Missing letters?

In your note to me, you said:

"very quick update of the pipeline references!
also regarding missing letters this historical webpage of importance is missing a capital letter A (Newspaper section)

i looked for it at the bottom of the page but it must have bounced when it reached the end of the ligne--John Zdralek 07:11, 28 May 2007 (UTC)"Reply

I wasn't sure what you meant. I looked for a connection to the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline page, but it doesn't seem to fit. Another article perhaps? Sunray 14:14, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Calgary Wikipedia Meetup

edit

With the municipal election coming up, I figured it would be good to have another local meet of Wikipedia contributors in Calgary. This would be a chance to chat about Wikipedia stuff in general, but also to discuss ways to cover the election on Wikipedia. I’m suggesting next week, at a location (TBD) in the downtown area. If you’re interested in participating, please vote on when you’d like to schedule the meet. Thanks. —GrantNeufeld 22:00, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:2007 September 11, Google Earth screen capture, Harad, Saudi Arabia.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:2007 September 11, Google Earth screen capture, Harad, Saudi Arabia.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 07:41, 13 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of Image:2007 September 11, Google Earth screen capture, Harad, Saudi Arabia.png

edit

A tag has been placed on Image:2007 September 11, Google Earth screen capture, Harad, Saudi Arabia.png, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per CSD g12.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. Clubjuggle 08:58, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:Google Earth display image, Haradh, Saudi Arabia.png

edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Google Earth display image, Haradh, Saudi Arabia.png. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. VegitaU 16:37, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Example of a Wikipedia user as a search engine result.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Example of a Wikipedia user as a search engine result.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. VegitaU 16:43, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

image 1 - Google Earth software is free, other images of Google Earth (Wikipedia article for Google Earth) appear to be waiting to have their licences changed to reflect that they are images of free software, image 2 Kartoo software is also free, and the image used is a static image of search engine software, not a search engine version

Decline reason:

Just because the software is available at no cost does not mean that the screenshots are licensed under an appropriate free license for use on the Wikipedia. — Yamla 18:57, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

if there is no appropriate free licence then the screenshots should be deleted or archived in a limited way until the image is historical, notable, other. i can do that (deleting) myself until something constructive is done to improve licencing those images for use in an improved encyclopedia. which i doubt i can myself without emails and a lot more effort than is practical. of six satellite images that i searched and made screen captures, including Earthbrowser, Google Earth was the best image accessable by anyone, without begin able to directly access the free NASA images, which i cannot with OSX, as far as I know. millions of people have and will access the same information, a representation of that view really should be added and kept in the history of the article(s), or at least a screenshot that best represents the software. if that is practical at the moment.--John Zdralek 19:30, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Decline reason:

The images won't be historical for many years (70 years after publication), that is not a solution. The images can be deleted whether you are blocked or not. Other people can access the NASA images easier, just because you can't is not an excuse to use copyrighted images. Wikipedia is the free encyclopedia - copyrighted images are not free. We use them where it makes sense (logos of companies, album covers) - situations where illustration adds significantly to the article and there is no free alternative - where it fits into Wikipedia's fair use policy For aerial images, there usually is a free alternative. Besides the fact that you have not provided a reason for unblocking, you still seem to think that our copyright policy is either silly or optional, when in fact it is quite important.— Mr.Z-man 02:45, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

reason for unblocking this time is to improve image copyright for a non-free satellite image (and other licence statements). First, substituting a WikiMapia image for the Google Earth image. I have read the Google Maps Terms and Conditions and other ways of accepting and improving copyright statements. i will begin writing a detailed "non-free use rationale" if i can find a template otherwise first version will include Google Earth copyright statement summaries 1. not for use with a vehicle 2. not used as a photographic image, for example, not a high resolution photo or graphic arts image 3. most likely, free encyclopedic article is appropriate conduct for use of the image. I will use licencing templates "Free screenshot template GPL 2." plus "Non-free use rationale", and a format similar to NASA satellite image. Note, i have been putting a years worth of effort into Wikipedia including licencing images, at the moment i am starting over on some images, copyright is important and requires a silly amount of time, or no time at all, if i had access to OSX NASA images. I'm getting more out of working dumber (not smarter) in some ways but not much except improving my Wikipedia and article use through repetitive strain. thank you for the response and edit.

Decline reason:

I'm not totally clear that you understand what was wrong with your previous edits; how about this — explain to me, exactly, how you would add licenses and rationales for Image:Google Earth display image, Haradh, Saudi Arabia.png if you uploaded it again — Haemo 22:13, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of Template:Canadian coal mines begin

A tag has been placed on Template:Canadian coal mines begin requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).
