Voice Feminization describes the methods, usually used by transwomen, to aquire a female-sounding voice. While hormone replacement therapy and gender reassignment surgery can cause a more feminine outward appearance, they do little to alter the pitch or sound of the voice or change the existing vocal structure. Transwoman often find this to be one of the most challenging aspects of transitioning. Some transwomen seek professional help from speech therapists that work with the individuals voice production and help to retrain the voice.

However, this procedure carries the risk of impairing a trans woman's voice forever, as happened to transsexual economist and author Deirdre McCloskey. Because estrogens by themselves are not able to alter a persons voice range or pitch, some people proceed to seek treatment. Other options are available to people wishing to speak in a less masculine tone. Voice lessons are available to train the MTF to practice feminization of their speech.
