Throughout time man has been infatuated with exotic animals. Evidence for this can be seen in the way great sea monsters were strewn across the oceans of early maps depicting the supposed great monsters man had seen. In Greek Myth there are examples of protagonists slaying lions and even beasts like the minotaur. Rome was no different with their love for mysterious beasts from far away lands. As the empire grew so did the importation of exotic animals like lions to feed the elite's demand for the most expensive luxuries. There are also examples of animals being pitted against gladiators in The Coliseum as forms of fantastic entertainment.
