Categories

edit

Categories are a hierarchy. We create sub-categories that are more specific for various reasons. Most of the time, an article should appear only in the most specific category of a particular "tree". Please see WP:DIFFUSE for further details.

So, Joey Bishop is in Category:Jewish American comedians, which is a sub-category of Category:American Jews by occupation, which is a sub-category of American Jews, so the article does not need to be in those higher-level categories (see the blue-box notes at the top of the categories).

Please sign your messages on discussion (talk) pages by adding a space and four tildes to the end of the last line of your message, like this:

This is the last line of the message. ~~~~

The four tildes will be automatically converted to a signature that contains your linked username and a timestamp, which helps readers understand who said what.

Nothing should follow the tildes. If you forget to sign, though, the SineBot (or someone like me) will come along and sign it for you at some point, using a template. Please don't go back and try to "fix" it afterwards – wiki syntax can be complicated (especially for a newbie) and it usually ends up being incorrect (as at Talk:Morgan Edge, which I fixed again).

In general, please see WP:REDACT for information about how to edit posts on discussion pages that may have been seen or responded to by others. Thanks.   —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 19:00, 18 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

In case you're using a mobile and don't happen to check the rest of the WP:DIFFUSE page, WP:SPECIFICCAT is the more general section on the "more-specific" concept. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 19:35, 18 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Talk page editing

edit

As I asked above, please do not edit discussions that other editors may have seen or to which others have responded, especially not archived discussions, as you did at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive 1096 here and here. I reverted the edits, and you did it again here and again here (reverted by Pahunkat). Please stop. Please also see WP:EW and WP:3RR. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 22:29, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jack1578! The thread you created at the Wikipedia:Teahouse, Why Joey Bishop and Larry Bishop was remove from the category of american jews.?, has been archived because there was no discussion for a few days (usually at least two days, and sometimes four or more). You can still find the archived discussion here. If you have any additional questions that weren't answered then, please feel free to create a new thread.

The archival was done by Lowercase sigmabot III, and this notification was delivered by Muninnbot, both automated accounts. You can opt out of future notifications by placing {{bots|deny=Muninnbot}} here on your user talk page. Muninnbot (talk) 19:04, 20 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
