User pages

edit

Hi Freda, thanks for the note! You can work on your user page at User:Freda Stevens, as it looks like you've already done some. Messages are for user talk pages, you did exactly right leaving me that note (so you usually wouldn't edit someone else's user page unless they give permission, hence the warning, which I agree was too stern for the obvious mistake). You can check out WP:UP for the guideline on what user pages should and should not have. You can just write the info on the page, but the photo is trickier, because you have to own the copyright to it (i.e. you took it yourself) in order to upload it, and you have to upload it with a license compatible with the GFDL. I can give you more specific help with whatever you need. Check out Help:Images to get started with that.

One other thing. You say "we" - is there more than one person using this account? If so, I strongly urge you to make separate accounts for each person. Not only will this make your wikipedia editing experience infinitely easier (e.g. you'll be able to communicate with each other more effectively, you'll have your own watchlists... you'll see what I mean once you've been editing for a while), but multiple users having access to this account will likely get the account blocked. Anyway, thanks for getting in touch! Definitely let me know how I can be of help. Unfortunately I have to go here in a minute, but I can get back to you later tonight. Your question on the Help desk

edit

I am writing in reply to your question on the Help desk. You requested a reply by email, but it is unlikely that anyone will do that. But for the next three or four days you can find the replies on the help desk by clicking on Wikipedia:Help desk#create page for a candidate.

If I understand correctly, you are trying to create a Wikipedia biography for Frieda Stevens. I am sorry to say there may be several problems with that. In the first place, if I understand correctly, you are writing about yourself or somebody you work for. This is strongly discouraged because you would have a conflict of interest in doing so, and thus you would have trouble maintaining the required neutral point of view.

Also the subjects of all articles on Wikipedia must be notable and must demonstrate that notability with references to published reliable sources. See WP:BIO for notability guidelines for biographies. I am afraid that the fact that Ms. Stevens is a candidate for the legislature is not enough to make her notable.

Follow up

edit

Hey again! I talked to the editor who gave you the stern warning, and they apologized and admitted it was an error. They had seen you editing another person's userpage and mistook it for vandalism, which we get a ton of. So this kind of mistake does happen pretty frequently (trust me, I make it a lot!). Anyway, yeah, they didn't mean anything by it and they're sorry.

So I'm curious now - are you trying to start a userpage (i.e. User:Freda Stevens), or an article in the main article space (i.e. Freda Stevens)? If it's the latter, let me echo teb728's concern: you should not write an article about yourself or someone you work for.

Anyway, keep in touch, let me know if there's anything I can do to help. Peace, delldot talk 02:46, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
