Please read WP:Copyright violations as your recent article Bottlebrush (cave formation) was essentially a copy of the source you cited. Quite simply: don't do that. Vsmith (talk) 00:56, 23 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Great photos! Consider uploading directly to Wikimedia Commons...

edit

Welcome to Wikipedia, thanks for uploading the high quality photographs!

Please consider uploading any additional photographs directly to the Wikimedia Commons. Because of the wonder that is unified login, you actually already have an account there: commons:User:John Mortimore. The great thing about uploading to the Commons is that when files are placed there they are immediately available to all Wikimedia projects. One simply references the filename, as usual, and if it doesn't exist on the local wiki the software automatically accesses the file by the same name if it exists in the Commons.

If you would like to find out how to move the photos you've already uploaded here (EN Wikipedia) to the Commons, please take a look at Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons. That link contains detailed instruction if you want to move them yourself, but you can also add the template {{mtc}} to your recently uploaded images and other users will take care of it.

Please feel free to contact me on my talk page if you have any questions! --Dfred (talk) 15:42, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm Looking For Some Help

edit

Hello, I have been actively editing Wikipedia for several days now, and I have started several new pages. I have been doing some research, but I am having a hard time finding information that is useful. The three pages I would most like to have some help with are

If you can help me get any of these pages out of the stub category, I would greatly appreciate it. John Mortimore (talk) 03:19, 28 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well, if you don't find stuff online, then you might need a library. List of minerals (complete), mindat.org, rruff.info/ima/ and mineralienatlas.de are "references" for minerals. WP Geology might help too (",) --Chris.urs-o (talk) 14:37, 28 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Image without license

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Sign commemorating the Ontonagon Boulder (photo by Ian Shackleford).jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by MifterBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 03:14, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:Location of Ontonagon Boulder.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Location of Ontonagon Boulder.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 02:05, 15 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

File permission problem with File:Zincolivenite.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Zincolivenite.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:52, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Article Feedback Tool update

edit

Hey John Mortimore. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 21:25, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

The article List of rocks and minerals found in the Keweenaw Peninsula has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of notability. No reasoning for why this geographic subregion need a separate article when no other state or country has one, that I can find. Dana boomer (talk) 18:43, 10 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Brachiopods photo

edit

Hello. Regarding your Brachiopods photo: as the banner says, it would be preferable to replace or supplement the quarter as a reference object with a metric scale bar (e.g. beneath the lower left specimen) to make the size more universally apparent, and thus more readily interpreted by viewers from other countries. --Animalparty-- (talk) 01:29, 29 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
