Controversial topic area alerts

edit

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor. — Newslinger talk 11:01, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sockpuppet investigation

edit

An editor has opened an investigation into sockpuppetry by you. Sockpuppetry is the use of more than one Wikipedia account in a manner that contravenes community policy. The investigation is being held at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Wikistarred 8604, where the editor who opened the investigation has presented their evidence. Please make sure you make yourself familiar with the guide to responding to investigations, and then feel free to offer your own evidence or to submit comments that you wish to be considered by the Wikipedia administrator who decides the result of the investigation. If you have been using multiple accounts (in a manner contrary to Wikipedia policy), please go to the investigation page and verify that now. Leniency is usually shown to those who promise not to do so again, or who did so unwittingly, but the abuse of multiple accounts is taken very seriously by the Wikipedia community.

Please do not add original research or novel syntheses of published material to articles as you apparently did to Godi media. Please cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. Also note that it is not helpful for Wikipedia's readers to insert sources that have no connection to the surrounding context. "'Godi media' which is active in the country not from today, but for the last 70 years." is a sentence fragment which makes no sense – and again, Wikipedia can't say anything about implications of a source, unless other reliable secondary sources have already discussed such implications. bonadea contributions talk 12:18, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wait a second, it was a quote from an article published on the Zee News site on which was supplemented from the source. Iamyourfriend108 (talk) 12:48, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please see my comment above. While the quote did have a source, it was a sentence fragment (from the heading) which was unintegrated in the text and made very little sense. The sourced quote was followed by an unsourced interpretation – the sentence even began "By implication...". --bonadea contributions talk 14:19, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, got it. You're right. Will be careful next time. Good day! Iamyourfriend108 (talk) 04:24, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

BTW, I need a small help. Can you tell me if we could use Hindi articles as a source for English pages. (I am new to Wikipedia and don't know about the rules much) Iamyourfriend108 (talk) 04:29, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, sources can be in languages other than English (although English-language sources are preferred). Note, however, that the sources must meet these criteria. Many sources are not reliable – you can look at this list to get guidance about some (not all!) major sources, and how they can be used in Wikipedia articles. What was the purpose of adding comingsoon.zee5.com, a website with no content, as a source? Providing a 30-minute video to support a brief statement is also not helpful to our readers. --bonadea contributions talk 16:34, 16 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Oh, OK. Iamyourfriend108 (talk) 04:22, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Will keep in mind next time. Iamyourfriend108 (talk) 04:23, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to violate Wikipedia's no original research policy by adding your personal analysis or synthesis into articles, as you did at Ravish Kumar, you may be blocked from editing. Tayi Arajakate Talk 07:26, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

How is that original research? It was supported by reliable sources. Iamyourfriend108 (talk) 08:17, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

OK, got it. Another editor said me that the edit at ravish Kumar was synthesis of different sources. If that was the case, I apologise and promise to not repeat this mistake. However, please do guide me on certain topics. I am a bit confused sometimes. I will be asking for help whenever I need it. Iamyourfriend108 (talk) 08:30, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Iamyourfriend108! Your additions to Sudhir Chaudhary (journalist) have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. All other images must be made available under a free and open license that allows commercial and derivative reuse to be used on Wikipedia.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 11:48, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
