About my contribution

My father, Sydney Rhys Barker was an opera lover from the age of 8. Opera was his great love and he collected records his entire life.

In the late 1980's someone asked him to put together a cassette tape of highlights from some of his favorite singers. My father spent the next 2 years recording what was to become "The History of the Tenor".

He produced twenty-eight 90 minute tapes for a total of 42 hours of narration with clips from his substantial record collection and had access to several others through friends and opera lovers he had known since he was a boy. These tapes were handed over to me by my mother after my fathers death in 2005 and it seems to me that these treasures should be available to those who shared in this great hobby of his.

It is my hope to try to make all of these sound clips available to anyone who wishes to hear them, it is information he collected over 45 years - of which I have little idea.

I think that this great asset to the opera world is ideal for this great body of knowledge in Wikipedia and I hope to be able to enhance the current listings of operatic tenors and as I progress add those that are yet unlisted in the database.

Please feel free to advise me as I go along, I expect to be at it for about 2 years :)

Web access dates

Link canvassing

Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. In 1989 my father Sydney Barker created a unique survey to cover The History of The Tenor. 10 years ago I converted it from cassette tape to digital and created a website for it. It was over 2,500 minutes of content. It is a fantastic “not for profit” site that categorizes all the great tenors of the 20th century. The information within is a treasure trove of knowledge on the subject and I was delighted to share it with the world.

10 years ago, I added many of the performers to Wikipedia, recently I upgraded the website and the URL’s had changed and some additional artists had been added. So when completely updated I went back to each link to update and add those artists that were missed the first time around.

To my horror I have just noticed that all of my updates have been reverted and I have been issued with a spam ban warning by admin: Ohnoitsjamie I don’t know how to reach out to this admin to try to explain that these updates are authentic and exceptional and unique external content links. The only use of this site is to offer the world the content that it provides on the specific subject. The linked material is as appropriate – if not more than the majority of the other links on the pages so I am confused as to why they are being reverted – most especially any that have outdated links. That makes no sense.

My desire is to keep the links updated and add value to the subject and content of the program. There is no personal gain from this site – it is purely informational. Can you assist or at least forward this message to Ohnoitsjamie?

Per our external links and conflict-of-interest policies, we generally don't permit uses to canvas Wikipedia to personal sites. There are occasional exceptions for academic/educational/non-commercial sites, and if the community feels that the site in question makes sense to include on articles, and which articles. For now, please stop adding the links, and instead participate in the discussion that's been started at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Opera#historyofthetenor_External_links. Click on that link and then click "edit section" to comment. If you can get consensus from the community that the links are appropriate for Wikipedia, I won't object to their inclusion.
