Wikilinking; correcting spelling
editThank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Adding internal links to other Wikipedia articles can be helpful. There are, however, some things to bear in mind:
- Avoid linking common, generally understood terms.
- Only link terms if there's a high liklihood that a reader would better understand the source article if they read the target article.
- Many terms have multiple meanings, be sure to link the right one.
- Avoid linking words in section headings.
These and other considerations are more fully explained in the linking section of the Manual of Style.
As an example, readers of the English-language Wikipedia are highly likely to know enough about London and New York City to understand them in context. It's very unlikely that reading an entire article about New York City's history, geography, demographics, economy, culture, transportation, and government will enhance their understanding of an artist who lived or worked there. As another example, when linking poached, be sure to specify what type of poaching you mean - illegal hunting, cooking, or something else.
As you work, keep in mind that Wikipedia is written in all national varieties of English (although any given article should stick to a single variety). What may look like a spelling error may actually be the spelling in British, South African, Australian, or Canadian English. "Correcting" such a word to the American spelling is wrong. For example, outside of the US, the upper floors of buildings are spelt "storey". See the spelling section of the Manual of Style for more information. Thank you.
