WikiProject Software Announcement
edit- Software Wikia is a wiki specialised on software using semantic extras. If a nice article does not have the required Wikipedia:Notability, simply export it and ask an admin for an import there.
- WikiProject Free Software is now merged with WikiProject Software. The link to WikiProject Free Software is Wikipedia:WikiProject Software/Free Software.
- To better serve Wikipedia, WikiProject Malware is now under the parent of WikiProject Computer Security. All Malware articles are currently being transferred over to the new project. In any case, you are welcome to join at WikiProject Computer Security!
- All members of WikiProject Software are urged to install the Centralized Announcement System on their talk page.
- I have changed the participant (members) table by replacing the Task column with Area of Expertise. I also introduced a new template based status system so as to "arrange" the members according to whether they are active, semi-active, inactive, or retired. Please update your entry accordingly.
- New IRC server! The old channel on Freenode is not used anymore. See See here. Manual for using IRC can be found here for why. Find us at:

Here are some tasks awaiting attention:

WikiProject Software to do list
edit- The following topics are missing an article; calling all enthusiasts to start these articles urgently. [Read the Talk page]
- Gordian Knot (software), AutoGK, a bit obsolete, but still worth an article, or two (see also Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/BeSweet)
- Topaz Labs (software), photo editing software in the same vein as Photoshop or NIK software. The company has expanded and is used by many various fine art and photography professionals. www.topazlabs.com. Deserves an article.
- (please feel free to add more)
- The following articles need some updating and cleanup (please feel free to add more):
- BlueSpice for MediaWiki
- Cabri Geometry, article too short but of significant importance
- Defraggler
- EmEditor, needs notability references, and general improvements
- Ext4
- Flowtracer
- Google File System, tagged with {{Expert-subject|Software|date=November 2008}}
- Home Assistant (seems to be consensus that this needs cleanup from uninvolved editors after its 2nd AfD, as of 2021-04-02)
- Hypervisor, the PCs and desktop systems section needs attention
- Jv16 powertools [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
- KVIrc
- Light (web browser), just created, it's decently written but still really short, and it's not part of this project yet
- mdadm, mostly non-encyclopedic content (HOWTO/manual)
- Micro Transport Protocol, widely used since uTorrent 2.0 released
- Ntfsprogs
- Norton 360
- Recuva
- Presentation Manager, requesting screenshot of GUI, also needs references
- Program Information File
- Software as a service
- Windows library files
- XNUMBERS
- Zamzar
- Zero Install, a bit confusing article, needs to be explained more clearly
- Autodesk Media and Entertainment, major content deletion happened for cleanup on 17 March 2008 (11,000K to 2,000K), and now it's so outdated & stub-like it needs a total rebuild
- List of web application frameworks, go through the articles of listed frameworks and nominate for deletion the non-notable ones, clean the list from non-notable ones, clean Template:Application frameworks
- Aviary (application suite) Needs major updating, referencing, and clean up.
- Scrumban article reads like a sales brochure and I don't have the subject knowledge to fix it.
- The following page lists articles that need expert attention from WikiProject Software and have been tagged by {{Expert-subject|Software}}:

AfD nomination of Truth & Consequences
editAn editor has nominated Truth & Consequences, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Truth & Consequences and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 13:59, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Question from Brenden Long
editWhy are my contributions to the Start Menu page considered spam?
-Brenden Long (User:Brendenlong) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brendenlong (talk • contribs) 23:47, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
How about just adding a note that there are alternatives, without the list. That way people know that there are alternatives to the Start Menu for Windows. I'm personally a big fan of alternative shells and shell enhancements for Windows. :)
-Brenden —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brendenlong (talk • contribs) 00:05, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Or would it possibly be a good idea for an entirely new article, considering the number of alternatives available?
-Brenden —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brendenlong (talk • contribs) 00:08, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi there!
editFirst I must say that I'm NOT Native English Speaker, so please be sorry.
Thank you for your feedback, I think that the "Windows 7" logo was correct and it isn't fake at all, It just unclaimed by Microsoft, you can search "Windows 7" images in images.google.com or visit www.windows7.cc
I apologized for uploading Windows 7 image, which was in development.Hippy deluxe (talk) 13:40, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Windows NT Architecture - releases table
editHi! Re. the last part of our previous exchange, please take a look at Talk:Windows_NT/Sandbox/Windows_NT_processor_architecture_table . Any comments/edits/suggestions/brickbats? Jeh (talk) 11:23, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Windows2000.png
editThanks for uploading Image:Windows2000.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 03:05, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Rollback
editI looked through your contributions and I believe that when you have reverted edits, you have done so appropriately. So, I have added rollback rights to your account. Please note that rollback should be used only for blatant vandalism and does not leave a useful edit summary. I hope you find it useful, but if not, just ask and I will remove it. —Remember the dot (talk) 02:12, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Windows NT Discontinued Software
editI feel that the Category:Discontinued Microsoft software is a better category for this software title. It is more sutable that the other one. please give it a chance. Windows NT 4.0 is not a very popular system. It makes more sense to use the Category:Discontinued Microsoft software Windows XP 64 bit edition is also in this category. Lets try it and see what happens!
Thanks
editHello... thanks for catching the glitch at Hiro Nakamura. I'm not sure what was going on, but I had problems with several edits at around that time. Slow edits, edits not happening, and once even reaching a "Wikimedia database error" screen. I thought I'd cleaned up all of the problems, but I must have missed one. Thanks again. --Ckatzchatspy 00:39, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Dont Worry
editIm sorry that you thought it was vandalism I just couldnt figure out how the IE's were page attached to them and that IE8 is now out i'd thought i would change it to keep it up to date, Sorry, im not that gd with wikipedia! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamieostrich (talk • contribs) 19:15, 10 March 2008 (UTC) Also thanks for updating it, can you please tell me how you changed the links, thanks
IE7 was released alongside Vista
editThe XP version of IE7 may have been released earlier, but "corresponding releases" means whenever an IE version has been released, around the same time, a major update to Windows has also been released. That will not be the case for IE8, if you use common sense. I guess "to each his own" and you love reverting edits/starting edit wars. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 221.128.180.139 (talk) 09:12, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
IE8 development start
editIt's still a conclusion you reached yourself. You can't just add loosely implied information to Wikipedia. Try finding a third party source that backs up this claim. Finding a third party source would also help prove that the August 2007 date is notable, when it is doubtful that development actually didn't start until then. (The Acid2 rendering at the start of the video is already quite different from IE7 and it wouldn't make sense from them to sit around doing very little between finishing IE7 and then.)
On the other hand, is it impossible that the August screenshot was from some other project that was later merged into IE8? - Josh (talk | contribs) 16:02, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- The screenshots show work beyond IE7 that eventually made it into IE8. Whether development occurred before then I don't know, but we know from these screenshots that work on improving the rendering engine was going on in August 2007. This is the best date we have to go on for how long Microsoft has been working on this. Whether Microsoft was developing IE8 at the time or developing another project that eventually merged with IE8 doesn't make much difference; the work all went into IE8 in the end. —Remember the dot (talk) 22:01, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
You are a dog of Microsoft
edit...And a sock puppet. I base this on the clear and present truth that you only edit Microsoft related articles, making you in all actuality a PR member.
Orphaned non-free media (Image:Winmine.png)
editThanks for uploading Image:Winmine.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:11, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Windows Vista
editHi Josh, thanks for reverting my edit to Windows Vista. I had been trying to remove a couple of spam links from a spammer I had been following. Sorry I messed up the article - I don't know how I ended up removing those particular bits of text, I think I may have accidentally edited an earlier version. Anyway, thanks for spotting that and reverting. Best, Gwernol 17:24, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
WikiProject:Software
editSee the reference section for citation of the release dates. For example see [10]. Note the bit "Separately, developers attending WWDC 2008 were provided with a physical Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard installation disc, pictured below, containing the first build of the next-generation operating system to leave Apple's corporate boundaries." PaleAqua (talk) 16:53, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- Odd looks like the date got removed, I was sure I remember it being more specific in that section when I first read it. Only the Safari stuff has a date. Guess that leaves the date as undefined between the monday 9th and the 10th. 10th since that was the date of the article and the 9th since that was the start of WWDC. Unfortunately when doing more digging I found some sources that say it (not sure if the same build) was released so some developers as early as June 5th. Sounds like removing the date was the right thing to do. PaleAqua (talk) 18:04, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
RTM vs Ship Date
editThe way I understand this is that the release to manufacturing is the date on which Microsoft ships the final code to the people who print the disks, Which makes it Microsoft's ship date, something completely different than the GA date. Though I will admit that I am possibly misinterpreting the article, its not like Microsoft has been exactly clear on the subject. (You also have to consider that not a single Microsoft OS has ever been delivered on time, at least not to the month.)I think its best overall to leave the 2010 date as it is certainly more likely than even December 2009. Also the 2010 date was alone in the side box on the Win 7 page, I added the 2009 date there so its not like I completely disagree with you, not to mention that I was the one who added Steve Ballmers announcement of the 2009 date in the first place. -- Anthony S. Is it really more important?
editThe short answer is yes. If you are specifically speaking to someone else's comments, you can says so. Preserving chrono order allows new arrivals to the conversation (or participants) to understand what went into the entirety of your reply. You likely replied because the person who subsequently posted didn;t address what you felt needed a reply. It's a more genuine approach, wouldn't you agree? - Arcayne (cast a spell) 18:22, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- It isn't a matter of tolerance, Josh. It's part of our guidelines for discussion pages. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 23:33, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

editMy bad. Please.
editPlease leave the iMagic OS page alone and I will leave you alone. It is cited, as well as can be, from the website. There is no other form of citations possible. It is not a stub, the headings will expand with time, thats how a wiki works. Just give it some time to be developed by the community. For example, take a look at a page I started, Harold La Borde, look at the history. It started out very insignificant, a stub, as you would have it. But now it has info I didn't even know, and he's my Father's uncle. You see? Please, lets stop fighting and work as a community. Thank You. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.206.224.176 (talk) 20:14, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Huh?
editI did not write much about the software, I just gave links to them. You can minimize that text, but the way you did it made it look like nothing. I merely stated the things that set it apart. The website is the only citation. It is relatively new. I understand, now, about adding that stub marking, thanks, I will do that. And if someone is chopping a page into a quarter, and then marking it a stub, that is not quite community like either, eh? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.206.224.176 (talk) 13:35, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Josh,
- I've noticed a prominent absence of you on the Windows 7 page. Without you the page has gone haywire. I am in an edit war with User: Warren. He has gone to the level of using inappropriate language now.
I've referred him to User: Adambiswanger1, who is an administrator. I also need your help because a screenshot of build 7004 has shown up and there is a debate about whether it should be put on the page.Jasper Deng (talk) 02:08, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Josh,
- Warren has replied to our threats of posting him on Wikipedia: Wikiquette alerts with more profanity, and I've stuck another big fat warning sign on his talk page. He has denounced YOU as someone who
does nothing for the encyclopedia. He really needs to posted now, because he has also denounced our threat as fake. We need to get him into administrative consequences and referring him on the Wikiquette alerts page is a start. He has, however, cut down on inappropriate words.Jasper Deng (talk) 18:57, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- I don't see any profanity in his reply. When did he denounce me like that? He didn't say it was fake; he implied that it wouldn't pan out. - Josh (talk | contribs) 20:10, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- He says that I do nothing but argue which I feel is profanity. He said that you did that also, which was what I meant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasper Deng (talk • contribs) 22:41, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, you don't. Your contribution history to Wikipedia is a matter of public record, and it is devoid of actual contributions to the text of the encyclopedia. Argue all you want, you KNOW you aren't doing much here other than trying to criticise the work of others, while doing no actual work yourself. Warren -talk- 14:18, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- Josh, Warren used even more profanity on his alert, and again denounced me as someone who only argues and criticizes. This is enough to move him to the Administrator's Noticeboard. I have posted-for the third time-another fat warning sign on Warren's talk page. I may have used profanity but now do not. Anyways, where is Ahunt?Jasper Deng (talk) 18:47, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

The editor who has been going at it with me for the past two weeks has stoop to a new low by making me look like the real bad guy, when clearly I have done absolutely nothing wrong. And let my record log be proof to that. I only have one editor who is in discontent with me, and that is the one filing this false complaint right here for all his wrongdoings to begin with, while this editor has many other editors besides me who are in discontent with him. But if he wants to call me out, be my guest. But let the respective record logs reflect all the wrong doings made by the editor. Eh? (For the builds) 78.15.101.52 (talk) 16:43, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
- Builds 7004 through 7016 are pre-RC builds, and builds 6995 and 6967 are pre-Beta builds. Those builds were leaked, not released, and some users like to remove leaked information from articles. I don't know much about these builds. - Josh (talk | contribs) 17:30, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Taskbar grouping vs combining
editIt's all because in Windows 7 MS has mixed up "grouping" and "combining". By setting "Never combine", apps aren't combined vertically but still *same app windows* are grouped together horizontally on the taskbar, unlike in XP where if you turn off grouping, it doesn't combine them vertically and doesn't group them on the taskbar, so that the newest started window appears at the extreme right. - xpclient Talk 04:50, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Infoboxes on Internet Explorer 8
editHi. I believe {{Infobox Windows component}} is the right template to use on this article. It's most appropriate to think of this template as a focused subset of {{Infobox software}}, rather than a companion to it. Internet Explorer is most assuredly a component of Windows, and not a piece of stand-alone software. Yes, it's available for older versions of Windows, but it bills itself as an "update", and completely replaces the older versions of IE shipped with those systems. A number of other Windows components are updated in this fashion outside the standard release cycle; MMC, Windows Installer, Movie Maker, DirectX, etc.etc.
To help make this more clear, I've added an "also_available_for" parameter to the Windows component template, and I've (re-)added the "caption" parameter that disappeared sometime last year. These two things should help make the template a more useful replacement for the software infobox. Warren -talk- 20:58, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, what about Internet Explorer? - Josh (talk | contribs) 21:21, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hmmmm. That article is supposed to reasonably accurately cover the entirety of the product's history. The first three versions of IE weren't a "component" of Windows... it was more like an add-on. I think the 'software' template should be applied to Internet Explorer, as well as the articles for the first three versions. Whether it gets applied to IE4 or IE5 is more debatable: those versions can be installed on the original release of Windows 95 which never did have IE pre-installed... Microsoft did go through all that anti-trust stuff regarding bundling which related especially to IE4. IE6, 7 and 8 definitely should have the 'Windows component' template.
- I'm noticing several... shall we call them "factual stretches" in the lead sections of some of the IE articles. There's definitely a lot of clean-up and consistency work to be done here still. Warren -talk- 22:26, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

That's a bug, not a removed feature
editAbout this, yes it's a bug that has resulted in removal of quick launch functionality. The point is it's discontinued and deprecated. It could be put this way: The ability for Quick Launch to be used post restart has been removed which is exactly what the bug does. This should be put back IMHO. - xpclient Talk 10:59, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

I remember that you were the very first editor to collaborate with me when I first joined Wikipedia. Anyways, please do not create this redirect without consensus at the deletion discussion of this page.Jasper Deng (talk) 05:16, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- I remember. I see you've become a great contributor. Now, the fact that a deletion discussion is in progress does not inhibit me from making changes to the article. For example, if the article contains lies, I can still remove them. Since there is a potential legitimate use for the article, it's only reasonable that I use it for that instead of blanking the article.
If the redirect is not an option, then I recommend tagging the article for speedy deletion for reason G3 (obvious hoaxes), rather than waiting for the same decision to inevitably be reached. - Josh (talk | contribs) 05:59, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Metro Snap.png
editThank you for uploading File:Metro Snap.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. —JmaJeremy✆✎ 04:33, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
Windows Server 2012
editWhat's the point on keeping the "talk" paragraph on Windows 8 Server and Windows Server 8 Beta when Windows Server 2012 has been released 3 months ago?
And please mind your English, it's not "minus vandalism", you should be referring to "minor vandalism", and also you better check the dictionary before using the word vandalism again, as it depicts on property but not text or intellectual. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kmchanw (talk • contribs) 22:42, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
- We like to keep records of old discussions.
- No, Josh is correct. First, vandalism does have a specific meaning on Wikipedia, and when he said "minus vandalism", he meant that that discussion contained some vandalism, so he restored the discussion without that vandalism.--Jasper Deng (talk) 22:45, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
Oh you are talking about Wikipedia Vandalism instead of vandalism, but it is English, it needs to stick to english. One can't create a meaning out of the English word. Keep records? Just keeping some outdated stuff. Anyway, a way.
Just a thought, I don't think Vandalism is a good word, Wikipedia can use Vandalization. The meaning is different.
2nd thought, should we or I delete this paragraph after finishing talking?
- On Wikipedia, whenever you see "vandalism" in discussion (which is more convenient to talk about than "vandalization"), it means our policy's definition. This and all old discussions should be kept one way or another (old ones are archived as necessary).--Jasper Deng (talk) 23:16, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Re: Windows 8 on ARM
editWindows 8 is considered to effectively be a separate, yet similar product from Windows RT. Indicating that Windows 8 as a whole can run on ARM misrepresents the differences between the platform, because full Windows 8 cannot run on ARM. Only Windows RT can, and it, officially, does not support all of the features and software compatible with 8. This is the exact kind of confusion that Microsoft themselves have been faced with, ironically.
Sorry about that. ViperSnake151 Talk 17:49, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Classic menu and pinning
editHello. I noticed that you reverted changes about the pinned program area in the features removed Vista/7 articles. You're right: classic start menu did not have pinning. But dragging a folder didn't actually add it, it created a special shell symbolic link to the folder. It was still a shortcut/link. The actual folder wasn't copied or moved. You can see when you delete the folder item dragged to the Start menu folder that it is a shortcut/link. Since pinning is the same thing as 1-click auto-creation of a shortcut, I think your reverts are incorrect. Besides, the whole point of moving it to the Windows 7 article was that Vista had the Classic menu available. Just my two cents. - 120.63.72.140 (talk) 07:50, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
