Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution

edit

  Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Sophocles into Oedipus. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was copied, attribution is not required. — Diannaa (talk) 12:11, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Translations

edit

Do NOT use the {{lang-en}} template for translations; that's why there is {{translation}} (and the shorter {{trans}}). --Kailash29792 (talk) 08:51, 30 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

  Hello, I'm Materialscientist. I wanted to let you know that I reverted one of your recent contributions —specifically this edit to Elton John—because it did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Help desk. Thanks. Materialscientist (talk) 09:38, 14 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @Materialscientist: May I ask why they did not seem constructive? I understand that since the page has been subject to vandalism (I realize you're not insinuating such here) all edits warrant being taken with a grain of salt. However, I argue that my edit, at the very least, contributed enough to not be reverted, in that it: (1) organized/re-worded some information for better effectiveness and reader-friendliness (e.g. breaking up info, dissolving the "Other" section and distributing its info under more relevant sections, etc.); and updated/fixed some citations. I hope such could be given additional consideration. Thanks! Guavabutter (talk) 03:06, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Guavabutter: Just came here after edits you made in Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. I'm not immediately seeing how the edit in Elton John wasn't constructive [1] I know Materialscientist is a recent changes patroller though, so it's possible that it was mistaken for vandalism. Materialscientist notes they have notifications turned off, so you might want to hit them up on their page to ask for further details. --Elephanthunter (talk) 18:24, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Template:Carl Jung sidebar

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Template:Carl Jung sidebar, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.   Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

I noticed your recent edit to Kar seva does not have an edit summary. Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Edit warring

edit

  Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You appear to be repeatedly reverting or undoing other editors' contributions at Kar seva. Although this may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is known as "edit warring" and is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, as it often creates animosity between editors. Instead of reverting, please discuss the situation with the editor(s) involved and try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to lose their editing privileges on that page. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, and violating the three-revert rule is very likely to result in loss of your editing privileges. Thank you. Kautilya3 (talk) 21:37, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Just because there is an Undo button, you can't just keep clicking it. Did you address the problems pointed out in the original revert? Do you have sources? Did you read the cited sources? Wikipedia is a public resource, and you have to repects the rules. You have already received a Discretionary sanctions notice above. Take this as a strong hint. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 21:40, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Kautilya3: Hello, the reason you stated for reverting my original edit was due to the lack of an edit summary. Heeding the issue you raised, I undid the revision to my edit and provided an edit summary, which seemed to be your only concern with my original edit; I did not "just keep clicking" the Undo button. If there is anything else, please advise. Otherwise, I do not understand your discontent. — Guavabutter (talk) 21:51, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
No, the reason I stated was, "Modification of sourced content; generally unexplained edits". It was in my edit summary, which you haven't even bothered to read it seems. You have modified the existing content which was supported by a reliable source. You can't do that. Neither can you add your own WP:OR on the excuse that you are "expaining" things. You can only add content supported by reliable sources. If you write an edit summary saying your are "explaining", that does not make it ok. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 21:55, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Recent edit reversion

edit

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.

I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.

I do occasionally make mistakes. We get hundreds of reports of potential copyright violations every week, and sometimes there are false positives, for a variety of reasons. (Perhaps the material was moved from another Wikipedia article, or the material was properly licensed but the license information was not obvious, or the material is in the public domain but I didn't realize it was public domain, and there can be other situations generating a report to our Copy Patrol tool that turn out not to be actual copyright violations.) If you think my edit was mistaken, please politely let me know and I will investigate. S Philbrick(Talk) 14:13, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Political ponerology

edit

Sorry colleague, I had to undo your merge, because these are completely different subjects despite the same name. In fact, I split the orifinal article in the first place. What is more, this subject seems to have low notability, because it looks more like a conspiracy theory, and the only independent ref comes from a website with strong indication this is a conspirologists' nest (and I found that some agree withe me ). The book is free to read, and frankly, it has LOTS of dubious places. For a while I thought the book itself is a hoax, but was lazy to deep further. Therefore I am quietly waiting somebody notices it and lists for AfD. (It was speedied once by a drive-by account who seems to know something, but the person did not press it harder.) Conflict of interest policy

edit

  Hello, Guavabutter. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. --Hipal (talk) 19:43, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Hipal, I appreciate the rules and completely understand the concern. I do not have a conflict of interest insofar as having a connection or affiliation to any article I've contributed to thus far. My activity on Wikipedia has only ever been a personal, voluntary hobby: I do not in any way hold a membership, employment, or any other contract/relationship with any person or organization whose article I have contributed to; I have not done anything on Wikipedia with the intention or for the purpose of promoting anyone or anything; and I have not received any compensation for anything I've done on Wikipedia. Thanks and enjoy your day! — Guavabutter (talk) 02:14, 9 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your response. Glad we have that out of the way.
The reason that I brought it up is your use of poor or promotional sources. If you work from reliable, independent sources, you shouldn't go far wrong. (WP:RSP and WP:RSN are helpful in determining if a source is reliable.) If such sources cannot be found, the associated content most likely doesn't belong in an encyclopedia article. --Hipal (talk) 02:24, 9 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@UnitedStatesian: Hello, thanks for raising the concern. While I do add non-existent categories to pages with the intent to create that new category, I realize that I've ended up adding some undefined categories before without going on to create them. Stub at Nickle Lake

edit

Thank you for adding the cats to Nickle Lake. I removed the stub tag you added, though. Have a read at Wikipedia:Content assessment. A stub is "A very basic description of the topic. Meets none of the Start-Class criteria." A start is "An article that is developing but still quite incomplete. It may or may not cite adequate reliable sources. The article has a meaningful amount of good content, but it is still weak in many areas." If anything, Nickle Lake is almost a C: "The article is substantial but is still missing important content or contains irrelevant material. The article should have some references to reliable sources, but may still have significant problems or require substantial cleanup. The article cites more than one reliable source and is better developed in style, structure, and quality than Start-Class, but it fails one or more of the criteria for B-Class. It may have some gaps or missing elements, or need editing for clarity, balance, or flow." Also, when you do add a stub tag to an article, please hop on over to its talk page to change the class there too. Thanks and happy editting! Masterhatch (talk) 18:39, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Also, stub tags go at the very bottom of an article. I fixed it at Braddock Reservoir Have a read at MOS:ORDER. Thanks! Masterhatch (talk) 18:46, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

I see you're still putting the cats and stub tags in the wrong order, such as at Henday Converter Station and many other articles. Please have a look at MOS:ORDER and can you go back and fix them?. Thank you! Masterhatch (talk) 23:04, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Cats at wrong spot (still)

edit

Hello, I brought this to your attention a while ago but you still seem to be getting it wrong. Stub tags go below categories. But you keep putting the categories below the stub tags. I fixed some of them for you at SamiYoni, Poutchine au sac, and House dish. It says you're nitpicky on your user page so please see MOS:ORDER and make sure you put things in the right order. Masterhatch (talk) 11:28, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Masterhatch:, I typically edit using the visual editor where I place stubs as furthest to the end as possible. Guavabutter (talk) 23:42, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Maybe using the visual editor isn't such a great idea when adding cats. I just fixed this one, which you had added the cat below the stub tags after your last response in this thread. Masterhatch (talk) 06:26, 8 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Umm, I see you're still putting categories below the stub tags. Please stop. As I said before, if the issue is the visual editor, then maybe it's best to not use it when adding cats. I just fixed Dauphin River. Can you go back and fix the rest? Thank you! Masterhatch (talk) 03:25, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Masterhatch If categories were not meant to be used with the visual editor, then the option should not exist. This is an issue for Wikipedia to solve if it is an issue. I edit using the visual editor and add categories using the visual editor.
According to MOS:ORDER, "While categories are entered on the editing page ahead of stub templates, they appear on the visual page in a separate box after the stub templates. One of the reasons this happens is that every stub template generates a stub category, and those stub categories appear after the "main" categories. Another is that certain bots and scripts are set up to expect the categories, stubs and interlanguage links to appear in that order, and will reposition them if they don't. Therefore, any manual attempt to change the order is futile unless the bots and scripts are also altered." Guavabutter (talk) 17:25, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

According to the page's history ([2]), it was you who made the main edit for this section back in September 2021. Thank you for this incredibly detailed edit (especially the table of projects by sector); the edit summary you put down, "Added some further information/content with references, as well as update to organization", doesn't do it justice.
