I am trying to write a NEW article, "Glen Ivy Hot Springs." I am in the Marketing Department at Glen Ivy. I am looking to write an article for informational and historical purposes, and not as a marketing tool. I have seen a lot of Help articles on Wikipedia about conflicts of interest and writing about companies. I would hate to do all of the work for this new article and see it denied or deleted. Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated.
- If you've read some, you've probably see that we strongly recommend against what you're trying to do. Not to belabor this much, but it is very difficult to write about anything you have a personal or professional interest with in a purely objective manner, particularly if you're not familiar with WIkipedia or how sensitive many of our policies can be to sefl-interest.
- However, if you do go ahead (as almost everyone does when I give this spiel!) I guess I'd start with the following advice. First, and foremost, start by identifying the best sources available. From Wikipedia's point of view, this means stuff written as independently from the subject as possible (newspaper articles, magazine articles, academic journals, and books from real publishers are most likely to meet this criteria. Not press releases, nor articles that are lightly warmed over press releases.). Read what they say about the subject, and then use the information there not only to indicate what to say and not to say, but also how to weight it. It's not a matter of direct percentages, but if most of the best third-party sources talk about the subject in terms of some particular aspect of it, you'll want to make that a signficant part of the article. Of course, a few mechanical details can always be filled in from primary sources, but primarily, information and weight should stem from third-party sources, and preferably a range of them.
- There are a couple ways of starting articles on Wikipedia, and while it will be slower to do what I'm about to suggest, you might consider attempting to make a draft article and submit it to the Articles for Creation process. WP:AFC. It's heavily backlogged, and each submission can take time to review, and the reviewers (including myself) can be picky or a little inconsistent, you'll usually get someone who will tell you what's working and not, and what the next step toward improving it is. Short of drastically promotional material or any sort of copyright problem, at least you won't have your draft deleted out from under you while you're working.
- A quick word on copyright: Just write everything in your own words. Even if it is possible or arguable that some text could be justified (outside of quotes) as fair use or permitted by the author... the specific nuances of Wikipedia licensing can be confusing to new editors here, and the simplest solution is to write everything in your own words, period. (Again, if you want to quote someone briefly, that's different and fine, just attribute it and use quotation marks.)
- Anyway, I do apprecaite your interest in the encyclopedia, and it sounds like you would genuinely like to help us improve Wikipedia. Thank you! I hope something I've written here is helpful. Cheers, --j⚛e deckertalk 20:14, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Your user name
editYour user name apparently represents a company rather than an individual, so it is not acceptable. Please read WP:CORPNAME, and then choose a new user name for you as an individual. Please also read about conflict of interest. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:08, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, David. That is helpful information.

- Why can't I edit Wikipedia?
Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.
- Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?
Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again.
- What can I do now?
If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you may consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.
If you do intend to make useful contributions here about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:
- Add the text
{{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}
on your user talk page. - Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
- Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
- Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
- Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.
