are the same kid. 190.* range and 201.* Cyphoidbomb (talk) 05:07, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.
