I agree he's borderline as far as current Wikipedia standards for authors and scholars, but I think an Ignore All the Rules inclusion might be warranted. His book on African American legislators in Alabama during Reconstruction moved the ball, made some waves, and garnered him quite a bit of attention. Hopefully someone can turn up some reviews and get him across the finish line. It's subject matter that's worth including and he did noteworthy research work. Category

So I just discovered that there is a category for African-American state legislators: Category:African-American state legislators in (insert state). For example, your recent Alabama bios should be in the category Category:African-American state legislators in Alabama. You may want to consider going back and adding them to this category using HotCat. Curbon7 (talk) 03:18, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

User:Curbon7, one issue we face is how to deal with legislators innthe years after Reconstruction. Are we still categorizing them as Reconstruxtion era? Is any year too long after the end of Reconstruction to be included? Is 1876 a hard cutoff or soft? 1883? 1890? This is not a big issue for Alabama as, at least fo the legislature, only 2 were elected in 1878 and after that none. But other states continued to habe legislators for some years after 1876. Politicians

Hey, I'll accept the politician stubs you have if you can show me a source that verifies they served in the legislature. (Something from the state legislature archives works) AfC reviewers get our asses chewed out by New Page Patrollers and Deletion folks all the time for letting things through before later finding out they were hoaxes or claims were unverified. Here's a source I found from the Florida Legislature. Bkissin (talk) 14:30, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

User:Bkissin appreciate your generous offer. Keep in mind that for the Reconstruction era there were often disputes over elections and many elected representatives were removed from office or prevented from serving in office. There seem to be some definitive books, at least for most of the Southern states, and I would think those should suffice. More recently, state legislaturea have taken to honoring the African Americans who served and have published lists. Other editors have made clear multiple sources are needed. It's always a crapshoot with AfC. Not trying to look a gift horse in the mouth, as the saying goes. Fortunately, most of the legislature submissions have been successful of late. I always try to include at least a few refs but for some of the individuals there isn't an awful lot I find off the bat. Pinning down various spellings and abbreviations of their names (common in the 19th century) also complicates.matters. Again, I appreciate your generous offer an am trying to include as many as I can with some details and references as best I can. FloridaArmy (talk) 15:20, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, for many of your South Carolina stubs I went with the motion to honor black legislators, so that'll be fine. Find what you can on this topic and leave a comment on the talk page if you run into any issues. Bkissin (talk) 15:28, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Great, thanks User:Bkissin. Unfortunately for South Carolina the standard text coverinf these individuals is South Carolina Negro Legislators: a Glorious Success: State and Local Officeholders; Biographies of Negro Representatives, 1868-1902 by Lawrence Chesterfield Bryant, South Carolina State College, 1974 which is out of print, only showing snippets on Google Books, and somewhat hard to come by (not widely held and not inexpensive when it can be found at online sellers). Perhaps I'll splurged. I try not to rely too heavily on the standard texts because it seems a bit unfair to use the bits these scholars found on each of these legislators. I do my best. FloridaArmy (talk) 15:35, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
And don't get me wrong, the standard texts are fine, but it just gives the case more gravitas if it can be confirmed from the source. Sourcing is the major issue with a lot of these systemic bias topics. I remember somebody submitting an article to AfC about a castle where the actual article mentioned that its location was unknown and there wasn't a lot written about it. Since Wikipedia relies on subjects having quality stuff written about them, especially stuff that can be verified (not just "my buddy Tom said that he saw a commercial for it once") these articles often fail review. Unfortunately, this also hits articles like yours. When elected politicians are effectively erased out of history, how can you find the sources to show they existed and that they were relevant, especially when we are dealing with people who lived 150 years ago and didn't have the same kind of media-heavy coverage that we have today? Reviewers are trying to straddle that line, where we are letting in articles about notable people, but keeping out articles about places and subjects unknown.
