Michael Bloomberg not a Republican still an Independent

Below is an excerpt from the New York City mayoral election, 2009 article explaining current situation in the election and how he "maybe able" run in Republican Party primary and not be a Republican.

"Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the current Mayor, and endorsed Independence Party candidate [1], is also attempting to get permission to run in the Republican primary. To run Bloomberg must receive written permission from three of the five boroughs Republican chairs (New York election laws permit an independent (or a member of another party) to run in a party primary for Mayor of New York City, if that candidate gets permission to run from 3 of the 5 boroughs of the city)[2]. The Bronx Borough Republican chair supports Bloomberg, and he has already been endorsed for re-election this year by the leaders of the Brooklyn and Staten Island Republican Parties but they have not yet given there permission for Bloomberg to run in the primary. Once this happens Bloomberg must submit the paperwork to the board of elections and get approval from the board to be a candidate in the Republican party primary. He is also in the process of trying to obtain the Working Families Party nomination [3]. If Bloomberg acquires all three ballot lines it will tie him with his 2005 campaign, when he appeared on the Republican, Independence, "Students First" (circulated petitions to establish his own minor party) lines."

New York state allows for a candidate to run on the ballot lines of multiple parties through a process known as electoral fusion. Since a candidate can not be a registered in each party (New York state has registration by party) it is clear that the candidate doesn't have to be a member of that party to run in there primary or appear on there ballot line. Just because Bloomberg is attempting to run in the Republican primary doesn't mean he is a Republican again. Should he be listed as a member of the Independence Party because he will for sure appear in November on there ballot line, a line he actively sought. The answer to each is no he is still registered with the state as an Independent voter and in New York it is the registration that defines your political affiliation. Not understanding the difference is easy to understand due to the lack of the same system in all states. For instance I live in Indiana where voters do not register by party. In the states eyes everyone is an independent unless they are a candidate or elected partisan official (most elected offices nationally are non-partisan 90%), and or they are an elected official in the party (most party officials are elected via the public ballot). Political parties may require payment of dues in order to recognize someone as a member, but the state does not recognize that membership. Highground79 (talk) 05:07, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Could you recommend a quality UK/English political/election news source website other then the BBC

No problem the American electoral system can be quite confusing with the federal government, states, and localities for the most part all having different process (sometimes only slightly different, but quite often severely) of running an election. I noticed on your user page that you are from you were from England. I was wondering if you could recommend a quality political/election news source website for the UK/England other then the BBC. I've been trying to understand UK/English politics for a while but so far I just can't find enough info to get a handle on it. Thanks Highground79 (talk) 12:28, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

In the UK they're no equivalent of the electoral college, it's just whichever candidate gets the plurality of the popular vote. Council elections occur on a county, district, and town/parish level. Regarding Google News stories, it is still possible to use them. What you want to do is create a WebCite for the URL (here) and add it to the archiveurl parameter in the citation template. That's the current solution to the problem. And, if I'm not mistaken, the yahoo link you replaced it with will disappear as well. Viriditas (talk) 10:25, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Your 16 November 2008 edit to Ken Livingstone article

I just undid a small part of an edit you made on 16 November 2008 to the article on Ken Livingstone, and I want to explain why. In that edit, you changed autobiography-cum-political tract to autobiography-come-political tract; I have changed the come back to cum. I hope I don't come across as pedantic or condescending, but cum in this kind of construction is the Latin preposition cum, meaning with, not a misspelling of the English word come. I'm not sure that was your reason for making that change, but it's the only one I can think of.
