Please remember to:

  • Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the   button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your signature, a link to your talk page, and a timestamp.
  • Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Ankita Shorey, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page JMC. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Tag bombing at Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute

Hi! I don't know if you know this, but tagbombing (adding lots of cleanup tags, both at the top and inline) is generally not very liked or useful. If it pervades in the entire article, usually only notices at the top or in a specific section are necessary. I hope this helped! :) Sennecaster (What now?) 01:32, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for the feedback! I'll use more of the top cleanup tags from now on. (FYI, I am fairly conservative about what kind of stuff here needs cleanup, which is why I tend to insert more cleanup tags wherever I go.) Duckmather (talk) 20:04, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello Duckmather! Your additions to SS City of Johannesburg have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 14:39, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the copyright notice, Diannaa! I'll be much more careful about using copyrighted content in the future. Duckmather (talk) 21:00, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

July 2021

Hello, I'm David Gerard. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. None of crypto sites, crypto site reprints, promotional sites, personal blogs, or Forbes contributor blogs are Reliable Sources for Wikipedia - David Gerard (talk) 09:36, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Bad referencing in books

A book cannot be a reference in an article about itself. References must be about the subject, and except in very rare cases a book is not about itself. Please stop adding references to books in articles about those same books.

Additionally, you have been repeatedly violating WP:CITEVAR, which says not to change the established style of referencing in an article. In an article that uses Citation Style 2 (the {{citation}} template), you should not be using Citation Style 1 (the {{cite}} line of templates). And in an article using list-defined referencing (all references named at the end of the article inside the {{reflist}} template, sometimes used in conjunction with the {{r}} template to refer to later named templates) you should not be placing the references inline, in the text of the article. You have been repeatedly doing this despite my previous notifications in edit messages that you should stop. Do you want me to start mass-rollbacking your edits? Pay attention and do better. —David Eppstein (talk) 21:06, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

In addition, your edits at Combinatorial Geometry in the Plane show that you did not even make the most cursory attempt to look at the sources that were already present in the article. If you had looked at them, you would have noticed that the supposed 1950 publication date was a typo, instead of tagging it as contradictory and yet propagating the same information into the infobox you created, without checking it for correctness. —David Eppstein (talk) 23:10, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

Startups in Odisha moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Startups in Odisha, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). Speedy deletion nomination of Calaxy

Cryptocurrency/blockchain standard notice

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Due to past disruption in this topic area, the community has enacted a more stringent set of rules. Any administrator may impose sanctions—such as editing restrictions, bans, or blocks—on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on these sanctions. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Signpost interview request - Random Page Patrol

Hello! I'm writing an article for The Signpost about the Random Page Patrol wikiproject. We often do interviews with Wikiproject members, and I saw your name on the list of members. As a newer member, I'd love to ask about the project, why you do it, and why you think it's valuable. I could drop a few questions for you below which you could answer in your own time over the next couple of weeks. Let me know - thank you! Ganesha811 (talk) 19:21, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the request! It'd be great for you to ask me some questions about this. (I'm somewhat new to the entire enterprise of writing an encyclopedia anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.)
As for the questions you've already asked: I participate in the project because I find it a great way to find stuff to write about. (As you may have already noticed, I *do* have a marked interest in mathematics and computer science, but I often find it edifying to write about other topics.) Also, I think that the project is valuable because it brings attention to articles that lack it. Duckmather (talk) 00:56, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
