The article is literally called 'Arberesh language'. I will change it over again and again. If you want to write about some dialect, go ahead and create an 'Arberesh dialect' article. -- Ftillimi (talk) 22:00, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

Another editor changed it back to variety with a link to Albanian dialects. Read WP:BRD, and learn the difference between a dialect/language variety and a language on its own. Go ahead with your defiance. Arberesh and Albanian are not mutually intelligible to a degree that it can be considered a dialect. Arberesh has its seperate language identifier that is used by Ethnologue, Glottolog, Multitree AND Wikipedia -- but I'm afraid this will not get into your head in 100 years. -- Ftillimi (talk) 22:19, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

Arbërisht/Arbëresh can't be referred to as "a dialect of Albanian", because it is a subdialect of the Tosk dialect of Albanian, hence the correct description is "a variety of Albanian", as indicated by many sources (google books). It is not a language of its own, the name of the article should be changed to Arbëresh (many sources use "Arbëresh Albanian", but for Albanian speakers this would result redundant). – Βατο (talk) 11:12, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

Good point, Bato. It is commonly referred to as a dialect, but it actually is part of the Tosk dialect. In any case, it is not a language on its own - frankly, I never expected to see such frivolous claims. Ktrimi991 (talk) 11:20, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia uses the terms dialect and language in a strictly genealogical and relational manner. Tosk, Gheg, Arbëresh and every other Albanian variety is called a dialect. The argument which you're proposing is a sociolinguistic one which by itself is correct as there is no linguistic hierarchy between varieties of any language. All dialects are "Albanian languages". But wikipedia doesn't discuss sociolinguistic aspects or Weinreich's absolutely correct proposition that a standard language = dialect chosen as the linguistic vehicle for the purpose of state building.--Maleschreiber (talk) 23:52, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
