One thing you have to keep in mind: you are not necessarily writing for an audience of believers. It is fundamental and required that you describe the subject in neutral and objective terms that everyone, believer or non, would agree with. Not everyone would agree that he was "great" or a "sage", but if he is, say, "a scholar of X school of Hinduism who published the book Y", those basic facts are indisputable. In order to publish the article on Wikipedia, it must be framed in netural terms that neither glorify nor denigrate, but dispassionately lay out the details of his life and works. If the article reads like a religious text, a legend, or an obituary, it simply cannot be published. Your current intro:" Swami Sri Gnanananda Giri is Mahayogi, Great Siddha Purusha and Himalayan Sage. Great Gnanis are not born for death. "I will be in Jiva Samadhi", he assured his devotees. "I will raise you up. protect you and watch over you" tells me exactly nothing about who he was, where/when he operated, and what his larger importance to the history of India, Hinduism, religious studies, etc. were. Do you follow my point about neutrality, and being directed at a wider audience rather than simply his supporters? MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:40, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Honorifics, footnoting, etc

On your yogi article, I have removed the various "Sri"s except when they are specifically part of the titles of other articles. Per WP custom, after being introduced subjects are referred to by the simplest version of their name; for Westerners, this is generally by their last name. So I have removed these honorifics and a few other terms that were not neutral in nature. Note also that "left his earthly body", "passed away", "met his maker" are not WP style, per WP:Euphemism. Instead we say "died", and if a given belief system believes otherwise, we note "although according to his followers he achieved samadhi/ arose to heaven/ is asleep in a cave," etc. Speaking of which, in what year was Gnanananda born, and is he still alive? In any case, your article is currently "unreferenced", so I suggest you go to GoogleBooks, or to whatever collection of physical books that discuss him that you have, in order to add WP:Footnotes to the article. There are quite a few books covering Gnanananda on GoogleBooks: note this search, http://www.google.com/search?q=Gnanananda&btnG=Search+Books&tbm=bks&tbo=1 . If you find any material you like, you can automatically footnote it using http://reftag.appspot.com . Again, you really do need to add such footnotes prior to publishing the article, so I would focus on footnotes first, as it does no good to add content if you cannot cite it to a reliable source. Looking a lot better; nice work on the clarifications, though you do need to explain still what the "6th lineage" is. Also, recommend you put his birth date and location into parentheses next to his name in the lede (note any other biography article for format). Your footnote to The Hindu is well-chosen, but recommend you format it per WP:Citations, that is, include the title of the article (linked to the web address), then "The Hindu", then the date of publication. That way one can tell at a glance what the article was entitled, what paper, and when. Suggest you continue to find such quality references, either from newspapers or from the GoogleBooks I linked above. The more properly-footnoted an article is, the more credible, professional, and complete it is. After all, if you were a reader wishing to know more about Gnanananda, you would want to know that the information came from credible sources, yes? That's the beauty of footnotes. Please also recall to add WP:Categories, suggest you find a good biography of another Hindu guru and take inspiration from the categories applied there. Feel free to write with any questions. You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve.
