Please provide an edit summary

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.  V60 VTalk · VDemolitions 20:48, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Interstate 54 Business (El Cajon, California)

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Interstate 54 Business (El Cajon, California), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. -Happy5214 16:17, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
You can do a link from your main user page to the subpages by starting the link with a slash. E.g. to make a link from your user page to your Projects page, type [[/Projects]]. —Scott5114 02:50, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

To get onto IRC:

  • Go into your buddy list, and in the Accounts menu, select "Add/Edit".
  • A dialog will pop up; from there hit "Add".
  • Configure the following:
    • The protocol is "IRC".
    • The screen name is your Wikipedia username (Happy5214)
    • The server is "irc.freenode.net"
    • Leave password and local alias blank, and then hit save.
  • You should be able to get onto IRC now; just hit close on the Accounts dialog.

Now, a chat window should appear. If you get something like:

freenode-connect: Received CTCP 'VERSION' (to Happy5214) from freenode-connect

you are good to go. Simply type /j #wikipedia-en-roads-us into the message box, and you should be in. V60 干什么? · 喝掉的酒 · ER 4 02:22, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

An important letter

Dear roads editor,

You may have noticed some changes at WP:USRD lately. Some of them, like the cleanup templates and the stub templates, have been astounding and great. Unfortunately, others have been disturbing.

This has become evidenced by the departure of a few prominent editors at USRD, a few RFC's, and much fighting among USRD editors.

After the second RFC, many of us found the opportunity to take a step away from Wikipedia for a while--as a self-imposed wikibreak, or possibly on vacation.

The result of such introspection was that many of us were placing ourselves in a "walled garden" and on a self-imposed pedestal of authority over the roads department. Also, we were being hostile to a few users who were not agreeing with us.

In fact, IRC has been the main incarnation of this "walled garden." Decisions have been made there to conduct grudges and prejudices against a few valued USRD users with poor justification.

For this, we have come to apologize. We have come to ask your forgiveness.

In addition to this, we hope to work as one USRD team from now on and to encourage cooperation instead of the promotion of interests.

All users are welcome to collaborate on IRC, the newsletter, or anywhere else at USRD.

In the future, please feel free to approach us about any issues you may have.

Regards,

USH and IH tags

What are you doing? [1] is wrong; the USH and IH tags are not to be changed, if for no other reason than the "state=US" and "state=Interstate" code are better off not shown to the average user due to the potential for confusion. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 22:05, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Then, why couldn't you have just put a note on the template saying that??
-Happy5214 22:08, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
I did in my reversion of your adding the deprecated tag. As for before that; yes, a note could have been added to the talk page, but I didn't foresee anyone trying to convert it. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 22:10, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Djjp02228

A tag has been placed on Djjp02228, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this:   which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the article's talk page directly to give your reasons. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. DASHBot (talk) 06:00, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Oh wow, I had forgotten all about that. It's funny how things work; that project was how I started editing road articles, which were then part of the reason that I started writing articles on communities, and now I spend most of my time here on those projects. FM 1957

I've placed the article on hold. You can see my review comments at Talk:Farm to Market Road 1957/GA1. Please note that some of my comments are suggestions that go above the required GA criteria. However, I think they are items that help to make the article better, and more deserving of being called a "good article", even if not required to call it a "Good Article". Imzadi 1979  19:30, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

As an unrelated comment, normally the banner shell is only used when there are three or more banners on a talk page. If there are only one or two, there isn't the need to collapse them. Imzadi 1979  19:38, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

I-96 FT

I noticed this edit, and while I'm flattered that you had the same idea as myself, you're missing a handful of articles that would be needed for any GT/FT on I-96. The business loops/spurs of I-196 no longer have their own list, but I-496's loop, the Capitol Loop does have a FA. I-696's former spur is now M-10. A section of I-96 is now M-5. No, I don't own the articles in question, but I have invested the most effort on getting Michigan highways up to GA, A or FA assessments. Common courtesy would have been to ping me before taking an action that looks like you'll capitalize on the hard work of others. You might want to ping Rschen7754 (talk · contribs) about highways in the San Diego area since he has been working on several of those articles himself. Imzadi 1979  03:31, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

I echo a lot of Imzadi1979's comments. That's a very strict definition of San Diego you're using - what about California State Route 78, for example? Ditto about the credit issue - drive-by featured topic nominations are intellectually dishonest. Furthermore, I think I would be lucky to even get all of the articles you mention to GA by the end of 2013. --Rschen7754 04:09, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
I was planning on contacting you (Imzadi) earlier today. I personally have no plans whatsoever to complete or nominate these. These are just for planning. Feel free to move them to your respective userspaces. The list mentioned as the lead for the San Diego highways only includes those in the city of San Diego itself. I do think it needs to be expanded, however. -happy5214 05:23, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
Okay, sounds good. There's actually a place at WP:USRD/FT, if you want to move them there. -Rschen7754 05:25, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Lua and Routelist row

Thanks for all your work on {{routelist row}}. You seem to have picked up Lua pretty quickly! I went ahead and published the sandbox version to template space, so your code is now live.

If you get a chance, do you think you could go back and comment the code? (I know programmers hate hearing this. Please don't hit me.) Since this is USRD's first Lua template, people will be looking at it a lot as an example when we convert bigger templates in the future, so it would behoove us to self-document so that other editors can easily grasp the more subtle points of the language and the MediaWiki environment. I thought about adding the comments myself, but I'm afraid I might misinterpret some things and lead people astray. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 11:12, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

That's actually the intended result. The "PHW" type wasn't in the source template (it's PH), so an error for an invalid type is the correct result. I'll add PHW in a minute. All uses of PHW are now gone. -happy5214 06:35, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Will do, thank you. -happy5214 05:36, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
There were dozens of route related errors in there earlier, but it doesn't look like you did anything, so maybe someone else fixed it. If users of your scripts are likely to generate errors, then I would suggest adding some error trapping to your script with informative messages about what the problem might be, as well as a dedicated error category rather than simply throwing things to the main scripts error cat. Dragons flight (talk) 05:49, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
Were they Canadian highways? Those all suffered from one specific error where the province parameter was being completely discounted.

Infobox road and Infobox Australian road

There's a discussion started at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Australian Roads#Infobox, and there's some talk about the possibility of migrating that template over in the future. We still need to figure out where there are opportunities for updates to move forward. A lot of stuff had been implemented in the past, but any discussions and progress had been stalled.

I know that the color scheme from IAusR is in IR, or at least it was. We had also implemented |restrictions= to account for restrictions placed on highways. This was essentially a streamlined implementation of some parameters added to IAusR from the former {{infobox Outback Track}} for permits, limited facilities or limited fuel services. The concept has been useful in various American articles. I'll start looking through the old discussions, but your expertise in coding up solutions in the template may prove valuable in the near future. Imzadi 1979  03:43, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Adding route types

Could you look at the couple errors in Category:Infobox road transclusion errors (the & section)? I'm pretty sure you've converted the subtemplates to Lua and I am not sure how to fix it. –Fredddie 01:57, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

First of all, the original template would not have handled those cases any better. I   Fixed the Dough sandbox issue, but the {{Routelist row}} template should be switched to {{Jct}}-series templates, as the sandbox uses Jct-style syntax. -happy5214 07:36, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

I had a thought... give that we now have |key= and |keys=, and they're so similar, can we rename the former to |notes= ? If so, can you add in a tracking category, and then I'll manually convert any articles using |key= to instead use |notes=. Thanks, Imzadi 1979  13:24, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

I'll look into it later. After the issues with key ordering, I'd like to have a discussion about it before making any changes. -happy5214 14:53, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
It was just a thought since key vs. keys is an easy typo to make, and it seems that the key function is not used very much, so it wouldn't be hard to swap out the parameter name... (since that's all that's being changed is the name of a parameter) Imzadi 1979  15:35, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

routelist row

{{Routelist row}} appears to not support display of banners above shields—see List of U.S. Highways in Oklahoma's US-75A listing. When you get a chance could you look into this? —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 10:15, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

The easiest answer is that banners are provided by {{jct/plate}}, which is not used by {{routelist row}}. I haven't done any research into the banner code, other than knowing they'll eventually be converted to Lua, so you might want to ask Fredddie. -happy5214 11:37, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
It doesn't support them because it doesn't call banners at all. –Fredddie 11:59, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Module:Jct/USA/data/sandbox

Do we need to add a "name" parameter? I'm thinking of the name that appears in {{infobox road}} under the shield, which is usually different from both the link and abbreviation (e.g. for an Oklahoma SH the page is at "Oklahoma State Highway %route%", "State Highway %route%" appears in the infobox, and "SH-%route%" is the abbr). I'm operating under the assumption that the data page is going to be used for both templates, if not, please beat me with a stick for making dumb assumptions. Thanks. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 21:24, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Also, I added some kinda dodgy code for Kansas. You should double-check to make sure I didn't ruin everything. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 21:50, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, these strings will be used for both templates. I suppose you could add the names, although I'm not exactly sure yet how I'll use them. As for your Kansas code, your aliasing technique is perfectly legal. But I'd prefer putting an empty string instead of nil where there is nothing to be returned. -happy5214 06:56, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

A couple issues we're running into:

  1. {{Infobox road/NJ/link CR}} migrating that to Lua
  2. Will WI.MN = MN.MN work so long as MN.MN is defined?
  3. If so, would it be a good idea to create a generic set for, say, the Great River Road. All the states that link to the Great River Road use the same shields/links/eveything. Then we could have:
XX.GRR = {shield = "GreatRiverRoad.svg",
link = "Routing of the Great River Road",
           abbr = "Great River Road"}

IA.GRR = XX.GRR
IL.GRR = XX.GRR

I'm sure I'll think of some more questions to ask you. I don't know if I'll be around on IRC when you usually are. –Fredddie 01:28, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

  1. I haven't decided if ifexists will be supported. Otherwise, just encapsulate it into an bracketed if statement.
  2. Yes, that is legal.
  3. A local GRR = ... at the beginning would probably work better.

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:29, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Re: Module:Jct/shield

Oh, I didn't know that. Do you happen to know why? Is the problem that large route listings will go over the expensive function limit? I added the existence check as part of filling out the Ohio township and county route tables in Module:Road data/strings/USA/OH. Unfortunately, the repertoire of county and especially township routes at Commons is still quite incomplete, so without some sort of existence check, there are going to be plenty of red image links scattered about the Ohio state route pages. Perhaps we could limit the existence check to rare types like CR and TR? If not, I may need some help completing Commons:Category:Diagrams of Ohio county route markers and Commons:Category:Diagrams of Ohio township route markers. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 03:57, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Thus far I'd only been drawing diagrams of shields that I had found photographic evidence of, to avoid guessing the design and dimensions. I've added a hook and made a couple tweaks so that Ohio State Route 377 won't incorrectly show the blue pentagon for an Athens county route that I haven't added an image for. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 05:57, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Module:Jcttop/core

Why does this use <table> rather than {|? For whatever reason, the former won't allow table wikicode to be used for any rows, but the latter allows both table wikicode and html inside the table. --NE2 21:11, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Module:Jctint/core

on line 271, if type is not in the table, then typeData will be nil, which causes a script error on the next two lines (e.g., Georgia State Route 383). of course, it would be good to track and fix these, but it would also be good if the module would fail more gracefully. I would suggest adding an 'if typeData then' before lines 272 and 273, with an 'else' to add a tracking category. I have cleaned up about twenty of these today, and plan to clean up more, but until I can process them all, it would be good to replace the script error with a tracking category. Frietjes (talk) 19:27, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

it may also be useful to transform to lowercase so that this fix is not needed. Frietjes (talk) 19:32, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

I know you have a lot on your plate, but I wanted to ask you about this template. Currently, it is a wrapper for {{Jct|noshield=yes}}. Would it be simpler/better for the long run if Roadlink didn't try to call any part of the shield setup? Or does {{{noshield}}} turn that off already? I get the feeling that using the noshield parameter uses up more resources than writing something that doesn't involve the shield setup at all would. –Fredddie 03:10, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

The first line of the shield function in Module:Jct checks for the existence of {{{noshield}}}, and preempts the parser call if it does exist. That being said, the current version of the module does not preempt the parser call for the banner. That issue has been fixed in the sandbox. I've also rewritten {{roadlink/sandbox}} to directly invoke the Lua module. Finally, isn't roadlink deprecated? -happy5214 06:58, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Routelist row Template/Module

Hi,

{{Routelist row}} is being used in List of U.S. Routes in Ohio and as per the discussion here they don't think some of the routes have shields. However I've been looking though the module code and can't see if its possible to disable the shield. I saw you have been involved with these templates, so thought you may know the answer? Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 15:14, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Fixed That should have been added a long time ago. Just set |noshield= to any non-blank value. I already did that for the list you linked here. Thanks for bringing this up! -happy5214 21:21, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

d:Module:Roadtable row

Would you mind trying to fix this? I tried for several hours today, and got the labels working again, but the rest of the data is incorrect. --Rschen7754 22:42, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

OK turnpike shields

The shields for the Creek and Muskogee Turnpikes are being replaced with SH-364 and SH-351 shields, respectively. For now the article is remaining at the turnpike names. Would it be possible to code the data module to automatically display the correct shields for these two turnpikes? Otherwise, I'll just have to go through them and replace everything with |SH|364|, which would be undesirable so long as the articles remain at the current names. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 19:35, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

It should be. Do you need this change immediately? -happy5214testing 07:23, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Module:Infobox road

Hello, I think you migrated the browse section of Template:Infobox road to a module. It turns out that some of the existing infoboxes with multiple Template:Infobox road/browselinks/USA do not display properly, such as one in State Route 313 (New York–Vermont). The penultimate version of Rhode Island Route 78 (diff) and State Route 74 (New York–Vermont) (diff) also had this error, but I corrected it by requiring that all the browse items be in one line. I think it has something to do with where the HTML table tag ends in the infobox when there are more than one Template:Infobox road/browselinks/USA used in the browse section. I wonder if you know what went wrong. Thanks. Chinissai (talk) 17:07, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Just touching base

As the primary maintainer of {{Infobox Australian road}} I'm happy to work with you on incorporating that template into a Lua version of {{Infobox road}}. My main concern is that, because most editors are not programmers, we need to ensure that filling out an infobox is easy for them. For this reason I've tried to automate things in Infobox Australian road as much as possible and I'd like not to lose that. I even incorporated code to use KML data at one stage but that was lost when people at {{Attached KML}} decided to take ownership of things. --AussieLegend () 04:06, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Wikibase lua stuff

Hi! Would you mind taking a look at [2]? It seems Infobox road/map may be affected. I'd only worry about the ones on enwiki and simplewiki, though if you want to fix the others, that's great too. --Rschen7754 19:35, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Try the sandbox I created and see if that works: Module:Infobox road/map/sandbox. -happy5214 20:17, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
Ah okay, you're aware of it then. Just making sure :) --Rschen7754 22:12, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Not exactly related, but this is amazing: @TCN7JM and Scott5114: If you go to [3] and run a query (say for all items with a certain value of P16/highway system), and then click "Download" you get a text file mapping item numbers to labels, in rough numerical order. Should make creating those roadtable lists easier! --Rschen7754 05:16, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Very nice! If it wasn't 11 p.m. right now, I'd probably check that out. TCN7JM 05:18, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Cool, so we can do queries now (with an API!). Now, if I can figure out a way to pull assessments somehow, it would be possible to calculate the wikiwork of the result of any query. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 10:26, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
