Adoption
editJames, I would be honored to "adopt" you! I've received all kinds of help and "the kindness of strangers" in my Wikipedia career, so I'm more than happy to "pay it forward", so to speak. But enough with the cliches! ;) I see that you're already familiar with some editing tools, so you're already far ahead of most "newbie" editors. I also see that you're an English teacher. See, one of my weaknesses as an editor is writing, so I need all kinds of help in that area. One of the articles I've taken on failed its FAC for that very reason. So perhaps part of the reason I'm agreeing to adopting you is selfish; I need all kinds of feedback and assistance, and believe me, I'll ask for it! You might want to think about getting involved in some copyediting, or peer reviewing. I could also see you becoming active in reviewing articles for GA and/or FA.
I like to keep things informal, so to start, just let me know how I can help. I'm willing to answer any question you have; if I can't answer, I'll do my best to find the answer or to ask some of my WP mentors. Let me know! --Christine (talk) 04:47, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Hello, Jamesnorwood, I see you are a newbie on en.WP. I see from your user page that you are looking for advice, so let my mention some aspects I noticed with your editing behaviour.
- I recommend to re-read WP:SPEEDY and look at Category:Candidates_for_speedy_deletion, to get a better feeling for the kind of article that qualifies for this measure.
- although it is not a written rule AFAIK, the liberal use of maintenance templates is sometimes frowned upon, users doing so sometimes being called "tag-pushers" ("Bausteinschubser"). For example, in this edit, you labeled the article to have too little wikilinks, something you could probably have resolved yourself in the time necessary to look up a fitting template.
- in this case, you introduced maintenance templates in the article while the original creator was still editing it. This can be considered inconsiderate editing, because it will lead to an edit conflict for that user, maybe at the very moment when he was improving the very aspect the tags are directed at.
- in the same example, you failed to elaborate on the talk page why you think that the respective templates are necessary. Exactly where do you see a problem with neutrality and notabilty in this article? How is anyone supposed to know? It's simply not useful to use tags that way. Now you could say that as a newbie, you don't precisely know what Wikipedias rules and guidelines considering neutrality and notability are, but then you shouldn't have been tagging in the first place.
- so to sum it up, you should mabye consider postponing the use of maintenance templates alltogether, until you get a better feeling for the processes they are connected with.

editFancruft? Did I do something wrong? could you help me out, i would really like to keep my article up. User:Sepulwiki 22:35, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
- No, you didn't do anything wrong and the article is not up for deletion. The article does however consist of lots of bulleted information and very little prose. You might look at WP:STYLE for help in formatting your articles. Jamesrnorwood 03:30, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Oh, i see. Ill try to add a little more information to make the article up to standard. thanks for your help!Sepulwiki 00:50, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
- No problem. Keep up the good work!
Vandalism
editWell I recieved my first ever vandalism due to my working to help revert vandalism. It's actually kind of funny. Here is the talk page of the person: 98.190.240.201
- Hey Turd! ;)
- You should be so proud. It took me a loooong time to get my userpage vandalized, and it's only happened twice so far. It means that you're doing some good work. And the vandalism is funny; you should put it on your userpage for posterity sake. --Christine (talk) 20:41, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah I was surprised. I don't even remember the reversion that created the uproar.
- I actually had to get my userpage semi-protected because the vandalism was going on all the time.
