Hi John, thanks for reverting the edits by this user on my user page, however I am curious as to how this sock got round my protection on my user page. Only auto confirmed editors are supposed to edit the page. It doesn't even look like he had 50 edits (although I'm not too sure to be honest). Weird. Thanks for your work! Class455 (talk) 20:16, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

@Class455: it only needs ten edits to be autoconfirmed, and this long-term socker has evidently decided it's worth the trouble. There is a new protection level, Extended confirmed protection, which is now allowed to be used if semi-protection has proved ineffective. Would you like me to apply that to your user page? JohnCD (talk) 14:07, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
JohnCD yes please! Wow, i didn't realise that you only need 10 edits to become autocomfirmed, thought it was 50. Thanks! Class455 (talk) 14:59, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Please help me rename my user name

Hello John,

Could you please help me rename my user name as you have mentioned in your message that it violates Wikipedia policies as it shows the Company name. I am new to Wikipedia and it's confusing as I am not getting any option to rename the user name. Also now, I see that user techtw does not exist.

Please help me fix this.

Thanks Ritesh — Preceding unsigned comment added by Techtw (talkcontribs) 18:29, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

@RiteshRanjan: your account has evidently already been renamed and you are now user RiteshRanjan (talk). That's fine, but remember than in writing about TechTwigs or its people you still have a WP:Conflict of interest, and you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use ("Paid contributions without disclosure" under section 4) to disclose your interest. See the section "Disclosure" of Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. JohnCD (talk) 20:02, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

How to get this article reviewed and publsihed

Dear John,

I appreciate your message and suggestions mentioned. If I would like somebody to review the article I have written and then get it published; how do I do that?

Thanks, Ritesh — Preceding unsigned comment added by RiteshRanjan (talkcontribs) 20:39, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

The way to submit your draft for review is to click the blue button that says "Submit your draft for review!"
I doubt whether the single independent reference is enough for notability. I would advise removing the image of Jha with his sisters - they are not relevant to the article, and they make it look like a family Facebook page rather than an encyclopedia article. JohnCD (talk) 21:23, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks John

Dear John,

Thanks for your quick and valuable suggestions. As advised, I have removed the photo of Mr Jha with his sisters. Also, could you please let me know how I can add more credibility to this article as you have said single independent reference might not be sufficient for review. Could you please help me review this article by reviewing it as you are an experienced user and an active member in the community.

Thanks, Ritesh — Preceding unsigned comment added by RiteshRanjan (talkcontribs) 21:54, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

@RiteshRanjan: no, I do not want to review your age, I have many other things to do, and the reviewers will get to it soon.
You have not yet made any paid editing declaration. See this FAQ, the section "How should I disclose paid contributions in my user page?" This is very important: undisclosed paid editing accounts are blocked.
It is helpful to "sign" your comments on talk pages by ending them with a group of four "tilde" characters ~~~~, which the system will turn into a "signature" of your username and the time and date, like this: JohnCD (talk) 14:28, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Adam Mitchell (footballer, born 1996)

Okay I added Adam Mitchell (footballer, born 1996) to the DAB page of Adam Mitchell (as it appeared on the new page feed) then I just saw on the history that you removed someone with that name saying it was a hoax article-is this the same guy again? Wgolf (talk) 04:00, 25 October 2016 (UTC)

@Wgolf: :it is the same guy, but the article is now OK. What I deleted as a hoax was a one-liner with no references that didn't check out with the team's website. Then in this conversation I was told that he is a real player, but not yet then notable. However he is now playing for a professional first team and passes NFOOTY. List of township-level divisions of Gansu

HI, you deleted this back in 2013 by an author who I think was banned? I don't recall the name but I was wondering if I can build on that instead of building it from scratch. Thanks. Pyrusca (talk) 15:51, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

To add on my previous comment, I was hoping if I can get a copy in sandbox before it goes to article space. Pyrusca (talk) 16:05, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
(edit conflict) It was actually deleted G7 at author's request - he wrote "Intend to start over when ready to build this list", but he never did because he was indeffed for edit-warring and attacks. I have restored it to Draft:List of township-level divisions of Gansu where you can work on it. JohnCD (talk) 16:11, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
Much appreciated. :) Pyrusca (talk) 16:20, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

Ready Player One, Ghost in the Shell and Office Christmas Party disruptive editing

JohnCD, it is good to see you. I want to tell you that I have seen disruptive editing to the pages I mentioned in the subject that I am telling you. Spshu is doing disruptive editing to Office Christmas Party Page. I was wondering if you could block this user due to the issue and add back Reliance Entertainment. It is the same thing on List of DreamWorks Pictures films (DreamWorks Studios/Amblin Partners (2016-present)). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.10.33.10 (talk) 18:50, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

The place to report vandalism is WP:AIV, but I don't see vandalism here - there seems to be disagreement about what production companies to list, and Spshu is quite right to ask for reliable sources - see WP:Verifiability. IMDb by itself is not reliable, because anyone can edit it. This sort of disagreement should be resolved by discussion on the talk pages, not by edit warring back and forth. May I add that you keep deleting relevant and true information? I don't personally know the new earl but I know a family friend and I can get the relevant details to prove his succession. Mossley1 (talk) 09:44, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

@Mossley1:Wikipedia requires reliable, published sources, particularly in a WP:REDFLAG situation like the claim of a re-established earldom which has not appeared in the The London Gazette. If you have such sources, provide them at Talk:Baron Berkeley. JohnCD (talk) 16:14, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 20:33, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

Done - passwords changed and two-factor authorisation set up on WP and linked email account. JohnCD (talk) 14:04, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

Non-Parteeism

I have a complaint regarding the deletion of my article. It was stated that the article was deleted by it was "obviously invented by the creator of the article" but aren't all religions invented by someone? The apes dont climb down from the trees knowing about religion. Someone had to set down the beliefs of every religion created on this planet. What makes mine any different?Nianiad (talk) 22:04, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

@Nianiad: yes, they probably are all invented by someone, but Wikipedia is not a place for people to write about their own inventions. That's not an encyclopedia's job. What we do is summarise what has already been published about a subject in reliable sources. One of our fundamental policies is Wikipedia:No original research, which includes:

"If no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, Wikipedia should not have an article about it. If you discover something new, Wikipedia is not the place to announce such a discovery."

Read Wikipedia is not for things made up one day, which I linked from your talk page; that explains the reasons and the background. JohnCD (talk) 22:20, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
Have you literally nothing better to do than quote wikipedia legislation? Nianiad (talk) 22:30, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
What I am quoting are the policies and guidelines worked out by thousands of people over more than ten years, which make Wikipedia a useful encyclopedia rather than just a random chat site. If you want to become a constructive contributor, they would help you; if you just want to tell the world about your invented "religion" there are plenty of other places you can do that. Try Facebook, or Twitter, or see WP:Alternative outlets for more ideas. JohnCD (talk) 22:44, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
Ah excuse me, how can I preach my glorious new religion in 140 characters? Answer me that John. Nianiad (talk) 23:04, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
That's your problem; but Rabelais, who had the same idea nearly 500 years before you, managed it in only 22: Fais ce que tu voudras. In English it's even shorter: Do what thou wilt - see François Rabelais#Thélème. JohnCD (talk) 23:26, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

IQ Option official website blacklisted by mistake

Hello, John! First of all, I'd like to thank you for the link you posted on my talk page. The thing is I'm trying to add some links to the article on IQ Option (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_Option) and I can't because it's blacklisted. I searched for the domain (iqoption.com) in all blacklists and managed to find only \biqoption\.com here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Spam_blacklist. Could this be the reason all links to the official website are forbidden? What should I do now? Rrusl u (talk) 14:03, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

@Rrusl u:Yes, that's the entry. That is the master blacklist which covers all the Wikimedia projects. You should make your request at m:Talk:Spam blacklist as explained under "Proposed removals" on that page. JohnCD (talk) 14:17, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi JohnCD.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review needs your help

Hi JohnCD,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

Libertarian Macedonian

Okay. I am glad that I did report it at AN if you recognized it as a known pest. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:15, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

The greatest Macedonian was Alexander the Great, and he, being a pupil of Aristotle, would not have been persuaded by philosophical gobbledy-gook. After all, one of Aristotle's objectives was to expose the rhetorical tricks of the Sophists. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:15, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Long rants on Jimbo's talk page are a speciality. If you put the name of his subject into the archive search box there, you will find plenty of them. I wasted an hour re-reading them, but was rewarded by finding in the de-wiki discussions the splendid German adjective babelfischverunfallten for a text garbled by machine translation.
Bearing in mind what he did with the Gordian Knot, I don't think Alexander would have had much patience with the wrangles about the name. JohnCD (talk) 20:21, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
Well, my own assumption is that the whole point to the Gordian Knot is that it was a test of what tool to use, that you won't create an empire by your skill with ropes, because empires were always created with the sword, which is what Alexander used. Exactly. Alexander probably wouldn't have used his own sword on sophists who argued about nomenclature, just found a headsman to do the deed. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:42, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

Viscount of Boschet

Hi, I would have appreciated a friendly chat before you deleted my page. I was adding some info following an inheritance and am a new user on wikipedia. Its put me off any further contributions Im afraid. Drstevejones (talk) 02:19, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

@Drstevejones: I am sorry that Wikipedia does not make it clearer to new users that it is not the sort of social-networking site where people write about themselves. That is strongly discouraged (see Wikipedia is not about YOU and Wikipedia:Autobiography). Also, there is a Wikipedia:Verifiability policy which requires reliable, published sources for what is added - the point of published being that readers should, in principle, be able to check on what they find here.
On other subjects, your contributions will be welcome: the WP:Welcome page and the WP:Introduction are good starting points. JohnCD (talk) 22:15, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

G12

I had thought that an actual unattributed copy-and-paste of an existing article to draft space would qualify for G12. Thank you. I see that an admin agrees. I run into this situation on Articles for Creation occasionally. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:33, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Well, it's a bit of a technical violation, but it's generally not a good idea to have multiple copies floating around, in case they get edited in parallel. I do think it's desirable to explain the reason to the copier, who may well be puzzled by a simple copyvio notice, and I have done that for this one. JohnCD (talk) 20:38, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
Creating multiple copies happens in several ways. Occasionally enthusiastic inexperienced editors create several copies of the same article with different titles because they don't know how redirects work and don't realize that multiple copies will get out of sync. In that case the answer is of course to replace all of the non-primary pages with redirects and to explain to the enthusiastic inexperienced editor. Creating multiple copies of drafts in draft space is relatively common for at least two reasons. The first is good-faith confusion, in which an editor thinks that, when their draft is declined, they have to enter it all over again to resubmit it. This is well-meaning, but it really mucks up the job of reviewing. The second is gaming the system, in which an author knowingly creates multiple copies, either in draft space or in article space , or sometimes in Wikipedia space because they don't know what Wikipedia space is, or in one case today in portal space. However, none of those are actual rip-offs. In this case, it was an actual copy-and-paste from main space into draft space. That's only copyright infringement because of the highly technical way that we have defined copyright, but it is plagiarism, and that is reason enough. What also happens occasionally is an editor writing and submitting a draft that is already in article space. What also happens occasionally is two (or three) different editors independently creating drafts on the same topic. That gets detected when the reviewer tries to move the draft into draft space with the proper title and it hits the existing draft, and then the reviewer has to ask the two authors if they can coordinate with each other. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:59, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

Peerless Network

Hi JohnCD - you deleted the page I created Peerless Network - although it doesn't appear that you left a reason why on the deletion page. I'm assuming that you don't believe that it qualifies as "notable" although at this point, I've no idea how to make it more so, as I've provided ALL the links that I can to document the contribution that this company has made to the telecommunications space - in terms of the services they provide and the patents that they've been awarded. So as my last ditch effort to prove "notability" I'll describe Peerless' contributions here to you - in the hopes that you'll be convinced to "approve" the article as a permanent addition to Wikipedia. Peerless Network provides a service that is an alternative to the traditional ILEC business model in that it allows most telecommunications providers to interconnect amongst each other and therefore significantly reducing costs. This process and their switch design (for which they received a patent) made this new business model possible, and is a major contribution to why the majority of Americans and US businesses now enjoy significantly reduced telecommunications rates. And then Peerless invented a process (for which they they also received a patent) that allows a wireless call to move seamlessly between wifi connections and cellular connections - which again, makes the process of placing a wireless phone call significantly less expensive, as well as improving quality and opening up a host of new consumer and business services. Are there a ton of articles about these technologies? - Nope - it is the underlying mechanism that allows services to be offered (by all major carriers), and is not the "marketed" service themselves - and thus, not anything that anyone really wants to write about. BUT without these technologies, the telecommunications industry would not have progressed to its current state. I'll ask you to reconsider your deletion - on the grounds that Peerless Network has made significant contributions to the US telecommunications industry - and thus is notable for its contributions and achievements - documented via the receipt of many patents. Thank you Jlk0221 (talk) 14:53, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

@Jlk0221: the page is not deleted - as a result of the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Peerless Network, Inc. it was moved to the Draft space at Draft:Peerless Network where you can work on it. The admin who closed the discussion and moved it left a note on your talk page to tell you where it is. All that I deleted was an orphaned redirect left behind at Peerless Network, Inc. when you moved the page to a title without "Inc". I will give some advice on your talk page in a day or so. Omixon

Hello,

I've tried to edit the Wiki page of our company, but the whole page was deleted. The name was "Omixon". Can we restore the original page we had before my edits? Something was against your policy, but I'm not sure which part of my edits was wrong and caused the deletion.

I guess you are user Norinagy (talk · contribs). (It helps communication if you sign in before editing). The important point, which we do not explain clearly enough to new users, is that Wikipedia is not a place for companies to tell the world about themselves. Thank for your help. It was absolutely my fault what happened I'll review your suggestions and edit the page accordingly. When you suggest "add to the article references that show significant coverage of the company from sources independent of it, particularly those that verify what the article says " you mean atricles, scientific discussions? Where and how can I add these references? Thank you in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Norinagy (talkcontribs) 12:16, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

@Norinagy: sorry for delay in replying. What sort of references: anything that discusses the company in some depth, probably articles in newspapers or trade press, not press releases, see WP:Identifying reliable sources. Basically, for any statement in the article, there should ideally be a reference to answer the question "How do you know? Who says?" For how to add references, see WP:Referencing for beginners. Deletion of page Haim Dotan Haim Dotan (talk) 14:41, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Dear JohnCD,

About the page you deleted called Haim Dotan. A Hebrew Wikipedia article about Haim Dotan was written by the journalist Michael Yacovson 5 years ago. Haim Dotan is now known and cited in news organizations worldwide as the designer of the world's longest and highest glass pedestrian bridge in ZhangjiaJie, China. I, an employee of Haim Dotan Architects, thought it fitting that an article should be written in the English Wikipedia in addition to the Hebrew one.

Is this enough explaination to allow this article? If not, what are the rules around who can post an article?

Best regards,

deleted page Carr-Chellman

HI I understand that my students created a page on my work prior to my departure from Penn State. I'm now the Dean at the University of Idaho College of Education. I'm thinking it may make sense to reconsider this deletion based on new information (my new position, I have around 250 publications, and a high level on google scholar, and a TED talk, global, that has around 900K views, serving as Editor in Chief of the e-Learn magazine published by the Association of Communication Machinery. Am I allowed to create the article myself? It's likely that my own work on this will be more balanced than my students' work was as I'm able to be quite self-critical. ˜˜˜˜ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.145.154.17 (talk) 04:02, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

I deleted the article after a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alison A. Carr-Chellman. That was nearly three years ago, so things may well have changed.
Writing about oneself is strongly discouraged, but not forbidden. Read WP:Autobiography, noting in particular that any article will not "belong" to you - others can and probably will edit it. Then, if you want to go ahead, read:
It is advisable to register an account, which will make communication easier. Don't post an article directly, but use WP:Articles for creation to make a draft, which you can send for review by an experienced user, who will either accept it or give you feedback. If accepted, I will need to decide whether it meets the objections from the deletion discussion, or needs further review.
It will probably be more difficult than you expect. Understand that an encyclopedia article is not the same as a CV; it is not the story you want to tell the world but what an uninvolved author, surveying the published sources, would consider a general encyclopedia reader would be interested to read. If you copy from existing sites a formal copyright release from the actual copyright owner would be required, but better to write in your own words. There is good advice from a user very experienced with academic biographies at User talk:DGG/Archive 0.5#Academic articles, what I think is important - just that section, not the whole archive. In para 2, for BFAQ read WP:PSCOI, in para 3 for WP:PROFTEST read WP:PROF. JohnCD (talk) 22:17, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

I am recreating the article you had deleted.

Hi. You had deleted the page named "Shoaib Tantray". The reason behind the deletion was "a real person who has not public importance". The article had poor and lesser number of reference links that could explain the article fully. It's therefore requested to you that now I'm recreating this article with more content and reference links. Hope you will leave your worthy message on the talk page of that article. I'm waiting for your reply. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamkash1234 (talkcontribs) 13:06, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Iranian vandal?

Hey John! See Eilya Monfared (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), and the fact that it was later given a disambuated page title. This seems very much like our good old JR-vandal friend from Iran (who hasn't quacked so much recently here, just once or twice on Wikidata). Other editing from the account is incredibly similar; Iranian singers and the like (not to mention markup, links or even origin). Definitely not notable, if the "musician" exists at all indeed. Do you think it's worth making a case at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/جواد رمضانی شوراب again? Sorry to bother you and take up your time, the account and all the rest just seems a bit fishy to me. Jared Preston (talk) 16:27, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

I don't really see it, apart from a shared interest in Iranian singers - this user has been around for a year and seems to be editing constructively, and his subjects seem to be real, though I'm not sure about their notability. I doubt whether JR could have refrained for so long from introducing his own name. JohnCD (talk) 16:54, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
