Yesterday's main page had an atticle on the House of Habsburg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Habsburg). When hovering over the link to "Holy Roman Empire" in the third papagraph, a complexity weird pop up appeared about non existent organisations and people. Today it has been fixed, but I took a screen shot of it. The link though when clicked was to the real wiki Holy roman empire page.

How do these pop ups work? Yesterday I thought I would try to fix it but obviously that has now been done. But i am interested anyway

Paulie Stewart moved to draftspace

edit

Thanks for your contributions to Paulie Stewart. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it needs more sources to establish notability and see WP:MUSICBIO for what constitutes notability for a music biography. All four references fail WP:IS. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. UtherSRG (talk) 11:47, 11 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@UtherSRG: I have moved the article back to mainspace. At least 2 of the 4 sources are independent of the subject (SMH & The Guardian). If this isn't sufficient, there are other sources that exist ( [1] [2] [3] & more ). If you still believe that isn't sufficient to meet GNG, I suggest taking it to AfD. GMH Melbourne (talk) 17:45, 11 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Did you read those two sources? They include interview material and, as such, are not WP:IS. See WP:MUSICBIO and I will indeed go to AFD. - UtherSRG (talk) 17:51, 11 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, the purpose of draft space is to give time for an article to get made with adequate sources before being moved into main article space. If you have additional sources, they should be added to the draft before it is made into an article. - UtherSRG (talk) 17:57, 11 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I thought I'd let you know that this article you moved to main space twice is being discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Paulie Stewart. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 01:53, 12 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

On 18 January 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 2020 Coulson Aviation Lockheed C-130 Hercules crash, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Monique Ryan

edit

Hi GMH, I'd love to get your advice on something if possible. I recently put Monique Ryan up as a FAC, which was not successful.

One of the comments that was made was that The 'Member of Parliament' section is rather bitsy, and jumps from issue to issue. It would be better to discuss how Ryan has positioned herself as an MP, including her overall voting record rather than listing various issues of at times unclear importance (for instance, on what types of issues does she side with the government and on what does she side with the the opposition? Has she successfully influenced government policy?)

I'm not really sure how to rework the "Member of Parliament" section to make this change. The trouble with writing about independent MPs is that they take public positions on a huge variety of things, and so putting their statements chronologically would mean jumping between lots of topics. Writing about government MPs seems much easier as you can't attribute decisions of a government solely to them, so ordering chronologically is fine. Grouping Ryan's statements by topic seems to me to make more sense, but it still makes it a bit choppy.

Do you have any advice about how to restructure the Member of Parliament section? Any thoughts are appreciated and totally fine if you're not sure!

GraziePrego (talk) 05:53, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest perhaps rewriting the Member of Parliament section to be a chronological biography of her time in parliament and maybe have a seperate section on her political views. I would also recommend a Peer Review as you'll be able to get many people nitpicking on the finer details to get the article near-perfect. There are also a few articles (here) that are Australian political biographies and FA status which can provide you with a bit of a structure/ guide on the best way to do this. GMH Melbourne (talk) 06:04, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Great thank you :) GraziePrego (talk) 06:05, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

edit

Hello GMH Melbourne,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Deletion

edit

I must apologise to you @GMH Melbourne- I mentioned Hamer in the discussion for deletion of Alex Bhathal, (also nominated by AusLondoner). Because of this, they immediately nominated Hamer for deletion as well. I recently created Alex Bhathal and I very much think her article should be kept- I only mentioned Hamer as an example of how a candidate can be notable enough to keep. The deletion discussion for Bhathal is ongoing. GraziePrego (talk) 02:13, 14 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@GraziePrego: Hello, no need to apologise, I understand where AusLondonder is coming from. WP:NPOLITICIAN states that unelected candidates aren't inherently notable, which is the case here. But if the articles meet GNG, then they are 'notable' outside of the requirements of NPOLITICIAN and hopefully the community discussion should result in a keep outcome. GMH Melbourne (talk) 06:16, 14 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @GMH Melbourne, glad there's no hard feelings. Happy to see what others think. AusLondonder (talk) 06:24, 14 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:

The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. ndash and mdash

edit

Re: [4]

Hello. The article you edited uses ndash and mdash instead of the actual characters for clarity of coding. Depending on the font (and depending on one's visual acuity), it can be difficult to tell the difference between -, –, and —. The price of this clarity is a few additional characters in the wikitext.

Unless you can cite a guideline that discourages this practice, please do not make this kind of edit. I have restored the ndashes and mdashes at that article. Thank you. ―Mandruss  15:49, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mandruss: Sorry for the error, this was a bot-assisted edit (m:User:TMg/autoFormatter#Character entity references). I agree that code is more practicable in this situation. I will be more careful next time around. GMH Melbourne (talk) 16:01, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have requested that that script be changed to remove this type of edit, but I'm not optimistic. Being more careful may have to suffice. ―Mandruss  16:25, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Rollback on London 03.06.17

Hi there! I started to edit the page on the Aphex Twin release London 03.06.17 and added a new section about the background of the record (being released at the festival, etc) since the article is a stub right now, however I noticed you rolled back those changes. Reverted draftifications

edit

Hello. I wanted to let you know that I reversed your draftification of John Jaycee Cuijpers, Gabriel & Co., Stadionul Soda, and Gary L. Coleman. I did so because articles older than 90 days should not be draftified without prior consensus at AfD, per the result of this RfC. Please be mindful of this when moving pages to draft space in the future. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:34, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Hey man im josh: Hello, not a problem, I have now PRODed them. Sorry for the inconvenience. Because the RfD says 'too old' and isn't really clear about the '90 days' rule, I assumed it was ok to draftify them as they hadn't been reviewed yet. Again, sorry for the trouble. GMH Melbourne (talk) 14:55, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
No worries, I usually end up telling one or two editors a week about this, as it's really only written down in WP:DRAFTIFY, which is an essay itself and not policy. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:58, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Regarding WP:GARC

edit

Hi @GMH Melbourne! I was wondering if there's a limit for how many articles one person can list at the review circles; I have a few GANs that I'd like cleared sometime, and I feel as if there's some current stagnation with how many participants there are. I've already finished my preliminary review for Growing Up (The Linda Lindas album), and I'm just waiting for the nominator to get back to me so I can continue reviewing their fixes. Just need an indication of whether listing another one of my GANs for review would be considered greedy or not.

Also, I want to reiterate that I think this is a wonderful idea, and that it should be promoted a bit more - I think it'll help a lot in clearing out the backlog. joeyquism (talk page) 07:26, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @Joeyquism, the aim of GARC is to reduce the GAN backlog and wait times so feel free to add more articles to the pool! Keep in mind though that the process is still being trialled and I have stopped advertising the page so it might take a little while for you to be paired in a circle. Thank you for your contributions to the process thus far and don't hesitate to drop me anymore questions feedback you may have! GMH Melbourne (talk) 07:36, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much for the clarification! I think I'll drop one more in within the next week or so after I (hopefully) complete my existing review. joeyquism (talk page) 07:41, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Matthew Charles Johnson

edit
Hi GMH Melbourne, I've now finished my copy-edit. I found there is a fair bit of uncited text in the section "Criminal history". I also noted some uncited direct quotations within that section. I have marked these texts with [citation needed] tags. Because this is a Good Article and a biography of a living person, we must be mindful to properly cite texts. Per good article criteria, good articles are required to comply with BLP.
I also noticed two primary sources are used; one is the judgement in the case of Williams' murder from the Supreme Court of Victoria; the other is the investigation into Corrections Victoria relating to Williams' death. According to WP:BLPPRIMARY, court records and transcripts are not supposed to be used as refs in articles; these should be replaced with, or at least augmented with, secondary sources. Review Africa Social Impact Summit

edit

Hi GMH Melbourne, trust this finds you well. I was wondering how long it would take for the above page to be reviewed, so I wanted to discuss it with you. The page was created about 8 weeks ago, it is ready and would need to be looked into by a reviewer. Thank you. Nnamdi93 (talk) 13:31, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Free content from The White House

edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Free content from The White House indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 07:43, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Administrator Elections: Call for Candidates

edit

Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Call for candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • October 8–14 - Candidate sign-up (we are here)
  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familar with the community's expectations of adminstrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a one week call for candidates phase, a one week pause to set up SecurePoll, a three-day period of public discussion, followed by 7 days of no public discussion and a private vote using SecurePoll.
  • The outcomes of this process are identical to making requests for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA or administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

To avoid sending too many messages, this will be the last mass message sent about administrator elections. If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.
