Stub sorting note
editI made a suggestion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals/2009/December#split of Cat:Pennsylvania politician stubs that you might want to consider.--Blargh29 (talk) 06:02, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
Hi Grutness, Sorry you left, however, I hope you find me message. You were the administrator who deleted Transylvanian-stub in 2007 after a breef discussion. I think that after 3 years this decision may be reconsidered. On Google you have 3.320.000 results for Transylvania. There is a Category:Transylvania with 9 sub-catagories on Wikipedia. Being so I do not see any reason why not to create such a stub. There are hundreds of Transylvania-related stubs, as Transylvania is a very special region first mentioned in 1075. It used to be part of Hungary, now belongs to Romania, was independent for 150 years. It always had a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural character. In the discussion, the main argument for the deletion was that Transylvania is not an offcial admnistrative region of Romania. In my opinion, this is not a decisive argument as e.g with respect to biographies or historical articles current administrative division is unrelevant. There are many stubs on German or Hungarian persons who lived in Transylvania let us say 300 years ago. You can mark them as Hungary or Germany stub, although Transylvanian Saxons had very little do with Germany. If you put them under Hungary, criticism may arise that the territory happened to be independent and not part of Hungary at that time. If you put as a Romania-stub, critism may arise why a 12th century guy belongs to Romania, when Romania did not even existed at that time.I think it would not harm if the Tranylvania-stub was created Kind regardsRokarudi 22:07, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- If it's a currently existing administrative region of Romania, then I agree with you that it should have a stub. If it's not, then i don't, since that's the way stubs are split up. In either case, this is not the place to propose such a stub - go to WP:WSS/P. Of course, if there's a Transylvania Wikiproject you've got a better tool in the form of a banner talk page template available, and a stub template is unnecessary. Unreferenced BLPs
editHello Grutness! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 11 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 318 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

AfD nomination of The Hunt For Gollum
editAn editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is The Hunt For Gollum. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Hunt for Gollum. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.
Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:05, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Plazadesoberanía-geo-stub
editThe autonomous cities are not plazas de sobernaía, are autonomies of Spain as Aragon or Castile and León.
Do not you know that Ceuta and Melilla are not "plazas de soberanía"? They form a part of Spain, they are not subordinated to Spain because they are Spain. Your mistake and the mistake of this Wikipedia is causing many confusion. These declarations of Juan José Imbroda, the President of the Autonomous City of Melilla are very evident (in Spanish):
"ENGLISH"
- -Question 6th. President, why there are not yielded the Islas Chafarinas, Alborán and Alhucemas to the Autonomous City of Melilla? It of "plazas de soberanía" is very antiquated. I believe that it should increase the territory of the city incorporating these islands that do not form a part of any other autonomy (exempting Alborán, which is in the province of Almería). The rock of Vélez de la Gomera for Ceuta.
- -Response: Melilla is not a plaza de soberanía, the denomination of Melilla comes given in the same Constitution: it is a city as other one anyone. Saying this, I will say to you that we have relation with the Chafarinas in some fields, and that it would be very interesting what you say, especially in these islands, that as his dimensions, flora and fauna they have an enormous interest to be known.
Please, you had a template for Ceuta, one for Melilla, and other one for the plazas de soberanía. You are mistaken, and I claim that you see the truth. Please, I request you. Satesclop 17:49, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- I seem to have told you this about 100 times already - READ THE WORDING OF THE TEMPLATE. This article about a location in Spain's autonomous north African cities or Plazas de soberanía is a stub. That is, it is for places that are either in the PdS or in the two autonomous cities. The template makes it clear that neither Ceuta nor Melilla is a PdS. I have never claimed that either Ceuta or Melilla is a PdS, and neither has anyone in WikIProject Stub sorting. Grutness...wha? 21:45, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Lindi St.Clair
editI was reading the page on Lindi St.Clair - which is me. You ask about which is the right spelling - Lindi St.Claire or Lindi St.Clare. Well, it is the latter St.Clair. HOWEVER I used to spell it the former way from 1974 to 1985 then a clever client told me that the anagram of Lindi St.Clair was 'clit arse' and I thought that vulgar and didn't want it. so I dropped the 'E' from St.Claire and changed it to St.Clair. In face, I explain this in my autobiography. You also have my surname wrong. The court case about my tax had it sopelt wrong too, from which you got your info, but I deliberately let them spell it wrong and I purposely failed to correct them. I did not want them knowing my real surname, so that's why it remained on record as Aken, but there is NO Aken born in 1952. If you want any co nfirmation of anything relating to me, please contact me. Lindi St.Clair (Miss Whiplash). Bromyard. Herefordshire. It will reach me. The postmen know where I am. Or email me. This person is not less notable and worthy than many others in Wiki. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.214.68.60 (talk) 03:49, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
- I've no idea. I suggest you ask the person who deleted it, User: NawlinWiki. However, I can see little in what was written in the article which indicates that this person deserved an article - there is very little indication that the article would reach Wikipedia's notability guidelines. If you wish to see the article undeleted, I suggest you take your case to Wikipedia:Deletion review, not here. But be sure you have good, valid reasons for the undeletion - other articles equally notable exist is not such a reason. Grutness...wha? 23:23, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
NZ location maps
editHi Grutness, how are you? For your information, I've updated many of the static location maps of New Zealand with the template, and was going to list them at FfD as superseded. The maps derived from File:SimpleNZmap.png/File:NZ plain map.png have a minor scale issue I'm looking to fix, NI oversized by about 1.3. XLerate (talk) 10:26, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
- Hi XLerate - that's fine. I was hoping that someone would provide better maps eventually. As to how I am, my life's busy falling apart a bit, unfortunately - this month has probably been the worst of my life. Buit I don't particularly want to go into details here. Grutness...wha? 22:18, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Grutness, the maps are overwise good when overlayed with one from NZTopoOnline. For the roads and rivers I think uploading an amendment is the answer. I'm sorry to hear of this month's problems, I hope next month is better for you. XLerate (talk) 09:27, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello!
editHi Grutness,
Came across you via the "Great Pemba Island Naming Controversy" of Feb '06 to Jan '09. (See Talk:Pemba_Island). Was sad to see that you had been very unwell last year, glad to see you were still contributing, then dispirited to see you were having a bad time again. I have never been seriously ill, (my teeth are a mess though!) but my work and personal life really suck. (Hope things are great with you and your Alice!) Wikipedia has helped keep me sane during my current bout of unemployment, though I came close to quitting after 3 months (4 month ago) because of one editors unfortunate remarks.
This isn't you james dignan, Sydney. But NZ, Otago Uni, and similar talents! Funny world. I was rather surprised when I googled my 'secret identity'. I was: a Bank Note engraver, Ice Hockey goalie, Stock Car driver (all USA), another well known American (of the wrong gender!) and a Published Cartoonist (UK). There are also a few 'mes' in Oz too!
I was also into Sci Fi fandom, though not active for,.... a long time actually! Liked 'The Champions' too, but you didn't mention UFO! (just had a look at your 'boxes', indeed a lot in common! Been there :-[ too! ) Chin up! 220.101.28.25 (talk) 07:54, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- Hi - yes, I've come across that JD before and was surprised at the coincidence (there is yet another James Dignan in Australia - a cousin of mine - but he's in Brisbane). I'm still contributing occasionally, just very infrequently. Thanks for the good wishes - sadly things have not improved in my personal life (unfortunately, to the point where "my Alice" isn't my Alice any more, after twelve years :(((. Life goes on, but slowly and fairly painfully at the moment. Grutness...wha? 12:22, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- Extremely sorry to hear that Alice has 'left'. I was afraid that may have been the case. I have not had the fortune to have anyone in my life for that long. In fact I have not had anyone in my life for nearly 13 years! And I am a few years older than you. But I know the type of pain you are feeling. I really sympathise. I am far from the greatest source for 'relationship' advice but, flowers can work wonders! (at least they did for me in one case, ≈25 years ago! But she ended up marrying someone else!).
- You have a few editors at the top of the page who have also expressed concerns for your difficulties, so you are not alone.!

- You seem to have a few career options. That’s a real bonus. I have no artistic abilities that I know of, though I seem to enjoy writing and editing, and I have/had some skills in desktop publishing, but it hasn't helped me to get a job recently! I don't even have enough income to pay the rent, so my savings are rapidly depleting. And about 8 month ago I got turfed out of the flat I had lived in for nearly 20 years! Now my rent is 60% higher than 18 months ago! Ah well, for me at least, it could be worse!(?) A day at a time, "slow and painful". The 'occasional' C2H5OH-2 may help too! Best wishes! --220.101.28.25 (talk) 14:14, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- Again, thanks for the kind thoughts and words. If flowers would help in this case I'd have bought up fields of them - I somehow doubt it would do any good though. I'll just keep taking one step at a time for now, time alone will tell whether anything can be rescued here. BTW - you must have had a good long look at my website, by the look of it! Understand the feeling. Time heals, so they say. (I think people who say that have never had their heart 'metaphorically' ripped out of them). Website?, yes I had a look, that's what they are for! No? ;-). Don't think I'll ever do my own website, don't see the need. Not very notable! My Talk page is the closest I have for now (may have a Real Userpage in future, considering User:xxxxxxxx, WikiCounselor? NOT!)
My final 'helpful' suggestion is that maybe 'burying' yourself in your 'real' work, (Or even low stress Wiki editing!) to take you mind off the fact that Life Sucks (for now) might help? It works for me, sometimes.
I could actually use some advice on a wp:BLP (shudder) issue HERE. Ok if the answer is NOooooooooo.. ! (plus sound of running feet dissapearing into distance) Opinion or direct to a policy page, or third opinion as I am not really up on BLP policy. Although I know wp:NPOV, wp:UNDUE etc, and not to put in 'salacious' details without reason and a reliable source! See Alan Thompson (swimming coach) for my first BLP work (expanded from 2 lines!). Hope I am not bothering you, too much, unfortunately we are in same time(?) zone, only real buddy I have made here is in Lincoln, Lincolnshire (UTC) not + 10! or rather +12! (and rather busy when on Wiki)--220.101.28.25 (talk) 09:46, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- BLP's not an area I tend to deal with much - it can be very contentious, even more so when its actually a B*no longer*LP, as in this case. Articles of the recently deceased tend to get a lot of editing and come under much closer scrutiny. The relevant policy is at Wikipedia:BLP#Privacy of names, which suggests that the name of the daughter wouldn't be included - but actual practrice and policy are actually not identical in this particular instance, and if a name has been widely reported (as in this case - even here in NZ, pictures of the daughter kneeling in a church commemoration were widely seen) then there's usually no harm in adding it. I wouldn't normally expect to see the names of grandchildren in an article like this, though the fact that there are granchildren would be acceptable (normally you'd only find that sort of information if the later generations of the family had notability in their own right). I'd suggest running this one past Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Living people, or possibly Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography/Politics and government though - they'd be the most clued up on the normal procedure in cases like this. PS - don't worry, I'm keeping busy... the garden's had a decent fright from the amount of work I've done on it in the last few weeks! Grutness...wha? 02:48, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Maria Kaczyńska
editThank you! That's pretty much the info I needed. I would not care, so much, if the removal was also done 'well' but, "They had a daughter" (post edit), seems 'unencyclopaedic' to me. Plus the fact I have a lot more edits than the editor involved, plus they seem totally intransigent.(Wiki-lawyering?) I possibly feel a little "anti-IP-ism" at work. (but I consider them the 'noob'!)
I understand now how people become attached(wp:OWN) to articles they have edited a lot. When the crash happened, her hubbys article got protected, but no one paid much attention to hers, so I made a lot of edits, (I am by far the №1 editor there. №2 is a bot!), also removed vandalism, added the info box, looked for more info, better references etc. etc. It had one bare URL ref when I started! N.b Saw the 9 TV News, had "Marta" at the funeral(?) for her dad!
Anyway, enough bitchin, thanks for the advice. Go easy on 'scaring' the plants, I'm sure that's illegal, the "Royal Society for the Protection of Flora" may get you. (Wot, red-link?) ;-) I'll try not to bother you more in the near future, but let me know if you need a hand on-Wiki! See you around! --220.101.28.25 (talk) 09:05, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

- Alternatively, you could use the browser's zoom feature to make the page text really large. In Firefox, you can zoom in with View->Zoom->Zoom In (and similar to zoom out again), or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+"+" (the plus sign on the numeric keypad). On Windows, the same keyboard shortcut works with Internet Explorer; I presume there's a menu option there too.-gadfium 08:37, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

The Devil and the gentleman
editHello, Grutness. Hope youre feeling better. This may be four years too late but I remember the sea shanty too.
A sou'wester blowing, Billy, Cant you hear it roar, The devil and the gentleman go walking on the shore
Haul haul away, Billy, Haul along o' me The devil took the gentleman, He won't take me The devil took the gentleman He won't take me.
or was it he won't take thee? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Inklin (talk • contribs) 09:02, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Are you still interested in the words to The Devil and the Gentleman? (Which may also be called Haul Away Billy?) A "Gentleman" was another word for "privateer", i.e. a licensed pirate. Like you, I learned it decades ago at school and have tried to Google it, as I can only remember three verses, but here they are...
(start with chorus) Haul, haul away Billy Haul across the sea The Devil took the Gentleman He won't take Thee The Devil took the Gentleman He won't take Thee The North wind's blowin', Billy Blowin' across the sea The Devil took the Gentleman He won't take Thee (repeat last 2 lines) (repeat chorus) A storm is brewin', Billy Can't you feel it blow? The Devil and the Gentleman Are warm enough below (repeat last 2 lines) (repeat chorus) The sea is runnin', Billy Can't you feel the swell? The Devil and the Gentleman Went arm in arm to Hell (repeat last 2 lines) (repeat chorus) ______________________
Would love to know if anyone knows any more verses, as it seems to be very obscure.
216.14.198.59 (talk) 06:34, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- Many thanks for those lyrics! I think there's another verse which goes something like:
The waves are crashing Billy, Can't you hear them roar? The Devil and the gentleman Are on the fiery shore
When I was a lad, at least one verse was "A Sou'wester blowing, Billy! Can't you hear it roar?" Will ask my sister who can remember every lyric of every song or hymn she learned - but being a shanty the owrds might vary from ship to ship, or port to port. WillE (talk) 13:37, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- I remember it as being sou'wester, too - but like all folk songs and the like, there are probably hundreds of slight variations. It could be that the north wind verse is actually the second verse and I misremembered the verse about the waves crashing. Grutness...wha? 23:54, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Stubs
editHi, Grutness. I think I understand what you're saying. I'll leave stub tags on articles that aren't clearly Start-class. What I don't get is why there's a distinction between "stub-class articles" and "stubs" in the first place. More importantly, I'll have to review where I distinguish between stub-class and start-class. Without a hard-and-fast definition available, defining "more than just 'very basic' " becomes a real headache in 50:50 cases. Mind you, removing the stub tag from Pete Montgomery is probably an indication that I'm starting to focus too much on article length. I might just need to slow down a bit. Cheers. – Liveste (talk • edits) 02:46, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice. I've started assessing articles again, and almost immediately Ralph Love has come up. I'd say it's no longer a stub (it's definitely start-class), but for my own piece of mind I'd appreciate your opinion. Cheers again. – Liveste (talk • edits) 23:15, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Template:Maori-stub
edithttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Maori-stub
Hi James,
As the creator of the Maori-stub I thought I would direct my question to you. I note that Tino Rangatiratanga has been attached to this stub - I think that this is a contentious issue and I am not sure that it accurately represents Moari people as an 'entity', rather a subsection thereof.
Which brings me to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Maori.svg - again I think the file name is misleading.
Not being an expert on this matter I trust that you will handle as you see fit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.97.121.28 (talk) 11:43, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
- I must admit I preferred having the wharenui picture on this stub rather than the TR flag. You're right that the TR flag is not regarded by all maori as being representative of them, though it is acknowledged as such by many. Perhaps, though, this is probably a query better aimed at someone who has more knowledge of Maoritanga than I do (someone like User:Kahuroa, maybe?) Grutness...wha? 00:53, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Cricketing nicknames
editHi, James.
Thanks for the message. The old stuff is held in page histories, as I understand it. I am rather reluctant to give much credence to those items removed by hanging onto them in a more obvious place, as most of them are garbage, and if any are to be re-input, I want to encourage the proper referencing of them. Incidentally, even the article you point to "Lee, Harvey, Oswald" states that "the story goes that Steve Waugh" etc. In my view that reference is not authoritative, any more than "Mo-Yo" was (see comment on the talk page). A direct quote from any of the parties would be far stronger, lest you risk allowing 'facts' like how Monty Lynch was selected for England to stand, because of the number of times it has been quoted as fact by broadcasters.
Will have a think about this before I do any more.
Best,
Will

The article Antonio Sampietro has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Unreferenced BLP, June 2009
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. –– Jezhotwells (talk) 12:38, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
- I have no idea who this person is, nor why you told me about it - I presume you called me in as an admin to check whether this prod should proceed (though that's an unusual procedure). I took less than 10 seconds to verify the information we had from a reliable reference to him online. As such, the prod is declined. Grutness...wha? 12:45, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
- You are being told because you created these pages. I would hope that any admin who finds the prod expired will spend the time to find refs rather than deleting such an article.-gadfium 03:07, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I realised later that it was one of a large batch which I created a couple of years ago, and which another editor I was working with was going to reference (a "prooduction line" method which works well as a double check that all the facts are right). Unfortunately, some of them must've slipped through without being referenced. Grutness...wha? 04:43, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

- Sigh. As above, so below - and equally time-wastingly disruptive. Grutness...wha? 00:02, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
