Re:Sound recording

I just noticed your addition of a sound recording to Curlew River. Copyright is complicated, and I don't claim to understand it completely, but I have two concerns - firstly, I think the excerpt might be a bit long to be fair use, but I might be making that up. Secondly, it is unclear what specifically it is illustrating. In order for its use to be "fair use" I think you need to describe the excerpt specifically, and show how it illustrates a concept. So, for instance, you could talk about the use of the flute and how it represents the Madwoman in this instance? Note that I haven't been brave enough to upload any fair-use music :-) Also, when you have only one item, you can just use the Template:Listen (I've already changed the template). Thanks for your feedback--I was a little worried about the same things. I think/hope that the length is okay because it's not a complete track (the only concrete guideline wikipedia gives), and because the quality is a lot lower than on the cd. That's my story, anyway.

I know I'm lazy to upload it without incorporating it into the text, but I wasn't sure the upload would work. I'll certainly type up a little paragraph about it.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Thanks a lot for all your work on this article. It was my first article and I made a whole load of newbie mistakes on it and because it's quite obscure no one was there to clean it up. You've made it look a lot better and have added some good stuff too it, so thanks. You seem to be doing a lot of Britten stuff, so keep up all the great work. Thanks! I don't really have any qualifications, but I do want to make a project out of the Britten. There's a used copy of Peter Evans' book I've got my eye on to steal some quotes. It'd be nice to have a little musical analysis of the bigger works.

lower-case initials

• That category has existed for quite some time; Wikipedia recognizes that some articles should begin with a lower-case letter, but for technical reasons all must start with a capital letter. Albert Herring

Hi - I didn't see the discussion you refer to, but curious as to why you have deleted paragraph about Spenser? Tony 22:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Tony

I just don't think the friendship with Spenser is notable in terms of the work. Harry is a minor character and the role wasn't written for him the way (for example) Lucretia was written for Kathleen Ferrier or Oberon for Alfred Deller. Seemed weird to have a whole paragraph about some random kid when we don't discuss the ongoing relationship with Joan Cross or even Peter in the article.

You'll notice I also cut John Newton from the Curlew River page (sorry--I did give notice and wait a day for response). In that case, Newton didn't even originate the role, he was one of many boys who sang it. I left the note about David Hemmings on the Screw page, because in that case the detail did seem important to the meaning of the work.

Thanks for the article on the book--it's the first I've heard of it.

Attractive?

Hello - me again. If you read Britten's Children, it is very clear that all the boys Britten befriended were attractive. It is, I believe, an important aspect of Britten's make up. Tony 22:58, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Tony

Well, I haven't read the new book, but I have seen photos of some of the boys he took under his wing in Humphrey Carpenter's biography. Most seemed to be quite ordinary, skinny little kids. Of course Britten was attractED, but he had his own reasons for that, and I don't think they had to do with beauty.

ps You're right about Tadzio being a Dancer. I never quite understood why Britten made the boy older i.e. 15, particularly as the original Tadzio that Thomas Mann fell for was 11/12 and yet he was older in the novella (13/14?). Death in Venice isn't one of my favourite's actually, may be because the book and Visconti's film had etched themselves into my brain. On the other hand The Turn of the Screw is brilliant and definitely adds something to Henry James' work. Tony 23:04, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Tony

I would probably just say journalist. But I understand he is also a visual artist--the magazine he put out for a few years (which I never saw) was of graphic arts as well as fiction, and directed the illustrations for his first two books. That might be more significant.

Does the ongoing fair-use purge actually conform to the fair-use policy?

I'm thinking no. The policy says:

"If unfree material can be transformed into free material, it should be done instead of using a "fair use" defense. [...] Neither photographs nor sound clips, however, can usually be "transformed" in this way. However, if the subject of the photograph still exists, a freely-licensed photograph could be taken.

So, must fair-use images be replaced if their subject is still alive? The policy immediately goes on to moderate this requirement:

"Always use a more free alternative if one is available. If you see a fair use image and know of an alternative more free equivalent, please replace it."

So, the policy does not require deletion of images where no free alternative is available. Replacing fair-use images with free ones is a worthy goal. Deleting fair-use images and leaving a blank is not,

I never made any such assumption. I was referring to a host of specific media organizations, all of which were white-owned, all of which sought to shield the victim from publicity, and which were where perhaps 95 percent of white New Yorkers (excepting those involved in, or friends or relations with people in the media, law enforcement, or politics) got their news on the case (all local TV news operations, CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox' national news operations, CNN, Fox News, New York news radio, the New York Times, Daily News, New York Post, New York Newsday and even the radical leftwing Village Voice). 70.23.199.239 22:46, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Are those media organizations "white-owned"? Why do you think so? I became interested in the case through Joan Didion's essay "Sentimental Journeys" which focuses on the role of race in the way the case was reported and discussed. Glancing through the essay, I see that Didion writes: "one of the problems with not naming this victim: she was in fact named all the time. [...] she was named, in the days immediately following the attack, on some local television stations."

I'll add the bit about the TV stations (which Didion, annoyingly, doesn't list) to the article.

Your recent edit of another's post is unacceptable. I've let your other personal attacks and incivility go. Keep this up and I will ask for others to step in. I am trying to make Betacommand, Durin, and now apparently you aware that you have created an atmosphere of incivility on Wikipedia. That you are blind to this makes me sad for you and sad for Wikipedia.

I do think that Betacommands actions are, in themselves, inappropriate. The guideline he is crusading for is redundant and unnecessary. Applying it in any way would be disruptive to Wikipedia.

However. His aggression and high-handedness, and the fact that he is making threats of deletion against good faith editors when the guideline he is basing his threats on doesn't even have consensus yet, and is still under discussion, mean that an obnoxious editing style greatly compounds the problem that misguided administration creates. I've noticed you've said something like this a few times on a few different talk pages. I thought you should know that you are actually incorrect. The fair use rationale requirement was a part of policy long before WP:FURG even existed. Not really! I of course don't think that coverage of any notable topic is off-limits, but I think your entire redefinition project is POV, and I think you know quite well that it is. However, I don't have the energy to argue about it, or to do extensive fact-checking on a subject I find depressing. So, basically, I'm not real happy, but I'm never going to do anything substantive about it, and you have little need to engage me in debate. I make a real effort to question everything I do, and to be as objective as I can. My view is that pederasty is a neutral topic, with positive and negative aspects. It also happens to be integrated into the gay scene in Europe, where older adolescents are legally empowered to give consent to love relationships with adult partners. And it also happens to be the only real foothold homosexuality has in the domains of history, culture and philosophy, if you exclude the 20th and the 21st centuries. So I would like you to consider the possibility that you are doing a real disfavor to the LGBT sphere in Wikipedia by trying to drive a wedge between pederasty and modern androphilia (and may I say, an androphilia possessed of a queer fascination with depilated bodies and with guys calling each other "boy," and with "just legal" type porno). I see you reverted the stub. I'm curious about the logic or this. Oratorios etc are usually listed as compositions - under the scope of Classical Music, rather than the Opera project. It's not that important but it affects bot runs. -- Kleinzach 04:04, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I just thought the opera stub would better help the article make its way to the right editors - which I understand as the point of stub categories. The stub does say "or opera-related subject" and it's as a source of arias in the operas that the cantata is most notable.

It's not a big deal. "Composition" sounds okay, but again, stubs on vocal music seem more likely to receive informed attention from editors focused on opera than writers on classical music in general. Dybryd 04:10, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Homosexuality

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Homosexuality. Conversion therapy / reparative therapy

Dybryd, on the Homosexuality article recently you changed reparative therapy to conversion therapy. I consider that a mistake, and I changed it back (you wrote in the edit summary, 'changing "reparative" -> "conversion" to match conversion therapy', but this is definitely not a good reason). I'm not quite sure about NARTH, but there's no evidence Exodus International advocates any kind of therapy except reparative therapy specifically. You might want to either seek a third opinion before reverting my changes, or else suggest some sort of compromise as an alternative, because I consider the wording you used to be quite misleading. Okay, I don't really care, but in that section, "reparative therapy" seems to be being used as a general term meaning "therapy to alter homosexual orientation" -- with no mention of the theory of reparative drives -- even though the two examples given are organizations that practice reparative therapy specifically, I think they're just used because they're prominent. So it seems to me that using "reparative" here gives the impression that it's a generic term.

But, I haven't really been part of this ongoing dispute -- so go with whatever the consensus has been.

A note -- you say you're not sure about NARTH. I've just been to their website, and their president is Joseph Nicolosi, who does indeed describe homosexuality in the terms of reparative therapy, and that outlook is all over their website even in articles where the word "reparative" is not used. I am not saying that the wording I used was perfect. Exactly what wording should be used can be debated. Perhaps the simplest and least controversial option would be to say that these groups advocate therapy to change sexual orientation without using either conversion or reparative. I know things can sometimes become heated on debates here. I just wanted to let you know that on my side, its not personal, though I may have come across as agressive, at times. I'm just suffering from general stress, though that shouldn't affect my civility. If I ever came across as bitey to you, my apologies. I hope that as our collaborative efforts on LGBT proceed, we'll come to know one another much better. You seem a solid, good-faith editor, which is a valuable asset here. By the way, my favorite Didion book is Play It As It Lays, though I am now putting myself through the painful; process of re-reading A Year Of Magical Thinking. Conversion therapy article

Dybryd, you recently suggested shortening the conversion therapy article by moving parts of it to the ex-gay article. Like many people, I thought that this was a good idea, but it didn't happen, perhaps because the conversion therapy article was protected. It has been unprotected now, so I think this would be a good moment to carry out your suggestion (I recently undid an edit that did the exact opposite of what you suggested, shifting even more material into that already too long article). On a related note: please archive some of the past discussions on the talk page, because that's also much too long. I'd do it myself, but I'm not quite proficient enough. Template:Sexual orientation

I noticed you removed the autosexual and zoosexual but not the "Related articles: Paraphilia" section. I wanted to clarify whether that was your intent or not, because without zoosexuality I don't think it is clear how paraphilia relates to sexual orientation. Certainly, they both involve sexual attraction, but otherwise they seem completely disjoint. I am going to be bold and remove it, although I am little hestitant because of the recently contentious nature of the template. Queerudite (talk) 03:57, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

I made only those changes that just about everybody had endorsed.

However, it's actually me who added paraphilia -- you'll see my rationale if you look over the talk page. Basically, a number of things that are asserted by their advocates to be sexual orientations are categorized by others as paraphilias -- so the two terms have sometimes been alternative ways of describing the same things.

But I'm not wedded to the addition at all -- especially not since after I added it, it was split off by itself into its own lonely category. The only thing I'm really set on for the template is that I think the neologisms should go.

What do you think about "pansexuality"? I've left it for now, although it's also a neologism, because it's one that seems to have somewhat broader use, and because like the other orientations it refers to the desired gender(s).

WP:TABOO

In general, I'm hesitant about something that suggests we need a special way of approaching articles on taboo subjects. The problem is not that different standards are needed, but simply that the ordinary standards too often fall by the wayside.

Of course, the POV creep in these articles is very clear, and I've appreciated your efforts to point that out in the recent pederasty discussion. But I'm not sure we need an essay that specially opposes POV creep just because it's happening on taboo sexual topics -- I think that sends the wrong message, because "taboo" is itself a POV word.

Just being as clear and factual and by-the-book as possible, and pointing out (again and again if necessary) subjective or biased language on the part of the advocates is, I think, the most effective way.
