NYC subway infobox

Hi, I'm just wondering if we could discuss a few points regarding the new NYC subway infobox you came up with:

  1. On a few of the copies I made (for example, Willets Point-Shea Stadium, you've changed the table header coding [e.g., the "!"] back to a regular table cell with bolded text. Why do this, if the simpler header coding accomplishes the same thing?
  2. In the previous infobox setup, "Transfers" included not only direct subway-to-subway transfers, but also transfers to any sort of transportation to regional airports. I think that this should remain.
  3. Your setup lists the date of station opening as part of "Other"; this, I would think, would be more appropriate under "Station information."
  4. Many other metro infoboxes specify the location of the system (e.g., "New York City subway"), and I think that this should be incorporated into the new infobox. In addition, I think that the borough in which each station is located is an important piece of information and should be part of the infobox.
  5. I had previously thought that it was important to include the number of platforms; I can understand, however, that "Side platforms" implies 2, and "Island platform" and "Island platforms" imply 1 and 2, respectively. I do, however, believe that including the number of platforms is helpful and clearer than excluding them. In addition, I believe that information about free crossovers should be included, as this varies throughout the system.
  6. Seeing as how New York City has express as well as local service, I feel it is important to incorporate this into the "Next north" and "Next south" information. In addition, it is more appropriate to list the service that takes one to the next station from the current one, rather than all the services that serve the next station.
  7. While the signage at each station does not include the suffixes for ordinal numbers, I think that this is simply to save space on each sign, and it is more appropriate to include the number (e.g., 111th Street as opposed to 111 Street), as this is how the station names are actually pronounced.
  8. Links to each division (IRT, BMT, and IND) are helpful and do not detract from the line link as a whole in any way. Therefore, I do believe that a link in the infobox such as "IRT Flushing Line" be created as two links, one for "IRT" and one for "Flushing Line", thus providing links to two relevant pages, as opposed to one link to the Flushing Line page only.
  9. This is a slightly more minor point, but based on your edits to the 14th Street-Union Square page, you think that the color should be gray. I made it silver intentionally because NYC Transit uses a shade of gray for all of the subway shuttle services (e.g., the S - Rockaway Park Shuttle); the gray used for the Canarsie Line is lighter than the shuttles' shade.

On another note: To create Wiki links for any article with a title in the format "Name (other)" (that is, ending with something in parentheses), you can simply use:

[[Name (other)|]]

rather than the usual [[Name (other)|Name]]. The former format will create a link called "Name" but without "(other)", if so desired, without the tediousness of the latter format.

I think that this infobox could be very good, but there has to be some sort of consensus on it. Thanks for coming up with it, though; the old one was starting to annoy me. --root15 02:09, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

(NOTE: I wasn't sure how to message someone) This is what I think the general rules that apply for the infoboxes (in my opinion).

  • Yes, transfers to all forms of transportation should be included. As a general rule, regular MTA buses should have a seperate section in the article (such as Flushing-Main Street.) However, airport buses should be put in the infobox.
  • The color of the Station Information and Other boxes should change depending on the line. For now, if the station is an express station with two different colored lines (eg. Brighton Beach), the express service's color will be used.
  • Other means miscellanious information/trivia, while Station Information means line and service information.
  • The Borough can be included, but should be under Other.
  • The only time the next local and express station should be listed in the infobox is in an article about an express station (Willets Point, Union Square, Times Square, etc.).
  • I agree on only the current service for the next station, I would not show all lines that share the next station (unless express line, such as Q on a local station in Manhattan on the BMT Broadway line).
  • Services for the Next North and Next South should have the services for the next station under the name.
  • I believe that 'rd and 'th should NOT be included. On official subway maps and on the MTA site, those suffixes are not included, and an editor should not be worried which suffix to use. Besides, it is more aesthetically pleasing.
  • The line space specifically says LINE, not division and line. The old infobox did this the same way as I do, only the line the station is on.
  • I did not do the Union Square coloring, Pacific Coast Highway (user) did.

Thanks for your coöperation with the infobox, from what I heard/saw, most users liked it.

You can't really "message" anyone per se, just leave something on their own talk page.

It is a good infobox. And I like the diaeresis on your "coöperation" - very upscale =)

  1. Your opinion on transfers is what I had thought it was supposed to be. In addition, "transfers" proper should apply only to FREE transfers, while other connections (e.g., to commuter rail) should be under "connections."
  2. I never considered the color when different color expresses/locals were involved. One does have to choose one over the other, unless you do something kind of corny like make "station info" one color and "other" the other color. Concerning the Brighton Line, however, I'm not too sure about using the express's color (the orange B), only because the B only runs during weekdays, while the Q runs at all times. Then, even if we go with using the express/local color, there's going to be the problem of such lines as:
    • Queens Blvd (orange/blue express, orange/yellow/green local)
    • 4th Avenue (orange/yellow express, yellow/brown local)
    • 8th Avenue north of 53rd Street (orange/blue express, orange/blue local)
  3. Thanks for clarifying the purpose of "station info" and "other."
  4. Good idea for the borough info.
  5. Let me make sure I'm clear on the 'next station' info, just to be sure:
    • For local stations, list the next station with only the current service, except if the express service on the same line stops there also. (e.g., for 111th Street, list only 7 local for 103rd-Corona Plaza, but both 7 local and express for Willets Point. Also, only show 7 local for 74th-Broadway, not 7-E-F-G-R-V)
    • For local stations, only show the next station on the local service; for express stations, show the next local station, as well as the next express station (e.g., for 61st-Woodside: local 69th, express Junction)
    • Services go under the station name
  6. I still disagree regarding the ordinal suffixes, as I think that the MTA only excludes them for space-saving purposes, and the aesthetic nature is debatable. However, this is really an insignificant point; I'm certainly not going to obsess over cardinal numbers versus ordinal =)
  7. I understand that it says LINE and not DIVISION and LINE, but leaving the "split link" does not take away from it; there is still the link for the line, as well as a useful link to the division, which someone might take advantage of if they are so inclined. However, this is another insignificant point that I won't linger on.
  8. I guess I didn't look too closely at the history on Union Square =)

I'm currently working on a template for this infobox; I'd like to get your input when I'm done.

London Underground station list

Please cease your edits to the LU station lists on individual lines pages. Firstly all the stations will, obviously, be on the same line, so there is no need to colour-code them. Secondly, you are removing information, such as previous names of the line. And finally, the disability link you are using is a template designed for the NY subway - which links to an article about that. Ed g2s 16:16, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Burj-dubai-june-24-04.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Burj-dubai-june-24-04.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
