Pronunciations

It's nice to know that Brits mangle foreign words as well as Americans do. That Nicaragua pronuncation accounts for why the Brits who advertise the Jaguar car say "Jag-you-ahr" instead of "Jag-wahr". I usually hear it as "nicker-ahg-wuh", which could sound kind of funny to Brits who think of "knicker" as underwear. I think actual Nicaraguans pronounce it "nee-carr-AH-wah". I would say "tords" is more hickish in America. In the midwest I often hear it (and say it myself) as "t'wards". It's funny the Brits take such great care to enunciate "too-wards", while slurring words like "forecastle" into "foke-suhl" or "Worcester" into "Wooster". Baltiyul in Tibetan Script

Please could you write Baltiyul (Balti language for Baltistan) in the Tibetan script please? So far, it is only written on the page in Arabic script, despite widespread use of the Tibetan script for this language. Thanks in advance! --AnonyLog (talk) 19:54, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Tibetan key

Hi Jakob,

WP:IPA for Tibetan was based on our ST article, and it could really use some help, in both the C's and V's. It lists significant allophones, not phonemes. ("Significant" from the POV of a native speaker of English, that is.) — kwami (talk) 18:06, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Tibetan has a pharyngeal stop? That's news to me.

Mostly a glide (approximant),maybe a fricative occasionally, not a stop. Jakob37 (talk) 02:45, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Proposed Tibetan naming conventions

A while back, I posted a new proposal for Tibetan naming conventions, i.e. conventions that can be used to determine the most appropriate titles for articles related to the Tibetan region. This came out of discussions about article titles on Talk:Qamdo and Talk:Lhoka (Shannan) Prefecture. I hope that discussions on the proposal's talk page will lead to consensus in favour of making these conventions official, but so far only a few editors have left comments. If you would be interested in taking a look at the proposed naming conventions and giving your opinion, I would definitely appreciate it.
