That brachiopod article! Somalirhynchia africana

Hi again Dwergenpaartje, I just wanted to say how much we appreciate your making the article on Somalirhynchia africana. I was especially impressed to see so many inline citations! I tweaked the article a little bit and put a bunch of links in it. I am part of the Wikipedia gastropod project; maybe we will be lucky and you will make a fossil gastropod article some time!

Actually, in case you are interested, there is a Paleontology Project on Wikipedia; their project page is here.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. All best wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 21:49, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words. I have been uploading a lot of photos these last few weeks, as not many decent photo series of fossils have been contributed so far. To be able to make a wikipedia article seems to be sheer luck though. Almost never is the literature available for free, and to pay 30 USD or so to Elsevier to get a species description is too much to ask of a goodwilling hobbyist like me. But if I can, I will make other pages. In fact, I did make another page that you may wish to have a look at my article on Musculus_somaliensis. Kind regards, Ronald — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.10.33.119 (talk) 17:02, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

In Response

After your message, I removed "very" so that it's just "small."--Mr Fink (talk) 23:42, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Also, I had a thought, would it be appropriate to say Ductina were "relatively small" trilobites?--Mr Fink (talk) 23:46, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Cool! A bivalve article: Dacryomya

Hello again Dwergenpaartje! I was happy to see that you made this very nice fossil bivalve article. We just created a WikiProject Bivalves a few weeks ago (January 1st of this year). Maybe you would be interested in joining?

 Wikiproject Bivalves
I've noticed your edits on pages relating to Bivalves; perhaps you'd be interested in joining WikiProject Bivalves.
If you would like more information, please visit the project page.

You are also eligible to be part of WikiProject Paleontology of course or any other project you fancy! All good wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 22:13, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Dwergenpaartje for the well-thought-out reply which you left on my talk page. I suppose that the main reason to join any Project on Wikipedia is to be able to work alongside of other people who are interested in contributing to the same subject areas as you are. It can be inspiring to see what others are doing. Plus I guess you would be able to give input into how the coverage of this subject area is managed in the encyclopedia as a whole. And then there's the whole team spirit thing, which some people enjoy.

To address your more specific questions, I do understand your ambivalence. I hope you don't mind, but I am copying your letter onto the Bivalve Project talk page so that others can think about the issues you raised and give some input.

Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 21:40, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dwergenpaartje! I too was educated as a biologist, although I now work in another career entirely. I really liked your article and think that you have a lot to contribute if you choose to do so. The whole idea for WikiProject Bivalves came up in early January this year, precisely because some of the editors in WikiProject Gastropods were having a discussion about mollusks. I am a new editor on Wikipedia, and although I am not a "joiner" of clubs or groups I decided to "give it a go" here. I agree with Invertzoo's comment that it can give you kind of a sense of community. I find it nice to have like minded people to discuss these topics with. My wife, kids, and most all of my friends, really have no interest in mollusks - and I often feel that I am boring them when I bring up the subject. Wikipedia and its project groups provide a place where we can revel in our interests and share them with others who have similar interests. Go read some of the discussions on the project pages. There are quite a few editors out there who are willing to mentor and help if you want or need it. I have come a long way in just four months, thanks to the interest and help from three or four more senior (in time) Wikipedia editors. I hope you continue to enjoy it. Shellnut (talk) 23:56, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Extinct species articles

I see you are starting to create articles for the images you are uploading to commons. I would note that the most specific article that generally should be created for extinct taxa are genus level articles. This is per the WikiProject Paleontology guidelines for extinct taxa which note the fluidity of species designations in fossil taxa and the usually very small details on which separate species are erected, which results in species articles which large amount of duplication between related taxa and the genus they belong to.--Kevmin § 21:43, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

I understand the consideration behind the guidelines, and would be glad to comply, but the literature to make informative articles is seldomly freely available. Sometimes I stumble upon free access literature on a species and then I use it. It is often not possible to make articles on genera because I do not have all species in my collection or described in the literature. You may note the articles I developed from the most lean type of stub to something worth reading (or so I hope). To show you I try to do what the rule says, you may want to look at the articles on Ductina (2 species) and Morocconites (monotypical). I am slowly working my way through Phacops s.l. but I still need a lot more specific information. So when I can, I will try to create genus level articles. I hope you can live with this. Dwergenpaartje (talk) 18:55, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
If you only are able to get information on certain species, then create a genus stub article with that specific information, other editors will be able to expand upon the article in the future.--Kevmin § 20:15, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
I am a visual person and like to "see" things that I am working on. Taxonomy is one of those things I like to try to visualize. If you think of the Bivalvia taxonomy as a tree and the species articles on it as terminal branches then it is easy to visualize what Kevmin is saying about having a "stub" genus article to hang the species article on. The Bivalvia coverage on Wikipedia was sorely in need of help and a small group of us "like minded" biologists/shell people decided to dig in and try to make it better. I did some research on higher level taxonomy and did what I could to update the major articles for higher taxa, and Kevmin and a number of other editors have been busy fixing up genera and species articles. Whatever information and knowledge base you have and are willing to add to Wikipedia will help flesh out this area. Bivalves (extant and extinct species) just do not seem to attract as much interest as Gastropods, and therefore are often neglected. Shellnut (talk) 00:16, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Naraoia, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Pridoli (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Concerning Buenaspis

I understand: It's an old picture, and I've been meaning to update it (along with Kleptothule). Do you happen to have any good references of either critter available?--Mr Fink (talk) 14:24, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Redirect instead of piping monotypic taxa

Instead of creating piped links to make red links blue in individual articles, again please just create redirects from the species name to the genus page if the genus is monospecific.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 01:02, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Re: editing the key to the species

Hello Dwergenpaartje, and thank you for your message. Am I correct in assuming that it's a numbered list you are trying to achieve in this section?  -- WikHead (talk) 08:18, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello Wikhead, and thank you for the lightning speed answer. No, it is not a numbered list I try to achieve. A key consists of numbered pairs of contrasting statements that lead to the identification of a taxon or to a following pair of constrasting statements. I would like it to look like this.
1 animal with scales (at least on the feet) → 2
- animal without scales → mammal
2 animal with feathers → bird
- animal without feathers → reptile
I can do it in this example by using spaces, but if I need more lines it becomes very messy.

Thanks for the advice. Dwergenpaartje (talk) 08:33, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps a <br> line-break tag at the end of the line might help... something like this:
1 animal with scales (at least on the feet) → 2
- animal without scales → mammal
2 animal with feathers → bird
- animal without feathers → reptile
Does that help your efforts any?  -- WikHead (talk) 08:44, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. It may help a bit, but not fundamentally. What I really want is the text to line out on the left, while still having a number or hyphen further to the left on the hight of the top line of the text. Perhaps something with a table with invisible lines? Regards, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 08:55, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
If a borderless table would work, I might suggest taking a look at Help:Table to assist with further planning. I might also suggest trying to find one of these keys in a similar article to see how it's done elsewhere. It's quite possible that a template might exist that makes this an easy task. Nonetheless, I wish you the best of luck with it, and welcome additional questions if you happen to get stuck along the way. Happy editing! :)  -- WikHead (talk) 09:14, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

I followed your advice to use a borderless table. It was not too easy, but in the end, I was content with the result. See Ductina and Naraoia. Thank you for that.

Something I think is not ideal is that the space between lines is different if there is a superscript (for an inline citation). I presume that cannot be helped? Kind Regards, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 23:47, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Concerning Pseudonaraoia

From what I've seen of Pseudonaraoia convinces me that it's a legitimate fossil (given as how it's reported in both the Czech Republic and Chengjiang), so I think we should mention it in Naraoiidae. I haven't read anything questioning its identity, though, so, just to be safe, perhaps we should ask about it in the Paleontology Project, too.--Mr Fink (talk) 14:51, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Tobias, Thanks for the compliment. Your topic however is much more difficult than mine, and I have to complement you on the GBSP article. I constantly run into inconsistencies in the stratigraphy and the ages given when I am working on trilobite articles, and I think it would be very helpful to get some guidance on corresponding strata and one age for each. You may wish to look at the article on Trilobite zones, that I have extended, but I guess most of the article would benefit from some attention by a specialist like you.

Back to your request. The only index fossil I can promise to make an article on is Lotagnostus americanus. There is a fine free access stratigraphical article (Nadezhda P. Lazarenko et al. (2011). The Khos-Nelege River section of the Ogon’or Formation: a potential candidate for the GSSP of Stage 10, Cambrian System. Bulletin of Geosciences 86(3):555–568) and a taxonomic article (Westrop S.R., Adrain J.M. (2011) The Cambrian (Sunwaptan, Furongian) agnostoid arthropod Lotagnostus Whitehouse, 1936, in Laurentian and Avalonian North America: systematics and biostratigraphic significance. Bulletin of Geosciences 86(3):569-594), that I hope will be available to me through WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request. I'm sure I can come up with a drawing as well. Let's talk again after the creation of this Lotagnostus article. - Dwergenpaartje (talk) 15:34, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

One fossil less to worry about is great news. I have also edited the Trilobite zone article once or twice. Its on my summer to-do list :). --Tobias1984 (talk) 16:06, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Lotagnostus, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Polymorph (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Phenotype

Two different phenotypes: seed color and seed form, for example. Dimorphism: either green seeds or yellow ones (or smooth or wrinkled seed). polymorphism is used if more than two morphs exist. So your definition is still not correct: in any population, hundreds of different phenotypes exist (body weight, body length, hair color, etc etc)... We only speak of di-/polymorphisms if the population distribution for a particular phenotype shows non-overlapping sub-groups. Hope this helps. --Randykitty (talk) 18:25, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. I think either of us may be mixing up things. The first sentence of the phenotype article starts A phenotype (from Greek phainein, 'to show' + typos, 'type') is the composite of an organism's observable characteristics or traits, such as its morphology, .... In your explanation above, you seem to suggest that di- or polymorphic can only be used specifically for one characteristic (implying it has two or more distict states).
I actually do not want to enter into a discussion on definitions. The reason I made the edit lies in the work I'm doing with the article on Lotagnostus. The First appearance datum of the species L. americanus has been proposed as the lower limit of Cambrian Stage 10. The cited article says that before it was understood that L. americanus is a polymorphic species. The authors however revised part of Lotagnostus and found through analysing more specimens that what first had seemed to be the chance variability of the few specimens available earlier from different locations (on different paleocontinents), in fact were several less divers species, and L. americanus only appears at the type locality.
I wanted to create links for scientific terms, and polymorph redirected to phenotype. The sentence I inserted the second time around, is in fact identical to the first sentence in the polymorphism article, so I think it was reasonable to assume it would be correct. If you think it is not, you may wish to edit that article. Another article you may wish to edit is the lemma on polymorphism on Wiktionary. Am I making sense? Cyclopygidae

  Resolved

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Cyclopygidae, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: cyclopygidae. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. MadmanBot (talk) 19:32, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for creating Pliomera, Dwergenpaartje!

Not gonna lie, I went to the article to tag it as a hoax because, in the curator summary, I read 'trilobites' as 'tribbles'. Ishdarian 14:33, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Balcoracania

Dwergenpaartje, I'm sorry but I had to remove your information on the lengths of Balcoracania. Measurements by yourself constitute original research and are not allowed on Wikipedia. If you can find a reliable source for the information, you are welcome to restore it. RockMagnetist (talk) 16:04, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

I guess you are right. My point of departure for the articles I edit is the usefullness for readers. I habitually check the literature against my own collection and that of others. I'm sure the size of Balcoracania is not directly in de literature, but perhaps I could do something with the photo's and size indicators. Dwergenpaartje (talk) 11:55, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
This might be a candidate for "Ignore all rules" (a policy that should be used sparingly). It's a pretty minor bit of original research; and if you have reason to think the size isn't in the literature, then it makes sense to include your measurement. As long as no one challenges its accuracy, it is likely to remain there. RockMagnetist (talk) 15:33, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Alternatively, a photo with a visible scale included would be exempt from wp:NOR.LeadSongDog come howl! 04:29, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Is B. dailyi the only species of the genus Balcoracania? If not, I would think that the Balcoracania and the B. dailyi pages should be separate. PAR (talk) 03:17, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Yes, B. dailyi is the only species in this genus. Alternatively, I would like to quote a respons by User:Kevmin (see higher up my talk page), who commented on a species level article I had created: "I see you are starting to create articles for the images you are uploading to commons. I would note that the most specific article that generally should be created for extinct taxa are genus level articles. This is per the WikiProject Paleontology guidelines for extinct taxa which note the fluidity of species designations in fossil taxa and the usually very small details on which separate species are erected, which results in species articles which large amount of duplication between related taxa and the genus they belong to". Hope this helps, --Dwergenpaartje (talk) 10:55, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
