Suggestion for mergers

Hi Crouch, Swale hope you doing okay...I was thinking I found some more sources to clarify the County Durham (district) article and Shropshire district article needs some more work...I was thinking do you think a merge of the councils into the articles would be a good solution...I think it be a bit like Tamworth and York as the councils are in the article? RailwayJG (talk) 03:03, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

@RailwayJG: Yes I agree merging Shropshire Council with Shropshire (district) and Dorset Council (UK) with Dorset (unitary authority) but I'm less sure of Durham County Council since that article appears to deal with the council prior to the creation of the district in 2009 and deals with the council for the administrative county that previously had several districts though I'm not opposed to merging. Note that its usual for ceremonial counties to have a council article such as Essex v Essex County Council (not covering Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock) and Suffolk v Suffolk County Council (covering all of Suffolk) since there's usually enough material to have separate articles but not with unitary authorities part of a larger ceremonial county. What you could do with the council article for the UAs is tag them with {{Merge to|Shropshire (district) |discuss=[[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography#District merges]] |date=August 2021}} and start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography with a header "District merges". For the record Tamworth, Staffordshire is about the town and district (Borough of Tamworth redirects there) per Talk:Tamworth, Staffordshire#Merger proposal and there is no Tamworth Borough Council article but there is York and City of York Council though York should probably be split. Shaw and Crompton TFA

Hi Crouch, Swale,

I don't have any objection to clarifying the wording of the blurb in this edit of yours, but this is just to let you know that I've removed the boldface styling you added to Shaw and Crompton, since TFA blurbs conventionally don't include any other boldfaced text besides the link to the featured article – I hope this is all right with you. Cheers! — RAVENPVFF · talk · 03:31, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

Kirk & Castle Levingtons

From the fact that they is one website and one counci why is Kirklevington and Castle Levington counted as two parishes on the North Yorkshire Civil Parishes list. They has been history of it being one then split, "Kirklevington and Castle Leavington Parish Council was formed in 1964." this must mean the two merged back together.

Stockton borough council website consistently states "Kirklevington and Castle Leavington Parish Council". Unless they is a line specifically referring to two parishes having one council.

Does Egglescliffe and Eaglescliffe parish as well as Kirklevington and Castle Levington parish need separate articles or just have Eaglescliffe and Kirklevington cover parish content. Note Castle Levington should be styled as two words as that is the official name. Kirklevington is styled as one word. Chocolateediter (talk) 14:34, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

@Chocolateediter: It seems that they are joint parish councils meaning that "Kirklevington and Castle Levington Parish Council" is a council for 2 separate civil parishes, similar to Swilland having Swilland and Witnesham Parish council yet being separate parishes. Both "Kirklevington" and "Castlelevington" and the parish council's website seems to make reference to "Castlelevington Parish Council" alone.
Regarding Egglescliffe/Eaglescliffe, there seems only to be 1 parish called "Egglescliffe" that includes most of "Eaglescliffe", the rest being in Preston-on-Tees. The Egglescliffe & Eaglescliffe Council seems to be the name of the council that runs "Egglescliffe" civil parish.
Although all civil parishes should have an article, joint councils probably shouldn't and the information about the joint council should be added to both of the CP's articles. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:51, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

How often does joint parishes occur, could work as a table for an article.

I guess since "Eaglescliffe" comes from "Egglescliffe", the historic parish never changed its name. Does the parish name mean that the Eaglescliffe article should only focus on the original Eaglescliffe Junction settlement. Should Orchard, Kingsmead and Sunningdale be separate counted as villages or part of Eaglescliffe or Egglescliffe. The area’s geography is confusing enough, it’s like a scaled down and parished version of Greater Eston (atleast it is all called one or the other and not each as a place) while Yarm or Stockton would be like Middlesbrough in this situation. That’s the problem of having a town and borough meaning different things since 1974, areas of housing built without a defined definition as to whether it’s a single settlement or part of other nearby settlements. Urban scrawl is very messy isn’t it. Chocolateediter (talk) 21:39, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Joint parishes occur quite often with smaller CPs, I'm not sure a table would be helpful in an article, just a mention about the joint council.
"Eaglescliffe" and "Egglescliffe" are 2 different places despite the fact that such similarities often are alternative names such as "Wick Rissington" v "Wyck Rissington" but with Eaglescliffe/Egglescliffe they are different. The Egglescliffe should be on the settlement with that name and the parish while Egglescliffe should describe the settlement with that name. Should Orchard, Kingsmead and Sunningdale seem to be non-notable streets or similar so probably don't merit even a mention from what I can see. Crouch, Swale (talk) 22:25, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Just an FYI

I'm working on fixing the incoming links to Rock and Roll Music, so there's no need to do the same to avoid edit-conflicting. The final target should be Rock and roll, not the disambiguation page. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:45, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

@Elli: Thanks but shouldn't Rock and Roll Music redirect to the DAB per WP:DIFFCAPS since Rock and roll isn't a proper noun like Friendly Fire? Nobody other than me and Firefangledfeathers mentioned this and although the nom suggested redirecting to the generic meaning Firefangledfeathers seems to have suggested either. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:57, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
Meh, if you think it's better that's fine I guess. I don't care particularly much. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:58, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
Rock and roll music and Rock and Roll do go to the generic meaning but I think if someone is including "Music" and capitalizing its not unreasonable they are looking for the song and if they want the generic meaning its in bold at the top. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:04, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
Reasonable. Having gone over the incoming links now, I've fixed most of the ones in articles, though some remained ambiguous to me. I think this backs up the choice to move the article and looking at it I can see the value in pointing to the dabpage. Cheers! Elli (talk | contribs) 19:12, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
@Elli: I've read you're closing statement and I've noticed you said in the closing statement that the title will redirect to Rock and roll music that redirects to Rock and roll so I suppose that's what you meant above so feel free to change the redirect there however given my above points it may be better to change the statement to redirect to the DAb instead. Anyway my at least temprory redirecting to the DAB was fine to allow the links to be fixed. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:23, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

Cite Wikipedia template

In response to your summary -- diff -- yesterday, I was thinking about making a cite Wikipedia template. I was worried that it would have been perceived as some kind of a sick meta joke, but it's obviously needed for the purposes of Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia. Do you have any additional thoughts on this? Regards — Alalch Emis (talk) 21:03, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

@Alalch Emis: I'd have similar parameters to the standard {{Cite web}} template but because its going to be the same we wouldn't need as many namely the permanent link parameter which would link to the specified version, the page parameter namely that provides an internal link to the specified page and then the standard retrieved parameter. There may be more but those are the main ones I can think of. IMO this is more useful than linking through a standard wikilink or an EL to the page its self since (1) the page may change and thus the permanent link proves a citation to the version being cited not the current one and (2) proves a compromise between those that feel internal links in such citations are inappropriate self references and those who feel linking as and EL is unnecessary. This template could also be used outside mainspace when discussing pages as well though it would probably not really be nessesarry as a simple link would likely be enough. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:19, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
Yes, this is exactly what I was thinking. I'm starting from a view that without this it'd be hard to significantly improve the topic of Wikipedia's coverage of itself, and that kind of improvement is certainly needed. I'll try to make this template. Pinging @BD2412: Maybe you have some thoughts on this? :) — Alalch Emis (talk) 21:30, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
I'd also say rather than needing to manually add the different links and dates etc it should be possible just to substitute it which would fill in the latest revision link and date as well as today's. Template:Citation needed says its possible to just {{subst:Citation needed}} and that fills in the date but I've never done that before since adding the data alone isn't difficult. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:35, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
I don't see what's wrong with the existing {{cite web}}. BD2412 T 22:11, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
It doesn't give both an internal link to the current page (as is standard to wikilink) and doesn't provide a permanent link to the version cited (unless such as version is given as the URL). The existing cite web template works well for external sites that don't have a permanant link. Crouch, Swale (talk) 22:16, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Your learned opinion

The article Tongwell is (and probably always will be) a tiny stub. The article is entirely unreferenced and, short of maybe citing the address of Mercedes Benz UK HQ, will stay that way. The article claims that it is (or was) a hamlet but there is no trace of such. The oldest map at NLS shows only "Tongwell Farm" to the west of Willen village. My kneejerk reaction is just to redirect it to Great Linford#Civil parish but I thought it best to 'seek advice' first. Off with its head or a stay of execution? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 20:00, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

@John Maynard Friedman: Yes I'd agree, I can't find anything much so per WP:GEOLAND I'd indeed merge with its parish. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:21, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi, as you noticed I created a disambiguation page at Llandough and redirected Donnington, Shropshire to Donnington where both places in Shropshire are mentioned. I've fixed some of the resulting links to these disambiguation pages, but for both there are quite a few remaining where it isn't (immediately) clear from the context which place is meant (for me at least, as a non–English–geography–enthusiast). Could you have a look at these? Lennart97 (talk) 20:16, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

@Lennart97: Thankyou for the moves and disambiguation, I cleaned up those that I could but some weren't clear so I left them or tagged them with {{dn}}. Crouch, Swale (talk)
