Re: BART problems

I don't know if it'll help, but I've tried using Category:Chicago Transit Authority rail succession templates as an example. So far it hasn't worked, but it seems to be better than what you had before. ----DanTD (talk) 04:49, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to   The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by   Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to   Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1,   Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and   Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Chinese Kale

Dear Mr Gfoley4, since you live in Illinois I presume you are fluent in English. Twice I have brought to your kind attention the fact that Chinese kale does not apply to Kai-lan. THIS, and only THIS is the Problem. It is a gross mistake an it is a pity you refuse to correct it. Your replies don't make sense. You don't question the fact that Chinese kale is a wrong redirect to Kai-lan. I hope this time I made myself clear. If you don't want to move Chinese kale to 'rapini' where it belongs, no objections.

I am not familiar with wikipedia red-tape and wouldn' be able to trace your reply. Moreover my IP seems to change. In order to reaad your comment I'll make another request for Chinese kale. with my best regards Prof A.C. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.43.238.196 (talk) 08:03, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Agreed

That Blizzard article does seem to be lacking contributions from those of us outside of the Chicago/Northern Illinois area... but does it really need a tag on the article regarding undue weight...? The editor who put it there (who apparently has issues with Chicago in general judging by his edit history) is not contributing anything to the article but criticism and doubts. Anyway, thanks for grading that. Ryecatcher773 (talk) 08:08, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Edit war

I am not engaged in an edit war. I removed text that should not be included in that section of the article, most of it shouldn't be included at all as it was mainly untrue, ad hominem attacks. It is BigK HeX who is doing the edit war. Have you warned him too, or is just me again? I'm getting sick and tired of this constant bullying. I've been a student of the Austrian School for several years, BigK doesn't know anything about it. He is not competent to edit the article. Misessus (talk) 22:21, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

I have also notified BigK with the exact same notice I gave you. I wish to stay out of the discussion and not pick sides. →GƒoleyFour22:24, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
That would be nice. On the other hand, shouldn't you examine the situation instead of automatically block the first one who technically reaches the limit? After all, the reason for one hitting the limit is that the other party keeps undoing the revisions. Misessus (talk) 06:10, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I've never touched Austrian School, Misessus, but I just reviewed its edit history, and I have to say that you clearly are engaged in an edit war. I'm sure you believe you're doing the right thing, but it appears to me that you've left your sense of perspective behind in this instance. In other words, if Gfoley hadn't warned you both, I would have done. And re your comment immediately above, just don't go there. Users can be blocked, and frequently are, for edit warring even if they don't reach 3RR in a given day, and you're on very thin ice in the thinking your last comment manifests. I don't intend the least disrespect, or mean to speak condescendingly in saying this, but "a word to the wise", you know. Oh, also, please note that calling another users good-faith edits "vandalism", as you did here, merely because you disagree with them, is a really bad idea. I've also made comments about this to BigK HeX. Best regards,  – OhioStandard (talk) 13:30, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

No problem!  GƒoleyFour21:14, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

David is not using a "stiki bot". He is using an semi-automated program called STiki that helps fight vandalism. I have used the program myself, and it is very useful. He obviously made a mistake reverting your good faith edit. Please lay off. The three revert rule applies to talk pages also. Different users have different "rules" for their talk pages.

Oh, and why not create an account! :) (But, I'm sure you've heard this before) :) Cheers, →GƒoleyFour02:42, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Why did you quote stiki bot? Isnt that its name? Has anyone ever checked after the bot for other edits that are good? Im weary of those bots. I really feel some editors make them just to get their edit count #s higher. I didnt revert 3x TD's page. I put the comment back in to correct the error since I did offend it. I did it so he'd know I read and heeded what he said. 69.140.66.37 (talk) 09:56, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

TfD relisting

Some of the discussions that you non-admin-ically relisted today were, in my opinion, reasonably uncontentious deletions. It's probably better to leave them to an admin, who is not restricted to keeping or relisting (as us non-admins are), but who can also delete the template. Often, silly templates that are plainly useless but don't fall under a CSD criterion can just be deleted after the week-long opportunity of discussion, even if no arguments are put forward (besides the nom's). Thanks for your work. — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:03, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

In Regards to my Justin Bieber Edit

My post that you reverted was a neutral point of view and not bias in any way. It even states in an earlier paragraph that it was the most disliked YouTube video of all time, if you are not familiar with YouTube, there is a "Dislike" button on every video. This allows for statistics to be recorded, it was not my own opinion that it was the most disliked video ever.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A large super computers is being constructed in a suburb outside Philadelphia. While there are no details as to the purpose of the computer, there is speculation that it will have a water cooling unit so large that it will be also be capable of generating Hydo power. The estimated Hydro power could be capable of suppling enough energy to power the the entire suburb of Lower Moreland where the computer is being built. There are environmental concerns over the noise that the computer will produce from its massive array of cooling fans. It is believed that it it may be a secret project of the on-line retailer Amazon that will allow consumers to buy items at twice the rate than is currently possible. Since there is no other reason to assemble such a massive computer most experts agree that the Amazon connection must be the likely reason for the build.

Tag change

Hi

Just wondering why you changed that tag from "admin help needed" to edit, to semi-protect edit needed on Template talk:TOC limit. That template surely has to go on the template page, not the talk page?

Obviously you cannot do that as you are not an admin? (Hence my asking for adminhelp?)

Chaosdruid (talk) 05:41, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

The {{editprotected}} template is different from {{edit semi-protected}} as the former alerts admins to the page. The ladder alerts any auto-confirmed user, like yourself and I. I thought it would be a better template to use. You could add the {{Adminhelp}} template but that would be a bit redundant. BTW, the reasoning a saw it so quickly is that help tags alert members in #wikipedia-en-help connect channel to help. →GƒoleyFour06:00, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Category:WikiProject Articles for creation

Hi. You've rather clogged this category. I'm not sure what is gained by putting everything in this category rather than in well chosen subcategories. Indeed I don't think there is a need to categorise every subtemplate either, as long as the main template is properly categorised. What do you think? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:30, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

I guess a got a little carried away when I found Special:UncategorizedTemplates and thought "I know a category for those!". Do you think that it would be better if there was a Category:WikiProject Articles for creation templates or just remove all of them? →GƒoleyFour19:44, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
That category might be worth creating, although in a way Category:Template-Class AfC project pages does the same job albeit with the talk pages. One problem with putting categories on preload templates is that the noinclude is not respected. (I hear that has now been fixed with the new MediaWiki version but have not checked it yet.) Hence we now have a lot of articles in the category as well - these will certainly need removing. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:10, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
I notice that this category is still in a bit of a mess. Will you have any time to sort it out? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:08, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm a bit busy with other WP projects. I'm going to try to sort out the mess over the weekend. (With Hotcat helping!) GƒoleyFour05:40, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion work

Hi Gfoley! As I'm sure you've noticed on your watchlist, I've been going through the CSD backlog in the last hour or so, and I've reviewed a number of your taggings. While your tagging seems to be quite accurate, I just thought I'd mention that you should try to notify the creators of articles when you tag them. I note that you've used Twinkle in the past, but are not doing so now. I would suggest that if you choose not to use it, it is best to put the templates in manually (see here for a list of them) so that the author has a chance to respond to concerns. Thanks!  -- Lear's Fool 02:32, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Hmm..., I've just noticed that the warn module of Twinkle seems to be busted. Is this the reason you've stopped using it?  -- Lear's Fool 02:34, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
Yes. Over on IRC we have been mourning our dear friend TW. I guess I got so used for it doing it automatically, that I forget to do it. I'll made sure to notify the author from now on. (But hopefully I won't have to do it manually for much longer!) →GƒoleyFour02:44, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Rock Island Additions

Dear sir,

I was reviewing the addition of the Chicago-Denver navbox you added to former Rock Island Line stations. I think that it is misleading putting the historical, disused line alongside operational services (Denver Union Station, LaSalle Street Station). Unless you change the navbox to mention that the line is disused as a passenger service, I'm going to delete the box from station pages. Regards, WaltBren (talk) 19:51, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi there. I will add {{s-note|text=former services}} to the s-line templates on the ATSF and Rock Island Line stations that I have so far made. (e.g. Mazon Station, Morris Station). →GƒoleyFour21:23, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, the "Former services" banner looks great. How many of these former passenger services are you planning on doing? Do you need any help with it? WaltBren (talk) 20:04, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
How many? I honestly don't know. Some of my goals are the Santa Fe and Rock Island Line and obviously these are a long way off. I am trying to do the Chicago—Los Angeles ATSF main line while also doing the Rock Island Chicago—Colorado Springs main line. The trouble is finding any references for them; I have found this Google Book timetable from 1904 that I have been basing them off. Of course I have to find more references than that. You can help but I'd appreciate it if you'd let me do the Illinois stations though. →GƒoleyFour21:22, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to   The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and   Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round.   Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to   Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to   Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here.
