Mike Kelly photo published?
[edit]Hi ForeverFlying, glad to have you with us! I was muddling around in Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons just now and came across File:Bernard mike kelly.jpg. You had tagged it as suitable for transfer to Commons, but it seems to me that there might be a problem, because many negatives never made it into print. If the photo was published in 1930 then you are right, it is public domain now and could be transwikied. But if it was not published, then it would be an unpublished work for hire that might not enter the public domain until 2050 (as detailed at commons:COM:HIRTLE). In addition, looking at the Chicago Daily News photo archives on the Chicago History Museum website, I note that this one is tagged as copyright even though other CDN photos of Kelly are tagged as public domain. (Of course spurious claims of copyright on PD images are pretty common, so the claim alone isn't entitled to much weight.) Unfortunately the only CDN online archive I have access to is the one on Newspapers.com, which is woefully incomplete, so I cannot confirm whether or when the photo was published. Do you happen to know if it was published? -- Visviva (talk) 23:58, 24 August 2026 (UTC)
- No, I assumed that since the depicted date was 1930 and that it was from a newspaper company, that the publication date was 1930. Guess we'll need to wait till 2050 then
