Request for Resolution of User Name Issue

edit

Hello, I am having an issue with my user name being in violation of impersonating a notable figure, but I am that person. I have emailed the Volunteer Team for verification of my identity, and have been told by them that this is the correct method for approval. However, I received two previous responses to my request on talk page that I should reach out to the Volunteer team. I am now unsure of the proper course of action and would appreciate some guidance on how to resolve this issue.

Furthermore, I would like to bring to your attention that my email was sent on November 7, 2022 and I received a response only on January 28, 2023, which is more than a year later.

I would like to share that their email response to my request for approval of user name was “Dear Daniel Toben,

Thank you for your email. Please note that queries relating to blocks are not handled by this inbox. However, the below information outlines the process for understanding your block, and then subsequently appealing it if you choose to.…”

Welcome!

edit

Hello, Danieltoben, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you created or edited was Draft:Daniel Toben, which appears to be an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians—as this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. Your user page, however, is a great place to write about yourself, making sure to stay within user page guidelines. Just click your user name at the top of the screen when you are logged in, and edit it normally.

The page you created about yourself may well be deleted from the encyclopedia. If it is deleted and you wish to retrieve its contents, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page. If your contributions to an existing article about yourself are undone and you wish to add to it, please propose the changes on its talk page.

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because the username, Danieltoben, matches the name of a well-known, living person.

If you are the person represented by this username, please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. You may choose to edit under a new username (see information below), but keep in mind that you are welcome to continue to edit under this username.

If you choose to keep your current username, please send an email to info-en wikimedia.org including your real name and your Wikipedia username to receive instructions from our volunteer response team about account verification. Please do not send documentation without being requested to do so.

If you are not the person represented by this username, you are welcome to choose a new username (see below).

A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change of your current account here. The new username that you choose must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.

  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username of this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page here: {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken and in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Appeals: If your username is not in violation of Wikipedia's username policy, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your user talk page here: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Request reason:

Dear Wikipedia Administrators,

I am writing to appeal the procedural block on my Wikipedia account. I understand that my account was blocked for impersonating a notable figure, however, I would like to assure you that I am actually the person in question.

I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience that my account may have caused. I understand the importance of accurate and reliable information on Wikipedia and I assure you that I have only had the intention of contributing to the platform in a positive manner.

I reached out to the Volunteer Response Team through email as instructed, but I received an email suggesting that I should reach out to the administrators through commenting on my talk page. I kindly request that an administrator sees this message and unblocks my account.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, Daniel Toben

Unblocked

edit

Hi, Danieltoben,

In light of recent correspondence with VRT (convenience link for agents), I have unblocked your account. Please understand that this does not change the guidance you were given previously about conflicts of interest and autobiographies; it merely reflects that the stated reason for the block (potential impersonation) has been resolved.

Happy editing, and my apologies again for the delay in resolving this. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 02:52, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
