Feedback review
editHi Gemma - this article is very good and an enjoyable read. I am familiar with Holmes "Redcoats" from your book list, and it is a good reference for the artice. Most of the comments I have deal almost directly with Wikipedia's quality standards, from the Manual of Style, many of which are specifically designed to aid online layout, flexibility and accessibility which normally wouldn't cross your mind when writing an assessment or dissertation. I'll run through them, first:
- Remove the small "Life as a Redcoat Soldier" heading at top, as this is your lead section and needs no heading.
- Bolden "soldier in the British Army during the 18th century" in first sentence of the lead as it represents the article title.
- Caps in headings, and title; common noun: ranks, terms:
- Headings on Wiki need to only have the first letter capitalised, eg "The British soldier in the eighteenth century" - so this will involve having to move the article, which will create a redirect from the current. Then all top and sub-headings need to follow suit. Only names, proper nouns, etc need a capital.
- There are several times when you have used a capital for a military term were cap is not needed, eg "British Soldiers" and "soldier". This words and ranks are generally common nouns, but only become caps when used with a name, eg "Soldier Harris", vs "Harris was a British soldier". Or "General Wellington" vs "Wellington was the general in command". In the image with "87th Regiment of Foot Uniform" as a caption, "uniform" should be lower case. I don't think the word "colours" eg like in "was the use of flags (Colours)" needs a capital, like the word "flag" it's always a common noun.
- Use italics for Latin and other non-English terms (eg per diem)
- Quotes should usually not be styled or italicised, as wiki uses italics for other things, such as foreign words, book titles, etc.
- Shorten dates:
- 1756-1763 and similar date ranges should be shortened to 1756–63. For same decade dates, eg 1812 to 1815, use 1812–15, not 1812–5.
- Ndash dates, and page ranges, mdash hyphen pauses:
- Use endashes between date ranges: 1792–1815 rather than hypens. Either hold ALT then type 0150 on the keypad or type – between the dates.
- Use mdashes instead of hyphens where you intend a pause, eg between sentences—give an example or something—before returning to the flow of the sentence. Sometimes you use one "wherever space was available – basic amenities such as", sometimes two "selling their wares – coffee, liquor, beer etc – to the men". For mdashes, hold ALT then type 0151 on the keypad. Alternatively place — between the words.
- In the case that you use a notebook size laptop with no keypad, the longer entity version will be needed, as top row numbers won't apply ALT numbers.
- Use double quotation marks:
- One of Wiki's requirements to aid search engines in finding specific quotes is that you use "double quotes" round anything quoted or stressed with quotes, not 'single quotes', which can also be mistaken for other punctuation. (Make sure to use straight quotes, and not ″curly″ or “angular” form.)
- On looking in the edit screen of the article, all your single quotes are ‘grave’ accents. If you've used a grave accent ` anywhere as an apostrophe it needs changing to a straight ' apostrophe.
- Move 33rd image to even out text flow - the text between the 33rd and 87th pics is a little off. I'd suggest moving the 33rd up to just under the "Clothing" heading, and 87th down to the line where "In order to identify the numerous regiments from one another..." begins. If this doesn't help with wrapping, {{clear}} may be required to push the text neatly round the images.
- Bullet points:
- "See also" and "External links" items need bullet points before each item, rather than double spacing.
- See also - terms are linked to Wiktionary rather than Wikipedia. Would be best to link them to Wikipedia for people to follow-up on the the article, rather than the meanings.
- References: publisher, location, year of pub, isbn?
- Several books are missing information to help readers identify the book you used, I recommend use of the {{cite book}} template for listing titles as it self-formats the details you enter. You already have that for a couple, anyway - would be better to use it for all book titles to keep the Refs section looking uniform.
- Holmes', "Redcoat", Colley's, "Britons" and Cookson's, "British Armed Nation" are all listed twice in the References section. Unless you are using different editions or volumes of some titles which would need putting for clarity), they only need giving one.
- Fully cite websites to prevent link rot:
- As external websites can often change urls, remove pages or close down, fully citing webcites helps us identify the author, date, etc of referenced online article, just like a book reference. It also looks much neater than raw urls. {{cite web}} is the best template to use as it requires no styling - just pop in the details and it formats them itself.
Well, I know that seems a lot.. but none of it will change the content, just the formatting, in most places, and give the article a cleaner "Wiki standard" look.
The only non-style comment I have at the moment is:
- All your quotations are cited, which is good, they're key sources. But,
- Needs more in-line citations, especially where conclusions have been drawn:
- You said you've been writing this as part of a Uni scholarship, so I can accept that you have to draw conclusions and make your understanding of the information clear in addition to simply telling us what a British soldier is. In order for that to work on Wiki, however, and no be considered original research it is very important that you cite anything you have concluded from your references. For example:
- "The British Army was commonly seen as disciplined, regimented and harsh. Camp life was often dirty and cramped with a rapid spread of disease, and punishments could be anything from a flogging to a death sentence. Yet, many men volunteered to join the army to escape the bleak conditions of life in the cities; for a chance to travel the world and earn a regular wage."
- Here, the first two sentences combined form one conclusion, the third sentence another. Cite where you read this in one or more titles.
- "During the 18th century, the men who joined the army were recruited in a number of ways."
- "Motivations behind the volunteering nature were not solely patriotic, but commonly economic and profitable"
- "Many men who wished to become Officers had to purchase their commission."
- "Soldiers were not allowed to cut their hair as it prevented the queued appearance."
- etc, etc. The article averages about 1 citation to every 2 paragraphs. In A-class reviews on wiki we look for at least 1 citation per paragraph, at Feature Article level, almost one for every potentially challengeable statement, fact, figure, quote - which is nearly every sentence in historical articles, as it is a highly evidence-based subject, as you know, and peers are often unsympathetic towards weak referencing in historical texts - I see many books on Amazon given very bad reviews for excluding a Bibliography or giving opinions without showing their sources. For Uni degrees, citing info should be second-nature - as it's easy to note a page number as write/type notes even for a draft. I admit, I often read something, don't note it, then weeks later have a dozen books piled up that I'm relentlessly searching through for that one little snippet to cite in an article. So it often pays to note it as soon as you read it.
I've mentioned other reviews, because I'm a member of WikiProject: Military History. This article generally falls into the scope of military history, even though it's not tagged yet. WP:RFF normally gives basic feedback on content and style, mostly to new editors. The standard of this article is fairly high per se, and once cited more, will be even higher. I think it could probably pass as at least a B-class article once you do that, maybe A but I'm not certain. But, if you are interested in taking it further, you are welcome to join the MilHist project, which is mostly male-orientated, but the project is always looking for fresh members to partake in creating, updating and reviewing articles. For example, you can see the Redcoat article is one such page marked for improvement. But we also conduct peer reviews and reviews to help develop and promote articles to B-, A- and FA- class. Also there is the option to have your article reviewed as a Good Article (normally after it passes A, but before or instead of FA) if you are interested in taking your article further. I have reviewed your article more as a Peer review, than a basic RFF, given that it is a subject I enjoy and as a patriot of our boys in red - I have only one article myself at the moment, Battle record of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, so you can understand the shared interest. One thing I recommend, is that you adopt the "Notes / References" style, as I have used in that article, especially when citing the same selection of books numerous times, as it means less to type out, and looks neater in the footers. Whichever Referencing style you prefer is your own choice, as long as it's consistent and clear to other readers. I believe the late Holmes used the Notes/Refs style in his books, being a Prof he probably knew several styles.
I'll leave the "Unreviewed" banner up for the time being, as it may discourage other editors from jumping all over it with their own edits whilst you are still developing it. But I would be happy to provide a follow-up review once you work through the comments made above, and think it is ready. From there, it is up to you if you want to take it further via MilHist; there is no requirement that you do, it's an open invitation.
If you need any help with those MOS tweaks I don't mind copy-editing articles.
If you have any questions or concerns please ask, via my talk page.

Hi, sorry I missed one - in the "Food" section you have the weight of soldiers food rations, including fractions - the ½ unicode symbols you have used are not advised, for accessibility reasons. Can you please use {{frac}} or any of these preset-templates which will format fractions better: {{1/2}}, {{1/3}}, {{2/3}}, {{1/4}}, {{3/4}}. eg 1{{1/2}} results in: 11⁄2

Reviewed
editI've removed the Unreviewed banner, and Article Wizard messages and done a few minor copy-edits. Just so you're aware of a few things:
- {{cite book}} recommends ISBN-13 rather than ISBN-10, if a book only has the 10-digit, cos it's an old print, Amazon usually have the new number in the book info in their site.
- In some of your wikilinks you doubled the article name, eg [[British Empire|British Empire]] - you only need it once if you don't want the text to appear any differently from the name. In cases where you want to extend an article name slightly, you can do this:
[[Smith]]y
would give you Smithy but still goes to Smith. More useful for plurals, really, but it won't work if the first char after the closing square brackets is an apostrophe. Just helps keep the filesize of the article smaller more than anything visual, just use whatever method you're happy with. - I also put your book list in alphabetical order by surname - it's not mandatory to wiki, I don't think - it just looks better, especially when you have dozens of references and it's easier to find one if they're ordered. It's probably normal practice in Uni referencing.

Your Referencing tags
editHi - I've had to fix all the reference tags on the article, because I just noticed they were not carrying through, resulting in many not being displayed in the footer correctly. I'll try to explain with examples, to save you digging through the help pages:
You don't need to give all your refs a name, eg <ref name="Redcoats">Holmes, p. 1</ref>
if you only intend to cite that page once in the article. What wiki would do here is take the ref name "Redcoats" and treat it as being the same page, so if you have <ref name="Redcoats">Holmes, p. 1</ref>
and <ref name="Redcoats">Holmes, p. 65</ref>
and <ref name="Redcoats">Holmes, p. 150</ref>
in the article you'll only end up end up seeing:
- ^ a b c Holmes, p. 1
in the footer, where only 'a' refers to p. 1, whilst 'b' to p. 65, and 'c' to p. 150 - because it's grouping all the "Redcoats" refs into one citation - and each in-line ref will only display the same number ref, eg [1] where your citations are and be in the wrong order in the "References". So using a name is only necessary when you need to cite a page (or web page) several times throughout the article. When you do that, just give the first citation the full <ref name="Holmes50">Holmes, p. 50</ref>
reference, with a short unique name (people usually use "AuthorX", where 'X' is the page number, or range (eg "Holmes10-15" — it's okay to use hypens instead of and ndash here, as it's not seen by anyone) then any other time you need to recite that same page, you don't need the full reference, just <ref name="Holmes50" />
(the closing slash /> is vital or you'll get red errors) will refer back (or forward if you're backtracking the article) to the original ref name, creating:
- ^ a b Holmes, p. 50
A one off citation just needs <ref>Holmes, p. 99</ref>
to get:
- ^ Holmes, p. 99
You should be able to see all your Refs are showing now in the article, in order, with only the "33rd Uniform" web site cited twice.
Hope that helps make your referencing just a bit easier.

editHi,
No, please do ask away, I don't mind - having dumped all those MOS edits on you, I probably deserve it! :)
- For drawn conclusions you normally need to reference the points that allowed you to reach that conclusion. So, for example, we know Wellington hanged 4 men after the Siege of Badajoz due to the pillage and rape of the citizens - if you were to base a conclusion on that, you'd cite that incident from Holmes "Iron Duke", which lets readers understand your line of thought. As long as you are not editorialising, eg "Wellington was a rotten git because he hanged his men" vs a more objective "punishment was severe and soldiers could be put to death", it should be okay.
- At the moment your paragraphs are cited. You will find at Milhist review level, reviewers often prefer citaion per point, even if that means mid-sentence. Battle record of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington is an example of citing to the extreme (which MilHist welcomes, rather than discourages, because they have high standards). Another example of heavy citing of Holmes (and Elizabeth Longford) is on Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington - lots of citations to the point some editors will do anything to find a new source to reference. So don't worry too much about referencing a lot.. more is better for history articles, as many historians can be quite stuck-up about their knowledge and challenge points that aren't supported.
- You can reference titles in general, for but higher article promotion, in-line citations are more valid as they support specific information rather than broadly reference the article and expect the reader to go read the book to figure out what you read.
- Once you join there is an Assessment page for nominating articles - we do B, A and FA class. Peer reviews have recently moved to a more global page for all wiki to consider, at WP:PR. Good Article reviews have always been independently reviewed at WP:GAN as GA is a global standard, which does not recognise other standards as WikiProjects each have their own criteria on what makes a good A-class or FA, whilst GA is the same criteria no matter what the article is about. MilHist is one of the highest standard criteria, with one of the best records for processing articles for review, and promotion. I've more or less done a RFF/peer review in one - and I would have no doubt that this will be B-class once better cited.. possibly very close to A-class.
- I would probably recommend you skip another peer review and BCR, and possibly look to an ACR - the level of feedback will determine the standard. B-class Reviews only require 1 person to "pass" the article.. but A-class and higher needs a min. of 3 to "Support" its promotion - it is a very different process - reviewers normally comment on the article, tell you what they think is right or wrong, and once you have considered and possibly implemented their suggestions, they may either "oppose" or "support" it - so in short, a consensus of sorts, but a project coordinator will normally assess the level of support in order to promote it. Bear in mind it can be a little stressful, as some reviewers expect a lot, whilst some are a little easier going. They don't expect you to "do all the work" though, you can request help in copy-editing, finding sources, copyright issues, etc.. it's still a collaborative process.
- If you're going to cite a lot of pages, I'd recommend the short-hand version, eg.
<ref>Holmes, p. 120.</ref>
or<ref>Holmes, pp. 132–135.</ref>
for all your inline refs, and just enter the full {{cite book}} info once in the References section, minus thepage=
params. It also looks a lot neater, as seen here: Battle record of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington#Notes with the Bibliography beneath. - You can join MilHist anytime, and have a look at what they do. No need to rush into reviews until you're ready to.. they won't normally acknowledge that you've joined just by adding your name to the members page, because it's a huge list. But once you start partaking in reviews and discussions they are more likely to recognise and take interest in your contributions, as you build relations with the project. Info below:

Hi, no problems. I've added the {{MILHIST}} banner on the article's talk page - that puts it in the project's scope. I also scored it under the B-class criteria, and it passes B2–5 easily enough, which automatically rates is as C-class - we don't actually review at that level, we start at B, it just happens when B-class doesn't meet one or two of the criteria. In this case B1, which is for "suitable referencing an inline citing". It's probably not far off, though - I've had to be careful, simply because if I show bias because it's a topic I like, someone might claim I'm rating it too favourable, a conflict of interest. But it's also in your interests that I allow you to develop the article to meet required standards, than over-rate. I'm sure it will reach high-standards. I haven't taken the Wellington record to Featured Article standard.. not sure I want to, happy with A-class/GA standard - but also because I'm working on Napoleon's battle record - am having to spend a fortune on books - it's a shame Holmes did not write a biog on him the same as "Iron Duke" - it's been so hard finding books that are not too pro- or anti-Napoleon, but also covers the right grounds. Having to buy half a dozen books because there is no one good book that covers his vast career and life as I would like. Such a complex man...
Peer reviews, just so you know, are kind of "open ended" - you can request one at any time, and there is no rush or requirement to actually use any of the comments, apart from looking into those that relate to wiki guidelines/policy carefully. Eventually the reviews will stop coming and it will be archived. Whereas B, A and FA class reviews normally last about a month - giving time for reviewers to respond, you to apply them or discuss any comments, and then the reviewers to support/oppose promotion. I'm not sure you'll really need a PR or B-class once you cite it fully - I can assess it at BCR based on the original RFF feedback I gave, and other points made here - it's less formal than A and FA, and because MilHist often has a huge backlog of A and FA reviews, I'm saving them another by reviewing it without nomination. You will probably be able to take it to ACR and see what comments it gets after a bit more work - if it fails, you will know why though, and you can always renominate it - my Wellington article failed its first ACR - mainly my own fault for butting-heads with one of the reviewers.
There is one concern I think you may need to address before that though, and that is a some of the wording, specifically the tone. At the moment there are parts which come across more as more academic thoughts, than encyclopedic facts, eg "If we were to take a traditional regiment of foot..." or anything which mentions "if the regiment..." As you have written it for Uni to give a more personal touch and focus on an ideal regiment - whereas it really needs to be broader and less speculative, so "A traditional regiment of foot...", or "when a regiment..." takes the audience into a wider view of an army than personal impressions of a specific unnamed regiment. If you needed to then give specific examples, you can mention the 33rd or 95th and cite those sources, giving a more objective tone. No rewrite required - just a couple of words tweaked here and there to give a more neutral tone, shying away from it's original analysis as a student making conclusions to show understanding to a broad factual analysis where clear content and strong referencing shows your understanding more than assertions - that will give it much better standing if you nominate it for A-class, GA, or both.

editGreetings,
"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
