How does one get an article to be classified as Featured?

edit

The article on the front page is called a Featured Article but i thought that meant that it was the article that was featured for that day on the front page... but what it really means is that there is a group of super editors that decides if an article qualifies to be classified as one of about 4500 articles on Wikipedia that are so good that they are called "featured." Now, these Featured Articles are the only ones that you can choose from if you want to nominate an article for the main (or front) page. I wanted to nominate a number of articles that are about women, their works and their activities... ie a biography, a work of art or music or drama or literature by a woman, a woman's organization, a woman's sport or biology or philosophy... because there are not very many currently showing up on the front page. Finally i found out about the page with the list of Featured Articles and when i got there i discovered there are not very many women approved...

soooo.... how does one bring articles to the attention of these super editors and where are they? LOL really this is a lot of work and no wonder so few women have been represented here... its shameful actually... half the human race is female.

The question you asked is being discussed at the Teahouse. If you want to write a new article, you can read Your first article and A Primer for beginners. Many new editors find it a bit easier to improve existing articles, though. But the choice is yours. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:10, 18 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Welcome! And an answer to your question...

edit

Hi Fluffykerfuffle, and welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed you had a question about how to highlight women-related articles on Wikipedia's main page, and I thought I'd try to help you out. I'm very interested in closing Wikipedia's gender gap, and I'd love it if you could help! So, here's my attempt to answer your question:

  • First, for some additional perspective I suggest checking out this essay on Wikipedia's systemic bias: WP:SYSTEMICBIAS. Systemic bias is a big problem here on Wikipedia. Since articles are written by only people who have sufficient time, resources, and interest in Wikipedia, many subjects receive inadequate attention. It also doesn't help that Wikipedia's editors are overwhelmingly male; you can check out this page for more info on Wikipedia's gender gap: [1]. I hope you stick around Wikipedia and help us combat these problems!!
  • Second, for better or worse, Wikipedia has a lot of rules, so many that it can be hard to keep up with them sometimes. The most fundamental rule is that decisions about articles on Wikipedia are made by the consensus of editors, as explained more on WP:CONSENSUS. So if an article is to appear on the main page as "Today's Featured Article", a consensus must exist to add it there. As it stands right now, there's a general consensus that Wikipedia articles may appear as "Today's Featured Article" if:
  1. The article is a "Featured Article"; and
  2. Editors form a consensus on Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests to include the article on the main page.
  • Concerning #1: A "Featured Article" is considered one of Wikipedia's very best articles. Only a very tiny number of Wikipedia's articles are considered "Featured Articles". To become a Featured Article, a consensus must form among editors that the article passes the Featured Article Criteria, which are described here: Wikipedia:Featured article criteria. It can take a lot of work to bring an article up to Featured Article status!
    • Here's the list of current Featured Articles: WP:FA
  • Not every Featured Article has been placed on the Main Page as "Today's Featured Article". To see a list of Featured Articles that haven't yet appeared on the Main Page, see here: WP:FANMP. If you find any articles on this list that you'd like to see on the Main Page, I encourage you to ask! You can nominate Featured Articles to appear on the Main Page here: Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests.
  • You can also work to improve articles that you're interested in and bring them up to Featured Article status (and then propose them to be "Today's Featured Article"). Articles are nominated for Featured Article status here: WP:FAC. Editors will then decide by consensus whether the article meets the Featured Article Criteria. Anyone can nominate an article, and anyone can comment on a nomination. This process can be a lot of work and take quite a while. Usually (but this isn't required), editors bring an article up to "Good Article" status first, which has less stringent criteria than the Featured Article criteria (but can still require a lot of work!). Check out WP:GA for more information on Good Articles.
  • Also, it's easier way to get articles on the Main Page under the "Did you know..." section. Articles that are new, recently expanded, or recently promoted to Good Article status are eligible to appear on the Main Page in that section; check out WP:DYK for more information.

I hope this helps! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions. –Prototime (talk · contribs) 05:32, 18 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hello and thank you for taking an interest in the "Today's featured article" (TFA) process. My editing nom-de-plume is "Bencherlite" and I am the TFA coordinator, meaning that I supervise the "Today's featured article requests" page and handle suggestions for TFA appearances there, and also select articles for dates where nobody puts forward a suggestion (which is about half of the time, but that's another story...)

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as saying "let's have more women appearing as TFA" because the choice is so limited in comparison to the number of FA articles about men. If you look at User:Bencherlite/TFA notepad#Extra listings, you will see that there are only about 20 featured articles about women yet to run on the main page. Enid Blyton will run in a few days as well. WP:TFAREC will show that there have been eight TFA biographies of women this year so far: Jane Joseph, Hattie Jacques, Marie Lloyd, Nancy Mitford, Deepika Padukone, Rani Mukerji, Roekiah, Olga Constantinovna of Russia. If you widen the net to look at TFAs this year relating to work done by women, then we have Original Stories from Real Life and Rambles in Germany and Italy (books written by women), and Control, "Spinning Around" and Faryl (music by women).

I can only work with what I've got. If editors do not write high-quality articles about women in the same proportion as they do for men, then they cannot get into the TFA slot.

I removed your quasi-nomination from the TFAR page because that page deals with specific nominations, not general ideas that it would be nice to feature more women on the main page. (I don't think anyone would disagree with that anyway). If you've got a specific article you'd like to propose, then please follow the instructions at TFAR to nominate it. If you want to start a discussion about how to get more articles about women to featured article standard, though, then TFAR isn't the place for that, because TFA doesn't control what articles get promoted or how to get more articles worked up to the highest standards. Hope this makes sense, but feel free to ask me if I can help or explain further. Yours, BencherliteTalk 17:21, 18 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

I see from above that you're interested in featured articles too. The WP:Women in Green WikiProject are working on getting women's articles to "Good Article" or "Featured Article" status, so that's another place to help. PamD 07:14, 8 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • @Jack Frost: Luckily I happened to see this message at the teahouse before you deleted it there. If you translate the passionate wording into "How can I help improve the under-representation of women in Wikipedia?", it is a valid question for the Teahouse with an available answer which I've given here. Your deletion could easily have prevented this editor from getting their answer. Perhaps you too haven't heard of Women in Red? PamD 07:00, 8 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
