Mobygames

Hi! Just noticed the undone revisions on my uploads of cover arts and came to this talk page. I didn't know MobyGames cover art was unofficial; sorry to cause trouble in your notifications. I thought MobyGames pulled official art from store icons and uploaded it to their service. Is this not the case? How is their art unofficial? Venky64 (talk) 16:02, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi, so there are a couple of issues here.

First and foremost, MobyGames isn't a reliable source for most things on Wikipedia because their content is user-generated. In other words, anyone on the Internet could upload pretty much anything to MobyGames and there's no checking on MobyGames' part that anything that is being uploaded is correct. That goes for cover images as well as I've definitely seen ones on MobyGames that are wrong/fake. Check out this list of reliable vs. unreliable sources that's been established by the community.

Second, the images you were replacing came directly from each of the games' respective Steam pages. These are official images that the game developers use as the cover art for the game. So it's not clear why they should ever be replaced unless there's some compelling reason to do so. If you really think images like these should be changed, you should explain why you're doing it in your edit summary so that other editors can understand what you're doing. Note that even if you think there's a good reason, you're probably still going to need to discuss it with other editors who may feel strongly that the current image is acceptable.
