Bus templates

- I will need assistance with Template:Metlink Via as I'm not sure of the best way to essentially sum up locations along the route based on Template:TL Route Via. I originally thought that I should sum it up by suburbs, but upon second thought, major type generators, such as Shopping Centres, Railway Stations, Universities, Landmarks would be the better option. I'm working on the Template:Metlink Op Hours to sum up the hours of operations. I will probably need some help with Template:Metlink Type to sum up the type of service the bus route such as Smartbus (700), Trainlink (796), Nightrider (970), Express (350), Limited Stops (901?), Loop (671), All Stops (? routes that run on a frequent interval, 15 mins or better? on weekdays), Local (704?, those that fall outside this?) etc. For the All Stops and Local categories, this is where I think the issue will be, as they aren't that kind to summarise the intervals. Would a different system be needed for this e.g. Primary (those running 15 mins are better), Secondary (30 mins are better) and Tertiary (60 mins are better) be more appropriate? - Just one thing to be careful of, we need to avoid the Wikipedia:No original research guidelines - in other words we are pretty much stuck using the Metlink classifications and not make up our own (like the Primary / Secondary / Tertiary). For the 'via' you could just have a list of places along the way, you don't want it to be too long, as you end up just retyping what the official site has.
- I have filled up the empty templates with some filler text just for now. I have also made the template conditional, so if there is not next in the 'via' or 'Op Hours' option then the section is not displayed. 'service' defaults to 'Bus'. Wongm (talk) 04:22, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestions and assistance. At least now the bus operators page are consistent, with at least destination and origin set, and makes it easier to change to the route information when all the new bus contracts looks like taking place start of next year. I just remembered Template:MetlinkBus exists as well - it outputs the Metlink webpage URLs - hopefully we can work out a way to roll this into the whole thing as well. With a new 'front end' template and few more sub-templates for more data, you could move List of Melbourne bus routes to use the same data as well. Wongm (talk) 05:55, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yeh I was going to plan to eventually integrate Template:MetlinkBus which isn't getting used as it was intended to be (it was a mess trying to edit when I touched it, for new routes, hence I haven't bothered since). I was going to wait until the Beta Timetables which were recently introduced to be finalised first which is greatly detailed in PDF format, before even considering mucking around with integrating links, otherwise there will be another case of broken hyperlinks. Just need to make sure there is a decent, usable Template:Metlink Display set up first, so that we can try to redo the layout for List of Melbourne bus routes again, so that when the new bus contracts take place start of 2009 (with all the current contracts expire end of 2008), things are easily manageable. --Huyie (talk) 06:15, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Hello- I have undone your edits to the above article on the basis that it introduced a lot of broken links via the template(s) (304, 305 + many). Some time ago this article had all links to Metlink correct, because I sorted out the template. (even today's 902 service) and most suburb, railway stations use the single entry template. I did think the multi-nested dayglo orange version had pretty much been deprecated and replaced by the simpler version, although it does still exist on a handful of articles that no-one has bothered to change. I think this would need a discussion before any change from its current version. I dont have any particular interest in this article, so no revert war coming on. - Was planning to through all the broken links for the Metlink templates after the introduction of the new Wyndham services to avoid confusion. The time it takes to clean up the MetlinkBus template is too time consuming when I went through the list a couple of years ago, hence why I don't bother touching it anymore. Links easily get superseded, and when routes disappear, but more so when they modified with route extensions, these easily get dismissed with outdated information. Close paraphrasing
editI appreciate your efforts at rewriting this article, but unfortunately your rewrite was not usable, as it followed too closely still on the source, remaining an unusable unauthorized derivative work. For an example of close paraphrasing, consider the following: The source says:
By November 1949 the last of the families had moved out and thirty male patients were transferred from Mont Park Hospital. Despite this large parts of the hospital remained unfinished and a low Government priority. However a fire at Beechworth hospital forced a change in thinking and additional funds were located to open wards at Larundel for Beechworth’s patients.
Your proposed rewrite said:
...by November 1949, these families had progressively moved out, patients were transferred across and bought to Larundel from other psychiatric facilities. This was despite the fact that the hospital itself remained largely incomplete. But due to a fire at the Beechworth Asylum, additional funds were later allocated by the 36th Premier of Victoria, Thomas Hollway, to further open wards at Larundel to accommodate the Beechworth patients, that saw Larundel towards completion as initially envisaged.
There are other passages that similarly followed too closely, including (but not limited to) this:
During the late 1990s...there was a strong push away from institutionalised psychiatric patient care, with a greater focus towards a community based care approach. As a result, Victoria saw a progressive decline in Victoria’s mental hospitals due to these closures. Many of these patients were later transferred to the nearby Austin Hospital.
The source says:

While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. When you take a copyrighted original and revise, annotate, elaborate, or otherwise modify it, you create a "derivative work", which only the original copyright holder has the right to authorize. It looks very much as though you are attempting to erase copyright problems line by line, which is practically impossible to do.
The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism".
Since your proposed is not usable, it has been deleted. The article evaluation period has expired, but I will relist it to give you more time with this, since you do seem to be motivated to rework. Displaying bus schedules in articles
editI'm a little surprised by the extensive lists of bus schedules in Melbourne articles. They seem excessively detailed in most cases, as if the idea is to provide a bus schedule to potential passengers, the job of the bus company, rather than write an encyclopedia article about it.
I have raised the issue at the Village Pump, here. Please feel free to comment there.
