Proposed deletion of Xcos

edit

The article Xcos has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable: no reliable sources, no indication of notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. It's always great to see people not just go on a rampage when their changes or contributions are reverted, but instead ask why and start from the benefit of the doubt that there's a good reason. That's one of the best parts of Wikipedia editing! Lawikitejana (talk) 04:04, 21 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Evidence

edit

What is your evidence that the water level drop in Boiling Lake in Dominica is in any way related to the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake? Just because two events occur one some time after the other does not mean they are related. Dominica is on the other side of the globe in a completely different fault line system. You would need solid scientific evidence to make the claim that the two events are related. Otherwise, please, remove the item. (Paaskynen (talk) 04:41, 27 May 2014 (UTC))Reply

I am aware of correlation does not imply causation, in fact I teach the subject, which is why I asked you for evidence. You listed the Boiling Lake water level drop a precursor to the earthquake. That indicates there is a correlation. If you have no evidence of a correlation, then mentioning Boiling Lake in connection with the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami is not warranted. Many things happened all over the world in the days before the tsunami like the 2004 Christmas Eve snowstorm to mention just one. (Paaskynen (talk) 08:49, 27 May 2014 (UTC))Reply
Fair enough. It seems another user has already removed that part. --Ixfd64 (talk) 16:44, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Ixfd64. If there is no consensus for the language to be the primary topic for "Pashto", can you finish the closure by turning Pashto into a redirect to the correct primary topic, or moving the disambiguation page Pashto (disambiguation) to the base name? Templates used when patrolling

edit

May I ask what software you use, if any, when patrolling recent changes? Looks like Huggle doesn't recognize it and will issue the same level warning... see here. — MusikAnimal talk 20:42, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • I usually use Huggle 2 (the Huggle 3 interface is a little confusing for me) for patrolling, although I'm currently doing it manually as I haven't had the chance to install the required .NET Framework on this computer yet. Other than that, I use the pop-ups to preview edits as it's somewhat faster than loading the whole diff. --Ixfd64 (talk) 20:46, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
I see. I'm guessing it goes off of edit summaries, then, to determine the last level warning issued. It is able to detect Twinkle warnings, if you'd prefer that over manually templating. What templates are you using? WP:WARNING are the standard ones. Cheers — MusikAnimal talk 22:20, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm not 100% familiar with how Huggle detects the warning level either, but I'm guessing it relies on the HTML comments that are left when the templates are substituted. As for your question, I usually use the original "test" templates instead of the standard {{uw-*}} ones:
{{test}} (standard, although I'll use {{uw-v1}} if I'm sure the user is not experimenting)
{{test2}} (adding nonsense) and {{test2a}} (removing content)
{{test3}}
{{test4}} (last warning) and {{test4im}} (only warning)
{{test5}} (block notice)
I think the original templates are more specific and do a better job of explaining to the user what they're doing wrong, although that's just my opinion. --Ixfd64 (talk) 23:13, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Got ya. I can look into why they aren't detected by the semi-automated tools. Other than that I've no problem with them, except {{test5}}. I'm in favour of WP:FRIENDLYBLOCKS that tell the user how to make an unblock request. Looks like a redirect to {{uw-block}} was proposed over a year ago, but no feedback came about. What are your thoughts? Thanks — MusikAnimal talk 15:40, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
It probably wouldn't hurt to merge {{test5}} into {{uw-block}}. The discussion seems to have stalled; perhaps we could try to start it up again. --Ixfd64 (talk) 16:53, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Done at WT:UW#Redirect test5 to uw-block. Cheers — MusikAnimal talk 17:40, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

edit

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

edit

Hello, Ixfd64. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Bonnevilla page deletion

edit

Hi @Ixfd64: , I am writing you regarding the deleted page Bonnevilla, I was wondering if you could take into consideration what happened with that page, the page had been reviewed and updated several times.

In the Spanish wiki it was deleted, it was my first article and I was missing vital information, I tried fixing it but it was deleted again without being reviewed, this made it look like I was just creating spam information, I stopped attempting to work with it, on the mean time the article in English was much better and was fixed by several editors.
Then a user from the Spanish Wiki that thought that I was just spamming started attacking my page, using an IP address and not his username, he proposed it for deletion due to insufficient references, every time I would try to add more references he would undo the edit and after the 7 days the page was deleted, he insulted me using profanity when I would try to update the page, and kept spamming me on the page, I am here only to learn and develop myself as an editor, I have created 2 other pages Nach , and Akil Ammar, that have been reviewed positively, I would only like a fair chance to fix the Bonnevilla page, and if something can be done to prevent that IP user from continue harassing me, any recommendations from you would be great. Thank you very much for taking your time to assist me. Herrkhor (talk) 18:16, 26 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

edit

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

edit

Hi Ixfd64.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
