Disambiguation link notification for January 3
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Trowbridge's shrew, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sierra Nevada Mountains. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

DYK for Creeping vole
On 4 January 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Creeping vole, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that with a weight of 19 g (0.67 oz) and a length of 140 mm (5.5 in) the creeping vole (Microtus oregoni) is the smallest in Oregon? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Creeping vole. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
Oroville Fire Department (California)
Hello. I was hoping you could help me. I saw your comments regarding my nomination of Oroville Fire Department (California) for deletion. There is something I have never understood about the process and I was hoping you could help me understand. If I were to create a page for another fire department with the same level of effort as that page, it would surely be deleted in a matter of days. Why is it that pre-existing pages seem to get a pass? To be clear, I'm NOT arguing with your comments, just trying to understand. Thank you in advance! --Zackmann08 (talk) 06:57, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
vandalism
hi, i am not sure if you are stalking my userspace but,how did you guess that the page you nominated for deletion(user:regisaurusjacobi/vandalism)was exactly the page that i wanted to get rid of(if you wonder where did i find the crap i found it on the talk page of the dirty old egg-sucking ip)--Regisaurusjacobi 08:03, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
- You edit some of the pages on my watchlist, so your name kept popping up. Yes, I recognized your style from the IP. I checked out your edits, because frankly most of them make it seem like you are here to do something other than constructively edit an encyclopedia. Sorry to be a kill-joy. This page tells a story and it made me wonder if you were here for nefarious reasons. I've had to do a lot of vandal fighting in the past and can be kind of a dick. I'll leave you alone and am not a stalker. Cheers!

Hello Gaff,
This is reasonable. However, this is not. A concert tour for a notable band is an indication of notability. I caution you to remove that CSD tag and don't waste administrator time. Thanks, --ceradon (talk • contribs) 19:45, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

The Island of Doctor Moron
Hi Gaff. Thanks you for your attention to my entry on the above. This is my first attempt at entering an article although I am a keen user of Wiki. A few points: 1. Yes there is an apparent COI – I am the creator of the musical. 2. However – I have attempted to provide only factual information – names, dates, places etc. 3. My motivation is simply to provide an archive for future reference by others. 4. I do not need the self-promotion aspect as we have already attracted enormous positive attention from the industry people who count. Our aim has always been to take this show to another level and we are well on the way to achieving this. 5. As to the reviews you mentioned: Unfortunately, I was on a steep learning curve in how I should deal with the media. I was naive in allowing them into our rehearsals; I believed they were there merely to initially look and that reviews would happen at a later date based on actual shows. This was not the case: both reviews were based on early tech rehearsals where we were dealing with some major issues. Neither reviewer saw the actual show in full-scale performance before paying audiences. Most significantly, neither saw the packed houses (we sat 250 people) toward the end of our season when word-of-mouth ‘reviews’ drew audiences in and many back for 2 to 7 viewings of the show. The show underwent significant script and blocking revisions in the period between the visits by those two reviewers and the actual end of season. Unlike other musicals that have had to actually close down for major script revisions (Strictly Ballroom, An Officer and a Gentleman etc), we were able to accommodate refinements during our season. One of the reviews (not the SMH) is by a person who should not receive any credibility from Wiki – he is a self-appointed theatre blogger whose very demeanour caused me serious concern from the moment he attended our theatre. He will attempt to attach himself to this article for self-promotion only. Again, we received very strong unsolicited reviews from people such as Giles Hardy both as a feature article in Time Out Sydney - November and on ABC Radio National (Tony Delroy) and by Alan Jones on 2GB. Overall the press, TV and media coverage was quite extensive and overwhelmingly positive. 6. Our re-opening of the Palace Academy Twin Cinema building is also historically significant. A search of the records will reveal that it was an iconic cinema in Sydney and prior to that, the building was one of the two great theatres in Sydney in the early twentieth century. I renamed the theatre “The New Olympia” in deference to its name in 1919. If I can be of any further assistance, please contact me. Thank you once again for your interest and attention. - I could understand your rationale for AfD but equally I am happy to see that the article is kept. It needs further fixing but I won't be able to do so. As for DYK, I'd like to see a positive review (or at least a non-negative one) in the article to provide some counter to the negative ones I've read. Currently the most quotable material is from the David Allen (DivaKnowsBest) review – especially some of it which is not in the article.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 04:33, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

re: Tepperman's
Hi Gaff. I saw your note re: my edits to Teppermans (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tepperman%27s). I'm new to the process of Wiki editing, so although its my goal to use correct protocol my newness has me stumbling around a bit. Please let me know how I should proceed. Thank you! Ntepperman (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 20:44, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- * @Ntepperman: Thank you for your interest in building an encyclopedia which is free of bias and self-promotion. Since you have an obvious conflict of interest, being a member of the family, it might be best to just step back and watch the process unfold on this article. Please see WP:COI for details on that topic. As for my reasons for nominating the page, I cannot find reliable sources independent of the topic, to satisfy WP:GNG (general notability guidelines). If you have such references, you could either add them to the article, the article talk page, or the discussion at Articles for Deletion (which it appears you have found). --Gaff (talk) 20:48, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Hi Gaff - thanks for the reply. I certainly agree that there's reasonably the potential for a conflict of interest, since I am a family member. Since my goal is to create a Wiki entry for our business that was accurate and which follows Wiki protocol, I hope that I will be able to demonstrate appropriate objectivity and would appreciate your continuing feedback. To that point, thank you for linking to the GNG & COI pieces - I will read them shortly. As well, I will provide all possible references. Also, in trying to upload a logo I've learned that I lack that ability at the moment. The wizard suggested I ask someone for help. Are you able to provide that kind of assistance? If so, here's a URL for you: http://blog.teppermans.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Teppermans-Logo-Process-transparent.png Thanks again.Ntepperman (talk) 21:02, 22 January 2015 (UTC) I forgot to ask you - I must have done something to mess up the syntax for the "Infobox company" section, but I can't figure out what I did wrong. I'd appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.Ntepperman (talk) 21:08, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what went wrong with the infobox. Maybe revert it to the old one? I tried to fix it but no luck. As for the logo, you can probably upload it under Fair Use as a logo, unless you want to release the copyright. Gaff (talk) 21:17, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

I just added a bunch of references. Many of them are from news sites (newspapers & magazines), and there are a couple of blogs & industry sites as well. Hopefully that will help.Ntepperman (talk) 22:01, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- Looks good. I don't think it will get deleted. But it will need some editing, so I will see if the AfD can close early and try to get some cleanup done. Gaff (talk) 22:05, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Ok. I've already edited out some of the "promotional" language and Dragnet's Joe Friday's "Just the facts, ma'am" is my motto. The "History" section needs further editing - I'm hoping to pull references directly from some of the cited news sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ntepperman (talk • contribs) 23:00, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Checking back in. I've been down with the flu for the last couple of days so have only just now had a chance to get back to this. I've added a more formalized timeline to the history as well as additional citations, references & links. I've also gone through again to filter out the subjectivity.
Could you please take a look at this when you have a chance and let me know what you think, i.e., if you have further edits/ changes to recommend, or if you feel this is an adequate improvement, etc.
One note: I've got a crazy week this week, and then will be off on vacation for a couple of weeks. If you do have further edits that need to be made, I probably won't be able to get to them until the end of February. I hope that won't create any problems, but let me know. Thanks again.Ntepperman (talk) 20:43, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- Your best hope is to bring your concerns to the discussion at the articles for deletion page, which you have already been to before. I'm not an administrator and cannot keep the article from getting deleted. I'm also not able to work on it with you due to other obligations. Good luck! Gaff (talk) 22:06, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
Strange deletion request
I saw that you tagged User:Letsgetbanned for speedy deletion under speedy deletion criterion G5, as a page created by a blocked editor in violation of their block. As always in that situation, I checked to see who created the page, so that I could see whether they really were evading a block at the time of creation. Interestingly, I saw that the page was created on 17 May 2007 by Gaff. Are you telling us that you were evading a block at the time? Should I block you indefintiely for block evasion ? The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 18:25, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- ... actually, I have deleted the page under speedy deletion criterion G7 instead. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 18:26, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Well @JamesBWatson:, (...if that is in fact your real name...), an indefinite block would seem a bit harsh. However, a temporary block might help snap this compulsive need I am finding to revert vandalism & spam, get the vandals and spammers blocked, and do general housekeeping around here while waiting for a Featured Article candidate to move forward. Maybe time for me to take a break! Gaff (talk) 18:36, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

I am responsible for the changes made on the NUCA wikipedia page - I work for NUCA and have explicit permission to use our copy on the wikipedia page, so it does not violate copyright. I will go back to ad some secondary sources. Do you mind please contacting me first before you delete the work I spent several hours putting together? Then I would be able to fix the content rather than having to rewrite the whole thing. I am new at this, so I appreciate your patience. - @Margaretperry.mc: I strongly suggest that you go to WP:Teahouse, where you can get lots of friendly advice on editing Wikipedia and what this project is and is not about. "Your" edits are not technically deleted. If you click the "View History" tab at the top of the page, you can scroll back to your edits. You can revert my edits, if you think it is appropriate. If you have more concerns, I suggest working it out at the talk page of the article, so that more editors can weigh in , rather than the talk page of the user who made the edits you don;t like. As far as contacting you about my edits, that is what the edit summary accomplishes. My edit summary is clear as to why I reverted your edits. I'm not able to go to the talk page of every user who ever edited any page that I may choose to work on. It doesn't work that way here. I've made around 10,000 edits, so that would bew a lot of work! It sound like you have a conflict of interest on this article (see WP:COI), so creating a neutral article might be challenging for you. You should mention that at the teahouse. As for the copyvio concerns, as you see just above the button where you clikc "Save Page" when making an edit, you are releasing the material under licenses that have legal implications. A vague statement on my talk page, that you have been given permission may not be enough to get around this matter. I know how to get images/files released through a process called OTRS (see WP:OTRS), but as far as copy/pasting a large body of text, you should ask at the teahouse. This starts to get into issues of WP:NOTWEBHOST. Hope this helps and congratulations on your decision to contribute to the best encyclopedia to ever exist. --Gaff (talk) 18:33, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Deletion Review
Absolutely not — thanks for the suggestion, but it would be thoroughly inappropriate for me to close it, since I'm the one whose conduct is under discussion. If that weren't the case, I would be happy to do it, however. Any other administrator is welcome to close it, and probably non-admins too; after all, it didn't result in deletion or anything else that can't easily be undone by anyone. Nyttend (talk) 17:21, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- I should have asked — are you familiar with making FFD nominations? If you want to nominate some of the images but you aren't familiar with the process, I'd be happy to help. Nyttend (talk) 17:51, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- NFCR is for opinions on whether something passes WP:FUC; the reason I suggested that the 81 FFDs be sent there was that it was functionally a mass nomination alleging that the whole group was problematic, and I thought it might be helpful if people were asked their opinions on whether these images could pass the criteria. Had the discussion concluded that they couldn't, immediate deletion would have been in order — it would be only right to orphan all of them if they were deemed inherently unfair, and by following the rules, we'd be waiting several days before deleting them as orphans, but per WP:BURO we might as well have deleted them immediately. Basically, because NFCR is for opinions, it can be used if you're not sure whether something should be permitted, if you want to add an in-use fair use image to another article, etc., as well as talking about deletion. So...since you have a clear opinion on this image, I think it would have been better to go to FFD, since you were seemingly seeking support for deletion, rather than asking for opinions. Nyttend (talk) 00:19, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
- It would seem like a good thing, but the instructions at the top of the page make it sound like it's only for things already on Wikipedia, e.g. "This nonfree image is being used here; is that okay" or "This page has tons and tons of nonfree images; is that okay". Not sure why; your situation would be a good deal simpler than uploading it and then having to go through the process. In your hypothetical situation, you may well do better with the more general media copyright questions page. Nyttend (talk) 00:44, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
A beer for you!
Thanks for your review of Eric Burhop. For each Featured article I write, I normally write a couple of spin-offs that I improve to Good Article status. In this case the Featured Article is Mark Oliphant (now at FAC -reviewers welcome!) . While working on that article, I found that Burhop didn't have an article. So I created one. I also improved Harrie Massey, but it hasn't been reviewed yet. So all the Australian Manhattan Project scientists now have nice articles. Hawkeye7 (talk) 06:47, 14 March 2015 (UTC) |

Learnium International School
Sorry I did mean to come and explain but I got distracted. If you look at the second sentence on the speedy deletion tag it excludes educational institutions. The link in the tag links to Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#A7. No indication of importance (individuals, animals, organizations, web content, events) and it says the same thing. That leads to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools/Criteria for Speedy Deletion A7 which dates to 2008/09. Schools being exempt dates back further than that, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Clayton High School for example. At one time sending a high school to WP:AfD was a sure fire way to have people angry with you. There's even more stuff at Wikipedia:Schools#Notability. WikiCup 2015 May newsletter
The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.
Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.
- Coemgenus (submissions) was one of several users who worked on improving Ulysses S. Grant. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Dragonfly to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also took Damselfly there as well for a 2x bonus.
- LeftAire (submissions) worked up Alexander Hamilton to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is a level 4 vital article.
The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:58, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
